how realistic are the plans to pull out next summer and what should we make of the secret talks with the taliban. and a big rally planned today in prince george's county alley's re- election bid. fox 5 morning news continues right now. starting off with a nice view of the horizon. sunshine already on this thursday morning. going to be a beautiful day. glad you're along with us to get started on this thursday morning, october 7th. very nice. >> how is it october 7th already? >> let's enjoy what we have today because it will be nice. >> tony perkins is joining us right now. good morning, i'm allison seymour. and i don't think i said that. >> we know who you are. >> people know by now. >> if you don't know me by now -- >> great song. >> yeah. >> good morning to you allison and steve chenevey and everybody. we have fine weather conditions on the way.
7:01 am
we get off to a cool start but wait until you see what we have in store. let's start with the satellite radar composite. showing you no precipitation this morning. the precip is done. it's out of here. we did get some rain showers overnight and frankly about four hours ago i encountered misty conditions. but right now we're left with clouds streaming through. that is about it. the rain has pushed off to the north and east and we're going to see more improvement as the day progresses. current temperature, still cool. 52 degrees in the capital, 50 in baltimore, 53 in fredericksberg. and dulles is at 47 degrees. but check out the forecast for today. mostly sunny skies, downright breezy at times. those winds could gust up to 30 miles per hour. but we don't care about that. it's the temperature we're looking at. 73 degrees for your high today. not bad at all. coming up in a couple of moments, we'll show you the five-day forecast. you'll like that too. here is julie wright. can't guarantee you'll like
7:02 am
what she is showing you. >> and i tried to color coordinate. >> and that's not what i meant. you look beautiful. >> thank you. tony, you're right, it is very busy on the roads. the crew in sky fox has had their hands full with beltway accidents and now over 270, trying to make the trip out of rockville approaching salisbury road, southbound in a big backup leaving germantown toward falls road. only one lane is able to get by. i hear them, but do we have them? let's pop up the shot. here we go. in the main line near falls road and on 270, and mainly -- the situation is ongoing and changing as we speak because some traffic is getting by to the right and left. so this is going to be the six lane stretch southbound at montrose toward the lane divide. in the backup there is another crash at falls road with only one lane getting through. so delays are stalled at 118 out of germantown southbound on
7:03 am
270 trying to work out toward the lane divide. so two separate accidents, one at falls and the other one at the lane divide and you are crawling from 118 out of germantown. to the beltway, that's where we had earlier problem this is morning. the crash on the outer loop of the beltway after 650, moving that over to the shoulder so lanes are open. now on the inner loop after 650 but before submitting to 95, crash on the right side of the road. delay from the outer loop extend from greenbelt around to 270, the inner loop slows from colesville northbound on i-95 in college park. in virginia, sound bound eye 95 against the rush hour flow toward newington and 7100, accident on the right side and this is against the flow. congested out of dale city and lorton headed up to duke street on 395. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. new details in our top story this morning. the the woman who was struck by a hit-and-run driver in the
7:04 am
dupont circle area last night has died. the accident happened at about 1:30 this morning in the 1300 block of connecticut avenue in northwest d.c. that's where sarah simmons has been this morning as this has been an active scene this morning. good morning. >> reporter: it has been an active scene. a sad story here. just south of the dupont circle here on connecticut avenue, the 1300 block. a very sad story from overnight. it was 1:30 this morning that d.c. police tell us there was a woman hit by an suv that kept on going. we're investigating a hit-and- run situation here and from what we understand, police are investigating a lexus suv, apparently at this point. a witness told me that it was a black suv, that came through here on connecticut avenue, hit the woman and then kept on going. now we understand that a bicyclist who was around here saw the accident happened, chased after the vehicle and got the tag numbers to help police track down that vehicle. and we do have some video that
7:05 am
came in a little while ago from where montgomery county police are helping out with this. this is the chevy chase area of montgomery county where police located the suspected vehicle in this hit-and-run. we understand that they are talking to somebody. they are questioning someone. we're not sure of any kind of arrest at this point though. we do know it was located at an underground parking garage at an apartment building again in the chevy chase area of montgomery county. now take a look at video from earlier to give you an idea. it was a black mercedes here on connecticut that was parked here and the young woman was getting out of the back passenger side of the car when this suv, according to witnesses, came through and hit her and kept on going. several witnesses were here at the time. in talking with them, from what i've been told, that she was down here celebrating a birthday perhaps. but sadly, again, steve and allison, we're hearing this
7:06 am
morning that the woman -- the victim in this hit-and-run did indeed pass away at the hospital this morning. the investigation does continue. officers are still here on the scene as they continue to gather more evidence for their investigation. back to you. >> sarah, thank you very much. allison? our other big story on this day, in 2001 american troops poured into afghanistan. it's a war without much fanfare but questions including how and when is the u.s. able to get out of the country. ainsley earhart looks at the beginning of our 10th year at war. >> reporter: more than 1200 americans dead. no end in sight. >> i'm not an optimist or a pessimist, i'm a realist and the reality of afghanistan is that it is all hard all of the time. >> reporter: that was in 2009.
