do you remember the first time you reached into the cabinet and cross the line? >> absolutely. i remember it like yesterday. >> reporter: she's a wife, mother of three and a longtime labor and delivery nurse. >> i love taking care of patients. >> reporter: she stole drugs from the hospital where she worked to fehe like so many addiction stories are starts after a surgery. she realized the prescribed drugs made her lifelong battle with anxiety easier to handle. she took advantage of a common hospital practice called wasting where dr. orders a drug , 4 milliliters but maybe occasionally needs 2 milliliters so the nurse is responsible to get rid of the leftover medication. >> you forget and go home and empty your pocket at the end of the night and still have the medication. >> reporter: she visibly remembers the first time she got home and realized she had drugs in her pocket.

that that was the hardest journey of my life. >> reporter: but soon she built up a tolerance in the waste wasn't enough. she moved to die lauded a powerful opiate, so powerful to use when putting bones back into place. >> at this point i'm just stealing drugs. >> reporter: what are you thinking at that point? >> hopeless. >> reporter: as a nurse it was easy to find their next fix. >> the things that people don't understand is as a nurse it's to steal them from the cabinet? no one ever saw you? >> you have a login and your fingerprint and i would just go in and take it out under a different patient's name. >> reporter: she got away for it for a month. were there times when you are working with patients when you were high? >> absolutely. tons of guilt and tons of regret during that time. >> reporter: did you feel people's lives were in danger?

>> reporter: not something she wants to talk about but her bosses did. >> i was escorted into a board room and confronted that i had taken over 100 vials of the lauded. it was a cry for help. >> reporter: she's been clean since 2012 and spent three years hurting her nursing license back. she's working in an area hospital and hoping sharing her story helps others because her story is more common than you think. one of the higher-ups said she's grateful this nurse is speaking out. >> i think she's a hero. telling that story. >> reporter: she should you have a job again after what you went through? >> yes. i think people make mistakes and bad judgment calls and if you work hard and do what you are supposed to do and take suggestions of other people in recovery, that yes you should have your dream job back. >> something else we uncovered. nurses who graduated in the top

at a higher risk to develop substance abuse problems. two states and four officer shot. one officer killed in all of that in a matter of hours this afternoon. new york sergeant was murdered at point-blank range shot in the head and chest when he and a sergeant caught up with a robbery suspect in the bronx. the suspect shot both of them. despite the injuries the officer shot bat-killing the out of missouri two officers shot in the face with shotgun pellets after responding to a disturbance call. the suspect when inside after the shooting, smoked a cigarette and waited to be arrested. both officers are expected to be okay. and disturbing numbers including the officer killed today 53 members of law enforcement have been gone down
