and google employees. there is raises in your future. all except for one guy. everybody was given one except for him. and tucker barnes has a good looking forecast to tell us about. >> and day after day with a lot of temperatures back near 60. doing it again later today. let's get to the numbers. generally cool conditions across the region. 48 right now in downtown washington. 34 in frederick. 38 in winchester. cooler air off to the north and west. hager town is 38 as well. and warmer down toward patuxent naval air station. 59 and 50 in ocean city. high temperatures near 60. i guess the only difference is a little less wind today and maybe we'll lose a degree or two as this area of high pressure builds in from the west. but quiet conditions out there. there are clouds out to the east but they won't impact as that storm system pushes out to sea. very pleasant afternoon. winds nice and light out of the

north at 5 miles per hour. 61 is your afternoon high. going to love the weekend forecast. we'll have those details for new a couple of minutes. >> thank you. and we're following a developing story in the district this morning. a protest and counter protest to tell you about at george washington university. it's wrapping up right now. >> now the protest put on by members of the westboro baptist church, the counter protest by g.w. students. now on this veteran's day members of the church group are heading to arlington national cemetery to demonstrate. >> sarah simmons is live where that protest just wrapped up. was this a peaceful demonstration? >> reporter: exactly that. it was very peaceful. there was definitely chanting going on from both sides but for the most part it remained peaceful. they started at 8:00. they left half an hour ago. as you mentioned the westboro baptist church folks are on the way to arlington national
9:02 am
cemetery. but if you listen, this is what was going on a little while ago. students have their own strong message, turning out against the four westboro baptist church members that showed up here. there were several dozen students that were here. the westboro baptist church, as you may have heard about, spread an anti-gay message. they say that our troops will continue to die as the nation continues to sin. now they -- you may have heard of them. they attend military funerals across the country and they have gone before the supreme court because of that, due to first amendment rights issues, freedom of speech. so that has been a controversial issue. students had their own counter protest. we talked to a couple of them. actually one student said they had t-shirts made to try to kind of in a sense bring humor, if there is any, out in this. the shirts saying, "i am gay for today," in opposition to
9:03 am
what the church members had to say. take a listen. >> i'm gay for today and we're all heterosexual, but we're an accepting community and hopefully this is something our whole community can come behind and get together. >> so we're here with the simple message that your soldiers are going to keep on dying as this nation keeps on sinning. >> you may ask why george washington university and why this campus? according to the church leaders she said last year while the members stopped off at a food court here on campus, one of the students asked her to sign a petition supporting gay marriage, obviously going against what they believe. so that was part of the reason they chose this location today. part of the reason they are in washington, d.c., as you mentioned. they plan on attending or going to arlington national cemetery and picketing there as well this morning. we're live in northwest, sarah simmons, back to you. honoring america's heroes

today, as we said, is veteran's day. this is a live picture from arlington national cemetery. joe biden will attend the annual wreath laying ceremony at the tombs of the unknown at 11:00 a.m. and he'll make some comments at the memorial amphitheater. i experienced 17 surgeries and then i had the night sweats and the terrors and the post traumatickish traumatic issues. when they took me leg, i thought about taking my life. >> this is one of thousands of experiences by injured soldiers, ajusting to life after an injury requires physical and mental healing. >> well one group is offering help to heal the invisible wounds of war. major ed poll eato and joshua mans are with the real warriors campaign and they are join us on this day. good morning. >> good morning. >> it is our pleasure.
9:05 am
>> thank you for your service toal -- to all of us. tell us about this organization. >> allison, the purpose of the real warriors campaign is to reduce or eliminate the stigma associated with seeking help for emotional injuries and the invisible wounds of war. it is a department of defense initiative. >> why do you think there is stigma attached to this? it is the nature of our warriors that we feel we don't need help? >> we don't recognize that these issues are going on. there may be a stigma related to talking about the issue. and then also we may not know where the information is at and where we can access it. and at the real warriors campaign website, you can find all of this information. and you can also help those service members and those families can help service members on their way to recovery. >> and you know just how important this help can be. would you mind sharing a bit of
9:06 am
your stories in the army with us? >> well on the 17th of august of 2004, i hit an improvided explosive device, a roadside bomb which would lead to the amputation of my left leg. of course you're dealing with the physical wounds of war. but for me, one of the things that i didn't recognize and i knew i needed to get help for was the mental wounds from the suicide idealliation to depression. to me, that is when i was in my darkest days and dark et hours and i'm so grateful that the real warriors campaign is there to provide that support today so that we can have a great force for tomorrow. >> my story differs a little bit. i was wounded by an enemy sniper in bagdad during the surge in 2007. the round semered my femoral artery and i went on to die for 15 minutes straight before i was revived. i recovered at walter reed army medical center in washington,
9:07 am
d.c. and redeployed to iraq five months after the injury to finish the tour with my men. however, i've always been far more concerned about the emotional well being of the 36 other soldiers who were with me that day. it is not just the physically wounded soldiers that are effected by this. it is everybody that is a part of that unit and a part of that action. and it's those 36 soldiers who have to carry those emotional burdens with them for the rest of their lives and that's why it's absolutely critical that they are aware of the effects of the post traumatic stress and willing to seek help for it. >> major, if you could, in the last seconds, tell the viewers or somebody out there who knows somebody who needs help or a veteran who might need help, how do you get to the resources that you have available? >> well they can go to realwarriors.net. they can contact a hotline 866- 966-1020 and one of the things that we tell everyone that it is confidential. it is a chat line and you can talk about the issues at hand
9:08 am
and your family members can access these resources to better the lives of those that have served. >> thank you so much, both of you. >> thank you. >> thank you. and this is a special day for veterans. house speaker nancy pelosi joining disabled veterans to break ground on a new monument to every warrior that suffered a permanent injury. the monument will be across from the botanical garden on the national mall. the u.s. army is getting it's first seek soldier in three days. sim ron lamb bra is willing to train as a combat medic and defend his home. his religion requires him to wear a turban and sikhs are not muslims. a report is due on the president's desk in three weeks

