7:01 am
with tony with more on the forecast today. >> absolutely beautiful, right on time too. we have a nice sunrise. we'll have plenty of sunshine this morning and then some changes on the way in terms of clouds and maybe a little bit of precipitation. let's take a look at what's going on out there. we'll start with the satellite- radar composite. we can show you for the most part we've got clear skies. we have got a few clouds but they're primarily to the west and will be moving in later on today. there's about a 20% chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and during the evening. right now reagan national reporting a temperature of 58 degrees, relative hudity 81%, winds out of the southwest at 5 miles per hour. the forecast for washington for today, morning sunshine giving way to partly cloudy skies later. scattered afternoon shower, a thunderstorm is possible, becoming quite breezy. that will be the main feature that you'll notice this afternoon, the increase in clouds and the increase in our winds. they'll shift out of the west
7:02 am
and be at 15 to 20 miles an hour, maybe gusting higher that. high today about 77 degrees. that's a look at what's happening with the weather. now let's get more on the traffic from julie wright. >> reporter: i didn't ealize you were going to see me with my hair. it's that whole delay thing. >> it looks nice, though. >> reporter: well, i'm lucky i put down the trough. all right. here we go. out on the roads this morning, outer loop of the beltway are there's an incident at university boulevard. the pace improving once you make your way past the exit. we'll keep an eye on what we find in our next report but already a slow go for those leaving the college park area heading westbound toward silver spring. inbound route 50 headed into northeast washington. traffic slows and again at the entrance to the third street tunnel. this is a live shot of d.c. route approaching eastern, all of your lanes are open with no accidents to report. that's a check your fox 5 on-
7:03 am
time traffic. now to the big story we're covering this morning. iran has test fired another missile overnight, the longest it says it has in i arsenal. this one has the range to reach israel, u.s. military bases in the mideast and parts of europe. the big concern is that the missile can carry a war head. it was the third round of missile tests in two days. the act of defiance coming before iran is set to have talks with the u.s. and other nations at geneva thursday. if there are not concessions by iran, the next step will likely be economic pressure. >> sometimes cotries like iran and north korea ll make this kind of macho show of force largely for domestic purposes before they make a concession. >> their economic problems are difficult enough that i think that severe sanctions would have the potential of bringing
7:04 am
them to change their policies. >> coming up in our next half ho, we will talk about the situation in iran live with john boldon, former u.s. ambassador to the united nations. an international tug of war over movie director roman polanski who sits today in a swiss jail. he was arrested saturday on an outstanding warrant in the u.s. for having sex with a 13-year- old girl decades ago. >> reporter: oscar winning director roman polanski is behind bars. the legendary film maker was arrested this eekend after arriving in switzerland to receive a lifetime achievement award at the zurich film festival. he could be extradited to the united states where he faces sentencing for a crime he committed years ago. >> this is a shock to me and i'm afraid the swiss is doing such a thing to a brilliant, fantastic genius. >> plante ed the u.s. back in
7:05 am
1978 just a day before he was to be sentenced. the polish born french citizen has made it a habit to avoid countries such as great britain that have extradition treaties with the u.s. >> my reaction is one of very strong emotion. roman polanski is an internationally recognized film maker who does our country honor. >> reporter: a 2008 documentary has prompted questions about judicial misconduct in the case. many now believe polanski is a victim and they're demanding the director who won an oscar for the film "the pianist" be released by the sweat authorities. >> i think it's an outrage. >> reporter: his hits have included "rosemary's baby" and "chinatown," a thriller starring jack nicholson. he's also married to actress sharon tate who was eight months pregnant when she was killed back in 1969 by followers of charles manson.
7:06 am
>> the polish and french foreign ministers have both appealed to secretary of state hillary clinton asking for clemency. it is possible the swiss could free him on bail under very strict conditions. we do know he has hired a swiss law firm. the u.s. has 60 days to submit a request to extradite polanski. the woman who polanski had sex with when she was a 13-year-old girl told abc news a few years ago that she hoped polanski would never be charged in the case, saying his exile and career impact was enough punishment. prince george's police are looking for a band of masked men who killed a husband and a father. three intruders stormed a home on marley drive in bowie early sunday morning and killed 39- year-old tyrone richardson. his wife and three children were not hurt. police are looking for the black mercedes they say the suspects stole from that home. several stores at a shopping center in prince george's county are closed as crews investigate a major gas leak.
