caldwell. >> one woman is deceased and another woman and a man were taken to the hospital. both are in serious condition. at this point we believe that the situation was domestic in nature. although people knew one another and were somehow inner related with one another. >> reporter: and you can see fairfax county police detectives have been here all morning in the stairwell area outside of the apartment where the incident apparently unfolded. we don't know a great deal about the victims in this case. we know that all three are of asian decent and we know that all three are adults. other than that, they have not released a lot of information. even to tell us who lives here and who does not. we know at least some of the parties lived here, it's not clear whether or not they all lived here. but once again there is no search for suspects. they believe the incident was contained. one female is dead and a man and woman transported to the hospital suffering from stab wounds. reporting live, i'm stacy cohan, back to you.

now to some of the other stories we're following. a 12-year-old boy is recovering after being shot in the ankle in the district. it's one of two shootings in d.c. overnight. the 12-year-old was shot around 11:30 last night in the 3400 block of minnesota avenue southeast. investigators say the boy may have been a victim of a robbery. the other shooting happening around 3:45 this morning on 7th and l. near the convention center. a man was shot in the stomach in this case. no word on his condition. the trial for the woman accused in a deadly hit-and-run accident near dupont circle begins today. ryan tried to get into a car on connecticut avenue back in october. a witness gave officers a license plate number and officers traced that vehicle to davidson and arrested her at a friendship heights condo complex. she is facing a charge of voluntarily manslaughter.
9:02 am
the d.c. police officer accused in the death of a mother and child is in court today for a bond review. officer richmond philips is charged with murder. wine eta wright was found dead in hillcrest heights park last week. her 1-year-old daughter was found in her mother's car about a mile away. philips is the baby's father. he was due in court last week for a paternity hearing. our other big story today, we might finally see some truth to the series of bombshell allegations that grays the mayor first term. >> sulaiman brown is expected to testify investigating allegations that brown was promised a government job. sarah is here now. >> reporter: the man at the center of the alleged hiring improprieties in the gray administration said he can prove there is a money trail from vincent gray's mayoral
9:03 am
campaign to his own mayoral campaign. sulaiman brown said gray's people paid him to stay in the race and bad mouth then-mayor adrian fenty. brown said he was promised a city job once gray got into office. he did get that job and then lost it. when he testifies this afternoon he said he will show the committee several money orders from gray's people. he also said the fbi got dna from envelopes used to deliver money from gray's campaign. but even with all of that talking to us, it took a superior court judge to get him to talk to mary cheh. >> i'm sort of surprised by this because i had a conversation with mr. brown before the investigation began and he said he was very happy to do that, didn't feed a subpoena. >> reporter: campaign records show brown accepted for man $600 in cob trib august which came from howard brooks. some of the amortizations were misspelled but he said they
9:04 am
came from brook's son payton, also called michael, and payton's girlfriend and andrea naylor, said to be a relative of howard brooks. you can look for coverage today on myfoxdc.com and then on fax 5 news at 5:00. and another controversy dogging city hall now. the attorney general is expected to announce details of the investigation into harry thomass personal suv and who paid for it. the councilman said he used his own money to buy the audi suv from a company before he became a council member but there are questions about whether that company got a sizable payment from his campaign committee and whether the suv should be reported as a gift or income. we have a developing story in iraq this morning. military said five american troops were killed today. officials have not released details about where the
9:05 am
incident happened or how the five died. this is the single largest loss of life for the american military in iraq in the past two years. we are also getting record of several missile strikes hitting pakistan this morning. at least three were fired from u.s. drones, killing at least 16 people near the afghanistan border. meantime, the defense secretary is on his farewell trip to afghanistan. robert gates is retiring and on his last visit to troops he said he's worried they will be withdrawn from afghanistan too soon. he also said combat forces should be the last to leave so that they can maintain the offensive against the taliban. in yemen, there have been wild street celebrations since yesterday when the president left the country. president ali salay went to saudi arabiaar being wounded in a rocket attack on friday but there are conflicting reports about his return. the government said he's coming back and the vice president is now in charge.
9:06 am
but protestors are planning to form a temporary presidential council. president barack obama continues to defend his actions on the economy today. despite some discouraging news. >> the push comes after disappointing jobs numbers let to a selloff last week. doug luzader takes a look at what some are calling a jobless recovery. >> reporter: the president will continue to talk about the auto industry today. he'll argue that it's a bright spot, but the economy itself may be faltering. the markets weren't happy about the latest economic news but don't tell the obama administration that this is a jobless recovery. >> it is not a jobless recovery. that is an incorrect phrase. after the last recession in this comparable period, post- recession, we had lost 100,000 jobs. we've added more than 2 million jobs. >> reporter: but the position we're in still isn't pretty. the unemployment rate went up last week to 9.1% and the economy added just over 50,000 jobs in may.
9:07 am
to put that into perspective, when the president hits the campaign trail again for his re- election effort, if he wants the unemployment down to a still-high 8%, the economy will have to start adding jobs at four times the current rate every month. >> the white house is struggling to suggest that we have still in the hangover phase of the 2008 financial crisis that we had. i think the bigger question is whether or not we aren't seening the consequence of the white house policy. >> reporter: and the president returned to his auto industry theme today. last week he was at a toledo, ohio plant to tout his bail plan. over the weekend his media address was on the same topic and today he's granting a series of interviews to local television stations in the midwest to continue that drum beat and target those swing voters that he'll need heading into 2012. and the white house will have to change public perception. there is a new gallop poll out