9:10 am
need to gather up all of the facts. i think we have to be straight with the american people. >> even if the plans are approved, and that is a big if, five years from now the deficit would still be $400 billion. the new house speaker and majority leader are touting a plan to tackle the growing deficit. congressman john boehner and eric cantor want to slash the federal bureaucracy with a freezeond new hires and pay raises. a new usa today study found that federal workers making $150,000 or more per year has doubled since president obama took office. president obama is in seoul, south korea, for the two- day g-20 summit. the u.s., germany, china, brazil and ind yua are among the countries. the president called on other countries to pull their weight. especially when it comes to the world economy. he also said a strong u.s. economy is vital for a global

9:16 am
and took the baby off the train. >> the mother did catch the next train and was reunited with her baby. metro said the woman did not file a complaint. the transit agency adds the only way to prevent this from happening is for people to listen to the warning and clear the doorways when the announcements are made. allison, all parents pay attention. imagine being able to watch what is happening at your house with your baby sitter and child afternoon while out. you can achieve this with amazing tools and resources. joining us, allison rhodes from safety moms.com. thank you for coming in. >> thank you for having me. >> we are pleased to hhere. these devices are amazing. i i think things people have wanted and wished they could do, now they really can to protect their children. >> and it gives moms and dads peace of mind when they are away from their kids and they know they are safe. >> some of these items are new

and the price points may be a little bit high for some families but it's about the safety of your children and we'll see the price points come down over time. >> exactly. >> what do you want to start with? >> this is the adt post home monitoring system. i live in connecticut, i'm down here today in washington, d.c. my child is home for the vacation today. i have painters coming in, i can monitor everything happening in my home from my i pad. i can monitor my home while i'm away from home. so if my son came in the door, i get a text saying he came home. and when my daughter doesn't come in the door at 3:15, i can call the door and see what happened. i have painters come in, i can disarm my system and i can watch through my i pad on monitored what they are doing. >> now a lot of people have adt service so this is an add-on to that or get it separately. >> you can get is separately or
9:18 am
a add-on. but you can control your thermostat or lights. how many times did you walk out the door and forget to turn off the lights. this will turn them off. >> how much is this? >> it's about $145 and monitoring about $45 a month. >> and this is called the life belt. >> that's right. and we know how many accidents are happening and kids and people are still not wearing seat belts. this is life belt. you go -- you put it into your car and if the driver does not have their seat belt buckled the car will not start. and once it does start, if a passenger or the driver unfastened their seat belt, the radio goes down and a alarm goes up until they put their seat belt back on. >> i think that would encourage you to put it back on. and we do continue to see cases where it's children, not just adults, but the young drivers who -- here is the key. a lot of times the teen-agers, they don't think anything can happen. >> they feel invincible. we know that they are not from the stories we report every