7:07 am
administration argued that the war didn't begin in earnest until president obama took office. last year he pledged thousands more troops to the fight. >> as commander-in-chief i have determined that it is in our vital national interest to send an additional 30,000 troops to afghanistan. >> reporter: the president is still sticking with the july 2011 date of withdrawal, but that could change. >> with the standpoint of july 2011, the need to make progress by december and in that review, look at the strategy and really validate that it's the right strategy. >> reporter: last year the secretary of defense held a bleak view of what could happen if the u.s. strategy fails. >> failure in afghanistan would mean a taliban take over of much, if not most of the can'try and likely a renewed civil war. >> reporter: polls show most americans think the war was a bad idea, that the united states is not winning and that
7:08 am
it will probably get worse. the word on the street in kabul isn't much better. >> americans have their own policy. they've come here for their own interest in defending their own country. >> america and the united nations should take their forces out of afghanistan otherwise it is not possible to bring peace. >> reporter: deaths reached 531 in september. that surpasses the 514 americans killed in 2009. ainsley earhart, fox news. >> reports continue to swirl that the president of afghanistan is secretly meeting with taliban leaders to discuss an end to the war and we'll look at those claims in the next half hour. steve, over to you. less than four weeks until election day and president obama is hitting the campaign trail once again for democrats. this time in maryland. the president stumping for alley at bowie state university in prince george's county. it starts at 1:45 this

7:10 am
join the movement and spread the word. >> the board of elections said if fenty gets more write-in votes he could take the election even if gray is on the ballot. and vincent gray continues to make good on a campaign promise. he's gearing up for another town hall meeting today. he's be in ward 3. most did vote for fenty so the town hall could be more heating than the meeting at ward 5 this past tuesday. he campaigned on a plan to hold town halls in each ward in the city. police in fairfax county investigating the stabbing death of a woman last night in springfield. witnesses say a man got into a fight with the victim at the 5 t bar and grill and stabbed her to death. the victim is a 37-year-old woman. the police said the two did know each other. the suspect injured himself and was taken to the hospital with
7:11 am
nonlife-threatening injuries and is now in police custody. in prince george's county, the bomb squad gets in to diffuse pipe bombs. a real estate agent found pipe bombs. the bomb squad removed the items and bomb sniffing dogs searched the neighborhood and didn't find anything. 11 minutes past the hour on this thursday morning. >> that toxic sludge has reached the danu river and that mean it's could travel to other nations. we'll look more closely when we come back. and one of the most expensive colleges in the country right here in our area. stay with us. fox 5 morning news will be right back. blue diamond almonds!

7:17 am
a fairly quiet map. that low pressure area that's been impacting our weather is exiting the region. still though the rain showers across portions of the northeast and another system in the western states is producing cloud cover across the mountain states and some rain in western portions of nevada. here is a look at the five-day forecast. today is breezy, ms., highs of 73 degrees. yeah, tomorrow 75 and mostly sunny skies. and saturday, let's add on to that, warm 79 and sunny. sunday beautiful. monday ms. and 72, a holiday, column because day. that is a look at the weather. that's a nice looking weather. >> that's a little better. no fence, better than last week. >> i'm just telling you. i don't create it. julie wright, what is going on. she said she doesn't create any problems on the roads. she's just the messenger. >> that's when i'm not driving. >> that's true. >> all right.
