beltway. we do have a little bit of slow traffic on the op from college park toward silver spring and bethesda. here we are at the mixing bowl in springfield, 95 northbound looking good as you head in. h.o.v. lanes are moving well. and we do have some slow traffic northbound on 95 from stafford toward route 1. and after that it's a smoother trip toward 395 and the beltway. 395 moves across the 14th street bridge without a problem. that's a check of your tab tab. >> lauren, thank you very much. and new this morning, a tishooting in prince george's county has left pun person dead and three others hurt. >> this helped at an apartment building in oxon hill. sarah simmons joins us live. >> reporter: good morning. police are still looking for the suspect although they think they have an idea who the suspected shooter may be. investigators are still talking to witnesses this morning. but what we know right now is

police are telling us that four people were shot here early this morning. two of them, two men. one man later died at the hospital, another is in critical condition and there were two women who were also shot but received nonlife- threatening injuries this. all started before 1:00. it was the 6400 block of livingston road at the porto bella apartments. a argument broke out in a stairwell and shots were fired and four people were shot and police are saying the suspected shooter they believe is an acquaintance of these people. this is an isolated incident. they are not fearing for the surrounding neighborhood but neighbors are worried for their own safety. >> i'm totally shocked but not shocked because there is so much crime going on all over the place and it seems like it's never stopping. it gets worse every day and i live here so i'm really

concerned, okay. >> it's okay. it's quiet. that's why when i came out i was just shocked. it's pretty nice. >> reporter: now police are releasing a description of a suspect in this case. they say he is a black male with dreadlocks wearing a white t-shirt and black sweat pants and he was last seen leaving the apartments on foot. they would like anybody with additional information to get prince george's county police a call. steve and allison, back you to. >> sarah, thank you so much. we are following two major developing stories out of asia. first from a resort island in thailand. a plane skidded on the runway. the jet hit the control tower on an island about 300 miles south of bangkok. it was carrying 72 people. it landed in heavy rain.

co-piler and six others were severely injured. 27 other people suffered minor injuries. and now to north korea. former president bill clinton is in the communist nation today. >> lawa ling and una lee were arrested and charged with engaging in hostile acts and entering the country illegal, both sentenced to 12 years of hard laborer. doug luzader is following the mission from capitol hill this morning. >> reporter: this visit comes as a surprise, but the fact that a former president makes this trip means there could be a break-through. former president bill clinton set forth in north korea and was immediately greeted by government officials. the mood was somber but clinton is hoping win the release of laura ling and una le. the wo were crossing from north korea into kinda and were -- kinda and were sentenced to

12 years but it could go beyond that. clinton may meet with kim jong- il. they could discuss north korea's nuclear ambitions and the possibility of the north returning to the negotiating table after a series of provocative acts, including nuclear tests and missile launches. >> it could be a very significant opening in breaking this downward cycle of tension and recriminations between the u.s. and north korea. >> reporter: there are not formal diplomatic relations between the two countries and using the two journalists as a bargaining chip. and this could be a high lie coordinated effort -- a highly

coordinated charge with north korea. >> hillary clinton is also sentenced on bringing home been bringing home the three s. citizens in iran after they were released. they were hing to see a water fall and they crossed the boarder of iran. they were said to be arrested after ignoring border guards. it's a case of not in my backyard wnon it comes to guantanamo detainees. judges are reviewing kaleses of -- reviewing cases of 9/11 prisoners, including john walker lynn mouse owe have been

reviewed. the final say is up to president obama. the senate begins a debate on the nomination of the first latina to the supreme court. many republican have branded her an active john. john mccain is among republicans who claims her track record says otherwise and plans to vote against her. d.c.s have enough votes to confirm here. one of the main talking points at lunch today is the cash for clunkers program. it ran out of money last week. and it may not survive if it does not get more money. the house voted to provide the funds before leaving for break last week. and the home of a high profile d.c. resident destroyed by fire. her impressive art collection and years of memories also up in flames. fox 5 talks with her coming up. and plus a local community

