7:30 am
the fact that the president met face-to-face in denmark aboard air force one before taking off to come back here with general mcchrystal is significant. it also at least takes a little bit of the sting off of some of the critics who say he made this trip just for the olympics. he is going to meet with his commander face-to-face. this decision is a major thing for this white house. whether to increase the level of troops and actually answer the call of general mcchrystal to step up the number by some 40,000. that's the going guess of what they want on the ground. although they're not talking resources yet. it is a big decision and one that the future of the war really will be determined by this decision. >> of course the other big talk internationally, we had the talks dealing with nuclear issues in iran. no surprise that this weekend ou'll be heavy on members of the armed services commit easement who's on sunday to talk with you. >> we have a group of senators,

line and clear speak about how we all will be affected by legislation to promote health care for all? >> well, if you have health insurance today, the hope is you'll pay less for it. and not only that, you won't be denied coverage. if you get sick, your health plan won't be able to throw you off the policy. so there's a lot of protection in here that are really important for people to understand and it provides a lot of security for people who are really concerned about getting access to health care in the first place. if they do get sick, whether an insurance company will refuse to pay the bills. both of those would be prohibited under this legislation. >> you were on the board during e clinton administration with this fight. if you could get a message out to the viewers, people who are watching us this morning, americans watching us, what would you tell them as far as easing fears or as far as the questions to raise with their lawmakers concerning this legislation? >> well, we have a couple of
8:07 am
choices here. the choice one is that we don't get anything done here in washington, that we continue having a disagreement that's political. i think that's the worst outcome. the status quo is really not an acceptable option because if we do nothing, we know that the cost of health care is going to continue to skyrocket. and we'll have upwards of 60 million people who don't have health insurance within a decade, so that option is not a very attractive one. we need to keep working at this to see if we can't continue to find ways that are bipartisan to make sure that we make health care more affordable, and we get on the path to getting more americans covered with health insurance. >> how much of this, sir, is a question in your opinion of compassion for those people who are really hurting, those of us with health care insurance maybe no big deal if we get sick, but those of the working poor and the underprivileged in general, how big of an issue is this when you don't have health care? >> oh, it's a big issue.
8:08 am
we know that over half of bankruptci in this country are linked to the fact that people can't pay their bills. let just put a face on it. a typical person who doesn't have health insurance who works for a small business, that business doesn't offer insurance because they can't afford it, that family may make $30,000 a year. and a health insurance policy that they could buy may cost $15,000. so that's just not affordable for a typical middle income family. we've got to find ways to get that health insurance package to that person who's working full time but just can't afford to get the coverage. >> last question, dr. thorpe. as the executive director of the partnership to fight chronic disease, how does chronic disease play a role in this fight? >> well, chronic disease is a key part of this discussion. three-quarters of what we spend on health care in this country is linked to chronically ill patients. people with diabetes and high blood pressure. part of reform has got to be
8:09 am
really directed to doing a better job of working with patients so they can manage their conditions to keep them out of the hospital and keep them from being readmitted to the hospital. the second point is about a third of the growth in health care spending in this country is directly traced to the doubling of obesity. so to the extent we can prevent disease in the first place and to a better job of managing chronic illness, both of those reforms would make a big dent in making health careless expensive for all americans. >> dr. ken thorpe, former deputy assistant secretary, u.s. department of health and human services, thank you so much, sr. >> thank you. >> steve. we are following some breaking news right now from montgomery county where a boy who police say is around 14 years old has been struck by a car in germantown. this happened about 7:45 this morning. we know the boy was flown from the scene to the hospital. we do not know the exact extent of his injuries, but police say this is a very serious

>> it's good to see you. >> good to see you too. >> what's going on? >> well, fall is festival season. we've got a couple of this season. the big one is taste of bethesda. this is a tremendous event that goes on every year. every single restaurant in bethesda participants. what i love about this is there's a great place for the kids, there's face painting and fun things for them but you get to walk around and try restaurants like the burger joint and all the restaurants you love in bethesda and there's actually free parking. it's a great way to enjoy the day. >> that's great because this is always a really fun way to check out all the great restaurants in bethesda. the parking is always the key. what else is happening? >> well, right up the street is like a little gem. they are doing a festival. this is a huge indian festival. there will be lots of delicious foods. and there's fun things like henna painting for the hands, artisans, crafts, a fun and
8:38 am
interesting way to spend the day. a little exotic. >> you know i love that. indian food, always good. they have the felt festival of lights, which is fabulous. okay, a lot of people have the traditional date night. >> i think dinner and a movie is over. i think if you're dating somebody or been married for 15 years, try going out and doing something new. the first saturday of every month this new yoga studio called past tense which is in mount pleasant, they are doing yoga and dinner. so you go with your day, roll out your mat. >> wait, no dinner and a movie? you want to exercise first? >> think nice it is to stretch out, get a nice exercise in and then head over to radius pizza afterwards. you get 50% off your bottle of wine and you can have a great new york style pizza. so i like that for a fun date to do. two -- cool things. there's always cooking classes and tastings going in on andante city. so i picked two. first there's a bourbon tasting and this is going on at
8:39 am
acadiona. the beverage manager will walk you through a bunch of bourbons. it's a fun thing to do with a date. if you want to do a little cooking or hands-on stuff, head over to adore. this is in the st. regis. but this is not a very expensive class and you can get your hands dirty with your new partner or a date or a friend and learn how to make some pastry with the chef. >> that's fabulous. what's nice is that it's a variety and a lot of different things you can do. >> lots of ways to go out and have a great time. >> nikki, thanks so much. it's great to see you. we put all of this information on our website, myfoxdc.com as well. one other thing people might want to check out, we've got the bacon brothers in studio here and they're going to be at this birchmere this weekend so this is also a great -- >> who doesn't love bacon. >> especially this bacon, kevin and michael. they'll be joining us very soon.

