the gulf of mexico and the people who let it happen, all caught on video! animals trapped inside a burning warehouse. this morning the investigation into what started the fire. and scary moments for the republican vice candidate as his plane goes skidding off the runway. good morning and welcome to "10 news early morning." i'm allison kropff. lets get a look at #10weather with meteorologist kate wentzel.

the infamous oil spill cam from the 2010 b-p disaster. oil spewing into the gulf for nea three months! but now we've learned of a different oil spill from two years ago. so why are we bringing this to you now? investigative reporter david hammer got exclusive video and talked to a whistleblower who knew he needed to expose his supervisors for dumping oil into the gulf and trying to cover it up. evan howington had a dream job. it was like a high-stakes video game.

controlled remotely operated vehicles. robot submarines oil rigs use to do important and sometimes dangerous work, deep in the gulf of mexico. but on his very first day on the uncle john oil rig, howington felt something wasn't right. before the uncle john even left pensacola harbor, howington noticed hydraulic oil dripping off the docked submarine and into the water below. he took pictures. he laid down absorbent cloths. he told his supervisor. who apparently didn't care. and that was just a prelude to an even bigger shock when the uncle john got

walter oil and gas, 60 miles off port fourchon. here's how walter's oil well was supposed to work. oil flowing out of the ground 15- hundred feet below the surface of the gulf of mexico. it goes through a stack of valves and pipes called the christmas tree stack. then it connects to the pipeline through a connector called a jumper line. that wasn't flowing like it should at this well, though, so they added chemicals to try to ease the flow. that didn't work so they eventually had to send out the uncle john rig from pensacola. when they closed off either end of the jumper line to remove it, they had to send down an rov to remove the material inside in a bag called a bladder. but every time they did it, it just filled right back up again. so they gave up and just did this. howington's bosses from the contractor he worked for. canyon offshore.

restoration network, one of the leading environmental watchdogs for gulf drilling. he's never met howington, but admires the risk he took to expose walter. but what about the people howington caught in the act? were they held accountable? a spokesman for walter oil and gas said the rig boss in the video, david thibodaux, was an independent contractor and wouldn't say if he has continued to work for walter. and the contractors who employed the others in the video... canyon offshore and cal-dive... did not respond to our questions. a year and a half after "howington" reported the incident to federal authorities-- "walter oil and gas"-- was convicted of a felony and

in a statement: walter said -- quote -- "while no walter employees were directly involved in this incident-- walter has taken responsibility for it-- and implemented corrective actions to prevent similar incidents in the future." but whether it was truly held accountable is up for debate. an airplane carrying republican vice presidential candidate mike pence slid off the runway at new york's laguardia airport last night. the plane made a rough impact when it landed. we're told the pilot slammed on the brakes and people on board could smell splashed on the front windows of the cockpit. no one was hurt. at least 16 people were arrested thursday in the north dakota oil pipeline protest. law enforcement in riot gear - took down roadblocks and tents, even using pepper spray and bean bag rounds to kick protesters off the developer's private land. but protesters say that won't stop them from building a new camp to block the pipeline's path. right now firefighters are still on scene of this warehouse, making sure it didn't

it took them 4- hours to knock down the massive 2 alarm fire that sent smoke billowing and temporarily shut down the veterans expressway. the fire broke out just before 3:00 thursday afternoon on barry road. the cleaning supply warehouse also doubled as an animal shelter. as 10news anchor dion lim shows you - sadly, some of the animals didn't make it out alive. 27:13 at 4:00. it was like 8:00 at night. like the end of the world was coming. billowing smoke seen for miles... around. fire cre arriving to find this 14-thousand square foot cleaning supply warehouse... fully engulfed... with the chemicals inside starting to explode. 27:45 in five hours we lost a lifetime of building and saving and dreaming. owner peter desouza says the building and its contents were uninsured. firefighters forced to rip into the building to attack the flames... also inside... a number of animals from the owner's animal rescue... birds, dogs, cats... even a six year old marmoset monkey

sadly, many were trapped inside... unable to escape the flames. two dogs did make it out of the building safely. the state fire marshal is still investigating the cause. an update this morning on the horrific crash wednesday night on martin luther king in tampa. five people were killed including a mother and two of her kids. 10 news reporter beau zimmer talked with one of the first people to pull up on the crash moments after it happened. kenetta walker documenting what she saw 44:15 this is so sad. moments after a firery crash wednesday night. 44:24 they got two kids over there on the floor. 38:44 its almost unbelievable. like when you walk up and see it its almost breath taking. like you really can't believe what you're seeing. now less than 24 hours later. she's still shaken by the events that unfolded in front of her eyes. 34:49 when they. when they put the sheet over the first child. that was tough. but when

second child and was pumping on his chest. that was really tough. walker crediting a good samaratin who ran in to help. pulling a mother and her kids out of their burning mini van. 33:58 i really think he needs to be thanked for what he did. i know in his heart he really wishes he could have saved them. the florida highway patrol at this point does not believe racing was involved. but they do say one of the vehicles was speeding. she's urging all drivers to slow down on bay area roadways. if not for yourself. for the people around you. their life and for their life to be tragically dismissed just like that in the blink of an eye just like that is just not fair. just not fair. in tampa, beau zimmer, 10news wtsp. two people were killed in the car investigators say caused the crash. a mother and her two children were also killed as they drove home from church. two others are still in the hospital. we have a lot to get to coming up at 5 on 10 news this morning. ian is in the newsroom with what we are working on this morning.