7:07 am
firefighters say the natural gas levels were so high yesterday afternoon that there could have been another explosion. several stores were evacuated and it's not the first time this happened. this was earlier this year when a massive leak caused a big explosion in may, injuring nine firefighters. just like that incident, investigators say the natural gas yesterday seeped into stores through piping that carries electric wires. can you hear it? yeah. it's the grown of the -- the collective grown and the disgust of redskins fans after they fell to a detroit lions team who hadn't won a game since 2007. with their win over the skins the lions snapped a 19-game losing streak. >> nobody wanted to go down in history as the team that snapped that streak. now it's the day after and burgandy and gold fans are waking up not so happy this morning. >> this is a game they thought the skins had in the bag and stacy is with the breakfast
7:08 am
crowd talking to disappointed fan. >> they thought they had it in the bag before the first play in the game. once the game started it was a completely different story. >> reporter: i don't even know what to think anymore. i have been a red skip fan my entire life and that game was miserable from start to finish. in fact i have been reporting in this town for more years than i care to mention. i've never seen ben's chili bowl this depressing in the morning. look at all these empty seats. folks have been coming and going and grouchy and unhappy, except for a certain cowboys fan who i will not mention because he's about to run out the door on me. redskins country is a lonely place to be this morning. the only good thing happening is the cooking. look at him, the cooking. and my buddy here that won some money betting against the washington redskins. i'll tell you that is the only happy man in washington this morning. speaking of -- he's saying i'm
7:09 am
going to pick up my money as soon as i get off. now, there's one other very unhappy man in the town today and that would be coach jim zorn. let's hear what he had to say after that devastating loss. >> yeah. on the 4th and 1 call, we drove all the way down there. i didn't think we'd be denied getting in the end zone and we were. but there was no way a team could drive 99 yards on us, my thought, and they got it out and took it all the way down and scored. >> reporter: yeah, they scored. they scored and they scored and they scored. stop laughing! i can't take it. my heart can't take it. when i got in at the crack of dawn this morning, here was the headline. i think i'm going to drown my sorrow in a big ole bowl of chili. back to you. >> at least she's got the chili to try to help out this morning. >> a little comfort food. >> yeah, we don't have that comfort this morning. unfortunately we're going to check back in with stacy a
7:10 am
little bit later on. not her fault, of course, but to talk about the redskins loss. and our dave ross who was in detroit yesterday is back here in washington and coming up later this hour he'll talk about where the redskins go from here. we've got something to look forward to for you. also whether or not coach southeastern will continue to be at the helm of the washington redskins. >> that is the question this morning, isn't it. 7:10 right now. coming up next on fox 5 morning news on a monday morning, we're going to talk to the other candidate hoping to be the mayor of d.c. we'll talk about his vision for the district after the break. also ahead this morning, another round of missile tests by iran over the weekend. it comes just days before a round of talks about iran's nuclear program with the u.s. so what message will american officials bring to the table? we'll get some great insight coming up from former u.n. ambassador john fulton. we hope you'll stick around. it's 11 minutes past the hour.

suntrust. live solid. bank solid. it's 7:14 right now. sunrise right on schedule. >> yes. i'd be concerned if it didn't stick to the schedule. >> that was a good question for that young man. >> nathan in leesburg, enjoyed that question. sunshine is up, we've got sunshine this morning. clouds are moving in and the winds are going to pick up. nothing significant going on right now. winds are 5 miles per hour at this point. 6-mile-per-hour winds at dulles so nothing unusual or major happening. later on today those winds will pick up with the passage of a front this afternoon. they'll be blowing around 20, maybe 25 miles an hour and maybe gusting up to 30 miles an hour later today. temperatures right now back up
7:15 am
to 59 degrees here in d.c. new york city has dropped off a little bit, 61 there. pittsburgh up to 57 degrees and norfolk, virginia, is at 58 degrees. here's a look at the sat-rad for the region. a few clouds working their way in slowly but surely. later on today we'll call it partly cloudy. you see the precipitation there to the north and west. again, on this radar it looks like we're seeing some lightning, so some thunderstorm activity in eastern portions of ohio, western pennsylvania. the forecast for d.c. for today looks like this. for the five-day, 77 degrees r today. cooler tomorrow, 71 for your high. and very cool at night. overnight lows for the bulk of this week in the low 50s and in the 40s in the suburbs so it's going to be quite cool. highs only in the 60s on wednesday. >> looks like a comfortable week, though. >> yeah, not a bad week as we transition into fall. >> thanks, tony. let's check in with julie
7:16 am
wright keep angina eye on traffic. how's it look? >> reporter: busy. we have an incident on the outer loop of the bltway past university boulevard. southbound 270 out of rockville still on the brakes right now. basically from germantown all the way down towards the split. no accidents to report on the main line but you're definitely below speed here as well as in the local lanes headed toward the lane divide. not only do we flow in manassas but from 7100 trying to get over to 123, more delays to the beltway. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. >> julie, thank you very much. we're just about a year away from the primary elections in the district of columbia. one of the big races, of course, mayor of d.c. joinings us is candidate sulemon brown. the campaign i'm sure is getting into gear the ext year or so. my big question, what are we going to do about these washington redskins?
