afternoon. there is your satellite radar. you can see the cloud cover not too far away. so after a little sunshine for the next hour or two and we'll see if the showers in west virginia and portions of eastern kentucky don't get in here later today. good news is the temperatures are mild all night. 61 at reagan national. 63 in ocean city. and down at patuxent naval air station. and 62 in fredericksberg. our forecast not bad. 72 degrees and mostly cloudy mild and i mentioned the possibility that some of the showers to the west could get in here. could be a thunderstorm with winds out of the south at 10-15 miles per hour. more details on the forecast. it will be mild all week long. if not warm toward the middle of the week. i'll have those details coming up. back to you downstairs. our top story this morning, we're just about an hour away from the beginning of the murder trial that has been nine years in the making and grabbed national attention. here is a live look outside of the courthouse this morning

where the chandra levy murder trial will begin with the hour. opening statements set to get underway at 10:00. ingmar guandique is charged with the attempted sexual assault and murder of levy back in may of 2001. she disappeared after going for a jog in rock creek park. her remains found there a year later. the trial is expected to last about one month. the levy case erupted into a major scandal it was learned that levy was romantically linked to gary condit. police don't believe condit has anything to do with the case. but still condit has said he is expected to testify during the trial. and another court appearance. and this one from students from georgetown university. >> sarah simons is live now for us throughout the morn at georgetown and she joins us with the details. >> reporter: good morning,

gurvir and allison. the students are expected to be in court later today. both students at georgetown university and another man who was visited here at the university. they are accused of manufacturing the drug called dmt inside of a dorm room here on campus. now this happened early saturday morning. over the weekend campus police got a call from someone who said there was a strange smell coming from inside one of the dorm rooms. when investigators got here they say police found hot plates and several chemicals and even a air ventilation system on the 9th floor of harvin hall. officials thought they were dealing with a meth lab and that's why students were ordered to evacuate but once they got inside they were able to do tests and reveal it was not meth but a dangerous

hallucinogenic called dmp. students here are surprised to hear about this going on on campus. >> i don't think anyone has really heard of dmt. and even when it was thought of a meth lab, everyone couldn't believe it was a freshman dorm and within a month of coming to campus. >> anyplace you have something like this, it's concerning to us but people are capable of doing anything. but it is something definitely on our radar and it's a big problem. >> reporter: and at this point investigators say it's not certain how long the lab could have been operating here on campus or whether or not students were even buying it here. live at georgetown university. sarah simmons, back to you. the first war crimes trial under president obama is scheduled to get underway this morning but lawyers for the defendant are hoping for a plea

deal at the guantanamo bay holding in cuba. he was held since 15. he's accused of killing an american soldier with a hand grenade in 2002. a judge is now holding a hearing in this case. now to the race of governor in maryland. alley with a big lead ahead offer lick -- bob ehrlich. and you can see the interviews with both of the candidates at myfoxdc.com. and bob ehrlich has tried to fight his way back to annapolis and he's getting help from rudy giuliani. >> i'm more excited about this election than any other because i thought the result four years ago was very unfair because, as i said, 60% approval rating, the best governor in the

country, no doubt about it. >> reporter: bob ehrlich endorsed rudy giuliani in his campaign. and president obama is back on the campaign trail today. the one-third of voters may still be up for grabs. doug luzader has more from capitol hill. >> reporter: republicans are shown to still have an edge but it's close and that means the president will once again be hitting the road. as it does just about every week, the president's motorcade headed to the gulf court but this will probably be the last outing before the real score card comes in next week. >> you have to say yes we can. >> reporter: just as the republican party chairman predicted that the early voting is helping democrats and they will hold on to the house. >> from this point forward it's all about turnout and ground game and we're seeing good early voting trends and we have work to do but we think we can do it. >> reporter: republicans with a

bold prediction that they'll take both houses of congress. >> the senate is tougher but i think we'll be there. if this continues, i think you could see the senate as well. >> reporter: it is possible but still a long shot. >> so the entire playing field is among the 19 democratic seats up for grabs. but remember republicans have to take of them. it is really tough to win ten new seats in one year. >> reporter: difficult but not impossible. meaning the president may have to forego golf next weekend to scare up some final votes. and he won't be alone. both the vice president and the first lady are crisscrossing its country in the final days. doug luzader, fox news. is there is a growing disaster looming in haiti. a deadly cholera outbreak in port-au-prince. they are trying to stop it from

