by noon today. and in maryland, workers are on 12-hour shiftaround the clock trying to make sure that the roads stay open. from the airport to the stories to the forecast, team coverage for you as the storm approaches so. we start this morning with tucker with the latest on the snow. >> snow on the doorstep. it will be moving in and sure enough into the afternoon hour, the snow will become steadier and heavy overnight as we are expecting one of the biggest snowstorms in years. over the next 36 hours. radar, show you the snow off to the south and west. and you're going to see it getting closer. char letsville reporting light snow. and out west, we're starting to getsnow. will continue to close in on the immediate washington area and most areas should see snow breaking out by about the noon hour. by noon, most of us getting snow.

the warnings map, winter storm warning in effect for baltimore, washington, all the counties in pink through 10:00 tomorrow night. the counties in white,that's a blizzard warning for places like atlantic city as they have heavy snow combined with winds over 30 miles per hour. and we're concerned even here in washington along the bay who encounter a blizzard warning. 36degrees right now at reagan national. we're just about at the top of the temperature, they'll start to fall back. we'll see that tperatures start to fall back. fora look at the bigger picture, i'm going to throw it back down tour tears. >> thank you very much. and we will start that look by showing you the look at the broader satellite radar. you can see not just our area but the whole picture. right now, it is producing rather heavy rain in portions of the southeast but closer to here, it's snow. snow across south western virginia, richmond is starting

to see snow fall. and then down to the south, that's where where the area of low pressure is. it's pushing all of this to the east, northeast. there have been thunderstorms earlier this morning across alabama, georgia and florida. and and now they are seeing heavy rain there. this continues to push off to the east there. is what we call a future cast. a model that projects what we expect to see. there you see snow pushing into the area, by this afternoon. tucker said by noon you will start seeing that. it last all night and into the day tomorrow. the heaviest snow fall period we believe will be tonight into early tomorrow morning with snow falling at a rate of up to 2 cxsgconnum2 inches an hour. and by late saturday, begins to clear out. sunday looks clear. monday clear. snow developing, not too long from now. daytime accumulation 3-rbgs to 5 inches today. 35degrees during the morning

hours and now up to 36 as tucker said. the temperatures drop off starting when the snow starts. winter storm warning into effect at 10:00 this morning and last until 10:00 saturday night. that's a look at what's happening. an update coming up and all day long. back to you. >> thank you so much. of course, with that much snow comes travel troubles and flights are already canceled at local airports. >> here is a live look outside of reagan national where things are busy this morning. we are lye inside the airport now with more. looks empty. what's going on? >> reporter: i'm sorry, i didn't hear you. >> doesn't look as crowded. what's going on? >> reporter: well, it comes in waves depending on when the flights are leaving. and this morning just a cloud of people around 4:00. i guess nobody wanted to take the risk that their flight doesn't go out.

flights are taking out, but one person said, she won't believe it until she gets on her plane. that's going to change as the storm comes in. if you haven't rebooked your flight, well it may be too late. passengers arrived early not taking any chances that they'll get snowed in. the major airlines have already canceled flights starting early this afternoon and all day saturday with more flight sunday morning also expected to be canceled. now that lead to a flurry at the airport as people tried to reschedule flights home or salvage vacation plans before the storm hit. after the storm, it could take several flights to catch another flight. some people had to rebook more than once. >> until a month ago. i have a lot of friends here, but i wanted to get home. >> r: now a number of people we talked to said -- a number of people we talked to said that they called earlier in the week, rebooked and as

the storm moved earlier, they rebooked and rebooked. and a lot of people are getting creative. one couple said they are going to new york and then to north carolina all the way down to miami for the super bowl. and we ran into another former colleague who is on his way to barbados. so all kinds of switching going on. the airlines seem to be work with people as best as possible. but of course, the flights will be canceled later today. get out now. >> thank you so much. we go from the airport to the rails. reminder, if you are relying on metro, with more than 8-inches of snow, they shut down the above ground stations and we are expected to get the 8 inches. at that point, which will likely be sometime overnight tonight, only underground trains will be providing service.