take an award winning film composer, add his movie star brother and the result is a successful band called the bacon brothers. their sixth album in stores now and the duo will be performing tonight in alexandria. before they do so they are here at fox 5. welcome, guys. >> than for having us.
8:44 am
>> thankfor being here because you did a show detective birchmere last night. how did it go? >> it was good. >> great club. >> we played here a bunch of times. i don't know how many times we've been there. >> six or seven times now. >> we know everything that's on the menu. >> we always give extra credit for guys that come in the morning after an appearance. it's one thing to do it the day of a show but you guys are doing it both ways. talk a little bit about the bacon brothers. if you look at it, really you guys have been performing since you were kids. you took it to another level. it's been probably 15 years now. >> yeah, 15 years. it's very natural for us. we grew up in a household that really encouraged creativity. ever since we were kids, i was probably playing a guitar, kevin was banging on a can or something. same deal. >> and the audience too. >> and the audience too. >> is it fun for you, though? michael, you've been doing music your whole life.
8:45 am
you kind of split when you were kids. you went the music route and you went the acting route. >> actually they were very supportive. especially i think i had it real easy because i'm the youngest of six. so by the time i came around, they were so busy. you know, you get less and less worried as your children go down so you've had six, i often joke that when i left home, they didn't even notice that i was gone. they didn't have an issue with going into the arts. >> you both made it successful for your careers, though. tell us a little bit, michael, what can folks expect if they come down and see you tonight in alexandria. >> well, we have a six-piece band. i've got to tell you, the band is amazing. just every one of them. superprofessional. we can learn a song and they'll play it for everybody that night. it really is great. and we have a lot of harmony and most of the songs kevin and i write. it's all over the place.
8:46 am
some are really delicate, folks see things and some rock things. >> one of your cds and your label just a stake-off on some of the styles of music, folk, rock, soul and country. you put a little everything out there. >> when we were first naming our cd, everyone says what kind of music do you play? what kind of music d you play? so we thought it's folk rock soul country so we came up with a new category that's forosoko. >> i harry every now and then you bust out a little "foot loose." >> it hasn't come up in a few years. when we first put the band together, i said i think we need to embrace the beast because it's going to be our free bird. even though i wish i'd written free bird or "foot loose." but still that's what people sometimes wanted to hear. we started playing it kind of in a tongue-in-cheek way and eventually like any other song we've had in the set we just
8:47 am
got tired of playing it. >> have you embraced the acting and singing aspects of it? if people want to come see you perform in the band because they know you as an actor, you're cool with that? >> i'm cool with that. i always knew that would be the way it is. i think our job, once you get people in the seats, is to put on the best possible show and have them enjoy the music and hopefully, you know, leave becoming fans of the band. >> i want to mention because you guys are philadelphia and i know you're real proud of your hometown, hopefully you get a chance to go back home. you hope to get up for the mummers parade. >> yeah, last year they lost all of their funding which is a lot, three-quarters of a million dollars or something. but the mummers have always been a part -- we weren't mummers but it's a very much a part of anyone from philly. so we took our song and did a
8:48 am
remix of it and it's a wild combination of styles. >> that's great. >> so we're helping -- we're going to do a show december 5th helping them fund raise and hopefully put the whole mummers parade on some sort of an even keel where every year they can function without help from the city of philadelphia. >> it's got to be good knowing you're helping out the folks back home. kevin, everybody seems to joke about the whe six degrees of kevin bacon thing. were you adverse to that at the beginning? are you okay with it now? >> i thought oh, boy, taking my life and making a game out of it and i thought it was kind of a joke at my expense. but not only am i okay with it, it's great. i have an organization called six degrees.org which is a charitable website. we've raised millions of dollars. it's become, you know, something that i actually kind of enjoy and embrace. >> you're part of folklore now. michael, we can give you a direct degree of separation to d.c. because you won your emmy
8:49 am