7:17 am
>> well, we're going to pray for them. >> that's about where it is right now after that debacle yesterday in detroit. you actually were a former volunteer worker for adrian fenty a few years back. now you're making a go of it yourself trying to run against mayor fenty. what are you going to do? what's your outlook for washington, d.c.? >> question, first and foremost we want to address the job situation. we have 11.1% unemployment rate in the district of columbiand we deserve better than that. we plan to address the hiv and aids rate in the district of columbia. it's number 1 in the world. we have 11.1% unemployment rate, we have $666 million budget shortfall. i'm planning to bring my experience as a senior financial statement auditor with a bachelor of business administration in accounting background to help balance the budget and bring the city forward to where it should be.
7:18 am
>> you have a very grassroots approach to where you think the city is and where it needs to be. a lot of people looking at the experience, though. what experience can you bri to let people know that you would be the best candidate for mayor? >> well, i was an auditor and audited the district of columbia government. the comprehensive annual audit for the district of columbia that the mayor's office and city council looks at to determine what the budget should be and what's going on in the district of columbia. i actually worked on that audit. i understand the district of columbia from the inside out, not just as a citizen but also as someone who actually worked and know how things run in the city. >> let's talk about that because you spent so much time here in washington, a city that you love very much. there are a couple of issues aside from the budgetary issues that people are concerned b one of them is education, another is crime. let's talk about education
7:19 am
first. d.c. school system working with the chancellor, how do you envision that working? >> well, that's definitely on our platform. if you visit our website, you will see that we take the school system very seriously. we have a 50% dropout rate in the district of columbia. the situation with michelle ree, we are fair and ju but if she's not performing and doesn't have the confidence of the district of columbia residents behind her and what they're doing is not working, then she would have to go. >> when we talk about crime, we've seen a number of initiatives that have been put out there to try to stem crime in the district. we have seen violent crime decreasfrom the highs where we had been before. we've also seem some controversial methods suchs athe checkpoints in trinidad, d.c., what do you think as far as the crime? >> well, we believe there's a direct corelation between
7:20 am
education and crime. if we can work on education and the opportunities and the jobs, then we believe that we can reduce crime in the district of columbia. i think that the president -- the metropolitan police department doing an outstanding job. they're doing the best that they can with what they have. i think that they new a new leader to come and help them out. >> we expect to hear a lot more of the name sulamon brown in the next year. tell us a little bit about yourself. >> well, i went to junior high school here in the district of columbia. i'm a tri-athlete. i run, i bike, i jog, i do art. i went to junior high school here, i went to college here. i understand the district of columbia very well and i have a lot of love for d.c. that's our campaign slogan, love for d.c., and we intend to win this race with love for d.c. >> we wh y the best and hopefully we'll talk to you more in the future. we'll put a link to your

repenting for past sins. pope benedict xvi is wrapping up a three-day trip to the czech republic. more than 40,000 people attended his mass earlier today. the pontiff is marking 20 years since the collapse of communism in that country, an overthrow of the regime that persecuted the roman catholic church. he will have lunch with the czech bishop before returning to rome today. now to the phillipines where the waters are receding, but unfortunately the death toll rising after massive floods there. the death toll now believed to be 140. the people swept up by floods caused by a tropical storm that struck over the weekend. experts say during the height of the storm saturday, it dumped more than a month's worth of rain in just 12 hours. rescue crews are still working to get drinking water, food and power to parts of manila and other areas hard hit by those storms. 7:25. coming up next, we are taking a closer look at iran's nuclear program. missiles there were tested over the weekend that have the
7:26 am
capability of reaching u.s. military bases. with the u.s. set to hold talks with iran, what kind of message will be sent about their nuclear program? we'll talk with former u.n. ambassador john bolton next. think of it as another washington bailout for detroit. this time we helped them out on the football field, helping them snap a 19-game losing streak. you're welcome, detroit! coming up we're trying to figure out what went so wrong. dave ross will join us once again to play monday morning quarterback. he was at the game so he'll talk about his experience up in the dome in detroit. it's 7:26.
