people who aren't locking up their weapons. >> a huge number. >> reporter: a huge reaction when he realizes how many guns have been stolen from cars in the bay area so far this year. >> to have a gun, take care of it. pay attention to where you keep it. >> reporter: here is a closer look. since january 2015, 220 guns stolen from cars in hillsborough county. 174 in pinellas county. st. pete 278. burglaries where guns were taken and 19 were out of cars left open. >> reporter: the sergeant says just this week three guns have been stolen out of unlocked cars in the city. only one has been recovered so far. >> during vehicle burglaries where guns are taken, 76% are from unlocked vehicles. >> reporter: but 10news has learned that if a gun is stolen from an unlocked car nothing happens to owners.

with the gun, the original owner won't face charges. >> it's dangerous for everybody out there. safety, if you have a gun that you're concerned about safety, we are asking, you know, go the extra step and lock your vehicle. especially if you keep a gun in it. >> reporter: police hope these shocking numbers shock gun owners into keeping their guns locked up. jennifer titus, 10news wtsp. >> now, to help any way they can police have even put up message boards around the bay area to keep your cars hands. right now the search is on for a missing boater. now, tampa police dive teams are looking at the north end of the boat ramp at the courtney campbell causeway a man got stuck on a sandbar. he jumped off of the boat to push it off the sandbar. he then went under the water, resurfaced twice. his fianci called 911. so far drivers have not had any luck finding him.

department? >> reporter: dion, deputy stephen smith tells me that he denies that he stole prescription pain pills from the sheriff's office here and pawned his department-issued gun to feed a drug addiction. instead, he says that the sheriff is taking the word of a scorned ex-girlfriend, ruining his reputation and his career here at the sheriff's office because the deputy just disagreed with policy. former deputy stephen smith says the department mandates the number of people they randomly stop and gather information on. smith believes it's a civil rights violation and says when he refused to meet it he got moved to desk duty. the sheriff says that's where smith stole oxycodone pills to feed his addiction. they forced him to confess to an addiction he doesn't have and are taking the word of a scorned ex. when asked about pawning his service gun, the attorney said that smith did not break the
