great. >> a quick look at the forecast. a some sunshine and maybe late day showers. but as tony mentioned, a lot the sunshine and cool temperatures. 51 now at reagan national. 50 in frederick. to the south and east at patuxent naval air station, 54. if you're going to the beach, ocean city 62. water temperatures still on the chilly side although it should be a decent weekend with temperatures in the upper 60s and low 70s this weekend. looking at our forecast going forward here, we have clouds out to the west and into kentucky and west virginia. some of those will get in here this afternoon so it will be a partly sunny afternoon. and a few scattered showers holding together into portions of ohio and kentucky. it is possible that we can sew a few showers around here -- could see a few showers around here and maybe a late-day thunderstorm as this is a cold front coming through. but out to the west, in chicago through the clearing, that gets in here through the start of the weekend and right now
9:01 am
tomorrow looks fantastic. partly sunny skies and afternoon shower possibility, a little warmer than yesterday, 72 the daytime high. more on the forecast coming up in a few minutes. tony and allison, back up stairs to you. more on the breaking news we mentioned a few minutes ago and the numbers are changing moment by moment. five more letters, five, containing the suspicious white powder have been found this morning. >> both federal and local investigators are trying to figure out who is sending them. sherry ly is live outside of lafayette elementary in northwest with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, allison and tony. letters with the white powder were discovered at 29 different d.c. schools yesterday. we were told by miss and the fbi there could be more letters out there and now we have that. the fbi telling us that five more letters, suspicious letters with white powder, were found at d.c. schools today.
9:02 am
and like the others, we're told its substance inside was harmless. we know two of the locations where those letters with found this morning. one of them at prospect learning center on f. street in northwest. another one at newton street northwest at bancroft elementary. the letters were checked and the schools have been given the all-clear. now those schools that were disrupted by the suspicious letters yesterday reopened on time this morning. no sign there was ever any trouble. school administrators discovered the suspicious letters yesterday morning with a white powder inside. parents were relieved to learn the substance was harmless and law enforcement say it was corn starch. the fbi sent the letters to quantico for testing. they have been linked to similar letters sent across the country. law enforcement sources say they were sent from texas and contained a reference to al- qaeda. but they did not have any specific threats. one parent said she didn't learn about it from the school,
9:03 am
but from her children and it's something others say is part of life these days. >> we face challenges, threats to lives every day, all over the place. so i try not to over react. somebody was being irresponsible but live your life. >> they told me there was a disturbing letter in the mail and it was suspicious and that they didn't know if school would be canceled, that type of thing. >> reporter: mail was stopped at schools and postal facilities checked for the possibility of more of these suspicious letters. and we now know that the total is now 34 schools that have received these letters in the district and we are told that, again, that suggests the possibility there could still be more of them out there. again, five more found this morning. the fbi telling us that, from what we understand, none of the
9:04 am
letters contained any harmful substances like the one found yesterday and those schools have been given the all-clear. tony and allison, back to you. >> they have to treat them like they may. thank you very much, sherry ly. meanwhile, the computer hardware and documents recovered from osama bin laden compound in pakistan are shedding even more light on al- qaeda and it's future plans for terror. we are now learning of sible plans to attack the u.s. rail system. intelligence officials believe they were supposed to coincide with the upcoming 10th anniversary of 9/11. sarah simmons is following the situation from our news room. >> reporter: tony, we are getting our first insight on the type of data officials were able to recover this weekend in pakistan. counter terrorism officials say as of february 2010, terrorists discussed putting obstructions on tracks causing trains to fall off a track at a valley or
9:05 am
bridge. al-qaeda planners said if they tilted the train, the plan what only succeed once because the tilting would be spotted the next time. the data is described as aspirational, meaning it doesn't appear there was a concrete plot in place. they believe the planning never got beyond the initial phase and have to recent intelligence pointing to an active plot for such an act. however as a precaution, homeland security is confirming, sending out a bulletin today, along with the fbi, to law enforcement across the country warning them to be on the lookout for clips or spikes missing from train tracks. also look out for packages on tracks or other suspicious changes. now other intelligence information gathered at the compound reveals a terrorist wish list and desire to hit the u.s. with a large-scale attack in major cities on holidays an an -- anniversaries. and there was a secret fbi
