orders from president barack obama. the seals raided a camp and he was killed. osama bin laden's body was buried at sea following islamic tradition and we'll have much on this story in a moment. but first we'll say good morning to tony with the forecast for the washington area. >> good morning. we have a few rain showers moving through the region. let's check in with hd radar and you can see the band of rain north and west of the city, around frederick, maryland, where there is heavy rain. down across silver spring, probably getting some rain showers into northern portions of the district. alexandria and southern portions of prince george's county down toward la plata. these rain showers moving to the east this morning. so if you're off to the east, haven't seen yet, you're likely to get sprinkles or rain

7:04 am
>> reporter: in a stunning white house announcement, president obama said that terror mastermind osama bin laden is dead and it came at the hands of u.s. military personnel. >> the united states has conducted an operation that killed osama bin laden, the leader of al-qaeda, and a terrorist who is responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women and children. a small team of u.s. special forces launched a target add salt -- targeted assault on saturday. >> after a fire fight they killed osama bin laden and took custody of his body. >> reporter: bin laden's identity confirmed by a dna test. his most recent recording came in january. the 54-year-old terrorist has topped the fbi's most wanted list for more than a decade. his capture has been the country's highest order. >> it does not mark the end of our effort. there is no doubt that al-qaeda
7:05 am
will continue to pursue attacks against us. we must, and we will, remain vigilant at home and abroad. >> reporter: osama bin laden has been buried at sea and it was done quickly, which is in keeping with islamic tradition. the reason it was done at sea is two-fold. first of all, u.s. officials did not know which country would accept his remains. and they did not want to give the opportunity for shrines to pop up to make him a martyr and also on the reverse side they do not want to give people an opportunity to deface those shrines so that's why his body was indeed buried at sea. allison, back to you. >> audrey barnes live outside of the white house. thank you. president bush called this a momentous achievement and president obama called him last night -- the president called the former president shortly before he addressed the nation. now in a state president bush said that osama bin laden's death is marking a victory for
7:06 am
america and for people who seek peace around the world and for those who lost loved ones on september 11th, 2001. and he said the united states sent a message that no matter how long it takes, justice will be done. and thousands of families who lost loved ones on 9/11 in new york and in the pentagon. earlier we talked with a family who had a son on flight 77 that crashed into the pentagon. >> it does help ease the pain. we have tried for nine and a half years to get this guy and to know that our forces finally did is helpful. it does help. even though it's bittersweet for us. >> i'm just glad that he as the head of what he was is gone. and it gives a lot of closure.
7:07 am
it shows that the united states is unified in going after him and getting him. >> hundreds of people have been gathering at ground zero since the news of the death. the crowd cheered and some people climbed a pole to wave the american flag. a similar scene in times square where firefighters have also been joining in on the celebration. and a similar scene here in washington. hundreds of people gathered at the white house cheering and chanting. holly morris joins us now with more on that. holly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, allison. it was quite a scene here last night on pennsylvania avenue in front of the white house. take a look at these pictures because they really tell the story. thousands of people made the pilgrimage to the white house and many of them came before the president addressed the nation as the word had gotten out that osama bin laden had been killed. they were, like you said, cheering and chanting, they
7:08 am
were cheering usa, chantingous, singing god bless america all just overjoyed at what they said is obviously justice that is long overdue. well here we are this morning, not quite the same scene this morning, but thousands have dwindled to a few, but the few that are here are bursting with american pride, parading the american flag up and down pennsylvania avenue, passionate in joy that osama bin laden is finally dead. >> once i heard the great news, we had to come to d.c. for this. it was awesome. thank god that piece of garbage is dead. >> i'm here because i'm a washingtonain and i voted for president obama and i think it's time he got his due. he spent the last couple of years embattled and this is a significant achievement not only for him as a human being but for the entire nation that
7:09 am
he represents and for the whole world. obama got o soma. >> reporter: and they had the need to cheer because they wanted the president to hear first-hand their joy. back to you in the studio. >> holly, thank you so much. the council on american- islammic relations said this to say. we join our fellow citizens in announcing that osama bin laden has been eliminated as a threat. as we've stated repeatedly, osama bin laden never represented muslims or islam. in addition to killing thousands of americans he and al-qaeda caused the deaths of countless muslims worldwide. and we'll talk with a represent from there coming up in a few minutes. his terror network not only responsible for funding 9/11
7:10 am
