7:12 am
we'll start our tour of wicked weather down in texas. how many of these have we seen caught on tape. this tornado ripped through parts of texas and ripped up a high school football field. bleachers all ripped up and several homes and an elementary school damaged and vehicles caught out on the highway. still unclear how many people were hurt. that was down in texas. >> oh, man. honestly, if i never through one of those, it will be okay. >> not a bad thing to miss. around here, what a beautiful weekend. yesterday trees are doing their thing, nice red and gold out there. today more clouds in the forecast but still mild with temperatures back in the low to
7:13 am
mid-70s. maybe some scattered showers and thunderstorms later today. so bring along an umbrella just in case. and we'll start with hd radar and showers out to the west. periods of sunshine this morning but with sure activity pressing into west virginia we'll see if it doesn't move in here during the course of the afternoon. so the blinking on the radar is indicating good thunderstorm activity. they have thunderstorm watches for carolina and eastern tennessee. we'll switch gears and look at national map. we mentioned the tornado yesterday in texas. the other big story is a huge storm into the cascades, in oregon and washington. and you can see the mess pushing toward denver. here in the washington area, a great one yesterday. you can see off to the south and west, i just showed you the shower activity headed in our direction and we'll be in for a so-so day. temperatures still warm but we have an increasing chance of showers and thunderstorms. let's do temperatures.
7:14 am
61 in washington. nice, mild start. plenty of warm air to the south. atlanta is 68 degrees. we're once again in the 70s here. salt lake city, 34. that is chilly. in portland, eugene is 49 as well. and temperatures in low to mid- 70s feeling great. a lot of possibilities of showers into the nighttime and then mostly cloudy day tomorrow. if you want warm stuff, wait until wednesday. we'll be near 80 and then a gradual cooldown. friday and saturday highs in the low 60s. in fact by saturday and by halloween we could be in the upper 50s. >> i was going to ask you about that sunday forecast. >> right now it looks fine. >> a little bit of everything in there. let's check in with julie wright and look at traffic. >> steve, i'm already planning, i have something on wednesday, where i can't be here. >> wednesday is a pretty day so far. lanes are open traveling on the top side of the outer loop
7:15 am
leaving 95 to georgia with all lanes open. southbound 270, slowing after the exit for father hurley and montrose toward the split. all lanes open southbound on 29 and the pace is slow at four corners. 95 below speed across the occuquan and slow leaving lorton and from the 395 to seminary before the pace improved. eastbound 66 disabled tractor- trailer cleared but look for delays leaving vienna. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. another big story we're following this morning, a massive cholera outbreak in haiti months after an earthquake devastated that company. 3,000 people have been infected. it's an intestinal infection by ingested food and water with a bacteria. so far more than 250 people
7:16 am
have died. for a better perspective of how bad things are in haiti we're joined by lisa lawman from save the children. lisa, good morning to you. >> good morning. >> tell us what cholera is. it sounds like an illness that we don't hear a lot about any more? >> well and you're exactly right. it's a bacterial disease. it's transmitted through water. you can get it through your food. and it has a very, very strong effect on the body. so some symptoms are strong diarrhea, vomiting. and some people can carry it with no results and others are effected and in extreme cases some can die in three hours and even less with they are children. >> and we see a makeshift clis happening this in the cup --
7:17 am
happening there in the country? >> people are being advised to seek treatment if they can if they are experiencing symptoms and while they are doing that to start hydration. so for them to drink clean water, use oral hydration and get to help where they can get tested as quickly as possible. so we're expecting to see a larger number of people going to clinics as the message is they need to be suspicious of diarrhea. it is common here. parents see it all of the time and experience it frequently themselves. so if they are experiencing diarrhea, start hydrating and get to a clinic if your symptoms persist. >> and it looks like camps there, some of the 1.3 million survivors there because they are homeless now because of the devastating earthquake. these conditions, it's almost
7:18 am
like the perfect storm for an illness like cholera. am i right in that? >> that's true. conditions are crowded in the camps. they are not very sanitary and hygiene and sanitation is hard in this situation. so there are steps being taken to make sure there is a clean water to the camps and to establish steps for waste removal and control so that those cannot be vectors for the spread of the disease. >> with the moments that we have last, is there anything that we can do watching? it's almost like preaching to the choir talking about what they are going through but is there anything we can do to help? >> i think it's important for everyone to remember that people of haiti continue to need their support, that the recovery of haiti from the earthquake and from the situation now is not something that is a short-term thing. it will require a lot of support from around the world over a long period of time.
