fun. kids get to throw snowballs before heading off to school for a couple of hours. thank you for the picture. we may get the possibility of more picture taking this weekend. cold right now. 28 at reagan. winchester at 21. early this morning, martinsburg was 9 degrees. it is cold overnight. the snow pack froze up overnight. it will thaw here in a couple of hours as the temperatures will top out eventually in the low to mid-30s later this afternoon. more comfortable. the satellite/radar showing you nothing. i mean nothing. there is a little cloud cover across the area. we are not expecting anymore snow shower activity or rain today. it should be a quiet one for us today. kind of sunny and bright. we will gain a bit of sunshine. warmer than yesterday. 35 is the afternoon high. we will melt off some of the snow. we have been talking about the

potential for another weekend storm. i'll have details in a couple of minutes. back to you. thank you. right now, we want to look at what is going on outside. >> paul is live in fairfax with the close look at icy conditions in that part of our area. good morning, paul. >> reporter: good morning. i have to say it is not icy where i am right now. we are right by route 50 in fairfax. the roads are looking great. they are clear. the snow is melting in the turn lane. the only main concern for people on the roads is side streets and sidewalks. be very careful when walking down the sidewalks. the side streets are not plowed. they will be slick with black ice. one thing i have been talking about is people get a bad rap of freaking out when snow

occurs locally. i asked a few people if we freak out when it snows here. >> yes. we had 1 1 point -- 1-2" and people freak out. i agree. >> i don't understand it. the problem is i'm from chicago. this stuff makes me crazy when people close schools early and they open school late. >> i agree. most of the schools are closed today. i think that is okay. they are kids and the school buses have a hard time going around. a lot of people left work yesterday at 2:00. i stayed until 6:00. i have relatives in wisconsin. >> reporter: the con -- consensus with them is we overreact a bit. i will not say i agree or

disagree. tucker mentioned snowballs. the snow is not great snowball weather. guys? >> i think you are right. >> reporter: the snow is not good snow. the weather is cold enough. >> we have to wait for that. paul, thank you. well, looking to other news now in the terror threat over christmas. the fbi and homeland security are warning state and local police to take extra precaution. the alert comes in the wake that al-qaeda may be planning attacks in the united states and europe over the holidays. we have katharine harrige explaining. >> reporter: u.s. officials are taking the threat seriously and running it down. the video of sweden's first suicide bomber who was r adicalized in britain.

two insurgents claim this was an attack planned by al-qaeda to launch global operations. u.s. officials confirm that the iraqi shared the information adding the threat picture is not fully formed. there is no specificity of the attacks. analysts say this group may be on the verge of a comeback. >> it is true that aqi is having a bit of a revival. it is not going back to the strength it had three or four years ago. it clearly is not dead yet. we shouldn't discount the threat coming out of iraq. >> reporter: the underwear bomber was in a detroit court today facing an expanded indictment that included terrorism charges. with the failed bombing of flight 253 last christmas, officials are more concerned about this holiday season because the groups like al- qaeda in yemen is to i --

improve their street credibility. >> it is becoming more important now that the al-qaeda tribal areas are under more pressure. it is the time where the affiliates have a chance to step up and overtake. >> reporter: this released public service announcement shows security sweeps that are now in place in washington d.c. and boston and new york. homeland security and the fbi issued a bulletin over the threats during the holidays. in washington, katharine herridge fox news. the transit agency is stepping up security efforts. we have sherri ly with more on

the bag searches. >> reporter: the bag searches begin immediately. if you are riding metro today, you will be subjected to random searches. anything you bring on a train, your purse, a backpack, a package will be subject to inspection. officers will check your bags for hazardous materials. bomb sniffing dogs will be used. metro says there will be no need to open up a bag, unless the canines or other detection devices give police reason to be suspicious. anyone refusing will not be allowed into the station or on to a bus with their bags. >> i think security is good now. it is one more thing. like the airport. >> i think it is their metro. they can do what they want. if somebody comes into my house

and i don't know who they are, it is my right to ask. if i'm concerned about it, i think it is for general public safety. i don't think there is any reason to get hysterical. >> reporter: boston and new york city are already doing this. metro police say that these bag searches are not in response to any particular threat. it is something that has been in the works for years. that is the latest in arlington. back to you. >> thank you, sherri. vince gray will name more members of the transition team. he is expected to announce directors of departments this afternoon. just yesterday, he named his safety team. kathy leiner as the city's police chief. his reason is the 80% approval rating and declining crime rate.