attacks but al-qaeda is blamed for the 2000 attack on the u.s. cole and the 1998 bombings in africa. for more on the impact, we're joined by frank sal ua. thanks for coming in this morning. a lot of people have been celebrating the news. we're reminded after talking to family members, not so much a celebration but in an occurrence to mark what happened here. you've studied this for so long, what could happen, what should happen, what was your response? >> i've dreamt about this day for a long time and i'm with my family and four daughters were driving home from new york and we did stop by the white house. so not to necessarily celebrate but to mark the occasion.
7:11 am
and it is a significant blow to al-qaeda. it is by no means the end of the threat. the threat has met afta sized and it comes in various flavors and forms and it is a significant threat we must face but it is a momentous occasion. >> will there be a counter attack? >> they want to demonstrate the ability and whether it is one of the affiliates in yemen oral shab on in somalia, clearly someone is going to have to demonstrate a capacity to be able to continue their war. so, yes, i think that is a concern in the short-term and in the long-term it continues to be a concern. until we address theidyo logical issues we're going to get better at our tactics which are significant but we need to address the ideology that under pinned the al-qaeda narrative. >> was osama bin laden still running the al-qaeda network
7:12 am
and still involved in the operations or just a figure- head for the operation? >> he was largely at this point a figure head. but the only reason is because we put a lot of pressure on almost in the pakistan region, in afghanistan. terrorist need time and space. and if you look at it, it's ungovernorred -- ungoverned places where they can plan and engage in terrorist activities and we need to drain that swamp and look at where the next threat may emanate from. >> well for years and years people under the impression this was a man hiding out in waives in pakistan or afghanistan living in very rural areas and then the news coming out that he is living in this huge mansion in a very affluent suburb, some people say right under the noses of so many people that must have known he was there. talk about the lifestyle of osama bin laden and any surprise to you that he was found living in this type of
7:13 am
environment? >> sadly, not a surprise that he was in pakistan because he had a number of entities sympathetic to the al-qaeda cause. that said we need to work with pakistan to take the next steps in our campaign against terrorism. as to where his whereabouts have been since 9/11 for the past 9 and a half years is still illusive. it's great to know where his movement was but he did probably have a mixture of caves and found his way to pakistan where he had some support and that is a concern. >> we're going to learn more about it and still follow it. thank you, frank, with gw, good to have you here this morning. >> thank you. there are security warnings following the death of osama bin laden. the state department issued a travel alert and police departments are also on alert. we have more from sarah simmons live at the pentagon. sarah? >> reporter: well, allison, some local law enforcement agencies around the country in places like los angeles and new
7:14 am
york city have issued travel warnings, have beefed up security. they say out of an abundance of caution here. they have also issued travel warnings, the state department has, to people just out of concern for any kind of retaliation from al-qaeda over osama bin laden's death. now the u.s. officials have put all u.s. embassies on alert. the state department issued that travel warning, that worldwide travel warning after president obama gave his speech last night. specifically they are warning americans living or traveling abroad in areas that have been known to have anti-american violence in the past. as you know the bin laden compound was found in the middle of pakistan in an army town, a military analyst talked this morning about the security concerns that raises. >> we have a problem with pakistan. everybody is talking about it. this will highlight it.
7:15 am
they've got to do more to help. >> reporter: now los angeles and new york, they are putting security details in popular tourist attractions. we have tried to contact d.c. police this morning, still no word as to exactly what they are doing differently, if anything, here in the d.c. metropolitan area. but so far no information indicating that there is a specific threat that has been planned or any specific attack that is imminent. at this point they are saying this is out of an abundance of caution that they are stepping up security. that's the latest from the pentagon. back to you. >> sarah simmons live from the pentagon city metro stop. we have much more on our website at myfoxdc.com. just look for the links on the home page. we're going to get to tony perkins with a look at our forecast. it's now 7:15 this monday morning. >> we have a few showers moving through, including right outside of our studios here in northwest washington. light rain is being reported at reagan national airport as well. let's take a look at the satellite radar. we can show you the regions
7:16 am
where we're seeing that precipitation. it's moving through, moving from the west to the east. we've been dealing with this for the last two hours, i would say. and here you go. it is mainly light rain that's falling, although there are a couple of spots where the rainfall is heavier -- in particular down near the fredericksberg area. a frontal boundary making its way through here tomorrow. it's a cold front. it will drop our temperatures for tomorrow and trigger showers and maybe some thunderstorms tomorrow after and evening. so we're not worrying about that for today for our region. we are going to see plenty of clouds today. some sunshine will break out here and there later on. but our temperatures will be warmer than yesterday. right now it's 55 degrees here in the nation's capital. wilmington. 48 in boston. heading west to louisville -- i'm sorry, nashville, it is 70 degrees at this hour. temperatures behind the cold

