conference about 10:00 this morning. there are two very different versions of is this story. >> reporter: already on probation in an income tax evasion case, marion barry has been arrested again. the charge, stalking. it all went down police say. >> a woman stated she was being bothered and stalk bid a person in another car. >> reporter: at a news conference, the spokesperson denied the claim. >> mr. barry has over a period of time lended his friendship and his support to the accuser, ms. donna watts, through her many stages of instability. he considered her his very

close friend, which is why today he feels quite betrayed by her actions. >> reporter: by phone, donna watts tells a different story. she says she had dinner with barry saturday night and returned to the district after 8:00. she drop him off, headed to the fireworks, but he followed her in her car, blowing the horn and flashing the lights. that's likely why police stopped him. she says she never claimed barry was stalking her. she says she asked the park police to retract the claim. as for the spokesperson's remarks, she calls them unfortunate and says she is not unstable and will do what's necessary to clear her name. >> reporter: so far, park police have not responded to

donna watts' claims. back to you. thank you very much. this is not marion's first brush with the law, in 1990, then mayor barry busted for smoking crack in a motel room, served six months in jail, and most recently on probation in a federal income tax evasion case. and steve mctheir and his girlfriend were found shot to death inside a nashville condominium. police have stopped shot of ruling this a murder suicide.

leaders have held a summit. the meeting between the president and russian president expected the lead to a nuclear agreement. both leaders said they would be willing to make cuts in their nuclear arsenals. sarah palin will resign from her postlater this month, governor for just two and a half years. so what could be behind it? >> if she did get out primarily because of the femaling of being chased, that's not going to continue if she stays in politics. >> it's not clear what her strategy is here, putting herself maybe on the national stage. >> she says she feels a higher calling to reach out to people and spread conservative values. she may be pursuing some

there is growing concern of north korea's missile launches on july 4th. they could pose a threat to japan. there is speculation the communist regime will attempt another launch in coming days. joining us now, john walker, one of our former colleagues here at fox, thank you for being with us. you have been to afghanistan in the past and following closely the developments there. we talked about what this new offensive was doing. what have we learned about what's happening? >> it's operation conjar. what's happened since thursday, the marines have become push to go taliban out of certain districts. they are trying to held these

districts, suffer these districts for the upcoming presidential elections in august. they also want to hold them. the nation building experts can come in with economic aid, education, health care, and bring these services to the afghan people, many they've been denied because of all the violence there. >> when you were there, did you have a chance to talk with some afghan people to get an idea of what their long-term vision was for their country? >> yes. voa has a large presence in afghanistan. when i was there last fall i got to meet and talk to a lot of people. i found that the country is slowly developing. a lot of people are hoping if u.s. will succeed. there have been complications along the way, civilian cables,

increased attacks by the taliban. the hope is that this new strike that jay that president obama is enacting will curtail the violence anbring more quality of life benefits to the afghan people. >> it seems we heard so much of the tension on eastern borders and what had been happening there and we're seeing this push from the south coming up. it seems is like a different strategy, even more of a peaceful hope type of strategy rather than brute force coming in. does that work? >> according to to foreign policy experts, this is not going to be won by the military. this is going to be won by bringing economic benefit, bringing health care and education to the afghan people. i guess what i'm trying to say is that for america to succeed in afghanistan according to to experts, we have to provide

them safety and equality of life. >> so what can we look forward to now? what should we expect in the elections? >> voice of america will be sending a recording team to kabul next month to cover their elections. this is only their second election in history. it's amazing to think so many people will be voting for the very first time. there are 41 presidential candidates. there are three that have risen to the top. the president is very down in the polls but if conventional wisdom is that he will be reelected. >> i'm sure it will get a lot of international attention too. we saw the response in iran. i'm sure that will carry over globally. >> we'll be watching closely. i have to tell you one thing

investigator investigators still looking into a massive fire in upper mulls burro. the siding on two neighboring homes melted and two victims have not been identified. disney world's monorail system is shut down while investigators try to figure out what caused two trains to slide. it's the first crash in the rail's 38-year history. also a frightening end to a celebration in indiana when a pedestrian bridge collapsed sending 50 people into a lake

former d.c. mayor marion barry arrested saturday night, accused of stalking a woman. a friend of barry's flagged down officers, claiming he was following her in his car. both watts and barry now deny the stalking report. investigators have labeled the death of steve mcnair a homicide. police found mcnair and his 20-

year-old girlfriend slot to death inside a nashville condo last saturday. police say they are not actively searching for any other suspects, fueling speculation this may be a murder suicide. more than 1.5 million fans registered for michael jackson's memorial service tomorrow but less than 9,000 people have been chosen to do. police are urging those without tickets to stay away but they are bracing for hundreds of thousands of people that may gather outside the venue anyway. the king of pop honored by the material girl. >> over the weekend madonna paid tribute to michael jackson in the same arena where his tour was going to begin. >> reporter: people, let's give it up to one of the greatest artists the world has ever known, michael jackson.

and then she quits. she said she's going to fulfill her goals in alaska and then has someone else do that. it was a little odd. i think there was a rational reason for why she wasn't going to stick around. her poll numbers are going down. the oil numbers are going down. who knows if she would have gotten reelected. all of a sudden she has this big book deal, lecture opportunities, make $60,000 per lecture. why not go out there, make the money, keep your options open and not get mired in alaska politics with the possibility that you could lose in 2010. >> what does this mean on a national level?

she's create this had defiance, but this anti media, ant liberal perspective that she's had, that plays well with the reblican conservative base. she's going to go around the country and rouse the troops and give speeches to people who are going to think she's great with that attitude of defiance and that's how she's going to continue to sustain her base and position her from her perspective, if she wants to run in 2012 for that election. >> you have even carl rove coming out questioning this. >> a lot of people think this is ill advised, not just because she quits in the middle of a terp and didn't have to, to pass the ball, t guard, she says. then she walks off the court.

she was going to have a rough reelection. the money is going down in alaska. she's having budget issues, they're having ethics issues up there. why not walk away from that? >> let's talk about al franken. what this does do is give the democrats that 60-seat majority. it's why the whole country is looking at this. >> the 60-seat number is important because you'l see people peel away only health care, environmental and all sort offense issues. lieberman said i'm not 100% on the 60-block on all the issues. but it suggests the democratic party is preeminent right now, have an opportunity to get things done and the republican

party is really hurting. you haven't had these nuers since three decades ago. that should be a strong message . >> let's talk about the president going to russia. this hasn't happened since the early days of bush. can he get the job done and what is e job to get done? >> he telegraphed what he was thinking earlier this week. he says, we've got to get beyond the cold war mentality. there are ways that we can work together. let's talk about nuclear weapons, work only reduce to go threat worldwide. the russians, i think the more they can bring it into the european side of thinking, the more stable the world becomes