he announced that ken ellerbe as the fire chief. the city council must now sign off on the appointments. in the meantime, there is a tax controversy over the pick for fire chief. we have records showing that ellerbe is taking a deduction for washington d.c. residents, but he lives in florida. the tax credit is worth $67,000 for his home in southeast washington d.c. ellerbe pledged not to take the tax deduction on his 2010 taxes. now to a new development in the fox 5 investigation. a washington d.c. firefighter on leave for more than three years and being paid with your tax dollars, but not working one day for it. natalie overton is charged with

fraud. robbie chavez was in court yesterday. no action was taken until our series of reports aired last week. >> reporter: natalie overton did not say a word as she walked out of the courthouse. she is now accused of pocketing money that belonged to the city. these court documents outlined an alleged scheme. including the coalition for the homeless and universal ballet. by december of 2008, the office of inspector general had evidence of wrongdoing. last week, fox 5 first shed light on the investigation that was put on hold for nearly two years. these do dock -- these documents show she had been on leave as may of 2007 and the department sat on his discipline case. she made have earned as much as

$255,000. last week, city leaders were fuming. >> if there was wrongdoing done, they should identify it and discipline and move on. instead of this lingering forever. thedepartmentt is fraught with overtime problems. >> i know you take pride in your work. >> reporter: in court, prosecutors outlined the scheme. these documents show overton conducted cpr classes on the clock as a firefighter. the documents say instead of turning the money over to the city for the cpr classes, she pocket t money. rece ownbank account. the scheme took place from march 2007 to august of 2008. insiders wonder why the supervisors and training academy never once asked the question where is the money when she would return from training. a source directly involved in

the investigation told fox 5 last week that there was a reason why no one moved on the case. the high-ranking source told us that "the investigation revealed some damaging misuse of money. once she was on leave, the investigation revealed that a lot of people, including high- ranking officials knew what was going on and stood on the sidelines and watched." >> prosecutors say overton said she was providing cpr training as part of her own private business. time sheets show she was on the clock and paid as a firefighter. she is now facing criminal charges. she will be switched from paid leave to leave with no pay. the fire department has not taken any action on her employment status. the holiday season is a happy time for many people. it can also be a source of stress and cause of depression. coming up, a psychologist will join us in studio with advice on getting through the holiday

welcome back. it is a done deal. income tax rates are not going up at the end of the year thanks to an agreement in congress. it was part of a late night on capitol hill. doug luzader has the latest. >> reporter: the president may sign the deal into law today extending the bush-era tax cuts for another two years. at the same time, a massive spending bill here ran into a wall. you may not like the prospect of filling out tax forms, but you know what you will pay. >> the motion is adopted. >> reporter: the house last night signed off on a deal to extend the tax cuts that president bush enacted in the first term in office. it passed easily, but not without drama.

>> this is a bad deal. this is not creating jobs we could create with a smaller price tag. >> reporter: democrats did not like extending tax cuts to the wealthy. republicans did not like extending the long-term unemployment benefits. house speaker nancy pelosi voted against it. democrats did not fare better in the senate. they forced the clerk to read every word of the 1900-page spending bill. >> they want to ram this bill through congress and they are using the christmas break as an inducement to vote for it. >> reporter: in the end, democrats backed down. so as it stands on saturday, the federal government could simply run out of money. before that happens, congress will probably agree on a temporary funding measure to keep the government operating

for a short period of time. in washington, doug luzader, fox 5. although the holidays are a good time of cheer, they can be stressful. you add in unrealistic expectations and you have a perfect recipe for holiday depression. we havegregg jones. a psychologist. first of all, that are for being here. -- thank you for being here. expectations is the big one. we set ourselves up for failure. >> i to the ali agree -- i -- i totally agree with that. about having the perfect christmas. when we set the high expectations, are you setting your -- you are setting yourself up for failure. they are impossible to meet. set realistic expectations to have a happy and successful holiday season. >> you know what?

i think television and books and movies and all of that sort of sets us up for that. that is what we see. why do people get depressed during the holidays? >> there are a lot of reasons why people get depressed. from the lack of sunlight. the dreary weather. financial concerns. family concerns. relationship problems. things are just coming to a head. holidays are a bench mark where people reflect on their lives. it can bring up a lot of issues. >> if you are dealing with those things or you have a family member dealing with those things, how do you know if it is just the blahs or depression? >> there are a lot of things you can look for. everyone gets down a bit. it is important to look to see about the severity of the symptoms. if you are struggling with your energy, look to see how difficult it is to get out bed.

are you struggling in the morning? difficulty focusing or concentrating? you feel like eeorye from winnie the pooh. >> if you feel like you or somebody you know is dealing with some of the things or maybe some practical tips on how to get through the holidays and maybe it is just getting through. maybe it is not the perfect. >> prevention is key. really set your self up for success. focus on self care. proper nutrition. exercise. take time out to take care of yourself. spend time with family and friends. don't overburden yourself. don't overcommit. make sure you are doing proper and healthy holiday planning. if you are struggling, reach out and talk to someone. ask for help. family and friends.

