of the year and ahead we are hearing more uncomfortable stories coming out of the airports. but passengers are planning to fight back. fox 5 morning news at 7:00 starts right now. take a look from tower cam as we see the first peaks of sunlight now on tuesday morning, november 23rd as we pan off to the east and look toward the downtown washington area. nice shot of the national cathedral. >> i'm so impressed. >> thanks for being here. i'm steve chenevey. >> and i'm allison seymour. you see there is a big monitor that you can't see. but any way, tony perkins, good morning to you. sunrise just occurred, 6:59. and you saw it here live. and we're going to see a very pretty morning. as the day progresses we'll get more clouds and they'll bring a chance of rain showers. let's look at hd radar.

we'll show you where the rain is now. it's way aout to the west -- way out to the west across west virginia and kentucky. we don't expect to get all of that. but we'll see some showers move through during the course of the afternoon hours. all of that rain won't hang together but some of it will work in here. current conditions being reported, right now at reagan national airport, current temperature is 52 degrees, relative humidity is 83%, your winds out of the south at 8 miles per hour. that's significant because those southerly winds bring warmer temperatures. your day planner for today, sunshine this morning giving way to mostly cloudy skies later. chance of scattered clouds. and high today in the mid to upper 60s. that's a look at the weather. now an update on traffic with julie wright. tony, we're talking about the crash that was on the inner loop of the beltway or make that the outer loop as you work toward route 4 pennsylvania avenue. you'll find the remains of this crash still there on the right

7:06 am
guandique will be sentenced february 11th. he faces life in prison. jurors would not specifically discuss their deliberations, they decided not to do that, they did say they carefully weighed the evidence before coming to a unanimous conclusion. >> we felt that we owed it to everyone involved to go through the evidence completely and to find in the end a verdict that we could all be comfortable with and would serve all of the parties involved to the best of our ability. >> the jurors not the only ones speaking out on yesterday's verdict. chandra levy's another spoke. susan levy has fought to bring her daughter's killer to justice. she said while she feels relief, there is no closure. >> there is always going to be

a young person, loss of life, you have someone who is accused and a family who has lost a child. that's the starting point. i don't care if you're a defense lawyer, the prosecutor, that's the starting point. but looking at the case, you almost wonder how the government pulled the rabbit out of the hat on this one because there wasn't that much evidence and when you look at how they put the case together, when you have experienced prosecutors, what they are doing is they're doing a continuous assessment, how is my case coming in? do i really need to prove all of the counts we started with, because the government lost the number of counts. and then from a defense standpoint, what you're trying to be prepared for is what if the government cuts short its case and what if i need to jump in right now. how can i work with the witnesses on the stand, particularly if my client has a prior conviction who i know i

deliberation process and you're trying to think about how do i rework the case. and i truly believe that was probably the most powerful evidence the government had in terms of being able to say, this is something who has committed attacks against women in this venue, and that was -- that probably was the game- breaker for the government and really made it possible to win the conviction. without that, i'm not sure the government would have obtained a conviction. >> we have to end it there. in the end the jury said we're not going to speak about deliberation. we had enough evidence to make that decision and we're at peace with that. >> ultimately that's who make the decisions, it's the jury. and next is sentencing. >> jacob frankel, we appreciate your insight. it's a rare opportunity to have somebody to speak on both sides. >> great to be back. thank you. >> and we have everything you need to know on myfoxdc.com. log on and let us know what you

