9:07 am
wait for america to sox the world's problems alone. we must stand together to show that treaties will be enforced. we must insist that the future does not belong to fear. >> now the president is also expected to take a hard line on nucleares today. he will probably have some strong words at the g-20. are will the message be received and can he actually prompt others to act? >> well yet, tony, he had some real success in that he met with the leader of russia and together they agreed that youra would consider sanctions against iran. they are a truth trading partner and they have been against posting mir military for public. so going into this meeting
9:08 am
today, obama hopes that he'll be able to sort of emit that into a agreement or resolution that will again for the first time impose some sanctions or lead to that on iran. are we heading to a he nuclear issue. i know your newspaper is report there may be a vote today. there may be a vote today about taking -- the possibility of in the future taking some sanctions against some countries if they use the civilian nuclear devices. >> the idea behind the resolution is that a nation that sells nuclear technology to another nation and that nation then turns around and turns that toward a military youth, would be able to monitor or take back that technology. now you went be able to go into
9:09 am
a custry and say i want to take back the minutes, but this would lead to the military interception on the part of the nation or on the part of many nations that builds up a nuclear program. >> earlier this year the president was a new president and there was excitement about him. as far as other world leaders go now, is the -- what is the expression -- is the bloom off the rose, a little bit, as far as the president goes? >> on some issues, yes. when he went into italy at the g-8 summit this spring, he was a new rock star and bringing what international leaders hoped would be a brand new approach toward diplomacy and working together instead of the go-it-alone theory from the bush administration. now there are points of coral around things like climate

change where the movie who's moved slowly. and going into g-20 you'll see the effort. and there are some points of disagreement, however he's handled himself very well on this nuclear issue. he has obviously in his speech yesterday reached out to the international community and said this is a new era. we're paying our bills to the u.n., which was another point of convention in the general assembly in the past years and anything that we're interested in working with with other nations and we'll work together toward the goals rather than going off on our own. >> this is a summit that doesn't even last 24 hours and millions of dollars expected on it. can we expect anything to come out of it? >> there will be happy noises about working together on financial services regulation, on climate change. but you know the financial -- what is understanding is this is an interesting moment because some countries say they are emerging from recession and
9:11 am
talking about discontinuing economic stimulus but they are not quite there yet. but this sort of positive news emerging also leads to lagging behind on services regulations that could hp avoid a similar problem in the future. so when things are in crisis mode, that's when congress acts and that's when tadministration now there has been a little bit of slackening on that. >> elizabeth william street with the wall street journal. thanks for coming in. >> thank you, tony. filling the seat of ted kennedy. and a major announcement about work on a new aids vaccine. and actor blair underwood tells united us about a effort for a new aids project here in the