for your music that you did on the kennedys and you can't get much more d.c. than the congratulations for that. good show. folks, check it out at the birchmere tonight 7:30 in keexandria. n, the bacon brothers, thanks for joining us this morning. let's get over to tony with a check of what's happening later this morning. >> very cool to have them here. good morning, everybody. i'm down in the newsroom. we are following breaking news this morning. a shooting in green belt has a prince george's county elementary school on lockdown. we'll have the latest at 9:00. then controversial movie director michael moore will be with us live. his latest film, which takes on corporate greed and the government bailout hits theaters today. also, peter yaro of pe paul and mary will perform live right here on fox 5 morning news. he's out with a new children's book and is working on a memorial concert for his long- time friend and band member mary travers. check out a pillow-wielding granny.

8:51 am
into it? >> i've always been interested in mushrooms. once i joined the club and was able to identify much better and having others there to help me out, you know, it just expanded from there. get the books out and learn as much as you can. >> reporter: and then head on into the woods. >> that's right. >> reporter: which is what we did. you don't have to go out far so let's go ahead and go on our mushroom hunt. we went over near the nature center. and let's talk about going on a hunt. what do you need to look for? what are the things to keep in mind? >> well, you know, mushrooms can be growing on the ground, on the wood. they're one of our primary decomposers to wreak down the trees and branches so you'll find them growing on fallen branches and things like that. some have an association, a partnership with the trees and so if you know what trees are in the area, you might know what kind of mushrooms could be growing there. >> reporter: do you usually find a single one or a group of mushrooms? >> it depends on the type of mushroom. sometimes they grow in clusters and sometimes they grow in little troops next to each
8:52 am
other. some grow like in giant clusters like this. >> reporter: right, right. when you're out, do you go in a big group, a small group? >> it depends on the day and the season. there are a couple of seasons that mushrooms come out, the moreels are only out in the spring so we might have a large group, 20 people to go. sometimes we'll get three or four. if it hasn't been raining and peop think it's going to be -- it's been dry so you may not find much, you may not see many people. >> reporter: so you want to go when it's moist out so you're happy to see the rain. >> definitely so. mushrooms are about 90% water. >> reporter: where are some good places to go mushroom hunting in our area. >> you can go in your own ckyard if you're lucky. some of the parks allow picking. check with the park management and make sure they're okay with it. the woods. you like going out into the woods because they decompose
8:53 am
the trees. >> reporter: they serve a purposor than just a good pizza topping. so let's talk about what you take with you when you go on a mushroom hunt. >> some people like to bring baskets. that way your mushrooms don't get too beat up when you're walking around. take paper bags. wrap them in wax paper. i like to have a small guide. >> reporter: this is a mushroom guide? >> mm-hmm. >> reporter: oh, wow, look at that. lots of mushrooms in there. some people like to bring a whistle. >> reporter: what do you need a whistle for? >> in case you lose your place, blow your whistle and find some others that you're with. a compass if you know how to use one. >> reporter: and we want to stress again, you talked about some places you are allowed to pick, some places you're not allowed to pick. take a basic knife, cut at the base? >> that's right, yep. it's definitely good to have a knife. some like a little brush where you can clean them as you put them in the basket. >> reporter: but get permission, that's the key. and then if you really want to
8:54 am
a heartymushroom hunter, you need the walking stick. how long have you been hunting with that stick? >> i've had this one about a year and a half now. >> reporter: wow, that's a good one. myfoxdc.com is our website. thank you. it was my first official mushroom hunt. that i can talk about. no, just kidding. and we have a link to brookside gardens and a link to the mycological association of washington. what are we going to do next? cook themup in a wonderful dish because they have cooking classes here, did you know that? >> maybe saving the best for last. thank you very much. our 9:00 hour just around the corner, but we are far from done on this friday. new details on the alleged extortion plot against david letterman. >> fox news has an exclusive look at a search warrant in this case. the details of which caused letterman to fess up to the entire nation. more on that coming up next.