7:19 am
as we think about having to recover from the catastrophes, we have to remember that helping the country to build in stronger systems, health care and support for children, that's the foundation on which haiti's future will be built. so while we respond urgently to emergencies, we need to continue to reinvest for the longer term. >> the video or pictures we're seeing from port-au-prince, the capital there, what is going on in the rural areas, lisa? >> the rural areas pose different challenges. in urban areas you have crowding and high potential of disease transmission from person to person quickly through waste and carrying of water and things like that as people are consuming it. in rural areas people are spread out so the challenges there are ensuring people have access to safe and clean water and access to health care when they need it. our understanding is that the government is engaging in a
7:20 am
large messaging campaign. the members of the humanitarian community are participating in this. we're sharing the same messages, drink clean water, eat cooked food, wash your hands after going to the bathroom and frequently during the day and seek help if you need it. >> lisa lawman is from save the children. thank you for taking some time out, lisa. >> my pleasure. thank you. well it's 7:20 right now. switching gears, brett favre has been relatively quiet about a scandalous investigation he's in the middle of. now the vikings quarterback is opening up. what he is saying about the voice mail that he's accused of leaving a female employee. and plus it's the end of an era.

7:30 am
should be a decent day today. temperature wise back in the 70s but the clouds there off to east and we have plenty more clouds off to the west. so when all is said and done it will be mostly cloudy with the possibility of scattered showers and thunderstorms. let's get started with a look at yesterday's high temperatures. what a gorgeous day. 73 degrees yesterday at reagan national. dulles is 75. bwi marshall is 75 degrees. i mention the temperatures because once again today -- here is the good news in the forecast, the next couple of days we'll keep temperatures in the 70s. pushing 80 around here by wednesday. but unfortunately more clouds in the forecast today as we have an increasing chance to see widely scattered showers during the course of the afternoon. let's see what we can find as far as the map goes. and temperatures across the region, and we are currently in the 60s. currently 63 degrees at reagan national. and 50s off to the north and we
7:31 am
have. that's the case for the next hour or two. and then we'll watch the temperatures quickly jump as our winds will be out of the south and the southwest over the next couple of hours. so we'll continue to monitor that. if we can go to hd radar, i want to show you the shower activity to the south and west. that's moving in here later today so the possibility of widely scattered showers and thunderstorms. back to our max system and if we can, let's tack a look at temperatures. 61 degrees at reagan national. 60 in quantico. 61 in fredericksberg. the 50s off to the north and west. 58 in hagerstown. and high temperature today in the low 70s. to 72 and 73 with scattered showers and thunderstorms. best time for showers is later in afternoon. that's a look at the forecast. our five-day forecast featuring temperatures in the upper 70s, near 80 by wednesday. let's get to traffic now and if
7:32 am
we could let's find julie wright. all right, tucker, on the roads this morning, lanes are open leaving college park toward 270. southbound along 29 leaving randolph and southbound leaving 650 new hampshire avenue, lanes open below speed traveling from white oak toward four corners. nothing stopped along your way. 270 clear south of 109 and slow at montrose toward the split. outer loop of the beltway checking for a crash near 210. traveling 395, we have delays that extend before the springfield interchange crossing over the bridge but nothing stopped along the way. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. checking out our top story this morning, the chandra levy murder trial begins today. what you are looking at is a live look from d.c. superior court in northwest where opening statements are set to get underway at 10:00 this
7:33 am
morning. ingmar guandique is charged with the sexual assault and murder of levy in 2001. former california congressman gary condit with whom levy was romantically linked believes he will be called to testify. paul wagner will follow this case from inside the courtroom and join us live coming up in about half an hour. the election day now one week from tomorrow and some incumbents in the tightest races of their careers. joining us, bob cusak from the hill. and the question is are people going to get out to the polls. and one recent study said the young vote may not be there as much as what we saw two years ago. the know the democrats are counting on that to hold on to the seats. >> the president wanted the young voters, the hispanic voters but they won't be out
7:34 am
