"10news at 5:30" starts right now. >> how to tell a fake story from a legitimate story. we have facebook and all these news feeds and blogs, but how do you spot a fake one? >> how do you know what's true? you would look it up in the dictionary. it's not that simple any more. it's a tough fact to swallow at a journalist. you look at facebook, social media. a lot of what you are seeing, it's just not right. >> what makes something true? what if enough people read it, share it, pass it along, all of

the big question, really since the internet went mainstream that is the big question. >> right. but hoaxes are everywhere online. and if you rely on facebook and other social media to get your true facts, those fake stories are not real. buzzfeed looked at the top election stories on facebook and the ones that generated the most engagement. that means the most shares, the most reactions, and the most comments. they found that in the three months before people were paying attention to the fake news stories than real stories. buzzfeed found the top fake stories got more than 87,000 likes, shares, and comments a day in the last 100 days before the election. now, the number one trending article in that time was about pope francis endorsing donald trump for president, and that wasn't even true.

problem. take it from social media experts eli parriser. fake news becomes a vicious circle of misinformation, especially because of the way facebook and other social media companies watch what you interact with. because they are mainly looking at what you click on first, you know, you don't -- it can throw off that balance, and instead of a balance information diet, you can end up surround and the thing is that the algorithms don't yet have the kind of embedded ethics that the editors have. >> reporter: that's the problem. like we said at the start. look at this chart from buzzfeed. this is the amount of fake news consumed leading up to the election, and it was huge. it even surpassed that of mainstream news near the end of the election by 1.5 million interactions. the amount of people who saw

these cats from captivity, even from someone's backyard. that, of course, got us wondering, who out there wants a tiger for a pet? and really how easy is it to get a big, possibly dangerous exotic pet? shannon valladolid went on a hunt to find one. of course, her hunt was online. >> reporter: how easy is it for someone to buy a tiger? >> in florida, it's technically i will legal own a big cat. you can get around that to i am an exhibitor and purchasing an exhibitor license. >> reporter: it's fairly easy. i searched for usda exhibitor license online and found the paperwork. i also searched for this. how to buy an exotic animal. with a few thousand dollars you can buy a camel, a pig, zebra, or even a possum, but you can probably find one of those in your backyard. talk to me about some of the crazy things that people want to buy from you guys.

crocodiles. alligators. komodos. illegal iguanas and things like that. >> reporter: he works at pinellas county reptile and exotic pet. he has to break the news to customers all the time. owning some of those animals is illegal. with it being fairly easy to get your hands on some of these exotic pets, big cat rescue is trying to stop it. at least for owning big cats like this. the big cat public safety act is pending in congress right now. >> it would phase out the private ownership of big cats. e would be allowed to keep them. they would be grandfathered in as long as they registered the cat. they wouldn't be allowed to acquire any more or breed the cat they have. >> reporter: another thing, it would ban the public from making cash off these guys. as long as you have the permits and meet the cage requirements, you are allowed to own bears, lions, and even elephants. remember, it's not for personal

you guys some tips that we have gotten. we have collected throughout the week from experts, you on facebook that have been sharing. if you want to lower the costs of your drugs, number one rule, always ask for general aur -- generics. also ask for samples. shop around. you can use apps on your phone or websites on your computer. there is an app called blink health that will help you look around for the cheapest drugs in your area because the prices can vary a lot. fo pharmacy. they will never offer it to you if. if you ask, you may be surprised. it may be cheaper than what your co-pay or deductible is. look for coupons. google these things. ask for grants. sometimes there is help for people who can't afford the life-saving drugs. hop online if you want to read more. >> also on your facebook page, noah, you had a little bit of fun with a celebrity who saw