9:06 am
facility where spies were watching bin laden leading up to the raid. they say it was a safe house in abbottabad where the compound was located. spies did an extensive location over a period of months. tony. >> more information there. and we are learning more details about the raid that killed bin laden on sunday. this is just in, al-qaeda is confirming bin laden's death in an internet statement. also, the code name of the navy seals mission was operate neptune spear. only one of the couriers present was armed and he was killed on the first floor. the downed blackhawk helicopter with its valuable stealth technology is now in the hands of the pakistanis. military sources also say bin laden was apparently confused and scared at the time of the assault. he shoved his wife toward the navy seals. they then double tapped him, is what it's calledch one bell et fired in the chest, another in the head. he was not arms but was
9:07 am
reaching for guns within reach. an ak-47 and a russian made 9- millimeter semi-automatic pistol. now back to our top story. more suspicious letters found at area schools. we check in this morning with police chief cathy lanier. thank you for joining us. >> good morning. >> can you tell us about the move recent lentors found -- letters found at schools. >> we believed there would be more coming in today or maybe as late as monday. we started at 7:00 this morning responding and we've picked up four letters so far this morning. >> what have you learned about the letters from yesterday and what can you tell us about this investigation so far? >> well there's not much we can tell you. we've been referring all of the questions about the investigation and the letters recovered to the fbi. this is an active investigation so i don't want to comment on that. but i can tell you that i think that we're probably going to
9:08 am
see remaining -- the remaining letters that were sent, they will continue to come in. they are kind of in the system now, working with the postal inspector, we are trying to intercept as many as we can but we'll see some still showing up at the schools through monday. >> and schools are still open today now? >> yes. yes, schools are open on time. >> all right. i'm sorry, chief. go ahead. >> we have a plan in place to ensure the safety of the kids and the employees. we feel comfortable the way we have this set up that anticipating that additional letters will be found that we can intercept the letters quickly and secure them and get them out of the school. >> and before we move on, just again, initial tests from yesterday there is no harmful substances found? >> there is no harmful substances found at this point. >> and some of the intelligence found in the raid on the osama
9:09 am
bin laden compound included attacks on rail systems in our city and also cities like new york. can you tell us how concerned you are about these potential threats? >> well i think everybody in law enforcement community that has been working in this arena since 9/11, we've always known what the high value targets would be and i think we ramped up security around transportation nationwide and have had them ramped up for many, many years. so i think we're well prepared to deal with what are threats have come out of there so far. but we are working with the rail systems. both local commuter-type rail and nationwide rail. so fortunately those things are in place before this information came out. so we have some good experience here. >> and final question. security overall now in the days after the death of osama bin laden? >> well we're going to continue to do what we do. we have a pretty high level of security here any way in the
9:10 am
nation's capital. but we do have some additional things in place and they will remain in place for some time in the near future. >> chief, thank you for joining us this morning. an update on a deadly accident involving a car and dump truck in maryland. intersection of middlebrook road and route 118 is back open. it had been closed since 1:00 this morning. driver of the car was killed. police say the lights at the intersection were on flash mode when the crash happened. from the president to a local mosque. how many are working to educate the public about islam. >> we'll talk to the organizer of an event held by a local mosque about their efforts to inform its neighbors. don't go anywhere. we'll be right back. at 9:13 there is breaking news into the news room. riot police is syria fired on
9:14 am