7:19 am
other 3,000 victims of that day back. but it is in many respects a closing of a particular chapter in this large history book, so to speak, of the events of 9/11. >> as you move forward now, and i hear you loud and clear, closure is a very poor choice of words, but as you move forward from this day knowing that osama bin laden is now dead, is there anything to pass along to the viewers as someone who feels this perhaps a little more personally than we do? >> well, from a purely personal aspect, it's gratifying to see on the news and the like that there is now this reunification, so to speak, this unit and bond of the american public and the like. but as i just said a minute ago, we have to take this unity
7:20 am
forward and address the issues that we face now as a country. but for my personally, i'm glad in many respects that it's been done. it's's long overdue but then again it doesn't change the outcome. i am still without michelle, my children are still without their mother, and we, as a family, continue to just move forward. >> i think it's important that people remember that as we see these crowds of people calling this a di of celebration, that there is a huge human aspect to this and you are one who can make that clear for us. and before we let you go, you have been so instrumental in not only keeping michelle's memory alive but in trying to keep the focus on the people who were affected so much by this and we talked to you at the pentagon memorial unveiling, we've talked to you numerous times about the efforts you've done to try to do this. will that continue for you
7:21 am
personally now as we move forward? >> absolutely. with respect to the pentagon memorial, there are plans for a visitor center, there is a plan to keep the memorial going. it's not for just the families, it's for everyone and all to see, not just where it happened, but to remember and reflect on the events of that day. but as a foot note, michelle, for years, said you need to choose your battles and move on and get over it. she would tell me you have to get over it. and she would want me not so much to continue her legacy, but to move forward, not just for her because she gave so much of herself to others that it would be incumbent to not to emulate her life and help

the terrorist leader was killed in a sunday raid. pakistani intelligence officials say it happened at a mansion about 60 miles north of pakistans capital. his body was buried at sea. this morning there are concerns his death could set off attacks against americans, something the president did address last night. >> the death of bin laden marks the most significant achievement to date in our nation's effort to defeat al- qaeda. his death does not mark the end of our effort. there is no doubt that al-qaeda will continue to pursue attacks against us. >> and in just a few minutes we'll be live at the white house where huge crowds are turning out to celebrate the news. we'll see what the scene is there this morning. news of bin laden's death illicitting strong reaction from baseball fans in philadelphia. the phillies were playing the new york mets. the game went late enough for

them to hear the announcement and this is the response from the crowd. heard a lot of that, whether in new york city or in philadelphia or here at the white house where several thousand people gathered overnight. >> it does remind you, as our guest said earlier, the unification of americans rallying around something as we did for our nation when the 9/11 attacks happened and now this. so we've been using that word closure and that's a hard word i'm sure for families to hear, but for the rest of it, it does feel like this chapter -- we can move forward perhaps. so we'll have many guest this is morning talking about that very thing and what we should be looking out for now. dave ross was at the white house last night and he said that was perhaps the biggest part of it, was forget about political affiliation or anything else, last night everybody was one. and he said that's what was so resounding about what was happening. switching attention now to

weather. >> yes. some rain showers moving there through the area this morning. moving through the area as we speak and moving into the district and points eastward. let's take a look at the satellite radar composite we can show you across the area we're seeing rain showers moving at a pretty good clip now. moving out across the chesapeake bay into eastern portions of maryland and southern maryland, places like that. so the showers continue their march eastward. we do have a lot of clouds out there as well as the morning progresses. i think we'll see a little bit of sunshine here and there but we certainly have mostly cloudy skies. there is that system of rain. here is the other one. this is associated with a frontal boundary that won't get here until the latter part of tomorrow. now here is what is going to happen. tomorrow we'll warm up quite nicely. today will be warmer than yesterday and tomorrow warmer than today in advance of the front. but then once the front comes through it will likely trigger showers and thunderstorms and then usher in cooler air for wednesday. our current temperatures around the region, we're in the 50s

