9:16 am
expert on migraines and how to avoid them. good morning. >> good morning. and the real trick is avoiding migraines. >> before we get to that. we said they are different than your just basic supersized headache. >> right. >> what is the difference between a really bad headache and a migraine, there can be a blurring of the boarders, but migraines are sick headaches. you have nausea associated with it, vomiting and real sensitivity to light and to sound. and they may put you in bed for a couple of day. so migraines can last from four to -- four hours to about 72 hours, three days. there is a throbbing quality to the headache and they come in kind of two broad categories. they come in the classical form which has ore associated with it and you may find your clumsy for 10-15 minutes before the onset of the headache. and the common migraine which doesn't have an ora associated with it, but it's a throbbing,
9:17 am
sickening headache and people want to withdraw and go into a bedroom where it is dark and quiet. sleep can help, but it can incapacitate you for up to several days at a time. >> knock on wood, i'm one of those people that rarely gets a headache. >> bless you. >> are there certain people who are more prone to migraine headaches than others? >> women overall are more prone. about 3 times as many headaches get migraines as men. overall we see about 30 million people in the country suffer from migraines. and of that, about 5-10% of children and adolescents suffer migraines. so it's a condition that effects the young and adults. >> let's talk about what triggers them? >> well there is environmental triggers. stress is a big trigger. and this holiday season, the fact of the matter is we've only got 24 hours in a day. that's it. and so you have to be intelligent about what do you with that 24 hours. prioritize what you are going
9:18 am
to do. it's okay to say no to some things and not attend some events. you need to guard your sleep. sleep is critical. if you start getting too little or even too much sleep, or you start shifting the hours that you sleep, so normally you go to bed and now it's 1:00 because you are wrapping gifts, that can be a trigger for a migraine. so making sure that your sleep remains consistent and getting adequate amount of sleep for yourself, which is typically about 7-8 hours a night. >> somebody might take a pain medicine to either get rid of the headache or whatever, but if you overuse pain medication that can be a trigger. >> pain medication can be a mixed blessing. we're talking advil or tylenol, over-the-counter stuff. if you use those more than three days a week, there is a possibility that those medications will cause the headaches to rebound and you feed to take more medication in order to treat the headache and in worst case scenarios over time you end up with a headache
9:19 am
that occurs virtually every single day. >> that's awful. what about food? >> foods are another serious trigger. alcohol being one of them. red wine in particular. but smoked foods, such as smoked fish can be a trigger. anything that is pickled can be a trigger for it. things sweetened with aspartame, and make sure with your diet that you are eating on a regular basis, low blood sugar can be a trigger. >> so we aref we are cognizant we can make lessen the frequency of the migraine and get rid of them altogether? >> well you probably can't get rid of them altogether, but you can decrease the frequency of them. utilizing as a supplement, magnesium, 300 milligrams a day, may cut down the frequency of the migraines. you can do that from over-the-
9:20 am
counter stuff. also using something like rhino online has been helped to reduce it. and q-10 an over-the-counter supplement, 100 milligrams per day can be helpful in reducing frequency and may eliminate the recurrence. >> dr. kaplan, thank you. we appreciate you coming in. great tips. well time magazine has unveiled its person of the year. it is mark zuckerberg. he is the 26 -- he's so young, 26-year-old founder of facebook. they credit him with connected more than half a billion people and creating a new system of exchanging information and changing how we all live. wiki leaks julian assange won person of the year in the readers' poll. a hearing today to decide if the founder of wiki leaks should be released from jail. we'll tell what you a judge decided and we have more on who is now coming to his defense.

a half inch or an inch here in washington and more south and west. but it's been so cold the last several days anything that falls will stick even though it's quickly out of here by thursday evening. and during the day on friday we'll quiet down. but we have to watch tomorrow evening for a little light snow. sunny and cold and windy at times. high temperature 30 degrees with winds out of the north and west at 10-20, gusting to about 30 miles per hour. and here is your five-day forecast. light snow in the forecast tomorrow. friday and saturday, sunshine returns. can you believe it, we'll be near 40 degrees. yes, 40 on friday. time to celebrate. back into the 30s on saturday and sunday. and listen, there could be another coastal system. let me tell but that quickly on sunday. that could be a more significant snow but it might also miss us so we'll watch carefully. >> okay, now it's side's birthday party on sunday. >> so then we'll keep it out to the east. >> thank you.

9:35 am
don't see evidence of any of that so we will not prosecute him so all charges have been dropped. so that is like the first positive story with charlie sheen in quite sometime. >> sure it was just a misunderstanding. dax, tell us about the sexiest couple, too sexy for each other. >> this one shocked me. but ryan reynolds and scarlet johansson are filing for divorce. they have been separated for quite sometime apparently. and now they will be ending their marriage. this was all confirmed by their reps. but the thing is, they're one of the couples that you never really saw them out ever. they were very private people, they would only go out very once in a while for a little motorcycle ride or something like this. so there was never any signs for anybody to say we don't see them together any more and suddenly, boom, they are done. >> and because he was just putting on a good face, but when ryan reynolds got sexiest man, he said something like, that just means the sexiest man takes out the garbage so i
9:36 am
guess he was still playing along. >> and in the gq interview in september she said she's the best thing that ever happened to me and talked positive. so i would say, if it pops up and they want to ask about your wife, you go, i don't want to talk about my private life. because i think it leaves people thinking that your marriage is doing fine so maybe that's what they wanted people to think. >> that's too bad. >> hulk hogan, brawl at the wedding. >> a wedding and a fight breaks out. >> he got remarried yesterday to jennifer mcdaniels, his 35- year-old fiance. she's the one that looks similar to his ex-wife. and they got married at his estate down in florida. and right when they were about to do vows they spotted.speaking up and so there was a brawl. cops were called. but everything turned out to be just fine. they ended that. there were no charges pressed and they went back and finished