fairly often on the air here, talk about safety online. again, every other day we have a new story that has happened to a child. what are some tips to give to parents that they should know and do. >> one of the things i think they need to understand and kids in particular need to understand, once it is out there, it is out there for ever. we have college admissions people, potential employers looking online and googling, kids that have lost college admission because of something me -- they put up online. google your child's name and see what is out there about them because it can be scary and have the conversations early and often. it's not too early at 4 or 5 to start talking about online safety and what they should know. >> great tips. we thank you so much, allison, for coming in. great stuff and hopefully we'll see you again soon. >> thank you. >> thank you very much. it's good to see you. >> great products, thank you. it's the story that had us

a mail bomb intercepted in england could have exploded over the northeastern united states. british police say the device was timed to detonate about 7 hours after the ups flight it was on left britain for the u.s. that means the explosion would have happened over upstate new york, eastern pennsylvania, or southern new jersey. yemen based al-qaeda has claimed responsibility for the bombs and vowed to send more explosive-packed parcels. and a luxury cruise vacation that was anything but. in the end it's finally coming to an end. the ship lost power after a fire in the engine room four days ago. more than 4,000 passengers are on board. the ship's staff is doing what they can to take care of the passengers, giving them spam and pop tarts dropped off from coast guard helicopters are some of the options to eat there. you know that travels well and