7:36 am
ex pound on that. >> obviously the threat of terrorism has not gone away with the death of one person. there is an ideology that used the faith of islam to kill innocent people and that's the idiology that has to be challenged. he was a symbol of this idiology, but the idiology remains. >> you'll be holding a news conference later in morning on the hill. what will the message be? >> well we're just repeating this message. because so often when american- muslims speak out against terrorist and religious extremism people say you don't do enough. every day we try and get the message out and let our fellow americans know we reject terrorism just as much as any other american and we have to keep repeating that message. >> in your statement that we have been reading this morning, you remind us that al-qaeda has also been responsible not just
7:37 am
for american lives but also many muslims. >> yeah, along with the thousands of americans killed obviously on 9/11 and other times, there is just uncounted numbers of muslims worldwide that have been killed and injured by al-qaeda attacks. >> we reiterated both president and bush statements that this was never a war with islam. when you hear that, what would you like to -- how would you like to further that, i suppose, for our listeners and our viewers? >> well we've always said that osama bin laden and al-qaeda never represented islam and muslims. they tried to say they represented islam but they didn't. so i think it's good that both president bush and president obama have re-stated that or made it clear in past statements. >> c.a.r.e. has come up with its own list of anti-terror initiatives and
7:38 am
ways to go about our business in our day-to-day lives. can you tell us about the initiatives and what is the message is from c.a.r.e. as america's largest muslim organization. >> it's the rejection of religious extremism, we've had television public service announcements with that message, we've had an online petition drive called not in the name of islam. we've coordinated religious rulings against extremism and so we're trying to do every day whatever we can to put the message out there. >> thank you for joining us today and again there is a news conference later today. we appreciate you joining us this morning. >> thanks for having me. 7:38 on this monday morning. we've seen strong reaction to the news of osama bin laden death in new york. large crowds gathering at world trade center and times square. we're going to find out what is

a raid in pakistan yesterday that came from direct orders from president obama. in the early morning hours bin laden was buried at sea following islamic tradition. hundreds of people have been gathering at ground zero in new york city since the news of bin laden's death. >> john hottie joins us from new york. we've seen thousands of people outside of the white house. crowds thinned this morning. what is the situation like there in new york? >> reporter: there were hundreds of people here last night when the announcement was made here at ground zero and earlier this morning. the crowd has thinned out quite a bit. but again, after the announcement, many people were i guess drawn here by a sense of american spirit and pride and celebration as well. we are at the corner of vesy street and church street which is the shadow of ground zero. you can see the construction going on there on tower one right now.
7:43 am
this was the scene of immense destruction and horror now almost ten years ago as we're coming up on the 10th anniversary of the attacks on 9/11. this morning, last night, it was a scene of celebration. a lot of people have left so far this morning but some folks remain, including those who came down here. while you see some of the video, folks chanting usa. among those in the crowd are servicemen and women. including this gentleman. tell them your name one more time. >> bill cortez. >> and you served with the united states marine corp. you had family members, correct, that died on 9/11. tell me about that and then also when you heard about bin laden's death and your reaction. but first what family members? >> i lost two cousins on 9/11. i had an uncle down here who was a firefighter for 35 years. we didn't know if he was alive or dead for two days before we found out he did survive. when we found out that osama bin laden was taken out, it was bittersweet. there is a bit of closure to it
7:44 am
and the excitement that we took out al-qaeda's number one guy. >> reporter: but we remain a nation at war so you say it's bittersweet, is that what you are talking about? >> certainly. the war from terror is far from over. this is progress. but it is far from over. we have a long road ahead of us. and afghanistan and iraq and now in libya, so this far is far from over. but i think this certainly strengthens the resolve of the american people and my brothers and sisters in arms overseas. >> reporter: we appreciate your service. thank you very much. definitely a sense of spirit and later there is going to be a more formal ceremony among family members of victims on 9/11 here at ground zero. that's the latest from here. back to you in d.c. >> thank you, john, we appreciate the update in new york. 7:44. let's get a look at the forecast here. it was raining a little bit ago? >> it's still raining to the