spreading to the camps that hold earthquake victims. the want earal infection is -- the infection is transmitted through contaminated water. this weekend a sport claimed the life of fran crippen. he died as he was coming into the end of a world cup race and now there are questions about the conditions he was competing under. will thomas explained. >> reporter: fran crippen's death is sending shock waves through the world of swimmer. he died while competing for the united states in an open water 10-kilometer 10 cup race in the united arab emirates. he started the race but never did finish. >> the swimmers were looking out -- >> reporter: they would find his body in the water short of

the final buoy. there were complaints that the water was too warm. it is said he likely died from overexertion. >> there were signs of drowning. >> reporter: officials say the water temperature was 84 degrees and the 10-k race only has minimum requirements. sometimes athletes push their bodies to the limit. >> come bypasses with potential hydration -- there could be a potential hydration problem. >> reporter: he comes from a family of successful swimmers. he won three u.s. national titles in his career. witnesses say it was an emotional scene. >> people were consoling each other and hugging each other. >> will thomas reporting there. three other swimmers were also taken to the hospital. they are expected to be released today. the rules for the competition do not limit how warm the water

is allowed to be. and now to the latest on the wiki leaks documents. the release this week is the biggest. almost five times bigger than the documents released in july. the new classified files show 60,000 more iraqi deaths than first thought. and some iraqi soldiers killed and tortured detainees. some may have been compromised in the latest release. >> what we're more concerned about here is not intelligence but harm coming to our forces and those fighting with us. because it shows how we operate in the field and how we respond after we attack, the capabilities of our equipment and things that our enemy could use against us. >> nouri al-maliki is calling a plat to undermine his bid -- a

a few local gun stores are responsible for selling most of the firearms used in crimes in our area. that's a finding of an investigation by the washington post they found 1% of dealers were responsible for two-thirds of guns sold in virginia since 1998. many of those 40 dealers received warnings their licenses were in jeopardy, only four had licenses revokes. another top d.c. official is leaving with mayor fenty. fire chief dennis rubin plans to leave in january and that's when mayor gray is expected to take over. rubin plans to teach and do

consulting work. early they are month michelle rhee said she was stepping down by the end of the month. a former white house insider out with a new book. it's not a tell-all about her life in the george w. bush white house or on the campaign trail with john mccain or palin. and this is a novel about the first female president. and she's getting plenty of attention for the seeming parallels between fact and fiction and nicole wallace joins us now. hello. >> thank you for having me. >> you're back in town for a big book signing. >> i am. tonight at border's at baileys cross roads. and it's nice to be home. this is my home for years. and i said i miss d.c. every morning i live in new york. >> and you are a true washington insider so when you make these memorable

characters, that seems like sarah palin and that could be karl rove, any truth to that, that these were drawn on people you know here in washington? >> what is real is the place. and i tried to get the place perfectly correct. i think when you live in washington, you know what is real and what is not. and if you get any of the details wrong, people call you out and their tough critics in washington, d.c. but the story is fictional and the characters are fictional but i was deeply effected by what i saw hillary clinton and sarah palin go through in 2008. so there are things that ring true about either of their experiences, that was certainly part of what i wanted to play with, was change. >> and the heroin of the book has a husband that goes outside of the marriage and deals with that with dignity and some say that sounds like hillary clinton. >> her quiet strength as not

just a candidate and secretary of state, but go back to what she had to endure in her personal life during bill clinton's presidency. it always stayed with me. i was if my early 20s at the time and just starting out in politics but i still remember her -- i remember the clintons going off to camp david and they had the cute chocolate lab and the monica lewin ski thing was coming out. and i think it's uniquely feminine, our ability to put on a strong front and do a good job at work and keep the family together all while keeping some of the turmoil under wraps, i think that is uniquely feminine. >> and some of the things the president deals with in the book, she's dealing with being a mom and a wife and also some detrayal in her own cabinet and she ras to run the free world.