7:27 am
7:28 am
7:29 am
it's 7:30 as we look at traffic on the american legion bridge right now. look at that fog, not having an impact on traffic really but it's quite a sight. traffic very heavy onto the beltway so we'll check with julie wright in just a minute and get an update for you. >> i looked out the window for whatever reason when i woke up and i could see the fog. >> could you really? >> i was like can i just get back in bed. >> it's better than the rain we had over the weekend and the sun is up and it looks like a pretty good start to the day. >> yeah, not a bad start aside from the fog. later on we'll get some clouds
7:30 am
moving in later as well and windy conditions too. let's take a look at the temperatures around the region. currently in washington we are 59 degrees. dulles airport remains 55 degrees. ocean city, maryland, is at 59 degrees. harrisonburg 54 degrees so most of us in the 50s this morning. all right, now we'll take a look at the satellite-radar composite and you can see not much going on here. we do have that fog moving down the river in some of the low- lying areas that's not really showing up on the sat-rad but a lot of clear sky to the southwest but up to the north is where we are seeing precipitation and the leading edge of that cold front actually goes down that way. that cold front will work its way in here later on today. as it does, it will bring a couple of scattered rain showers but the main thing it will bring is wind and cloudy skies. take a look at hd radar and we'll show you how things are shaping up at this hour. there's d.c. there's your precipitation. we are seeing some thunderstorm activity with this front now to
7:31 am
the north and to the east of pittsburgh, p.a. also to the north and west of pittsburgh some thunderstorm activity. all of that well north of here, but again ce that front gets through, it could trigger some activity in our region. so the forecast for today looks like this. partly cloudy, afternoon shower or thunderstorm is possible. becoming quite breezy. those winds out of the west- southwest 15 to 20 miles an hour, maybe gusting higher than that. high 77 degrees. for tonight it will be cool. maybe a couple of showers. it's still quite breezy the early part of the evening. overnight lows dropping down into the low 50s. your five-day forecast, much cooler tomorrow, 71 for your igh and even cooler wednesday and thursday. highs only in the 60s. that's it for the weather. now let's get more on the morning rush hour traffic with julie wright. julie, i imagine the fog is slowing some folks down. >> reporter: yeah, because it is quite a sight as you just shows you from the american legion bridge camera. it is quite a sight to have it hanging that low but 'tis the season, right. we get a little of that moisture in the air and it's
7:32 am
still kind of warm for some of you folks. here's a live shot of southbound 270. no fog here. for those continuing southbound out of germantown, all of the lanes are open. traffic flows in separate stretches. leaving rockville headed towards the split with no other accidents to report. inbound on 66 not but from 7100 headed to 123 and after nuttily street continuing eastbound toward the beltway, northbound 7100 at 66 we've got a crash blocking the right lane. delays begin at braddock road. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. big story we're following this morning. just days after revealing a second uranium enrichment plant, iran test fires short and medium-range missiles sunday. this as the u.s. and five other nations prepare for talks with iran about its nuclear program. secretary of state hillary clinton calls those talks a test for iran.
7:33 am
for more insight, we're joined this morning by former u.s. ambassador to the united nations and senior fellow at the american enterprise institute john bolton. good morning, sir. >> good morning. >> let's start with secretary of state hillary clinton. what she said this meeting on october 1st, she wants iran to prove it, not just say it. don't assert it, but prove it. how important are these talks that we are going into on thursday? >> well, i think they are a test, but i think they're a test for the united states and the obama administration. their logic is that making public our knowledge about the uranium enrichment sight somehow puts pressure on iran. but in fact what it shows is that iran is still deceiving the international community, still making progress on its nuclear weapons program. so e logic is a little bit inverted to say the closer they get to nuclear weapons, the greater the pressure for
7:34 am
sanctions. i suppose under secretary clinton's logic if iran explodes a nuclear device that will really increase pressure for sanctions. >> well, are sanctions enough? president obama said and the leader of france and britain said in essence that they will receive the harshest of sanctions. is this enough, sir? >> well, good luck with that proposition. you know, the russians have consistently refused to rule out sanctions, but every time they have been brought before the security council, and that's three times in the last three years, the russians and the chinese have watered those sanctions down. so i think it's very unlikely that a fourth sanctions resolution would be tough enough. the issue here isn't can we get a sanctions resolution, the issue is can we get sanctions that can dissuade iran from continuing to pursue its nuclear weapons objectives. obviously the closer they get to achieving those objectives, the less likely that any sanctions will be to stop them. >> let's talk about the news coming out this morning, news that iran has test fired a long-
7:35 am
range missile with the range to meet israel and also some u.s. military posts. what message is this sending? >> well, i think this is a yom kippur message to israel on the anniversary of the yom kippur war. aside from being a jewish holy day, that iran has israel in range. these are not developed for conventional explosives. that would be an enormous time of resources for inner. these missiles are intended to carry nuclear weapons when iran gets them to that point so i think this is a very clear signal iran is ever closer to a deliverable nuclear weapons capability and the idea we're going to chitchat them out of that capability is sadly mistaken. >> let me just ask you what i'm sure people are thinking and what people thought when they saw the leaders of these three nations there. how big of a threat might iran be to america and its people if we can be honest?