you might be encouraged to know that not all big business is freezing or cutting salaries during this economic downturn. google is giving it's 23,000 workers a 10% raise next year. the move is an attempt to prevent current employees for leaving the company for other companies like facebook. 10% are former google staffers. there is a twist. the worker who leaked information about the pay raise has been fired. so far no comment from google. >> how interesting. because this internet thing,
9:31 am
there are very few secrets any more. you can get all of the information there and that they would fire him for passing stuff out. >> if you tell 23,000 people, what are the chances of that? >> exactly? so what's the big deal? >> too bad for that one guy. but what they are doing is very smart. it's great. they're being proactive. we're going to give you raises, don't go to a rival. >> we appreciate you. >> that would be like this company giving all of us raises so we wouldn't go to the competitors. what a good idea that would be. >> i endorse you in that. unless it gets you in trouble. >> then you want nothing to do with it, right. >> thank you my friends. that's what a good news team is all about. [ laughter ] >> that's great stuff. beautiful day, another excellent afternoon. a lot of sunshine. temperatures around 60. you guys are very color coordinated. >> we're going to six flags after. you know how the young kids
9:32 am
dress up. >> back to you guys. you look great. >> it's the same shade of purple. >> but it is. and people write in and wonder, do you all coordinate, but no it just happens. >> back to the weather. beautiful day. sunshine across the area. 51 degrees at reagan national. 40s at the north and west. overnight we had some low 30s in places like frederick where the freezing mark, now 48. hagerstown is now 48. fredericksberg is 52 and leonardtown 48. and in annapolis 49. this weather forecast is an easy one as we're going to be enjoying temperatures back into the low 60s. can you still see it's cool off to the north and east and new york city is 44 at this hour. pittsburgh is 41. columbus is 39. so cool air underneath this area of high pressure. and as mentioned, it will be a nice couple of days around here as a couple of areas of high pressure, one big area of high pressure, kind of blocks the weather to the west and keep our pattern face and dry and sunny through the weekend. here is a look at it.
9:33 am
the cold front won't get in here because of high pressure but what will get in here, a lot of sunshine today and a nice warming trend. this area of high pressure will start to slip off the coast and our winds will shift out of the south at we get into the weekend and you know what that means? temperatures -- high temperatures back into the middle 60s. so it will get nice. the jet stream has kind of retreated to the north. and with that high pressure south of us, our winds will shift out of the south and west and that will deliver a couple more beautiful days around here. this weather pattern has been an easy one. forecast for high temperatures by saturday and sunday. take a look. back into the middle 60s. so this will be our official indian summer before cooldown next week. saturday and sunday look good. for out door plans, go for it. winds 5-10 miles per hour with plenty of sunshine. winds lighter than yesterday as well. and your five-day forecast, 42 tonight so cool one overnight. a lot of sunshine right through the weekend. a few more clouds on monday. could get a cooling rain by tuesday.
9:34 am
could use a little rain at this point. tuesday is our next chance. that's a look at the forecast. get out and enjoy. allison, back to you. >> tucker, thank you. there have been major developments in the trial of chandra levy. two charges were dropped against ingmar guandique. and paul wagner is here. a lot to think about with the jury. let's talk about the charges being dropped, two of them. >> okay. basically what we understand has happened here is that the prosecutors have decided tactically not to bring one of these witnesses in who was going to talk about an alleged confession by guandique to sexual a -- sexually assaulting levy and killing her. so if they can't bring this witness in, then they'll have to drop the charge. that was a big surprise and it was also a surprise that we didn't see more of these witnesses that we were supposed
9:35 am
were told that we would see a parade of witnesses who had spent time with guandique in prison. but we didn't see. that we only saw one person. so if you can't bring that witness in and the jury doesn't hear that evidence then you have to drop those two charges. so the way to look at it is there were six charges, a sexual assault connected to a homicide. kidnapping connected to a homicide and also attempted robbery attempted to a homicide. those are the four charges remaining. kidnapping, homicide and attempted robbery and homicide. >> and prosecution abruptly resting their case. was this a surprise? >> very much so. because last week they said we would see testimony through wednesday and then having today off because of veteran's day and then the judge would hear more testimony on friday afternoon from the prosecution. so the fact that they rested was a big surprise. >> what do you take from that, in your experience? case not as strong as they thought? what do you take from that? >> it's hard to say because
9:36 am
there is a gag order. and the prosecutors are not allow to talk to us. and neither is the defense. so what we see in court is what we understand to be going on. and so we really don't know what is happening here. can i tell you that there were two other witnesses that were in the witness room and ready to testify for the prosecution when they rested. we know one was iris portillo's mother. that was guandique girlfriend at the time of levy's disappearance. so we don't know what she was going to say. but there was also some talk from the defense that they might call those two women to the stand themselves. and this was another interesting little aspect here because they didn't want to talk to the defense, these two witnesses. and the witnesses wanted -- actually the defense wants to talk to them to see if they would call them but they were ultimately not called. we have to leave it up to what we see in the courtroom. >> a lot of talk about dna, including gary condit's dna
9:37 am
found on some under-things of chandra levy. let's start there. people are asking why is this relevant at all? >> it's not relevant to the case. but this is why it was done. it was a tacts cal move done by the prosecution because they had to get it out there. it was -- since it was tested, and the fbi did the testing, they have to reveal the results. and the prosecution has to turn the results over to the defense. so if the prosecution put it out there and the defense could put it out there and it could be an aha-moment. and so unfortunately for gary condit, it's proof that he had a relationship with chandra levy. he never wanted to admit it and wouldn't do it last week on the stand. but it was tactical. the prosecution had to do it. and we've seen this all along. the prosecution had to put on embarrassing things, they've had to put testimony on that didn't work for them, but they have to do it otherwise the
9:38 am
defense will do it and then the jury is left wondering, well why didn't we hear that from the prosecution. >> out of time. but the dna found on her tights didn't match condit or guandique. >> correct. and the defense is holding that up as, hey, this is the real killer and they want the jury to believe that. and there is no telling whose dna is that. >> we'll count on you for the details next week. you can follow the courtroom action thanks to paul because he's blogging from his seat in the courtroom, just head to myfoxdc.com and read the developments in this trial. she is an academy award winning actress but she can sing too. we're told. we'll let you listen to a clip
9:42 am
well just recently we told you about this carnival cruise line ship the splendor how it been stranded out there in the water and now finally some relief in sight. >> it's getting closer to the shore. it's being towed to shore. they lost power after a fire on monday. everybody is safe but they're probably sweaty. they lost their air- conditioning, they have no hot water or hot food. food has been shipped in and mostly stuff like spam and crackers and pop tarts, stuff like that. so the ship is getting closer to the shore. they do expect it to arrive shortly. >> and they're getting refunds and other things for their time. >> well here is what we can't wait for, the quotes from the
9:43 am
passengers as they disembark. that will be fun. [ music ] surely you recognize that woman singer. she's gwenyth paltrow. she made her debut at last night's awards. she performed country strong with music legend vince gill. >> is she really playing the guitar? watch how she's playing it. the song was written for her up coming movie titled country song. she received a standing ovation. next week fans can catch her on glee. she'll be playing a substitute teacher who takes over the glee club while mr. shoester is out sick. for a list of specific information -- for a list of the winners last night head to myfoxdc.com. >> i didn't see how she was playing. >> she was just kind of -- it didn't look real. >> maybe it was a prop. hugh heffner is turning into a modern day willie wonka.
9:44 am
>> in an effort to boost sales he's hiding 10 golden tickets in magazines on friday. the lucky winners get a free pass into the midsummer nights dream party at the mansion. it is usually filled with hollywood stars and of course the beautiful play mates. >> and this year heffner marks his 106th birthday. >> he looks good. >> yes, he does. all right, just because the weather is cooler doesn't mean you have to give up your outside decorations. coming up, our garden guru derek thomas shows us how to decorate for thanksgiving and to make a few changes for the christmas dekor. and holly has more on how you can help those serving overseas. we're back in a moment.