>> i wanted to capture not just the chaos of all of the world's problems ending up on your doorstep, but the volume. for the white house staff, for this obama white house, the volume is crushing. it's a work load under which you can't hold all of that up forever and i think that's why you see in the obama white house a little bit of turnover at the two-year mark. it's a miracle people last that long. the work load is so intense. and i wanted to capture that life. and it's also magestic. and after one of the persons in the book was still amazed when the gates would swing open when you show your badge. and i was amazed by that. you're going to let me drive in? i'm nobody. so the wonder and the majesty of that place, it becomes like

a character in its own right because it becomes this big figure and presence in your life when you have the privilege of working there. >> and what is interesting is how one finds the balance. and you are right, for a woman there are other things weighing on you. you want to be at the parent conference. >> i think we're all victims of this having-it-all generation. we grew up standing on the shoulders of the women that came before us thinking we could have it all and with it the pressure to do it all and be it all and you don't have to be the president and other main characters but in any profession women have the goal to be everything they can be at home and in their personal life and that can be just as crushing as a white house work load. >> and you have a work load scheduled for next year.

and in the post you talked about we may be further away from electing a moderate than elected a women, talking about the similarities between palin and the others. and so i will ask you the mid terms coming up, do you think we could expect a turn over and loss of power from the democrats? >> i think it's pretty likely that republicans will take control of the house and i think there's a silver lining for president obama. i think presidents have done much better because it forces them to moderate their agenda if they have a congress controlled by the other party. so this idea of resurgence of politics and then moderating positions so we could have some compromises, it's something that appeals to be tremendously. >> not such a bad thing. nicole wall has has the book out called 18 acres and the

new this morning, a tragic story out of france a family of 11 jumped out of an apartment window after claiming to have seen the devil. several family members were hospitalized. a 4-month-old baby did not survive the fall. officials believe they were involved in voodoo. thousands of people living near a mountain in indonesia are being forced from their homes as the volcano continues to spew smoke and ashes. officials warn the country's most volatile volcano could erupt at any time. the mountain has seen increased

activity over the weekend. prompting officials to raise levels to code red. an environmental group wants the ban on off shore drilling back on the books. they want a judge to reinstate the moratorium imposed following the gulf oil spill. they say they have not finished analysis. but there are new rules to make drilling safer. finding a good deal on a plane ticket was easy when things tanked. more on the effect the airline industry is having on customers. and it wasn't pretty but it was another win for the redskins. coming up next mcnabb and the burgundy and gold had just enough to beat the bears and what a game deangelo hall had. we'll have monday morning quarterback when we return. with yoplait delights, now you can finally have both. ♪

home. in western virginia and eastern kentucky we have showers and thunderstorms. this is a severe storm watch box. we'll see if those storms don't make it into the washington area later today. but we still have several more hours of dry weather before the showers arrive later this afternoon. so let's push on to satellite radar. and here is a little sunshine out there as well. so it will be kind of a mix of sun and clouds to start the day and in the afternoon the clouds went out and we'll see the showers still move in. if you want to time the showers, any time after 2:00 this afternoon we'll see some widely scattered showers so the commute might be on the wet side. out to the west, a cold front toward chicago. and that will come through on tuesday night and wednesday. but in front of that, temperatures mild the next couple of days and unseasonably warm with temperatures in the 70s and close to 80 around here by wednesday. currently 64 at reagan

prince george's county residents did not dispoint at the grand opening of the first high end grocery store in the county. shoppers showed up in droves. i couldn't believe that parking lot even before the wegman's opened the new grocery store over the weekend. they estimate 1500 people arrived before the sun even came up. >> it is fantastic. >> well fors are dents it's more about the food and shoppers, it's about the economic impact. it created 650 now jobs. the hope is that the opening will set off new up-scale retail stores in the county. >> we did a study from an outfit that really laid out who we are as a community in terms of the demographics, the numbers, our in come, you name it. and once wegman's saw that report we knew the community we wanted to be in but we had to convince them that the