7:36 am
>> well, president mahmoud ahmadinejad has held conferences in iran. i don't know what their ambitions are but i think the leverage that a nuclear weapons capability would give iran is something we don't want to see and i think it's why the administration made a real mistake by giving in and cancelling the eastern european missile defense sites. i don't want to rely on iran's good will, i want america protected even if we're ready a little bit ahead of iran's ballistic missile capability. >> is it also too late to talk about going in and inspecting these facilities that iran was not forthcoming in even saying existed? are we on the right track as far as where we stand with oing in and looking at these facilities that we didn't know were there or hadn't disclosed to the american people were there? >> well, you know, over the last seven years we've been down this route several times before. this is not the first time this has happened. but i'll predict that iran will
7:37 am
commit to allow the international atomic energy agency to inspect this new facility, that time will drag out before it happens and time will go by that allows iran to continue to work on its program. and by the time they finally get in, iran will likely be well underway constructing yet another facility that we don't know about. in fact the revelation of the qom site at least raises the question are there other sites about which we're unfamiliar where iran may have backed up its nuclear capability already. >> and final question, sir. might weee a change of course after thursday's talks if they don't produce the answers that we are looking for? >> well, i think the only real way to be sure that iran ds not get nuclear weapons, unfortunately, is the unhappy alternative of military force against its nuclear program. i don't see the obama administration doing that. i think that leaves the decision with israel.
7:38 am
i think president obama is committed to diplomacy and i think the outcome of that strategy is a world where iran has nuclear weapon. >> john bolton, former u.s. ambassador to the u.n. thank you so much for joining us. >> thank you. >> allison, thank you. 7:38 right now. with a losing streak that dated back to 2007, the lions did have to win eventually, we just didn't want it to be this weekend. now the redskins and their fans will have to live with the fact that they will always be known as the team that helped detroit history of the d longest losing nfl. we'll look back at what went wrong and also try to figure out where the skins go from here. dave ross is back with our monday morning quarterback. that's up next.
7:39 am
7:40 am
7:41 am
we are going to play washington at its base and put a positive spin on the debacle in detroit yesterday. the redskins once again looked like they couldn't find the end zone even if they d a gps. you see the white line, you try to get to the white line but you just can't get to the white line. the lions elder the longest losing streak in the nfl, 19 games going back to 2007. dave ross was in detroit yesterday and is back with us this morning. >> you just summed it up right there. the second longest losing streak in the history of the
7:42 am
nfl. this is a monumental streak and the redskins helped break that yesterday partly because of their poor play. detroit probably had one of their best games. they have got a rookie quarterback that was very impressive in person but this really was about the debacle that was the washington redskins offense. they can't figure out a way to get in the end zone. 20 to 20 they're one of the best teams in the nfl. but inside the red southeastern and this is where jim zorn as the play carl has got to get the job done. this was the third down play. on first down they took a shot to malcolm kelly, which i liked. this is a little dump-off that you see all the time. clinton portis gets down inside the 1-yard line. here's your critical play. the defining moment and you can't get it with your stud running back clinton portis who is arguably, potentially a hall of famer and you've got to figure out a way to score and they can't. >> first of all, your defining moment should not come 7 minutes into a game against a team that lost 19 straight
7:43 am
games. fourth quarter the redskins went down the field twice. >> once that play happened, the fourth down with clinton portis that failed. you saw the shrug of the shoulders by the offense. it was like a collective sigh. it was like oh, no, here we go again. we saw this against the rams. >> why give up that early in the game. >> because they have no momentum. there is nothing there that says this -- that jason campbell is going to lead us down the field and score on a repeated basis. and that'she problem. if you have a guy like tom brady or peyton manning, you have confidence. i love jason campbell but i'm not sure the other guys in the huddle believe in what they're doing. i'm not sure if that's from the head coach or the guy trying to lead them but they need a leader. somebody has to step up and obviously, clearly that is not happen. >> are you putting this on campbell? >> i am not putting this on campbell because it takes all the guys on the offense to do this. he was running for his life back there, unseemingly every