peaceful protestor this is morning. so far six were killed. five in the city of dara. and the other in the city of huong. protestors was calling today a day of defiance. and they are rounding up opposition leaders. more than 600 people have been killed in protest since march. when we say we'll never forget, we mean what we say. >> president obama met with new york city firefighters from engine company 54 yesterday. the company lost 15 members on 9/11. more than any other new york firehouse. the president also laid a wreath at ground zero where the twin towers once stood. the event was low-key. the president did not speak, later he met with other first responders and some of the relatives of 9/11 victims. this morning the president is headed to ft. campbell, kentucky, to meet with the seal team that killed osama bin laden. president obama and president bush both made it clear that while we are fighting al-qaeda, we are not
9:15 am
at war with islam. and there is an effort under way to make sure that people understand that terrorists like bin laden do not represent muslims. joining us now is hussein goal with a local mosque for what they are doing to understand people's knowledge. this is a mosque well-known in falls church. before you talk about the event you have going on in weekend, in the wake of the death of osama bin laden, during this past week how have interactions and relations been between members of the mosque and the general public in that area? >> i just want to emphasize that osama bin laden was not any friend of muslim community. and that chapter fortunately is closed. and we are looking forward to build bridges with our community and come together. and this event is going to just
9:16 am
do that. >> let's talk about the event itself. because it's an effort to build bridges but it is also fairly unique. it gives people who are outsiders a chance to see what a mosque is like and had a happens there. it is an open house that takes place tomorrow. tell us about it? >> yes. our strength in this country is our diversity. and to get to know one another, that helps us to drop the fear and suspicion. and in order to do that, the best way of doing that is to experience the cultures that islam offers, its taste of islam. the food that we have have so many -- that we have from so many different countries. the art and architectural painting and the poetry of our youth and the music. and i think if our community and our neighbors come to visit us, get to know us, think it would help to come together and go forward. >> is this -- have you done
9:17 am
this before, had an open house before? >> oh, yes, many times. >> and we should say this hope house was scheduled a long time ago, not scheduled because of event this is week, but this has plan in planning for quite sometime. >> indeed. >> from 11:00 to 5:00 tomorrow. in general, obviously with tense situations with everything going on in the world and the middle east and the war on terrorism and all of that, there are sometimes tense times, but generally speaking over the last several years is it your sense that things have gotten boughter, that there has been better understanding? >> in some senses yes. in some areas, no. we have to be honest. but we have to make sure that we have the efforts to make sure that the fellow citizens get know the muslim community and find out we are a friend and we are working very hard to make sure that we have our community integrated in larger society. >> we have to mention this
9:18 am
because it was widely publicized at the heim. emaral whacky left the mosque and recruited terrorists and the like. and when that happened, did that make your mission about peace and explaining to people we are a peaceful people, did that make it harder. >> you cannot judge the whole mosque or community with one or two. we have 1.5 billion muslims in the whole world and about 7-8 million muslims in the world. i don't think it is fair to just pick up one character, one personality, and then integrate that into the whole community. i think that's why we've these events, for them to come and experience your neighborhood and the love that the muslim community has for a community and for the citizens. >> and that is the message that
9:19 am
you want to get out? >> indeed. >> well we'll put the information up again. the mask is located in falls church. open house tomorrow. really an extraordinary opportunity to go inside the mosque or a mosque and see what it's like in there, learn about the culture and sample some of the food as well. tomorrow from 11:00 until 5:00. thank you very much. >> thank you. i want to make sure you and your family will join us. >> we will certainly try to. >> we're looking forward to meeting you there and show you the tour. >> thank you. >> thank you very much. we do appreciate it. thank you for coming in. >> allison, back to you. >> tony, thans. coaching changes coming to yet another local university. university of maryland coach gary williams is retiring. details on that when we come back. and holly is taking a step back in time. holly, good morning. >> reporter: a big step back in time. all the way back to the late 16th century. if you are looking for historical fun, i have the perfect place for you. over the next five weekends we are live this morning at the lake anna winery in spotsylvania, virginia.

