point. deeds was down by 9 points two weeks ago. yesterday the candidates went head to head in debates. deeds was attacking his republican opponent about his graduate thesis which was critical of gays, working women and feminist. mcdonnell accused deeds of falling short on plans for transportation. >> i'm going to bring together all of the parties to get a plan passed. e don't disagree on the plans we just have different approaches. i'll bring together republicans and democrats to get a plan passed that has several broadcast. >> i have displayed my plan. i've out lined detailed plans. >> reporter: now during the debate deeds was also asked

7:18 am
to the fairfax county parkway is out of the roadway, so the closer to the fairfax county parkway, the better it is looking in the traffic cameras. 95 northbound still slow out of dale city across the occuquan as you travel up into the springfield interchange, very slow at braddock and over to 66. so we're talking volume, not a friday light. that's a check of ur fox 5 on- time traffic. steve and allison, back to you. police are hope tag bone fragments found in the backyard of philip garrido will turn out to be the resolve to two unresolved kidnapping. he is charged withholding casey dugard for 15 years. the police were back at the house this week. cadaver dogs picked up smells

the washington post calls bob mcdonnell a "culture warrior." and what does that mean for virginia? it means: bob mcdonnell introduced 35 bills to restrict a woman's right to choose. he wants to outlaw abortion-- even in cases of rape and incest. and mcdonnell opposed birth control for married adults. learn more about bob mcdonnell's crusade to take virginia backwards. i'm creigh deeds, candidate for governor and my campaign sponsored this ad.
7:23 am
it's practically a dead heat in the race for virginia governor. the latest rasmussen poll shows creigh deeds gaining ground against bob mcdonnell who holds a 2 point lead in the poll. two weeks ago that was 9 points for mcdonnell. dr. steven farnsworth is from george mason university and an expert on virginia politics. he's the one that we go to in times like this. what did you think of the debate yesterday? >> i think this comes down to which candidate the voters believe. you had a controversy w for a couple of weeks about what bob
7:24 am
mcdonnell said when he was 34 versus the candidate now for governor and what creigh deeds said during and then after the debate on the question of taxes, whether or not he would be willing to raise them as part of a solution for transportation or a part of transportation. so what you're seeing in this race are two candidates that are inconsistent. but it's a contest of which one is more consistent in november. >> what turns the tide of ed vo two candidates with inconsistencies. >> the key issue in this election is the economy. people are very worried about the jobs. the sate can't do as much as the national government on this front, but economic anxiety is a clear factor. there is also a tradition in virginia of the people who supported the candidate who lost the previous presidential election being particularly motivated to even the score in the governor's race that comes a year later. and so the republicans are very
7:25 am
motivated in this election. the democrats, the big question for creigh deeds is, whether or not he's going to be able to bring out those people, the young people who are so enthusiastic for obama, the african-americans who are so enthusiastic for obama, will they vote in 2009 or stay home. because if they're voting in 2009, this election will be a lot closer. >> there are a number of people out there who say that creigh deeds may have a good message, but may not deliver it so eloquently perhaps as bob mcdonnell. who gets the advantage here? the person with the best plan or the person who has the best delivery of their plan? >> when you have undecided voters as large as the polls are showing us now, about 20% of the electorate of virginia haven't made up their minds, you're looking at last-minute things. who do they trust. the voters may not haveeal
7:26 am
strong issues about one ssue or -- real strong beliefs about one issue or another and they've made up their mind. and then i focus on conistey because that's what something people like to see in politicians and they get troubled when they hear two stories from the same person and that's a eal anxiety from voters. >> and so much question about the graduate thesis from years ago and the drop in the polls, is that directly related to the thesis? >> i think that's one of the key issues. it's also true that the democrats in washington have had a rough summer and that will affect the way in which a democratic candidate will be affected. virginia, more than many states, is closely connected to the federal government in terms of employment and people closely following national politics. and if the obama poll numbers improve, that can help deeds. the big issue going forward, like i say, is the economy. that's the real challenge. and what these candidates have to say about the economy so far
7:27 am
has been not a great deal. and i think that what the undecided voters are looking for is what richmond can do to limit the pain that people are suffering right now. >> if the election is today, who wins? >> mcdonnell. >> dr. steven farnsworth, good to see you again. thanks for the insight. allison, back to you. it is now 7:27. undercover videos showing question actions by acorn as congress takes action. the head of acorn is set to appear on fox news sunday and we'll talk with host chris wallace next. and up ahead this morning, the redskins looking for revenge this weekend when they take on the rams. we'll talk to the junkies. that too is coming up. stay with us.