holly is getting ready to learn different ways to prepare a turkey at zola's wine and kitchen. that's my theory. i'm not going to eat anything and then at thanksgiving i'll eat everything. >> reporter: i like it. but today we're going to talk about how to fix turkey three different ways. so our first way, i am going to call it the -- oh, my gosh, how did you fix that turkey segment. because this is off the beaten path and different than the norm and the brian did doing it -- and the person doing it is brian muskat ello. this is a great time of year? >> exactly. >> reporter: and the first way is called what? >> the modern version. >> reporter: but it's technically called? >> it's old world technique which is the [ inaudible ] with
7:53 am
a modern innovation which is the su-ving of the turkey. >> reporter: let's get started. first i bone out the turkey legs and get these off the carcus here. >> reporter: and if people with buying fresh turkeys and going to the store today or tomorrow, what should they look for? >> you want a nice, fresh turkey. you can buy organic or natural. i usually go to my local butcher shop, order up a turkey. when you order it, it's going to be very fresh because they're getting them place -- and placing the orders as opposed to the stores that ordered the foods and were frozen way back then. and so we make a mixture of salt, sugar, herbs and some garlic and let this sit
7:54 am
overnight. once it's cured overnight, i like to soak these in duck fat. >> reporter: because everybody has duck fat at home. okay buy your duck fat and do that. >> and we just give it a covering and it will impart the flavor of herbs and salt and sugar into the thigh. and it's going to help in the tenderizing process of fixing the texture a little bit -- it changes texture a little bit. so let that go overnight. >> reporter: and then it's the next day. >> perfect. but we'll get back to our breast real quick. so our breast, same thing, we take it off the carcus. and the reason i like to take the breast and legs off the carcus is because i do like the flavor of the way we're preparing them, but more importantly it gives me these bones. this makes a great gravy, as opposed to trying to get the drippings. >> reporter: we have two minutes, just want to make sure we get through. >> no problem.
7:55 am
and we'll take off the breasts and these will go into cryo vac bagged and sealed and then put into a warm water bath to cook at four hours at a precise controlled part. >> reporter: and that is the su- ving part. >> yes. >> reporter: and it cooks three hours or depending on the size of the bird. >> right. >> reporter: and from there? >> we go back to the legs. i crisp them up in a little bit of the duck fat. >> reporter: which is sold everywhere by the way. i'm giving you a hard time. >> it is sold everywhere. >> reporter: i believe you. and there is our legs. look at that. >> golden brown delicious and it's a textureal change. >> reporter: and we have less than a minute. >> and here we have our turkey
7:56 am
breast that you've taken out of the su-ving and there is our turkey. >> reporter: and you guys are having a pie class tonight and then traditional tomorrow? >> correct. we are also doing a little turk- away, which is our order your turkey thanksgiving dinner for takeaway. >> reporter: you can get it this way? >> you cannot. >> reporter: can you cut me off a slice so i can taste it. >> i sure can. >> reporter: myfoxdc.com is our website to find out about things and to place your order. i'm going to try the first one. whoa, it's hot. if i don't burn my -- my something.
7:57 am
oh, my gosh, how did you make that turkey? i'm telling, that's what your guests will say. we have the recipe online if you want to try it out. coming up in the next hour, i think we're going back to traditional. that always works but this really works. back to you. >> i can tell from that reaction. >> i'm jealous. >> it just looks good. for us, we just get to look at it. a lot of people talking about selling gold. the gold prices high and the cash supply low. >> and folks are trying to sell unused gold but is this a good idea. we'll talk to an expert on this coming up after 8:00. he grew up in arlington and now making up big in hollywood. we're talking about greg garcia. yes dear, and my name is earl, we'll talk with him coming up. s

8:06 am
they did. >> based on the question they asked last week, we thought they were leaning toward a conviction. i sat through the testimony and i thought it could go either way. i thought the defense had poked enough holes notice prosecution case it could sew some doubt into the minds of jurors but they said yesterday they were just taking their time, they were going through all of the evidence, they said it was a lot of evidence and it took three and a half days to get through it but they found enough they were very confidence that they could find ingmar guandique guilty. >> we talked earlier this morning with a former prosecutor, now currently a defense attorney who said he was surprised because of the lack of direct evidence tieing him to the case with no dna evidence. but as you said, the jury said that didn't matter too much in their decision. >> well if you can boil it down, i think there were three things that we heard in the courtroom that these jurors must have really zeroed in on and that is the prior bad acts.
8:07 am
guandique had pled guilty to attacking two women in the park, attacks identical to the attack on chandra levy. those women testified in court. there was the woman, mrs. mendez, ho became a pen pal of guandique. she exchanged letters with him. and then there was a recorded phone call, this is very important, because the letter that she alleges that came from guandique to her never materialized. it doesn't exist. but there was a recorded phone conversation that the two had in which she asked guandique about this, quote, dead girl, and he never denied it. and then we had armando morales who spent time in a cell with guandique and apparently with the jurors that was the key to this case. and i sat in there and listened to this man and he was rivetting. he was believable. even though he was a thug, he had spent many years in prison, he was a enforcer for a gang in california, but the story he
8:08 am
told seemed to ring true with these jurors. and he gave details that we had never heard before, details that seemed to play into the scenario of what happened to chandra levy. >> without any direct evidence of the case, any chance of an appeal at some point or that that could weigh heavily in the favor of an appeal? >> i think appeals are pretty standard these days. unless you plead guilty and then you lose your right. but i think you can count on an appeal. there are several things that i think he can try, but i think the one thing that stands out to me is this unknown dna that was on chandra levy's tights. i felt all along that the jury would have a difficulty getting by that, but obviously they believed that the prosecution theory of this unknown dna not connected to guandique or condit was contaminated after the tights were taken out of the woods in 2002. and so that was the prosecution's explanation. >> still have the sentencing to
8:09 am
come. do we know details as to whether or not any sentence, whatever that sentence would be, would that be tacked on to the end of his current sentence, do they run at the same time? >> good question. i don't know what darrell fisher will do, the judge. but he has to serve out the remaining time on the -- on his sentence for attacking christie wiegand and holly schilling and that's about two years to go on that. so it would seem like he would have to serve it consecutively, after his term finishes. so he's going to be in prison for a very long time. >> paul wagner covering the case and did a great job. we appreciate your updates, paul. enjoy doing something different today. >> i'm glad it's over, to be honest with you. >> thanks, paul. well new comments out today from pope benedict xvi about his recent remarks about condom use. in his book released today he said the condom use could be a lesser evil than transmitting