[ music ] all right, it's time for some week's ask allison question. that's me. and this one is a relationship question that we love getting. a viewer writes, how do you stop liking someone who isn't thinking about you? i went out with a guy a couple of times and i like him as a potential boyfriend but he seems to just want to be friends. thank you so much for asking
9:33 am
this question and rest assured here is what you can rest assured in, friend. you are not alone. we have all been there. to get a little bit more out of this situation because i wanted to know if they had gone out and i asked her about their history and he had recently moved to the area and although they did go out for a couple of time it's was like for brunch and lunch. the tone is friend ily. he asked about the city and different neighbors and where he should move. and she said he's funny and handsome and smart and you have the signs of a classic crush. settle on the friendship and don't waste your time thinking about how things could be. you know the way a guy feels about you by the way he asks and if he asks if you have a boyfriend or if you are married. if he's asking about great restaurants and not asking you to go with him, forget about it. and another question, because i thought this was we've gone out
9:34 am
romantically and what if he hasn't contacted me. >> that's what you thought? >> yes: because for that i say you give a guy two chances. if he doesn't call right away. because sometimes things happen and you can be hasty because you can be like i'm not waiting around for him to call. >> what are the two chances? >> on the phone. here is my story. >> call within a certain period of time. >> if you don't call within two weeks or so, if the guy doesn't call in a couple of weeks, call and maybe whatever happened. call once, call twice and then that's it. >> gotcha. >> this is my story. mark, my husband and i went out for a date and it was great and he didn't call me for two months. >> what was the story? >> he was dating people and he had to get things in order. and i called him and he said i was just going to call you. and ike like, whatever.
9:35 am
and i said did we break up? i didn't know we were dating. because i liked him and i wanted -- before i put it to bed i wanted to make sure i did everything i could. so my advice, ladies, twice, then take him out of your phone. and here is what you don't want, he sees you calling and it's like -- [ sighing ] and how many people do you think you like and they don't like you. >> sometimes they never know. >> so awkward. if you have a question you would like answered -- this is just a joke. we're actors really. >>s it's always just a joke. >> send it to ask allison. now american idol. you watched it last night. there is one fewer contestant. we'll talk live to lit -- the latest idol to get the boot.

9:40 am
with more. jacob, good morning. >> good morning, how are you? >> i'm doing well. how but how are you today? >> i'm good. i'm sleepy. but i'm good. >> but yet you still have that spiel on your face. we love to see it and we love to hear you sing. and you said last night that i got to share a little bit with america. america has fallen in love with me. i really agree with that. and what do you think your impact on the show will be, because you were very different from a lot of contestants? >> i think my impact is that i sang from a soulful place and that i sang from a place of love and hope. and i hope to give people that. i think people who heard me, i hope that's what they got. >> and you were very particular about the songs you sang and the image you put out there. and as a mom of little kids i that because it was a little more better than what we hear on the radio today. were you conscious of that? >> i do.
9:41 am
i grew up in church and i have a lot of friends that have children and i think it's important we watch what we say, because there are little kids watching me and looking up to me. there was a kid in the audience yesterday who had a big old sign and a drew a picture of me and the image that i put out there is something he can carry with him for the rest of his life. >> we do appreciate that. a lot of comparisons to the great late luther vand ross. how do you feel about that? is that okay to be compared to such an icon? >> it's both. it's sometimes too much. because it's big shoes that i can't fill and no one else will ever be able to fill. but i'm so humbled by the blessing to be compared to someone so amazing and great. >> when did you start singing because that voice and last night when you clowned the ending of the song until the show was over, that was phenomenal. when did you start singing? >> i started singing as a little kid around the house. i would watch -- well it wasn't dvd, it was vhs and singing
9:42 am
along with those and cd's and vinyls. but i don't think it hit us until about kindergarten. >> wow, 5 years old. we look forward to you on tour and all of the big things coming your way. >> yes. please check us out on tour and when my album drops, check that out as well. >> you know we will. jacob lusk. tank -- thank you very much. >> really a nice group on the show. >> and they seem very close. today we're traveling back in time to the late 16th century. holly is athe at the virginia renaissance fair with a preview of the historical fun and merriment when we come back. and you know his voice and face, comedian dave collier in studio with us. it's uncle joey. that was a lifetime ago. details are up next.