play so you can't fault jason campbell for that. what i would like to see and it might not be in his personality is someone that gets in those faces and says guys, this is unacceptable. we have to step up now and get the job done because we have the talent. they believe they do. >> definitely talent on the team. there's a lot of people that put a lot of heat on dan snyder when it comes to losing. one thing dan snyder does, apparently he has good coacts with the schedule gods because you could not have handed the redskins an easier schedule to start the season. >> therein that lies the problem because right now they're 1-2 with that so-called easy schedule. if they get off to a 2-4 start and then you play the tough part of your schedule, then what? then you're really stuck. that's why these games, you hate to see they're critical games in week 2, week 3, week 4, but they really are because they get so much harder as the season goes on. real quick about the identity of this team. it normally takes on the personality of two people, the head coach and the quarterback. right now they seem to be the

7:51. you probably heard of the show hell's kitchen that airs right here on fox 5. >> but you may not know that there is a hill's kitchen in our area where you can learn to kick like the reality show competitors. holly morris is there this morning to learn some knife skills. >> reporter: see, i'm telling my knife story to leah, the owner of the store. see between here and here? i don't really have feeling because like two months ago i had an encounter with my butcher knife and the butcher knife won. so that's why my producer thought it would be a great idea to sign me up for the knife skills class. so your store has been open about a year and a half. >> we opened in may of 2008 but the classes with chef brock coleman started in march of
7:52 am
this year. we've been going strong, having a great time. >> and aren't a basic knife skills class pretty popular? >> incredibly popular. we're offering it five times in october. >> this is chef brock coleman. he is the chef that's going to teach us everything we need to know about our cutlery. >> we're having coffee with our cutlery, is that okay? that will reduce our incidents or accidents. >> you want to be comfortable with your knives so the first thing we're going to look at is the anatomy of your knife. i'm holding just a regular chef's knife and we'll look at five parts real quick. we've got the spine that runs down the back. that's what transfers the power to the cutting blade, which is on the bottom. here on the back side of the knife you have what's called the heel just like the heel of your shoe. that's where your fingers should rest. here on the top this part that widens out is called the bolster and it connects to the tang which is the piece of metal that runs through the
7:53 am
handle. and then your inlay is made of wood or plastic. so you transfer the power by gripping the knife well. power comes down the spine and you're able to cut what you need to talk. we're going to talk about holding it right now so if you would put your knives off to the side of the cutting board, put your celery to the other side of the cutting board and take your towels out and put your cutting board on top of your towel. >> why are we doing that? >> well, the most important thing when you' cutting is to make sure that you don't have any slippage. two important things, one is slippage and one is keeping those fingers out of the way. this helps you keep the food and the knives right in the right place. the next thing we're going to do is pick up your knife like a hammer. >> for redskins fans it's not that bad. no, i'm just kidding. it's a long season. >> hold your knife like you would, a hammer. just like a hammer. this allows you to be in the best control that you can.
7:54 am
let's look at our other hand real quick. i want you guys to give me cat fingers. >> the girls are very good at that. >> cat begins allow you to hold the food without cutting yourself. put your cat fingers down on your board. i want you to feel feel beard but pull your knife up until the blade is touching that first knuckle. the cutting motion is forward and down and back and up. you only cut on the forward stroke, so forward and down, back and up. forward and down, back and up. that looks really good. we're going to practice on some celery real quick. pull your celery out. make sure you get those cat fingers out. hold the celery down. remember the knife moves, not the food. so hold it like this and you're going to on the forward stroke, cut through the celery and then pull back and up.
