rexrode uninjured, wearing a vest saying d.c. on his back, an aabbreviation for the department of corrections. he was overseeing a group of five inmates during a work detail at mosaic park in bartow. the suspect, 42-year-old david ross, overpowered the corrections officer who was armed only with pepper spray. ross they say locked the other four inmates in a small building at the park, took off with the truck and rexrode heading for st. petersburg where officials say friends and family. how are you doing? the officer didn't comment, but he was checked for injuries and is said to be all right. as the search unfolded an many as five schools were put on modified lockdown in the bartow area. it was a pinellas county deputy who spotted the truck in st. petersburg. ross ditching the pickup in front of this house took off running and was arrested a few blocks away. >> they caught the guy. he was on the ground. three cops had their guns on

he would intentionally pick his head up like this and kick his feet. they are like don't move, don't move. >> reporter: deputies found the other four inmates at that park just sitting there waiting. they are being cooperative we are told. some of them with very little time left on their sentences. as for the suspect in this case, we are told that in the past he does have on his record other cases, or at least one, of battery on a law enforcement officer. now very likely another. he was scheduled to be released february. it seems like we are telling you about this way too often. troopers searching for hit-and- run drivers. even with newer and stricter laws, the number of hit-and- runs are on the rise. i want you to take a look at this. 2014 there were 67,000 hit-and- runs.