7:30 am
undercover video is causing outrage over the community organization group acorn with congress acting fast to block federal funding. the chief organizer and ceo of acorn will be on fox news sunday this weekend and chris wallace joins us from capitol hill this morning. good morning. >> good morning. this should be an exclusive interview with bertha lewis
7:31 am
froa corn. and we want to shed some light. i think a lot of people don't know what acorn is, what it does, why it is in so much trouble and whether it will be able to survive with a lot of democrats and republicans on capitol hill and in the state capitals around the country pulling the plug on acorn. we'll talk with bertha lewis and one of the chief congressional critics of that organization. >> and we're seeing some interesting video of some wildly dressed characters in a sort -- and it sort of lends itself to the video, two people posing as a pimp and prostitute, that they said they would use as a brothel. >> that's right. they went in with undercover video and you have to wonder how anybody could have been fooled. this young fella, the man who was caring the undercover camera looking like something out of shaft in the 1970s. and in any case, you have some

of the workers when they're being told, we want to start a brothel and bring underage salvador girls in here. and they say just say you're a performance artist or masseuse. >> and we sighed when ben bernanke said the recession is over and we wonder how far reaching is this and you'll talk to people in the know, some big business heads. >> that's right. let's find out from people out in the field, who have to make a payroll, do they think the recession is over and are we in the other "r" word, recovery and we'll talk to the head of federal express. >> and this week the talk is about the hope diamond. >> i don't know if you're into diamonds.
7:33 am
>> oh, please, yes. >> we got to see the hope diamond in a way no one has ever seen it before. i am literally holding it in my hand. and when i was holding it and looking at it, this 45.5 karat blue diamond, i thought of you. >> i was hoping you would say that. thank you. >> you bet. >> and you can catch fox news sunday this morning right after fox 5 morning news sunday. >> my love for him grows. >> that could be the key to anybody's heart. >> and look at that shot. beautiful shot of the capitol. you have the entire u.s. capitol. it is a nice day ou for a walk, heading to work or maybe just a tourist. either way should be a nice start to the weekend. >> was that a hat or hair. >> that was her curly mop of hair. >> okay. you have some clouds out there.
7:34 am
a cloudy start to the day. not a bad day on tap. we have to get the clouds out of here. it will look great. let's look at the graphics and we'll start by showing you the temperatures around the region. 64 now in washington. 63 at dulles. dover, delaware, 59 degrees right now. here is a look at the satellite radar composite. and we're looking at the cloud cover, keeps popping in and out. up to the north, north and east, a little bit of a break in the clouds, but they're streaming in from the south and we continue to see the motion so during the morning hours it will be cloudy and during the afternoon we'll get some sunshine working in here. here is the forecast map for today. what we believe will happen. the precipitation i think remains to the south. hopefully because this cold front will help to suppress and keep it down there. the timing on the front, i don't think it comes through until late today but i this that activity will be enough to
7:35 am
suppress the rain. cooler temperatures behind the front. high pressure settles in so a quiet day tomorrow and the bulk of sunday as well. here is the forecast then for d.c. for today. early clouds, afternoon sun, warmer. high about 78 degrees. our normal high would be 79 degrees. i do want to mention there is a coastal flood advisory in affect for the tidal potomac and chesapeake bay until 8:00 this evening. we'll keep our eyes on that in case of flooding there. clear skies because of the easterly flow from yesterday pushing the water up against the coast. clear skies tonight. cool overnight. 60 degrees for the low in town. in the 50s out of town. and then your five-day forecast, tomorrow, comfortable and lots of sunshine. rights now we have the rain on monday but there is a slight chance that would move up into the latter part of sunday.
7:36 am
now let's g more on the morning rush hour traffic. normally we see lighter traffic on friday but it's just not happening today. not panning out to be that. here on the beltway slowing at new hampshire. look at the volume out of manassas. very heavy as you travel toward the fairfax county parkway. the accident that was before the fairfax county parkway is gone. once you get past that, you're still slow as you travel to its vienna metro and the last mile to the capital beltway so you get a small break there. so lots of traffic and looking at 95, looking like a lot of volume. and heavy traffic over toward 66. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. ste and allison, back to you. the time now is 7:36, the redskins looking for the first win in the home opener on sunday and the key to victory might be shutting down this guy, steven jackson.
7:37 am
we are talking redskins game plan from the junkies at 107.3 the fan. and he played the most hilariously inappropriate boss and he's making the office -- just looking at him makes me laugh. we'll talk to steven carel coming up in the 9:00 hour. meet the volkswagen jetta. it gets an epa estimated 32 miles per gallon, and was named an iihs top safety pick. all for just $179 a month. and like all new volkswagens, it comes with 3 years or 36,000 miles of no-charge scheduled carefree maintenance. it's all part of why the jetta is the top-selling german engineered sedan in america. get 40% off this bonded leather sofa, just $299, with very cool styling and so affordable.