7:55 am
now, the reason that y always make sure that your fingers touch the blade of the knife, it's going to be impossible to cut yourself if you always know where that knife blade is. very good, holly. i'm going to have to ask you to do something a little scarier. i want that blade to run right next to your knuckl >> i see. i move my hand back? >> that's right. your knuckle should guide the knife. >> gotcha. myfoxdc.com is our website. we have a link to hill's kitchen's website. this is just one of many classes that they have to offer. in fact we'll talk about some of the other classes and then we're going to do advanced knife skills. or maybe just the next level in our next hour. back to you guys. >> it just makes it that much more impressive when you see the chefs go so fast and no bad things happen. thanks, holly. we'll see you next hour. it is now 7:56 on this morning monday. coming of after 8:00, tips on

8:18 am
and you have four really good tips of the first one is get creative. what does that mean? >> well, get creative means two things real easement one is from a planning aspect, you really need to think of a plan b. you need to maybe look at some different kinds of investments, you need to get a plan. it may have to be a lot different than you originally thought, and so it's not going to be the old plan that you maybe had two years ago. >> right. and the best way to know or be guided through that might be still talking with your financial expert but maybe switch it up a little bit. >> absolutely. i mean i think the core here, and i like to think of it as conscious planning, is that you really need to have a plan. so many people don't have a financial plan and know where they're trying to get to. they were looking at their statements, moving in a forward direction and thought everything was fine. what we really are going to need to do as part of being creative is to go ahead and really think about what's most
8:19 am
important to us and then align our financial resources with that. we like to call it financial life planning sometimes. >> and that speaks to getting deliberate about your planning and also goal-based investing, which is the next two tips. is that a matter of just sitting down and saying i want to retire in 15 years or what have you, or i want to have enough money to send my kids to college. is that what you mean about getting focused and deliberate? >> well, i actually mean something a little bit different. for. us we've been chugging along with very traditional goals and it may be the traditional goal we had where we work really hard and maybe at a job we didn't like and then retire to the life we really wanted to have isn't going to work for many of us. we want to find the life we want to have now because we may be working until 65 or 70. and we may need to get creative with how we can get our kids to college. it may not be the traditional way anymore. so really thinking about what's important to you, really thinking about how you spend your money, it's going to be critical.
8:20 am
>> i also think another lesson we learned is nothing is as simple as you thought it was going to be. if you had a plan, throw it out. your last tip is there are no quick fixes. so how do we get there if we don't have a quick way but a good way to know that we're going to get there? >> let's talk about that and maybe we can come back to goal safe investing. the bottom line is a lot of us were relying on our portfolios to do all the heavy lifting. the 401(k) was doing all the heavy lifting. what we'll really need to do is participate in the process going forward. cash flow management i believe is a cornerstone going forward. it doesn't have to be fancy or you don't have to do it on quicken but know how you spend your money. so many focus on if i made more money i would be fine but the real key is how much are we saving. and then not thinki you can make it all up by the portfolio. if you take too much risk,
8:21 am
there's a downside which we all experienced most of us last year and earlier this year, so trying to take -- you know, get that growth, you also run the risk of losing all that money. >> we have to end it there, lisa with omega wealth management. great tips. thank you for joining us. >> thanks very much. 8:21 right now on this monday morning. nearly one-quarter of drivers on the beltway are not just driving. what are they doing? we'll have details coming up next. also two pieces of video you'll want to see. one shows a car swallowed by a sinkhole. another a crazy crash at the dover motor speedway. both of those are coming up. a little later we'll go back to d.c.'s hill's kitchen where holly is sharpening her knife skills this morning. stay with us, fox 5 morning news will be back after this.

news about what's going on on the beltway behind the wheel. all of that and more coming up in just a few moments. now, in the meantime october is breast cancer awareness month, but 181 women are celebrating a little early. look how they're doing it. they set a world record over the weekend for the number of women skydiving at the same time. >> the 181 women came from 31 countries. they raised over $900,000 for breast cancer research. that's wonderful. >> reporter: absolutely. breast cancer impacts every aspect of a person's life. long after the body heals, ere are those lingering psychological, emotional and social effects. prince george's county resident and 10-year breast cancer survivor, derah wilson, explores those issues in her new book called "beyond the boobs" and it's being released today. we're so glad to have deborah wilson with us live in studio. it's great to have you here. >> thank you. >> reporter: you know, for women, our breasts are just a part of who we are. i think a lot of us identify
8:47 am
through them and it's an emotional thing when breast cancer affects us. but it doesn't just affect us, it affects everybody around us. >> absolutely. and that's what the book talks about. it talks about not only the women who have been affected, but men also get breast cancer as well. there are such psychological, emotional, social aspects of breast cancer that impact us all. and so i wanted to write a book to not only talk about my story but other individuals because it's 10 years for me. >> reporter: that's fantastic. it was wonderful to introduce you as a 10-year breast cancer survivor. and i think if there's anything that we can say today, that is so much research is being done and so much focus has been on breast cancer awareness that we are making strides. >> absolutely. and what i've noticed is that a lot of media attention, there's this obsession with boobs, the
8:48 am
bigger the better. >> reporter: sure. >> there's not a whole lot of attention that's focused on what happens when you get breast cancer and you lose your boobs. the self-esteem issues. those things need to be discussed. and they're discussed in some of the stories in the book as well. >> reporter: tell me how you found the folks in the book and what do you want people to take away from it? >> i found the book by -- the participants by referral. i got one referral and then it just snowballed. and so it's been truly a blessing that people are interested in telling their story. what i had like people -- what i'd like people to take away from this is it's a book abt hope and inspiration. there's a man in this story as well who's gotten breast cancer. >> reporter: william. >> yes, the anonymous william. so i want people to take away that you can survive. i'm a 10-year survivor.