telegraph road, the inner loop slows off and on to 66. let's take a look at 66. right now you're going to be on the brakes out of route 50 fair oaks toward waffle mills and passing 123, just brief delays. past this up toward nutley street and the beltway you should be back up to speed. in maryland an accident on the outer loop of the beltway just before river road. that's moved off to the shoulder and not causing any delay for you, but you will be on the brakes as you leave new hampshire avenue past coles village. smoother toward legion bridge. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. >> lauren, thank you very much. making headlines this morning, a virginia community divided over a school accused of radical teachings. the fairfax county board of supervisors voted in favor of expanding the islamic academy in fairfax. some say the curriculum is

violent and anti-american. one of the gradates was implicated in a plot to kill the president. >> how they could overlook the -- a graduate from the school doing that and say they're such fine students. they're fine students but they're learning the wrong things. >> we need to resist these people and make it clear they move bought six votes in there but they're not buying my vote. >> the vote was not unanimous. however board members who green lighted the plan said they do not decide on a school's curriculum. a d.c. family vows to survive a home fire. peggy cooper cafritz lost everything, including a vast collection of near priceless art. the former school board president says the inferno destroyed their home but will not ruin their lives. >> i'm just getting to the

bright have to drive farther to get to a post office as they are floating the idea of closing offices in our ayeah. a dozen in the area. 8 in the district. four locations in maryland may be listed as possible closures. virginia had 19 locations. the closest one to our area is a post office in fredericksberg. no closures or other changes are expected before the end of the current fiscal year. the st office facing a possible $7 billion loss this year. in an hour we'll hear about the long awaited purple line. we'll hear about an announcement that will connect prince george and montgomery county. it's expected that the governor will outline the route and decide what form of transit it will take, light rail or rapid bus.

back with a look at our top story this is morning as police are investigating a quadruple shooting in prince george's county. it happened in oxon hill at 1:00 this morning at an apartment complex on livingston road. one man is dead and another in critical condition. two women were also shot. they have nonlife-threatening injuries. police say the shooting stems from an aparticipant argument in an apartment stairwell. they are searching or the suspect who ran from the scene. bill clinton is north korea today, hoping to bring home american journalists laura ling and una lee and reduce the nuclear defiance. the reporters were working for al gore current tv and

delays leaving urbana past clarksberg and into germantown and through rockville. here at falls road, continuing on the brakes through the lane divide. at route 28, police activity crowding the left of the main lanes. and to virginia, 395 northbound leaving the mixing bowl in springfield here at edsel road. at the brakes across the 14th street bridge. delays on the 95 in virginia stretch from dale city, up toward lorton and the inner loop slows toward 66. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. later this month, the first studentsill begin classes at a new community college on the campus of the university of district of columbia. the new community college answers a call from the white house for more work force development programs and opportunities for young people to learn skills that earn

diplomas. and joining us now, the president, dr. alan sessance. what a need this will fill. what will this mean for the residents of washington and our area. >> this is an opportunity fors to express what is a compelling need for higher education in the united states and in this region in particular. one of the things we discovered is that washington is the tale of two cities. you have a population of higher education and then an uneducated community that are illiterate. this is to help bridge the gap between those two so students understand you can get to where you are and where you want to be and community college fills that need. >> and d.c. was the oath major -- the only major city to not

have this type of outlet for students looking for this. >> younger students and adults. one thing d.c. has been talking for years was a community college. before i arrived, we learned we had to take was embedded and make it a functioning stand- alone community college to give it the flexibility that the president has been talking about, to fill a work force that is crucial to the economy of this country and this region. >> and dr. rivera, what will happen to the udc that we already know? >> it has changed in terms of its focus nd the mission. so the community college program has been carved out to all of the two-year programs and now housed within the community college. in addition, the community college will focus on those programs that were existing, add new ones and pursue the goals of adding the work force development programs that are

sorely needed in the district. >> and talk about that for a second. and the president making this push over the next ten years, in fusing a whole lot of money into making sure the community college system works and this is the future wave of what the job force is looking for. >> absolutely. and so for us, it's more than just an opportunity to provide education, because every individual what is either unemployed or unemployable is also sort of a burden on the taxpayer. each of these individuals who we can proside an -- who we can provide an opportunity for better paying jobs, they add to the tax base and the economic sustainability of the region. >> and the future holds it's own community college campus. if you could talk about that. >> certainly. we are exploring several opportunities at this point in time and there will be a main campus and in addition there