9:47 am
in fact we all still hang out. i was i've-chatting with stamos last night and i had lunch with laurie lock lynn. i had a barbecue on sunday. s it's all true. >> it's not true. >> you can't make that up. i suppose i could make that up. but we all still hang out. we're all still good friends. we became this dysfunctional family off camera as well. but it's great because we're all friends for life. so it's cool. >> when you do a show and i've always thought being a part of a successful sitcom has got to be great. it's a lot of work. but you do become a tight-knit group and it is like your second family. >> yeah, or you hate each other. we've always heard the story. they hate each other. don't go to that set over there. but it is very condensed, it's a heck of a workweek and we have little kids. mary kate and ashley were only 8 months old when they started

and wearing diapers. but so was i. no, that's a joke. but you know, it is a real grind and we did 192 episodes so people say do you watch the show? i've seen a couple of episodes because i have five days of memories for each of the 192 episodes. >> do you still feel like an unck toll mary kate and ashley? >> to all of the girls on the show. and we really kind of became their surrogate parents because they were around three crazy guys, me and john and bob for so much of their lives. like i said, it's great because we're all still great friends, it's part of your life. let's talk about the comedy thing because for a long time you stay add -- stay add way. a lot of comedians say if you step away, you have to tuneup again. is that what you have found? >> you get rusty. i took ten years off. >> that's a long time.
9:49 am
>> it was a long time. and when i got -- got back into it, i didn't think i could be good. i was bad fora -- for a while. and now everything is fun. i look forward to performing tonight and tomorrow night and it's a blast again. >> your comedy is clean. >> it is. >> and your part of something the clean guys of comedy tour? tell us about that. >> that's coming out in the fall and we're doing shows that you'll be able to go to movie theaters and purchase tickets and see the show live. and so we're going to be doing what is called the spazzism events starting up in august and we'll do one each quarter and it's all clean stup. i came up in the ranks of the tonight show and did my first tonight show back in 1984 and had you to be clean back then or you didn't get on to the tonight show which was the only show to be show cased as a comedian. and i never forgot that.
9:50 am
and many people have said thanks for doing a clean show but it didn't take a genius to figure out that funny is an iffy and you -- funny is funny and you don't need the f-bock. >> and you can work anywhere. >> leno said that to me. if you weren't clean, you wouldn't work. >> and you're doing an adult swim show. >> which is a little out of category for me. it's a show called the professor brothers and i play kind of this very reverent ronald reagan that comes back from the dead and has been hanging out with dead people. >> i may have to check that out. dave kylier performing tonight and tomorrow at the arlington cinema and draft house. you're a great guy and thanks for coming into town. >> my mom told me to say you.

9:53 am
this is mistress kelly's kitchen. we have an authentic wood-fired stove and oven and we show a young lady here making butter. we're going to make cheese. we're cooking some bacon this morning because mr. kelly cooks breakfast for the militia every day. but this is one of the things you can come and learn about every day at the fair. we have military matters you can learn naval exercises, you can learn to steer your ship. and of course this year's theme is why the new world? why did we come to the new world? who cares? well elizabeth cared. she cared a lot. and that's why this year we're going to talk about. >> reporter: and everyone is dressed in gash and activities going on. but what is it that is so fascinate being that time that it inspired a fair that goes on for ten years, during the renaissance was the beginning of the middle classes. it relates to where we are today. it was a complete resurgence of
9:54 am
art and music and science. science had become lost but now it was found. so one of the things we try and show here is how -- where you started from in the 1500s, now it applies to our everyday life. >> reporter: i want to get captain ed tillman in because he's talk about the militia. which is a big part of the fair. >> yes. and in the militia we teach all of the men of staffordshire and women, if they wish to learn, how to defend our beloved kingdom. we can show them how to swing a sword, handle a pike, try on armor and show us our various pole arms and show them how they were used. >> reporter: and you can come and do the different things and learn about it. back in the time all of the men had to be well versed in the militia. >> all men between 16 and 60 were required by law to be in the militia. >> reporter: thank you for coming out today and giving us a preview of what it was like