8:49 am
there are others who are longer survivors in the book. >> reporter: sure. >> and there was questions in the back of the book that if you don't know what to ask your doctors, there are questions there to assist you. >> reporter: how did you come up with the title "beyond the boobs" because like you said through magazines and television there are so much focus on our breasts. >> it is of the and that's what the focus was on. when i began to analyze the tv shows, the commercials, even the mardi gras that focus on the boobs. the bigger the boobs, the more beads you get. so i thought breast cancer goes beyond that. it goes beyond that because you lose your self-esteem. when you lose one boob or two boobs, which is in the story as well, it goes beyond that. you know, breast cancer goes beyond the boobs. it's much deeper than that. a lot of things the only thing
8:50 am
you have left to hold on to is your faith. because you lose your boobs. sometimes people lose their family members as well and relationships are impacted. so there are a lot of areas that are impacted by breast cancer. so we need to look beyond the boobs and realize that breast cancer is a service -- or a disease that impacts us all. >> reporter: and i think you hit the nail on the head. this is a book of hope and it is a book about faith. >> yes. >> reporter: we thank you for coming in and talking about it with us. again, it's being released today. and you have a walk coming up. >> i do. >> reporter: on the 17th. >> october 17th. >> reporter: october the 17th. we've put some information about that on our website, myfoxdc.com and also a link to your website if people want more information about breast cancer research and also where to pick up copies of the book. >> the book, and the walk all of the information is on my website. >> reporter: thank you very much. we're going to switch gears

cover the classic french cut which conveniently can be separated down into two categories, the stick and the cubes. today we're trying to get the cubes so we're going to talk about slicing our potatoes into slices and we'll cut those into sticks and then cut the sticks into cubes. remember we're going to hold our knives the way we learned earlier and let me move this and get the demo started. >> how long before you're really proficient with your knife skills. >> it does take some practice, i'm not going to lie. it's one of those things you need to practice at home. as long as you keep using the right technique you will get more efficient and a lot faster. i want you to slight off one edge of the potato to give you a firm work surface. then set that potato down so it's flat and then we'll slice off the other two sides like this. and then turn it around and slice off the other one. and then you're going to rotate is back onto one of the flat
8:56 am
sides with the last remaining piece in the hand that you hold the food with. now, with the knife tip on the board, you're much more stable if you hold it like this, go ahead and cut some thin slices about a quarter of an inch apart and that will allow us to cut some sticks. >> how important is it to have good knives? >> really and truly the quality of the knives are nice to have but somebody who's good with knife skills can cut just about anything with any knife. the quality of the knives means they look pretty and hold their sharpness for a while. now that we have some nice slices, we're going to slice these into sticks. so again using your cat fingers and holding the piece of food down, i want you to do that forward cutting motion and slice those slices into some nice french fry shapes basically. good, that looks very nice. good job, you guys. so go ahead and cut your three
8:57 am
slices into those until you have a nice little pile of french fries basically. excellent. that looks really good. now push all of that stuff off to the side and give yourself a little workroom and we're going to start with just one stick. i want you to take that stick and again using your cat fingers, i want you to use the forward slicing motion, guiding with your knuckles, to cut those into some nice cube. >> as we're doing this, leah, i wanted to ask you, why did you think that the neighborhood like capitol hill needed something like this? >> well, there really wasn't anywhere to get parchment paper or cake pans and that's the idea for the store. the cooking classes are just a really fun thing to do. it's a great day to be involved with community and having brock come in and doing these classes has added a great life to the store. >> and i really think that $35 is a small price to save all your digits, i mean personally.
