love for my community and also my love for god and the fact that i know this very early on in doing package ants that when i would dance for my talent, people wod be moved like to tears and people would write me letters and e-mails and say when you dance or when you speak i feel empowered and i thought maybe i can use this to help people as well. so that's kind of been my niche in doing package ants. >> let's talk about doing that because a lot of people wonder what do people do after the pageant thing. you're a step ahead of the game because you started working on that now. you started an organization called lady diva to help young people here in d.c. and across the country, hopefully across the world. tell us about that. >> well, the lady diva corporation was founded in 2005. i was a sophomore at howard university. it was actually my first platform for the first pageant that i had ever did. and the lady diva corporation is about empowering young ladies from impoverished communities to have the audacity to dream and think

bigger than where they are and think bigger than what they have experienced. and coming from a personal experience, i'm from a community very similar to the girls that i work with and i had to have a vision for a lib raid future. so that's all we are trying to do with our girls, just empower them to think bigger and to love themselves more than they do. >> reporter: it's such a challenge because so many people feel closed in by the world around them that maybe they don't have that fight to go do what they really want to do. what advice to you give to the young people today? >> well, the first thing that i do is i expose myself. i expose that, yes, i had low self-esteem. yes, it took me a long time to realize that i wanted to be more than what my parents were and what the community that was around me was doing. however, i had to push. and when they realized that i'm a black woman and i had to push, they say, you know what, i can do that too. so we start there and then we deal with the root issues. we are all about holist

particular healing so we have to do the healing first before anything else. so my message is it's time to get real about who we really are, let's embrace it and let the process begin. >> reporter: and you have a chance to do that every single day. tell them about your day job because you work full-time. >> i'm on my way when i leave you. i am an english teacher at a charter high school. this is my first year there. i teach enish. they're reading the diary of anne frank right now. and just great students. right on my desk, tons of papers right now to grade. >> reporter: and the potential is across d.c. and the city. >> absolutely. a hidden treasure south d.c. is. >> reporter: you've had so much success already and i know there's so much more out there for you. we'll put the information about your corporation on our website. back to you.

>> thank you so much for coming in. >> thank you. >> your students are lucky. they're lucky to have you. >> thank you. well, do you feel like a challenge this weekend? >> how about going to some new heights while learning a little something at the same time. holly is at fort washington park for the maryland lighthouse challenge. holly, what is that all about? >> reporter: well, i'm always up for a challenge, you guys know that. this has to do with a two- weekend event and a big birthday. maryland is turning 375 and they are having a lighthouse challenge to get you to travel the state and see some of the more picturesque spots that maybe you haven't. so we're starting our challenge where you can can at fort washington, where we're live this morning. this is how it would work. you would come to the park, check out the fort and look for the lighthouse. so you see the lighthouse. come down, it's usually near the water. come down to the lighthouse, this one happens to be a white house and you will see a wonderful table set up just like this. a here you will run into tony

and alma. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> reporter: and they're with the chesapeake chapter which also happens to be celebrating our 20th year. >> 20 your birthday. >> reporter: and you've been a part like 12 years. >> that's right. i've been a chapter member in a long time. >> reporter: why are you guys so passionate about lighthouses? >> it's kind of like america has lighthouses and europe has castles and they're a structure that no one can find fault with. you can't be mad at a lighthouse because they're only meant for good. you learn about the keepers and the history, all the lives that they saved, the duties that they did, the loneliness and the memories. we want to keep that going. >> reporter: every lighthouse has a story. >> greetings, welcome to the lighthouse challenge. we're glad to see you. thes our first lighthouse, we'll give you your complimentary trading card, which is souvenir.
9:52 am
this is available at each of the sites participating in th challenge. this year we're doing trading cards and back has a timeline that gives you a history of the lighthouse. this year we are incorporating state symbols. for this lighthouse it's the white oak and we're having a special handout to give away to all the visitors in connection with the state symbols. and your handout is the full dollar bill with the white oak in the background. it shows the white oak because it's in a park setting. also the largest one in the united states, there's a seedling from this white oak that's planned in mount vernon. mount vernon is down the road. >> reporter: what have you got, alma? >> this is the national -- our united states lighthouse society passport book where we

get stamps wherever you visit a lighthouse. we will put a stamp on it that is on it and we will stamp. >> reporter: like that? and i take this with me? >> yes. >> reporter: how cool is that. >> all the sites will have a special stamp. and/or they can stamp a piece of paper and you can fill p your book. >> reporter: toney, i want everyone to understand sips we've been at fort washington all morning long, where all around the state they'll be traveling and what they'll see. >> this is the challenge. these are little models. these are showing all the lighthouses that are participating in the event, including the chesapeake light ship which is a floating light ship. these are in the inner harbor in baltimore. this is one of the northern ones called concord point. has a great deal of history. turkey point is the highest lighthouse. there's a bonus lighthouse not included in the challenge but we do have a souvenir for that and you don't have to visit the state park to get the souvenir but the baltimore sight. >> reporter: i've only got 30

all right. time now to reveal the answer to today's trivia question. what was the occupation of the cotton candy machine inventer, william james morrison. was he a chocolatier, a baker, a blacksmith or a dentist? well? he was actually a dentist. can you believe it? >> i was right! >> what is this about? he was also a lawyer and an author. but why would he try to hurt kids' teeth when he's a dentist. >> he didn't want to hurt kids but he wanted to increase business. this is my speculation but it's a convoluted plot. if i can just get some kids to eat this candy and if they