there as much as in 2008. he knows that. but he needs enough of them out there so he can retain at least one chamber of congress and that will be tough. and the senate will be tough for republicans to grab but the house is looked to favor to win the house. >> and what happened if that plays out what, will we see for the next couple of years if you see republicans until the house and democrats if the senate. >> there are some things they could disagree on, like trade issues. but some of the republicans are tea party candidates and they are not chamber of commerce or business-friendly. and these guys may not go for a compromise with the president whether it be on trade or anything else. >> before we talk about congress in detail, let's look at one race, the maryland governor's race and we had both
7:35 am
candidates in here for a debate. we saw one report saying one thing and another report saying another thing. what do you think? >> if the wave is very big, bob ehrlich will win. >> let's talk about races involving congress and we'll throw a couple out there and you can fill me in with other ones you think are important. and let's talk about harry reid and what is happening in nevada? >> harry reids people are nervous. they could easily portray sharron angle as extreme. and they had a debate and reid did not do well and he has the own us -- the onus on him to
7:36 am
win that debate. and so some think there is a race between senator shoeman. >> and o'donnell is in line for a book deal, so what is happening there. >> the wave is going to have to be eform us for -- enormous for her to win. >> and what other states or races really jump out as critical. >> i think the big one is in california, senator barbara boxer. as election night goes on we could be looking at that race as deciding who will control the senate. carly fiorina has run a good campaign. and can republicans win in the blue state of california? that race is neck and neck. that will be a huge race. >> and would that depend on the governor's race as well and the
7:37 am
polling going on because you probably have more congressional seats up than anywhere else in the country. >> i think you'll see republicans win the senate or house but not both. >> and not business friendly when you mentioned the chamber giving it's backing. what might we see? the tea party candidates got a lot of attention a few months ago. and when it comes to election day a week from tomorrow, will we see the influence come through? >> i think we will. tea party candidates have knocked oven trenched republicans from the party but can they win november 2nd? they are not all going to win. but some people think the tea party will go away. there is no chance until after the 2012 election because the move will be strong and a lot
7:38 am
of them want to oust president obama. >> and how do we get the tea party involved in that? >> we have some people that want to compromise. when you had president clinton with a republican congress, they got things done. but will that happen now? i think that's unlikely. >> we'll see you again soon. as we count down the days to the november 2nd election, so remember you can get the polls and follow the races bob was talking about under the politics tab at myfoxdc.com. coming up next, we have seven games now on the book and the redskins have matched their win total from last season. it was an ugly one but a win is a win. we'll break down the monday morning quarterback when we

7:43 am
of hours ago. four in the second half. this was not a blowout or just throw it up there and go get them hail marys. >> and nobody wanted to score. because every time they got near the goal line -- >> it was the worst offensive second half or two teams ever. seven points scored here by deangelo hall, the 94-yarder he takes back. and he's the guy that said put the x on my chest. i'm the guy. i'm the guy saying i want to cover the best receiver. you could say whatever you want about me, i'm going to talk. i'm going to have an issue with jim haslett and let him know in the meeting. >> here is what i have to say -- about that. and i love deangelo hall. after he said put your best guy on me and he got burned. so spread him out over a couple of games. don't take them all in one game. >> they needed all four yesterday or they wouldn't have won. >> they would have.
7:44 am
>> and i do like the moxie that he shows. and you can say we don't like them running their yap. i have no problem when you back tup. and he'll get burned but your best guys will get burned because they are covering the best receiver. after the game we want to hear from shanahan and deangelo hall on yesterday's win. >> we're make something strides, that's for sure. like we said, we want to get better each week and we've been talking about the defense and a lot of question marks from different people and all of a sudden you see five turnovers and a number of sacks and guys playing extremely well. >> we've on the verge of being a great team. we still have a lot of things to work on, almost every week. but we'll keep working. coach shanahan demands the best out of all of us.
7:45 am
>> and i heard you snicker when deangelo hall was speaking. and when you get six turnovers you have a chance to be a good defensive team. they have not been very good defensive for this year but yesterday they stood up. and we'll talk more about this next hour but the defense has been responsible for all four wins. so tucker barnes, take that. >> and at 4-3, they're on the verge of being a good team. >> no, he said a great team. >> take it game by gay. >> but play. >> our coverage continues on air and online on the sports tab on myfoxdc.com. the only reason dave ross can say that is if dallas wins, the redskins are in first place. >> one week only. it's a special. >> why did you snicker? because i'm going to say this.