will be several centers or satellite locations and our in tent is to be certain we have a presence in every ward. >> and we talked about dr. sessions, the money. it is $12 billion over the next decade to make sure this need is met and that includes d.c. now. >> it very much includes d.c. one of the things we have to focus on is that people have to graduate. when we admit students to the commune of d.c. -- the community of university of d.c., they're putting forth an effort. we are committed to making sure there is success at the end of the pipeline. >> and first classes start later in the fall. and focusing on work force development and pinpointing that technical academic certificates in expanding to

include what we'll call under underserved community. >> yes. and we want to include even the surf community. and classes begin august 26th. first orientation is august 19th. >> and dr., what needs to happen if somebody is watching, commuty college, how does it differ for the admissions process. if you're thinking it might be the good time to get at cerbats degree, what do you do. >> go online, www.udc.com and you'll see an application and at the community college, since we're open access. you can apply right away. there are many things they need to do at this late stage in the game, such as provide documentation for final aid but it's still not too late to consider coming. >> and community college might be just the answer. but a lot of people transfer, they take the credits and move on, perhaps it's for financial reasons that you cannot attend

unfolded here early this morning. police are telling us four people were shot here at the porta bella apartments. two of them were men. one man died at the hospital. another man is in critical condition. twwomen were also shot but they received nonlife- threatening injuries. this happened before 1:00 this morning in the 6400 block of livingston road. police are telling us that there was an argument that broke out inside of an apartment building in the stairwell. they say four people were shot by someone who they consider an acquaintance. but police are considering this an isolated incident at this point but neighbors are still concerned about their safety. >> i'm totally shocked but not shocked, because there is so much crime going on all over the place and it seems like it's never stopping, it just gets worse every day and i live here so i'm really concerned. >> reporter: police are releasing a description of the suspect. they say he'sa black male with dreadlocks last seen wearing a white t-shirt and black sweat

the b.w. parkway. 95 slows southbound because of a car fire near 216. a slow near 197 because of an accident also off to the right side of the road. and 95 delays have eased out to woodbridge and through the mixing bowl. northbound 395 on the brakes until you get past duke street and then again around the pentagon up to the 14th street bridge. on the beltway, the inner loop up toward 66, delays leaving annandale up toward merrifield. so slow traffic for you. past 66 you're back up to speed. on the beltway in maryland, delays up toward route 50 because of an early accident that has been moved off to the right side of the roadway. 270 traveling in at 124 on the brakesnd again from 370 to the lane divide.

the san diego school of medicine and the lead investigator on this project and you are here in town to help out with leaders in the forefront of this are in town. what are you talking about? >> we're talking about the vitamin d. deficiency. virtually all of us are vitamin d. deficient. partially because of the lifestyle. if you're a life guard at ocean city, you're fine. but with respect to cancer, falls, fractures, you're vitamin d. deficient. >> why is it so important that we're not deficient when it comes to vitamin d. >> people who are defish object have two to three times the risk of breast cancer, or breast cancer patients are twice as likely to survive the next 12 years if they have high

levels of the vitamin d. but women in general are likely to have about 80% less incidents of cancer if they have an intake of about 1100iu aday of calcium. but the only way they can know is to do a test. and at this point in time there is a finger test. you take a drop of blood and send it into a lab and you can get the information. and it's amazing. i think that's one of the big reasons we're here in washington. >> why are we not getting enough vitamin d. >> it's lifestyle. we're in the house or in the car and vitamin d. doesn't pass through glass and we wear clothing that covers 92% of the surface area and the skin is

preventing it. and there is no alternative except to take vitamin d. >> and a lot of the focus is on kids. we see youngsters spend more time inside on the computer or video games. is that one way that we can get a little bit more, is to just get outside and take advantage of the sunshine. and we should mention this comes from the sun. >> 95of vitamin d. comes from the sun. so the simple answer is yes. we don't need to sun worship. but the maximum amount of area skin should be exposed consistent with modesty to get enough vitamin d. but absent that, it works pretty well. vitamin d3 is readily available. but it takes enough to do the job. it's at least 1,000iu even for children. >> and i know we're trying to prevent so many things from happening to us. but we hear about skin cancer and so people want to take protection and we slather on the sun screen. is that keeping out the sun