7:18 am
well unfortunately we have our hands full this morning. two separate accidents on the beltway. the outer loop congested out of bethesda. inner loop slow out of silver spring northbound on 95. now the crew in sky fox with us once again. another crash in bethesda near 355 at commerce street near 410, receiving word of an accident possibly involving another pedestrian. maybe even a small child. so the information just coming in, but northbound 355, we do have the right side of the road blocked off as you continue out of bethesda in the direction of the capital beltway. not too much of a delay at this point past the scene. southbound 355, lanes are open from the beltway toward 410. so again near commerce street, accident investigation tieing up the right side of the road. now taking it inside, southbound 270 gridlocked out of germantown to falls road. still dealing with a crash in the left lane. this is the six-lane stretch at the lane divide where we have the other accident. that's moved over to the
7:19 am
shoulder. so gridlock traffic at father hurley toward the split. in virginia, southbound at 95 causing a backup from the beltway and that's clearing to the shoulder. northbound 95 delays through woodbridge and toward duke street. inner loop of the beltway at 66, we have a crash in the left lane. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. the toxic sludge that we've been talking about in hungary that burst from a containment pond could cause an eco logical disaster and spread through europe, but at this point officials don't think it will be that widespread. the chemicals already killed four people, including two children. 260million gallons of the sticky sludge surged out of the reservoir at an aluminum plant and investigators are opening a criminal probe into what has become hungarry's worst chemical spill. >> and other countries are now bracing for an even worst disaster. >> it's a disaster and it's very danger for the environment
7:20 am
and i'm hundreds of kilometer squares are polluted already. >> reporter: as hazmat crews swept through hungarran towns trying to clear homes and roads, environmentalists warned of an eco logical disaster in the making. >> we're concerned not just for the environment and hungary but this could cause more trouble. >> reporter: and the great concern is that the toxic sludge could flow downstream in the waters of the ban ube, the world's second largest river, into hungary and entering into the black sea. the hungarran national police chief has been handed the authority to lead a criminal investigation into how the leak from the sludge reservoir happened. and the hungarran government is working to shore up the walls of the reservoir and has posted
7:21 am
guards to watch for further leaks. from the words of another official, if another leak happens, they will sound all possible sirens to make sure people can run to safety. the words that they can run to safety, unlikely to bring comfort with the government accused of being unprepared for this disaster which could end up poisoning the food supply chain for millions of europeans. jonathan hunt, fox news. and we are getting word that sludge has already reached the western branch of the danube river. >> hungarian officials have been adding chemical disburse ants to stop it and said there is no damage to the danube so far. and for months we dealt with the bp oil spill. >> now the preliminary report from the president's commission is out and the white house takes quite a hit. that's coming up next. stay with us.

two governors, two different approaches. even in good times bob ehrlich didn't make education a priority. he increased college tuition by 40%, cut school construction by $200 million, and ehrlich voted to eliminate the department of education while serving in congress. but in the toughest of times, martin o'malley has made record investments in public schools, new school construction,
7:24 am
and o'malley froze college tuition four years in a row. with martin o'malley, our children always come first.
7:25 am
7:24 right now as we update the oil spill in the gulf. according to the national oil spill commission, the white house withhold important information about the spill. sources say in the spring federal scientists asked to make the public the worst case discharge but administration didn't allow that. the government said the well was released 210,000 gallons per day but at the time 210 million gallons were leaking. did banks act too fast when foreclosures on tens of thousands of homes. there may be an investigation into faulty legal documents. three banks have halted foreclosures in 23 states after evidence surfaced employees or outside lawyers signed documents without reading them or filed inaccurate paperwork. the afl/cio wants action taken.
