our top story this morning, the white house is giving in a bit. the president laying the ground work to extend the bush-era tax cuts. this is a major reversal for the obama administration. doug luzader is joining us with more. >> reporter: good morning. this may be the first sign of the republican mid term victories playing out here on capitol hill with the president giving ground. >> i'm not going to negotiate here in seoul. >> reporter: maybe not. even in south korea, it was clear the president would probably have to give in to republicans on taxes. >> my number one priority is making sure that we make the middle class tax cuts permanent. we have give certainty to the 98% of americans who are affected by those tax breaks. >> reporter: but to do that, to extend some of the tax cuts that president barack obama signed into -- that president bush signed into law in his

funding of the budget by 2015. to compensate for the loss, the museum and zoo would charge $7.50 admission fees. the national park service which is expected to have a $3 billion budget is looking at a cut of $75 million under the proposal. to pay for that, the recommendations are looking to raise fees at parks that have one already. the price would go up by 25 cents. this is not the first time where the idea has been floated to charge admission fees to the smithsonian and the national zoo. in the past, one california congress member who sits on the board of the smithsonian said he would fight tooth and nail. these are just proposals and the big fight would be on capitol hill. that is the latest in southwest.

7:44 am
that? >> you know, people want to compare me with jackie robinson. i take polite umbrage to that. he was out there all by himself. he wasn't totally by himself. he had a wonderful wife. without rachel, he would not have made it. the whole thing is jackie came at a time where he was told he could not retaliate. nobody ever told me i could not retaliate. i knocked a few people out. i took that liberty. just for example, jackie robinson played first base. if you were the leftfielder, your paths never crossed. a guy can call you names from the dugout all day long and you cannot catch up with him because of the positions you

7:46 am
it. >> you don't get into it. we have guys that are angry because the kids make all this money. i get a chance every year to talk to the nba rookies. not talk to them, but spend time with them. i just try to get over to them that it is not what you make. it is what you keep. that is the important thing. i can't imagine myself making $5 million a year and two years later i'm broke. >> right. >> i said one kid said to me, when he found out who i was, he said we owe you. i said you owe some folks, but you owe me absolutely nothing. the people you owe are the people who will come behind you. it is incumbent upon you to leave this in a better place for the guys that are coming behind you. that is our legacy. there are not a lot of places
7:47 am