amtrak has canceled most of its service in the dc area. you can get the updates at myfoxdc.com. it set off ashopper frenzy with storms like this. the shovels and the ice melt are selling out a. long with battery, generators and other splice. expect the long lines there and the packed parking lot which is what i found at the grocery store yesterday. a big crowd yesterday and a big crowd again this morning. >> reporter: well, yu know, we experienced that yesterday at the grocery store. and i have to tell you, one of my close girlfriends said, could you please tell everybody to be nice at the grocery store. don't yell, don't push, don't throw things and drop things. this is what the line is. and i do not expect the line to get any better. in fact, it's gotten nothing but worse since we've been here at 5:00 a.m. it's been interesting to see what people buy.

really will it feel out of place? >> it may. what's happened, it's take tennessee spotlight this year for the advertising buzz. and it's going to be carefully looked for and watched by the audience. and it has played a pretty critical role in the conversation around the super bowl this year and magnifying. >> is that the big buzz or are we not waiting for the new bush ad? or new ce ad? >> well, i think that's it. but many of the brand advertisers are going to be following the same strait jus they have followed in the last several years. very similar. using humor. going to be using animals, using children, using all the different devices that advertisers typically use to engage audiences. i don't think many surprises there, but the audience is eagerly awaiting the ads. >> let's get to some of those.

270,000 prius hybrid vehicles. more on the details as troubles continue for toyota. >> yeah, this was the last thing that toyota needed this morning. the president of toyota usa says the push is on to get the car accelerators fixed as soon as possible. while the president of the entire company apologized promising better quality control. letters go out today to owners. meantime, it looked like the auto maker could be preparing a recall of the prius. >> reporter: it looks like the 2010 prius could be recalled. more than 27 5 0,000 vehicles could be recalled. >> because of the other kearns the other pedals, it may have caused confusion w the prius, it's a hybrid and the braking system works differently. >> reporter: toyota has yet to comment on the report that was published in japan.

but if true, it comes just hours after a spokesperson said the company wasn't convinced a recall was necessary. however, a u.s. department of transportation inquiry into the prius may have influenced the auto maker to reconsider. >> taking action and restore confidence in that car. >> reporter: eight models including the best selling camry have been recalled, affecting millions of vehicles. >> i'm a little concerned. basically, the safety, my wife drives the car. i'm hoping they're being honest about the fix. and i'm going to give them an opportunity to prove themselves. >> reporter: and if you thought that was bad, there's word the auto giant is also investigating possible problems with the brakes in its luxury lexus hybrid. so we'll continue to follow this story. i'm sure there's more to come. >> thank you. and we are still following

9:32 right now. before we check in, we continue to take a look at the storm approaching. cue the jaws music there. is virginia right now as we head, traffic on 77 and 81 as we're getting closer and closer. we've had reports of flakes already. sneaking up to the west a little bit. >> graphics, storms coming. and reports of snow falling.

>> new reports. and i'm going to show you radar in a second. and it's zeroing in on the washington area. >> such a huge storm. but as the bull's eye right here. >> yeah, once the snow starts to fall, it takes a couple of hours to reach the ground. and then we're off and running and then heavy snow around. >> not going to want to go back in the water. >> no, another snow flake. >> you're ready to call it a winter. >> yeah. yeah, reports of snow off to the south and west. and you can see the snow flying at this hour in places like charlottes virgin islands fredsburg, starting to see some flakes. here in washington, not yet. i just looked out the window. but in the next hour, i wouldn't be surprised if we don't start seeing the light snow flakes and it will fill in

and we should be dealing with a light to moderate snow across the washington area by early afternoon. push on. satellite radar. what's going on here across the area. this is the atmosphere just getting saturated. nothing touching the ground but certainly off to the south the west with snow falling at this hour and a lot of rain. look how big the storm system is. very, very impressive. tapping into the gulf moisture, look at the thunderstorms fired up earlier today. look at the rain train there across southeast georgia and western florida. reports of fooding down here. you get idea. this is pushing off to the north and east and once it gets off the coast, it's going to explode into an old fashioned nor'easter and a powerful one as the low pressure bottoms out