7:26 am
eleanor holmes norton is also asking for a 90 day moratorium on foreclosures in the city. she said part of the problem is that people who are afraid of losing homes are asking for help, but she does not believe the banks are stepping up. delegate norton claims they tell homeowners they have to be three months behind on payment before they will do anything. >> we call in and they say we can't talk to you. we talk to other people and they just keep bouncing you around from phone to phone. >> i think they're going to listen because we're going to shame them. >> in 23 states a court order is needed to enforce that moratorium. it's not the case in the district though. we should mention that elijah cummings also asking for a 60 day more for yum on foreclosures in the state of maryland. who is the most powerful woman in the world? there is a clue. she's here in the nation's capital. we'll give you the answer

7:30 am
it is now about 7:30. let's look at stories making headlines. secretary of state hillary clinton is responding to reports that she could possibly take over joe biden's position as vice president in 2012. author and veteran reporter bob woodward believes president obama would get more votes from women, latinos and retirees in the next election. secretary clinton fared well in those demographics during the primary. the white house is denying any change of role is in the works. the president hits the stumping tour in maryland today. president holding a rally with
7:31 am
alley today in prince george's county. recent polls in maryland have o'malley leading bob ehrlich at this point. forbes is out with the 2010 list of the world's most powerful women. first lady michelle obama has earned the top spot. and also on the list oprah win free and lady gaga and beyonce. hillary clinton and ellen degeneres also cracked the top 10. forbes said the magazine focused on entrepreneurship and influence on the world. >> you wonder what the criteria is. >> but that makes perfect sense. >> what you are basing it on, sure. we are basing our focus on a great forecast. and we got it. you're delivering, tony. we like it. >> we're in october now. a string of very nice days after what has been a string of -- not the best weather we can
7:32 am
see here. it starts today. starting with the temperatures across the region where right now in washington we've dropped down to 51. 51 degrees in the district, 51 in quantico. gaithersburg is at 52 degrees. it is still cool. 45 degrees in manassas. 49 at dulles airport. culpeper is at 48 degrees. annapolis is at 53 degrees at this hour. here is the temperature trend map where we're going to see the temperatures head for the next couple of days. instead of being 10-15 degrees below normal, which is what we've been, we're going to be above normal starting today. our average high for this date is 71 degrees. we expect to go to 73 today. sunshine all of these days. we're starting out with cloud this is morning and seeing more sun as the day progresses. tomorrow 75 and saturday nearly 80 degrees. and then on sunday a fine day for the redskins to play out at fedex field. let's take a look at the winds. they are not particularly significant now. but it's going to be breezy during the course of the day
7:33 am
today i think. in fact i think winds could become gusty at times, maybe up to 20-25, possibly 30 miles per hour. right now winds are blowing at 8 miles per hour across the region. satellite radar, changes in the forecast. this is why. an area of low pressure that's been impacting our weather for the last several days continues to push off to the north and east. we do have the clouds over us. they're going to pull away. and we do have the winds as the low departs. that's why i think the winds will pick up. high pressure will build in and calm things down and give us a very pleasant several days. so today becoming mostly sunny. it's not right now but will become mostly sunny. breezy at times and 73 for the high. five-day forecast, i showed it to you. fine conditions for the next -- in fact beyond fine. very nice conditions for the next several days, quiet weather except for the breeziness today and temperatures in the 70s. that's a look at what is happening with the forecast. now let's go to julie wright and get an update on traffic. >> i came up just short on the
7:34 am
most powerful women of 2010. >> we checked and you were number 23, so that's not bad. >> so i did make the list. >> yeah. >> if i didn't make that list, you all know who not to call next time you get lost. why am i stuck on the beltway? there's a fee for that. outer loop below speed leaving 95 past new hampshire avenue toward connecticut avenue. earlier incident there has cleared. the inner loop cleared out and the pace improving back toward 95 college park. bw parkway slow between 198 and 197 and 410 out of riverdale into northeast. germantown to falls road where the left lane is blocked. traveling the inner loop of the beltway, delays leaving annandale toward 66. the crash is in the left lane. 66 still below speed out of pass and then again 7100 to 123 and nutley street to the beltway. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. on this day in 2001, american trooped pours into afghanistan. since then the u.s. strategy
7:35 am
has shift a number of times. today with more american trooped in place, many believe we're at a critical cross roads in determining if the president's revised war strategy will work, public support for the war is slipping here in the u.s. and across europe. netherlands were the first to pull out. canadians say they are next. and now we hear representatives of the taliban are meeting with the government of afghanistan to negotiate. they have contended no peace talks would take place unless all sources left the country but they may begin talks in exchange for being granted an official presence if the afghanistan government. joining us now is jy green. how preliminary is preliminary for these talks? >> these talks have been going on since last year.
