welcome back. the big moment, one of them last night at the mtv video music awards, was supposed to be janet jackson's tribute to michael, but the morning after the big buzz is coming from yet another public outburst by rapper kanye west. this time he took personal offense to taylor swift winning female video of the year. his fiance was nominated in the same category and swift was starting his acceptance speech when west stormed the stage. >> giving me a chance to win a vma award, i -- >> i'm really happy for you, i'm going to let you finish, but beyonce had one of the best videos of all time. one of the best videos of all
7:30 am
time! >> can you believe it? that he said that? taylor swift was apparently just too shocked, probably embarrassed to finish her speech and the show went quickly to a commercial break. later in the show beyonce won video of the year if he had just let things go. she won video of the year. instead of giving her speech, she did a little bit. she recalled how she felt when she won her first award as a teenager so she called taylor swift back to the stage and let her finish her interrupted speech from lar in the night. >> what was that? >> who was that? >> what is lady gaga's help? kanye west apologized but the moment is gone now. >> a little late for that. there's a whole bunch wrong with this story. there are those who believe it happened as we just saw it there. there are those who believe this was staged, a bit of a ploy. as tucker and tony mentioned earlier, strangely enough there is a talk show tonight that is

debuting with kanye west and i believe beyonce that are going to be on the show. >> conway is on -- kanye is on. >> can we talk about lady gaga? >> what was that? was she nominated for awards last night? >> she's so talented. i understand you want to be a fashionista. she's got a beautiful voice, for sure. >> guess i missed those songs. >> but this outfifth -- okay. >> she looked like either a flower or a lion. i'm not sure what she was going for. let's talk about what's going on with the weather. some folks are getting the kids ready. i know that you're probably going to call home momentarily. >> hey, shorts today. >> a little cool in the morning. we're in the 60s. >> come on, it will be nice later. >> it will be nice later, allison, so maybe layers for your girls today. lots of sunshine, cool temperatures during the morning, 60s. remember, we're headed into the 80s for later today. all right, let's take a look at the current temperatures around

the region. we've actually dropped off a degree or so. 64 degrees now in washington. dulles is at 65. winchester has dropped off two degrees. it's now cool, 52 in winchester. here's a look at the satellite- radar for our region. now, officially reagan national reporting a couple of clouds. not really seeing that here on our map, but, you know, i'm not going to call them liars. a couple of clouds out there but for the most part we've got clear skies across most of the mid-atlantic region. so the forecast for washington today looks like this. mostly sunny skies, a warm afternoon, high about 85 degrees. for tonight a cool night but where you would expect us to be. 64 degrees under clear skies. probably around 60, 59, 60 degrees in some of the outlying suburbs. 64 will be in town. five-day forecast, more of the same tomorrow, 85, sunshine. wednesday, thursday, friday, different story. highs only in the mid to upper 70s by the end of the week with a chance of rain showers each of those days.

that's a look at the weather. now we get one more look -- well, not one more but another look at traffic. that's because you keep saying you're going to leave early. we get another look at traffic with julie wright. >> reporter: exactly. i thought for once we were in sync here. >> you cannot leave early. >> reporter: darn! hey, out on the roads this morning we've got the lanes open with no accidents to report down south at the wilson bridge. up the west side you're going to slow leaving 236 heading up toward 66. and southbound 270 in the thick of it. germantown headed out towards the lane divide. so delays beginning before you reach father hurley boulevard. it's heavy and slow all the way out to the split. a couple of breaks along the way but you're never doing 55 at this point. you're definitely below speed as you crawl from father hurley boulevard all the way out past montrose road. if you are traveling the top stretch of the beltway -- 66 cle in right now not only slowing between manassas and centerville but delays as you merge headed eastbound to 123.

7:35 am
what did santana have to say. >> reporter: let's be fair about it. santana is shorter than me so it's tough for him to win a fight with anybody. here's the funny thing about the play. he said that he and cory webster, i asked him what happened. you know it's a funny thing, i don't know what happened. we're pretty cool. we get along really well. but you know in the heat of the moment, it's the nfc east. he said cory got him in the face so he decided to jam him right back. you saw santana's helmet got ripped off in the fray. five minutes later, there was no ill will between the two again and they actually -- if you will, they kissed and made up. the funny thing later on in the game too is santana returned a punt and got tackled by his brother, so there's a lot of family fueding between the giants and redskins and no more so than santana moss. >> not so much love perhaps for some of the redskins fans when they look at santana. the line for him two catches, six yards. that's not going to get the job done against anybody. >> reporter: no, it's really
7:36 am
not. that's why we need to see the maturation of malcolm kelly and devin thomas and fred davis. we did not see that yesterday. hopefully those guys will evolve. but you did see it from a guy like antwaan randle el. you know from his pittsburgh days this is a guy they keep trying to move out of the starting lineup and they did yesterday and started malcolm kelly. yet he almost had 100 yards receiving. if you're not getting it from santana and the young guys, this offense is really going to spurt and it did yesterday mightily against the giants. second year in a row, you cannot fall behind 16-0, 17-0 and expect to win on the roads against a really good team like the giants. >> no, but you can beat a team like the rams or the lions, the next opponents for the redskins. do you change anything or just go in thinking hey, we're going to win playing the same way we've been playing. >> reporter: i felt like we were hearing from the first george bush in office yesterday because everybody wassaying stay the course, stay the course. i felt like jason campbell was
7:37 am
saying there's no need to panic. jim zorn seems for some reason very optimistic. he was not upset at all with the effort that they put out there. maybe the effort obviously was not bad because they did try hard. it wasn't like the team quit, obviously, they came back. but i was a little urprised by that. i thought they'd be frustrated because all preseason long we've been hearing about the changes in the offense, they're going to go downfield, they're going to makeig plays. i didn't see a whole lot of that yesterday. you mentioned the easy schedule coming up. the quote unquote, easy schedule. remember last year -- >> well, i think we lost dave there. but he's absolutely right. the next couple of games are certainly against teams that are at the bottom of the nfl depth chart. so if nothing else, hopefully they can perhaps stay the course and pick up a couple wins and maybe that will give them the confidence to get through the next time they have to face the giants and other teams that are closer to the top of the standings. dave ross for us live n new jersey this morning. dave, thank you so much much. it is now 7:37. coming up later this morning, it's time to pick yourself up

in 1990 as a young captain, i didn't really understand how valule my military compensation package was. just to give you an idea what that looks like today, for a mid-level noncommissioned officer, say an e-6 with 10 years of experience, if they're going to come out in the d.c. area, they're going to need to pull in about 65 to $70,000 a year to replace their military income and benefits. and a lot of folks that are getting out of the military are really underestimating how much they need to have. they look at their salary, their base pay, but don't take into account what those military benefits -- housing benefits and other benefits they may have are actually wort. for an officer, senior level officer, it could be 120 to $135,000 a year that they would need to bring in in salary to replace what their current package is. so we want folks just to get educated about that. make sure they understand what's it currently worth. when i hear folks saying, gosh, i just got married, i'm going to havt's time to get out of the military, i often recommend they really