the wizards don't start their season until about three weeks from now. one player who is eager to get back on the court is gilbert arenas. agent zero has played in only 15 games in the past two seasons because of knee injuries. this off season he worked with michael jordon's former trainer saying it saved his career but he isn't feeling as good about his team. here is what he told the washington times. that the wizards gave him too much leeway as far as the comeback goes. saying in part, quote, if i say i feel good and you know it's supposed to take six months, instead of letting me have a four-month run, they should have held me back. rather than saying let's let this guy do what he wants to sell tickets, sometimes you have to protect players from themselves and i don't feel like i got that protection. the redskins will be looking to bounce back from a poor performance week one in
7:41 am
sunday's home opener vers the lowly rams. so what do they need to do to avoid another upset from last year. joining us now the junkies from 106.7 the fan. let me ask you this, have you ever seen this purchase pressure this early in the season against a team that went 2-14 last year. >> probably not. it's make or break for jim zorn. i talked about it earlier. if the redskins drop a game to the rams, i believe jim zorn should be fired and given his walking papers. he's not in the long-term plans for this team any way. he might be on the way out any way. he has to win against the ram this is sundayer he should be gone. >> all the redskins have to do is make sure they get to the stadium on time, that's probably what they thought last year. >> and it's not going to happen again. just get to the stadium on time and get out there for kickoff and don't turn the ball over. >> think there was more
7:42 am
pressure on cakes because he bet he would have to drive lurch to work every day and for a week, john had to make the hellish commute. i won't get back into a corner for some whacky bet for this game. but this is a ram's team. >> but let's talk about what they have to do. last week one of the big reasons they dominated the game is because they dominated at the time of possession and the redskins weren't able to sustain drives. the redskins have had a problem getting into the end zone. you won't get into the red zone if you have 3 and out every tim don't even give the rams any opportunity to get confident. >> but the rams don't have the they don't have the defensive front or the guys in the secondary. so i don't think you'll have to work as hard to score and move
7:43 am
the ball. >> very important question. cakes, for you,. >> yes. >> once the redskins win on monday, will you make a bet against the lyons? >> of course. i'll jinx the lyons just like i'm picking the redskins to beat the rams. but the redskins have to come out and have a dominating performance. they can't squeak against the team like 14-10. that will be a red flag for the offense as the season progresses. they have to dominate from the outset. >> and even if we win, we still won't know where we stand as a team. >> and caution, the redskins should win handily this week and next week and they should win the fourth game and get to 3-1. last year they were 6-2. don't get carried away. they should chalk up victories. >> that's a good point. because the last ten games of the season, only one of the 10 teams had a losing record. so they have their work cut out so how much can you gain from the softer teams in the league.
7:44 am
>> you can gain wins so when you do get into the tougher part, the meaty part of the schedule toward the end of the season, that you have some wiggle room. you can't afford to blow games against teams like the rams and the buccaneers. >> you just pointed it out. they have to win these games and they have to beat the rams and tampa, and they have to beat detroit and kansas city, because the last six weeks are brutal. >> and individually, somebody like jason campbell has to step up because he's had so much pressure and scrutiny. this is an opportunity to get the offense going, to get a couple of touchdowns, get some of the younger guys involved. if he doe't do it, there will be even more pressure. even if they win. if jason campbell doesn't perform great, there will be more pressure. >> but there is something to be said for playing down to your opponent and e redskins seem to do that. >> and if there is a repeat from last year, i will agree with cakes, i think dan snyder will fire jim zorn on the spot in the locker room and strip him of his redskins gear.
7:45 am
he'll have to leave fedex field naked. >> the scial teams coach will be the new head coach. >> we'll elevate him. >> as long as jason campbell has to learn nother coordinator scheme it will another season of redskins football. we'll leave it there. enjoy the rest of the show today. we hope everybody tunes into 106.7 the fan to check out the junkies. our lineup for sunday. the redskins pregame starts at 11:30 and getting ready for the kickoff. following the game you can catch redskins post game and analysis on geico sports extra at 11:00. i did agree they would fire jim zorn on the spot, but i do agree the pressure will be on. which you don't think you would have the second week of the nfl season. >> well it's because they didn't show anything in the first game. each for -- even for folks who thought they would lose to the giants, as long as you show that you've gotten it together now and they didn't show that.
7:46 am
and i thinks that why the pressure is on. >> well it's gotten to be check time. >> i'm scared. >> don't be scared. it's just football. that's what i keep telling myself. >> you keep telling yourself that. >> you do your job well, then hopefully you stay. >> it's not one person though. >> i know. here is a look at the map for the weekend. here is what is going on. high pressure to the north. low pressure to the south and west. we're between two systems. mild conditions. saturday sunny and 74. sunday mostly to partly sunny. it will become cloudy on sunday. 73 degrees for your high. regional temperatures right now, actually it's a regional satellite radar picture, we do have some clouds in over us. there is no precipitation around us. i know it looks like it will rain outside but we have no indication that it will. and there is nothing showing up on the radar, so that is all well off to the south and west. let's take a look at the temperatures right now. 64 degrees here in washington.
7:47 am