7:36 am
there was a huge meeting in january in the maltice where they participated in this, with the saudis and there was taliban representation there. so it's been going on for a while, but the real question is at what level? i think the folks that are now beginning to get involved in this, are looking at that july 2011 removal or beginning by the u.s. to remove forces from the region and they are also looking at the fact that today is the 10th anniversary of this war. so i think more is at stake and more high profile people are getting involved. but it's not a new phenomenon. >> is it because the taliban had long said they won't do any negotiating until the foreigners leave. and do you think it's because of that they're willing to talk? >> that's one factor.
7:37 am
and the taliban is not in the business that you can just retire from. they've conducted some nasty terror attacks and done some pretty horrible things to women in afghanistan. and so they can't really just change their stripes overnight. but i think what is recognized by the organization is they need some options because there is no way that they can deal with the fire power that nato, led by the u.s., brings to that region. and they are also really upset about the fact that al-qaeda continues to cause problems for them. they made a deal with al-qaeda, and this is part of a long- standing tradition, if you come asking me for help, i will help you and i won't turn my back on you. but al-qaeda is a house guest they would like to go away. but in the meantime they have to do something for themselves looking down the road because it's not going to get easier
7:38 am
for the taliban. >> and can an afghan government work with this taliban representation? >> it could. but one thing that has to be taken into consideration is how serious is the taliban about this? are they interested in power sharing? would it be a power sharing kind of situation? and what would the people get out of this. how would people react? because the taliban has significant support in the region, but a large part of the reason why they have that support is because people are coerced into doing it. they are doing it because the taliban comes to their homes in the middle of the night saying if you don't support us we're going to kill you or your family. so the question is once the taliban surfaces as this parties that sort of negotiating its way out of this tight spot, how are people going to think about them and what kind of power they have at that point? >> and how is it going to him pact us here in the u.s., whether it be our troops overseas or the reaction here at home. >> well i can tell you, nothing
7:39 am
is going to happen in terms of removal of the u.s. troops unless certain conditions are met. it's going to be a conditions- based situation. in talking with some of the military leaders over the last year or so, they've made it very clear, if it looks like that ungoverned space is still as permissive an environment now as it was then, then you won't see the u.s. vacating that area because if there is a big threat still hanging out there that will come from afghanistan, u.s. forces will most likely stay there until the threat goes away. >> jj green, national security correspondent, thank you for coming in. don't expect too many details from this point and they want to keep that secret as possible. but we'll stay on top of it and bring you more information as
7:40 am
we hear it. 7:39 right now. 51 degrees on this thursday morning. bad news for the burgundy and gold star clinton portis. he's sitting on the side lines for the next few weeks at least. coach shanahan's reaction when we come back. and then the party crashers have filed for bankruptcy and selling autographs to pay off some debts. find out how that is going for the couple. that's next on fox 5 morning news. kiththiosa

looking at stories making headlines this thursday morning. the government has supported a record amount of illegal immigrants this year. janet napolitano said of the 393,000 deported, half had committed a crime. critics say more still has to be done to secure the border and claim many illegal aliens turn around and come back into the u.s. suburbs taking a hit during
7:44 am
the economic downturn. the nonprofit booking institute reports that the number of those with low income is the highest in half a century. how much would you pay for a signed photo of the so-called white house party crashers, the salahis? not much according to an online sale they featured. they posted memorabilia on the internet to help pay off one of the many reported debts but after two weeks on the market, two only out of about 200 available pictures sold. and that's after the $100 price tag was cut in half. >> i was going to say, there is something out there that would buy it. there is a market for everything. and there was somebody and somebody else that were the two that bought them. >> okay. anyhoo, i don't think there is much to say. it's kind of sad, actually. >> no. let's talk about the weather and what a gorgeous
7:45 am
week it is. >> it is going to be fantastic for the next few days. let's look at the current temperatures around the region. here in washington, d.c. we are at 51 degrees. not bad at all. let's check out elsewhere in the mid-atlantic. 58 degrees in roanoke. norfolk, virginia, is at 53. new york city is at 55. pittsburgh, p.a., 49 degrees at this hour. here is a surface map. we haven't shown you one of these for a little while. i'll show you what is happening today. sunny skies, boys and girls. very nice. that area of low pressure, say bye-bye. it's pushing off to the north and east, taking with it the rain that we've had and the cool conditions. high pressure is moving in. that high pressure says i'm going to stick around for a few days. i kind of like it here and we like it to be here. here is your five-day forecast. high today about 73 degrees. skies becoming mostly sunny. we'll be breezy today. be a -- aware of that. and a nice way to end the