8:19 am
that. >> absolutely. and that's a very good point. because it's a complicated transaction. first of all, people don't have a hunk of gold in their house. they may have some gold but it's a complicated transaction. there is different forms of measurements. there is karates with a k, and car ats with a c. and we have troy ounces and penny weights. and the price fluctuates every day. >> and so you passed along tips. you said think two or three times before you sell. is this a way of stop, do i really need this money and i might not get what i deserve? >> absolutely. there are better ways of doing it. it's like jumping out of a window. a lot of things could happen on the way down and the amount of risk depends on how high the window is. and you have gold parties and gold kits and online selling and expos at hotels and
8:20 am
shopping mall stores are popping up but you don't know what the value is unless you have it appraised, go to a reputable jewelry store or things like that. but just putting your gold in an envelope, mailing it off and hoping that it comes back with some money, it's just a fool- hearted way of doing it. >> you talked about doing an appraisal and know the units of measurement. and you say check gold values daily. now if we even have this information how does that help us to get some quick cash? >> it gives you an idea of how high the value is. but you don't know. 14 k gold is 15% pewer. but you don't know what other metals are in the item and it might be worth more at a pawn shop selling it for the value of the coin itself, maybe worth more than the actual gold in there. but it's a difficult way. it is a seller beware when you are selling items with gold in them. >> and the last tip is just one to think about it and let it
8:21 am
resonate in your head. this is not a remedy for long- term problems. why do you say that? >> if you're facing long-term financial problems, you need some financial counseling and budgeting and running around the house to try to find something with gold and running off to a hotel to sell it, is not real way to deal with the long-term issues a family is facing. >> in the west are you dealing with this yet? if people want more information, where can they go. >> we have information on our web page. we're starting to get calls. the better business bureau is getting complaints about this situation. so it's a modern day gold rush. >> eric freeman with the montgomery county office of consumer protection. thank you so much. steve, over to you. 8:21 right now. traffic could get worse in the new year as metro riders lose some of their commuter benefits. we'll detail that when we come back. and let's check in now with holly. >> reporter: we're talking turkey this morning as we're live at zola wine and kitchen.

8:35 am
it's a kind of a krazy jumping off point but then the characters are relatable, what they go through on a daily busy. and the actors make you believe these people are real that it's easily acceptable. >> and where did you get the idea in the first place because this sounds like after a fraternity party, let's throw this together. >> and i was doing mas earl and i had this idea with to ending so the good thing is to make it a tv show because you don't need an ending. and i went over to kevin reilly at fox and pitchd it to him and he wanted to do it. and you have leachman, at the top of the list. how important was it to bring her on board or somebody with her credentials when it came to acting? >> she's great. the original script didn't have a lot of lines and she called me and thought it was hilarious

and then we added more for her. recently she's decided she's going to lick me. i sprayed some bitter apple on my neck to keep her off of me. and she went in for it any way. but she's great. >> one of the things that i think is great and we see it with burt, the father on the show, you turn it on and see him wearing a caps t-shirt. you like to bring your home town to hollywood? >> those are my teams, caps and redskins and i like to put my characters in the stuff for a couple of reasons. one, i'm a fan, so i like to support it. two, i get wardrobe to get two of everything so i can get free shirts for myself and then i also try to work it into some tickets once in a while. so it's all about trying to get to see the game. >> well then it works out for you and us as well. >> everybody wins. >> it's a win-win situation. are we going to see more of that. and some of the locals are loosely based on some real areas, especially with my name is earl.
8:37 am
do you try to work in some of the d.c. area? >> once in a while if i do college stuff i call frostberg state university and some of the stuff is loosely based. it's tough because we shoot out side and there is palm trees and so it's hard to pull anything off on the east coast. and i name my kids after the towns. natesville is a town and that's after my son. >> and you used yourself and wife's name as characters. >> i did. just a lack of creativity. and i just look around and whoever i see, i name a character after. >> why confuse things too much. and this is keeping you are busy. but are you working on anything else? >> not working on anything else right now. i'm a one-show kind of guy. it's a 14-15 hour a day job and i stick with that and just work real hard at this and try to make it the best we can. >> the next episode is on tonight here on fox 5. greg, it's great to see you. welcome home. i know you're going to try to