by saturday morning. for us, steady, snow during the course of the afternoon today. and heavy snow tonight. in fact, snow fall rates could reach 1 to 2 inches an hour overnight tonight. and then finally out of here by tomorrow morning. temperatures right now, we might be able to escape sticking on the's for the next couple of hours. temperatures above 32 here in washington. january1922, we had 20 inches of snow in washington. and you can see 20 in 1899. 1979, to the 8.7. and december, 16.4. the top six sit possible when all is said and done will measure if top ten. more on snow accumulations in a second. 36 in washington. the next hour or two as the atmosphere cools down, won't stick on the break they'll quickly falback and then off and running. i want to toss it down. i showed you the top storms in

history. this is going to rival it. >> yeah, it really is. we think it will wind uin the top ten. unusual top two top ten storms during the same winter. of course, the big storm back on december 19th. we, you know, we look at the forecast and we tweak it a little bit as time goes by. we haven't tweaked these snow fall totals. we feel comfortable. let me show them to you. before it all ends saturday night. generally speak from washington to baltimore to fredrick, east, 16 to 24 inches from the storm whit ends. down to the south and west, 22 inches or more. that's what we call the sweet spot. and that's close tore the mountains you will see there. and off to the south and east,

we believe that you will get a little bit less snow, but still a lot. 8 to 16 inches. some will depend on sleet mixing in. there's some indications that you may get a ittle, but more and more has gone away as time as gone by. here's the forecast. winter storm warning in effect in about 25 minutes. 24 minutes. it last until saturday at 10:00 at night. snow develops shortly here in the area. daytime accumulation, 3 to 6 inches. our high, 36 degrees which is where we are now. tonight, heavy snow accumulations. the rates could be 1 to 2 inches per hour. overnight low, 28. the other thing to know, the winds pick up, 15 to 25 miles per hour. overnight, i would not be on the roads. whiteout conditions, accumulations during the

nighttime hour, 10 to 15 inches. snow during the day tomorrow. very gradually, deintensifies and then becomes, wraps up around 6:00 or so. sunday, cold. no melting. monday, no melting. tuesday not only no melting but maybe additional snow on top of that. more about that later. back to you now. will thank you so much. the district of columbia has declared a snow emergency. what does that mean? early w pay close attention to the snow evacuation routes. these are along major roads that crews plow first. drivers can face hundreds of dollars in fines if they don't move their cars. the airport a disappointing place. >> travelers are rushing to change last-minute plans including one very important passenger, they caught secretary of state hillary clinton this morning. this was just a few minutes ago

as secretary of state clinton was trying to get out of town. now live once again from the airport with more on the big escape. >> reporter: good morning. you know, i bet secretary of state hillary clinton didn't have much of a problem rebooking any flights to get out of town. she looked set. i gave her a waive and asked her if she was getting out of town, she said, yep, the snow is coming. like a lot of people, she is getting out of town before they get snowed in from the storm. sit slowed down a bit here. but all the flights right now seem to be going out ontime. but as the day goes on, those will change to canceled. passengers began arriving at 4:00 a.m. this morning, almost two hours before the first flight left. the major airplanes canceled

flights starting this afternoon and all day saturday. people trying to get home and salvage vacation plans got online and on the phone trying to find another flight. airlines are waiving change fees, but even with that, it wasn't easy for some colts fans headed to the super bowl. >> reporter: it was very difficult. everything was sold out. they tried to put us on separate day, separate plane, flying sunday morning cutting too close for comfort. we're doing two lay-overs. going to new york and then on to charlotte and on to fort lauderdale. >> i was thinking about running a car and driving tall way there. that's how desperate we were. >> reporter: now that couple, their super bowl tickets cost a lot more than the plane tickets so. whatever happened, they were going to get down there for the

super bowl. if you don't get out today, you probably won't get out until at least sunday. we are even expecting some flights sunday morning to be canceled. the airlines say they'll re- evaluate the situation sunday morning. they have re-positioned planes as well. and they hope of the some flights taking off again on sunday. but if the last snowstorm is an indication, it could take days for them to get back on schedule. back to you. >> are you seeing more colts or saints jerseys this morning? >> i've seen a few more saintier sis than colts. i warned those folks headed to miami that they might find saints fans on the plane. >> i think so. play nice before they get there. thank you. you might find long lines. a different place, but