workweek. saturday fantastic if you are going to be outside. warm and 79 degrees. sunny on sunday. fantastic, it will be beautiful at 76 degrees. and on monday, that's a holiday so kids are out of school, i believe it will be a good day. >> got the whole government off on monday too. >> wow. >> it should be nice. julie wright, i'm assuming you'll be here with us on monday. >> really? why would you assume that? isn't there a sale at boomy's on monday? >> you'll be here. >> outer loop still a tough go from 95 to georgia at 270. believe it or not, wreck still there at falls lane and big delays in rockville. across the american legion bridge, no tieuped to report. inner loop looks good leaving tysons. 29 at dale drive checking for
7:47 am

8:16 am
>> first let's talk about your association with the product with high fructose corn syrup. >> well it is a sugar made from corn. it's grown here in the united states, made here in the united states and it's in many of our foods and beverages because of the functional benefits it provides. for example, when you walk down the grocery store aisle and you see spaghetti sauce, it's in that and yogurt because it keeps the fruit flavor evenly mixed and in jams and jellies because it brings out fruit flavor and in sauces and marinades because it brings out the spice flavors. and that sweetener in those foods is low in fructose. contrary to what its name suggests. it got it's name because it's higher in fructose than corn syrup. it turns out it's rather confusing to consumers and today consumers want to know
8:17 am
what is in their food, where the foods come from and importantly how to read ingredient labels on food and beaverrages. >> so you petitions the fda to make this name change. where does this stand right now and why is this name better as far as clearing up the confusion? >> well when the name is corn sugar, the consumers understand that it has the same calories of table sugar is equally sweet and has the name number of fructose and that's important because as people are trying to equate calories in and calories out, it is impossible if they don't get that right, which is calories. so by changing it to corn sugar or an alternate name, it helps dieters recognize added sugars
8:18 am
in the diet. today there are many names. evap ate or aided cane, and juice is syrup. there is no apple or grape or pear, there is no vitamins or minerals. whether it's corn shug orar cane sugar, your body can't tell the difference. >> there is a saying that it leads to obesity which leads to other illnesses down the road that they have associated it with obesity and the body processes this differently than regular sugar. what is it your opinion of that. >> none of that was about high fructose corn syrup in the first place. there have about many searchers that have taken high fructose , and by the way it is found in fruits and vegetables, and some researchers have taken pure
8:19 am
fructose and given a massive amount to rats, 60% of their caloric intake and nobody lives that way unless you live in a laboratory. and sugars, when they are consumed, two simple sugars fructose and sugar together, the body can't tell the difference and that was confirmed by the american medical association, the american diet association and many of the nation's leading health and nutrition experts. >> why do you think it gets the rap it does? >> well they don't know about it because they assume it's high in fructose. >> and you can see the high fructose corn searup? >> it is causing the problem. when the american diet association definition was presented to them, they were confused. and that's because they are looking for something high in
8:20 am
fructose. this is not high in fructose. the version used in many foods on gressry store shelves is low in fract os and it's there because it provides attributes that table sugar did cannot provide and at an affordable price. we are fortunate to have so many choices and to have them be safe and affordable and that's unique throughout the world. and that's brought on in part by the corn industry. >> got to end it there. but would consumers be safe to say then the product will change to corn sugar on our levels. >> that's up to the fda and to learn more please visit corn --searup.com. >> thank you very much. and one list of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the country but that might not be

still seeing deck laids later. what is your hope for those doing this for the first time? >> this is what drove me through the restoration, is that people will not only be reminded of the history, but they will understand that there is a tremendous res onance for anyone stopping these kinds of crimes from occurring and who is interested. in an international criminal justice, which has become a very, very important area of the law and we're using it to try to help nations get along with each other better and stop of the killing that is going on for racial, ethnic or economic reasons around the world. >> that is so true. and it's such a fascinating project -- sandra, and we're glad to talk to you. we'll put some information on