terrorism professions, we've made great strides in that effort. we've disrupted terrorist attack and strengthened our homeland defense. in afghanistan we removed the taliban government which had given al-qaeda safe haven and support and around the globe we worked to capture or kill scores of al-qaeda specialists including several who were a part of the 9/11 plot. yet osama bin laden avoided capture. and he escaped across the afghan boarder into pakistan. meanwhile al-qaeda continued to operate from along that border and operate through its affiliates across the world. and so shortly after taking office, i directed leon panetta, the director of the c.i.a., to make the killing or capture of bin laden the top priority of our war against al- qaeda. even as we continued our broader efforts to disrupt, dismantle and defeat

network. then last august, after years of pain-staking work about our intelligence community i was briefed on a possible lead from bin laden. it was far from certain and it took many months to run this threat to ground. i meet with my national security team as we developed more information about the possible security that we had located bin laden hiding in a compound deep within pakistan. and finally last week i determined we had enough intelligence to take action and authorized an operation to get osama bin laden and bring him to justice. today, at my direction, the united states launched a targeted operation against that compound in abbotta bad, pakistan. this kaz youried out with -- this was carried out with security and no americans were harmed. after a fire fight they killed osama bin laden and took

custody of his body. for over two decades, bin laden has been al-qaeda's leader and symbol and has continued to plot attacks against our country and friends and allies. death of bin laden marks the most significant achievement to date in our nation's effort to defeat al-qaeda. yet his death does not mark the end of our effort. there is no doubt that al-qaeda will continue to pursue attacks against us. we must, and we will, remain vigilant at hope and abroad. as we do, we must also reaffirm that the united states will not and never will be at war with islam. i have made clear just as president bush did shortly after 9/11, that our war is not against islam, as bin laden was not a muslim leader. he was a mass murderer of muslims. indeed al-qaeda have killed scores of muslims, including

our own. so for all that believe in peace and human dignity, over the years i've made clear that we would take action within pakistan if we knew where bin laden was. that is what we've done. but it's important to note that our counter terrorism cooperation with pakistan helped lead us to bin laden and the compound where he was hiding. indeed bin laden had declared war against pakistan as well. and ordered attacks against the pakistani people. tonight i called president zardari and my team had spoken with their counter terrorism parts and they agree it is a good day for both of ow our -- our nations and in going forward it is important they continue to help us against al- qaeda and it's affiliates. the american people did not choose this fight. it came to our shores. and it started with the senseless slaughter of our

citizens. after nearly ten years of service, struggle and sacrifice, we know well the costs of war. these efforts weigh on me every time i, as commander-in-chief, have to sign a letter to a family that has lost a loved one or look into the eyes of a service member who has been gravely wounded. so americans understand the costs of war. yet, as a country, we'll never tolerate our security being threatened nor stand i'dly -- idly by when our people have been killed. we will be true to the value that's make us who we are. and on nights like this one, we can say to those families who have lost loved ones to al- qaeda's terror, justice has been done. tonight we give thanks to the countless intelligence and counter terrorism professions who have worked tirelessly to achieve this outcome. the american people do not see

their work, nor know their names, but tonight they feel the satisfaction of their work and the result of their pursuit of justice. we give thanks for the men who carried out this operation, for they exemplified the professionalism, patriotism and unparalleled courage of those who serve our country and they are part of a generation who have bore the heaviest burden since that september day. finally let me say to the families who lost loved ones on 9/11. that we have never forgotten your loss nor waivered in our commitment to see that we do whatever it takes to prevent another attack on our shores. and tonight let us think back to the sense of unit that prevailed on 9/11. i know that it has at times frayed. yet today's achievement is a testament to the greatness of our country and the determination of the american

people. the cause of securing our country is not complete, but tonight we are once again reminded that america can do whatever we set our mind to. that is the story of our history. whether it's the pursuit of prosperity for our people or the struggle for equality for all of our citizens, our commitment to stand up for our values abroad, and our sacrifices to make the world a safer place. let us remember that we can do these things not just because of wealth or power, but because of who we are. one nation, under god, in dividable, with liberty and justice for all. thank you, may god bless you and may god bless the united states of america. and with that, again the president late last night at 11:35 or so announcing to the world that the leader of al-