your local church. if need be, come seek professional help. there is nothing wrong about talking to someone when you are struggling and need help. >> i heard somebody say i hate the holidays. i am trying to buy gifts for the in laws. i'm stressed out. >> yes. >> you are saying we really need to pull back from that and focus on what is really important. maybe that will help us out a bit. >> exactly. it is important to focus on what the holidays mean to you. is it family? togetherness? is it about perfection? >> if you don't have blood family, find a friend family. >> that is important. if you cannot be with your family, spend time with friends and loved ones and even coworkers. >> it is about being connected. thank you for being here. >> thank you for having me. >> we have the tips on our web

look for icy patches. the sidewalks as well. we are going to be above freezing later today. temperatures top out in the 30s. watching the coastal storm. it hasn't developed. the potential is out there that some of us, and let me say some of us, could see snow on sunday. still too early to call how close the storm will get to the washington d.c. area. i can guarantee you this, it will be snowing and temperatures will be cold. 28 degrees at reagan. 1-2" fell during the day yesterday. 25 in quantico. 23 in dulles. martinsburg, you are warming up. you were 9 earlier. we have a bit of cloud cover working through. we will see more sunshine. we will have a mostly sunny afternoon and more pleasant day too with temperatures in the 30s. less wind than the last couple of days. let's focus on the weekend. saturday, no problems. cloud cover around tomorrow. as we get into sunday, we watch

an area of low pressure develop right down here in the northern gulf. it will trek up the eastern seaboard. models are having a tough time on this one. they want to take it out to sea and throw it back into the mid- atlantic. it is trekking back to the mainland. our potential for a snow event around here on sunday has gone up. i have to be honest, the storm hasn't developed. we have to wait and see where it goes this weekend. sunday is the time frame on the snow. today is no problems. lots of sunshine. we have clouds out there right now. 35 degrees. winds will be light from the north and west. partly cloudy and cold overnight. refreezing out there. take it easy. 23 degrees. here is the five-day forecast. 36 degrees. i have the question mark with the snow on sunday. we have to follow the path of the storm carefully. we will have the latest here on fox 5. 35 on monday and 36 on

an icon on cable television exits after a quarter century. larry king signed off for the last time last night. we will still see him do four specials a year for cnn. the 77-year-old announced last summer he will leave the network. several items of john lennon's will hit the auction block. other items are the suit that he wore in the "imagine" video and the 1972 chrysler station wagon. the memorabilia will be auctioned off on new year's day in connecticut. we will have ask allison next. >> it is a tricky one. we will try to help out. we will do it together. >> that will be fun.

wanted to be in that position again. >> absolutely. i contacted smoky glen farms. he has a tree farm he opens up one weekend a year. we went there and i worked with the uso and they selected the families. our employees raised the funds to purchase all of the trees and fixings for the military families. >> reporter: how many trees? >> this year was 100 trees. on top of that, we donated 53 pre-lit trees. >> reporter: awe don'ted military kids arbutus and -- and you adopted military kids as well? >> yes. >> we get the energy. the company gets the energy. the employees get the energy. it was a great event. it was more than just going out and selecting a christmas tree. on top of that, our employees

go to myfoxdc.com. it is time for the friday segment that everybody loves. ask allison. >> i'm helping out a married woman today. the letter is long. i want to paraphrase. my husband's mother asked for help with the mortgage. she had a steady job for 20 years. she is a teacher. she doesn't treat me nicely. imagine my surprise when i checked out our savings and a significant amount was missing. i asked my husband and he said he helped his mom. yikes. and she does talk to her in laws. it turns out the father in law did not know either that the mother did it. the only people who knew were the son and the mom and wife. the wife talked to the mother- in-law. the husband has paid back the money. the husband has given the money

back and apologized. the mother-in-law has not. we are both married people. >> yes. >> we both have in laws. we both have -- all of us have husbands who love their moms. >> yes. >> i think in this one it is hard. the weak link is the husband in this one. he was not forthcoming. he did not tell the wife that this is what he was going to do regardless of what she said. i don't think that is the right thing to do. i think he was dishonest and i think he and his mom created a bond that left the wife out. that is not fair. that is not right to do. what will you do about it? it is over. she also says we are all having christmas dinner together. as we heard earlier this week, don't bring it up at the dinner table. this is something that the larger family doesn't have to be involved in. the mother is defiant. she will not apologize. she will not do it at christmas

dinner. no need to make further rifts in the family. i say this is a part of marriage. it is difficult. at this point, the wife and husband have a heart-to-heart. this must never happen again. this is their savings. that is what i think. it is uncomfortable, but it is life. you did the right thing by expressing yourself. you have to let it go. >> i agree with you. i think that when you get married, that becomes your family unit. >> yes. >> you don't leave them behind in the way it sounds. >> you become a family unit. i think the husband and wife need to be honest with one another. if the woman's mother-in-law, the husband's mother had needed help, it is okay to ask for help. but the husband should have been honest with the wife and said i know how you feel about this, but i feel that i need to