9:13 am
first place. joining us with tips is mike resinski from life lock. good to have you. what have you brought with you today and i don't want to miss a thing when it comes to protecting our identity so i want to ask you what you have. >> i brought basic tools criminals use. at life lock we show how criminals are getting information. so by simple devices as skimming machines. you have a hand held device and one is blew tooth because we love technology, these two will capture hundreds of credit card and debit card numbers very easily. a flight attendant recently skimmed $500,000 using one of these on her daily route. so those two devices -- and this one is an encoder. this is what a criminal would use in their house if they had come across -- say you lost your wallet with your debit or credit card. they would use this device basically to capture the data
9:14 am
on that card and transfer it over to a white piece of plastic similar to this. now earlier, i did that, i took my credit card number and within a minute, my credit card captured all of the data on to this white piece of plastic, it could be a room key or anything like that and now you could go out and make purchases with this if i was nice enough to give it to you. >> where would a person get this? i know there is a whole criminal underground that i have no idea about, but how easy is this to get? >> it's really easy. the program that we use on our computer here was one that we found that was easily down loaded. the equipment here can be purchased online through craig's list and some other sites. the information is out there. criminals make it available because that way they are not breaking the law. but it is easy. can you buy a deck of 500 white cards for about $7. >> and you did this just to show how -- and what little time it takes to get all of your information. >> it's just a matter of minutes. and you have to understand,
9:15 am
people that are dealing in this crime, they have all of the time in the world. they either sell your data or copy it over and make purchases. the goal is to turn it into money. so they have the opportunity to get your social security, credit or debit card numbers they want to take that and turn it into cash as soon as possible. >> and the big question that we all want to know is what do we do? >> it comes down to education. understand this can happen to you. and then go and do the education possible to figure out what are my risks? do i put my debit card out there way too often? should i be using my credit card more? what do the devices look like in case i happen to see one. notice your atm machine, has it been tampered with. these are the types of things we're telling consumers because we're moving way too fast and we need to slow down to protect our information. >> i think that's when we learned about skimming. we had cased on the atm machine. how do we tell that, mike, when
9:16 am
it doesn't look right at our atm. >> in some cases you can tell because there is something sticking out of the atm or there may be some sticker on it that is cut off. so those are the things you need to look for. but if you guess a message from the atm that is broken, go in and report this to the bank. recently we had a speaking engagement if they had come across an atm machine that had been given the message out of service and asked them if they had reported it and none of them did. >> what is the quickest way to become a victim? so we don't become a victim? >> you know what, this is really one of the fastest segments of the crime across the country. but now we're starting to see the move away from credit and tarting to -- starting to see it in the tougher areas. you have people using your social security to open up your tax return or get medical treatment or even get a job. so where ever you are in the
9:17 am
united states, it's great that you are protecting your credit card, but moving away from it and maybe doing a gift card, but the thing is you need to really watch out for that social security number. >> there are a lot more interesting tips that you might not think about like mike was saying you have the right to follow your server to see how they handle your credit card at a restaurant or another place like that. >> you would think with the way technology has advanced that restaurants would have hand- held devices so when they come to your table, they can scan the card in front of you, but they don't. so what consumers need to know is they have the rights to walk with the waiter or waitress back to see where they are scanning the card and we encourage everybody to do it one time to get an understanding of how it's being done. >> a lot more information i'm sure on the life lock website. we're going to link the information we've talked about on our website to myfoxdc.com. thank you so much. >> thanks for having me. >> allison, thank you. and an update on the e-coli outbreak overseas coming up next on fox 5.

9:23 am
the american society of clinical oncology. good to see you, doctor. thank you for joining us. we appreciate. >> good morning. >> big headlines and exciting headlines really in the fight against various types of cancer. let's start with these drugs that may help prevent breast cancer for certain groups of women. these are, from what i read and from what i understand, these are not new drugs, necessarily, correct? >> yeah, the drug that we're talking about is one that has been used in the treatment of women who already have breast cancer and in an effort to try to help prevent the cancer from recurring. but it's being tested in an attempt to prevent the cancer from occurring to begin with in woman who we can identify as high risk for developing breast cancer and this trial showed that it does indeed help prevent breast cancer in these women. offering women an alternative to try to prevent cancers. >> this is for women whose genes may have them higher on
9:24 am
the list for possible cancer? >> yes, we have ways of scoring women who are at more than increased risk for the development of cancer and these are the women that we target to take a preventative therapy to try to prevent their cancer so we're not administering a drug that has some side effects to women who probably won't benefit from it. so we're targeting a population of women who are most at risk. >> are these drugs, do they have fewer side effects? >> well we're hoping it gives them an alternative. so different and somewhat less troubling side effects than some of the drugs that have been used for this purpose before. so again this provides a new alternative for women so they can discuss this with their physicians and decide whether they really can benefit from this drug. >> let's talk about melanoma. there are new drugs that have been developed that will, as i understand it, increase survival rates for those living with melanoma. can you tell me about that? >> this is some of the most exciting findings from our
9:25 am
meeting now. melanoma, when it spreads to other organs is a lethal disease and a disease where we haven't seen much progress in the last couple of decades. now we have two new agented reported here during the past year and at our meeting now which have been extremely affective in inducing response in patients and prolonging their survival. patients can get information about this drug from our website at cancer.net, targeting patients where they can find out information in lay terms and whether they would benefit from the medication. >> and are these medications available now or will they be available shortly? >> well one of the drugs has already been approved by the fda for patients with advanced melanoma. the other, which we reported on at this meeting, will almost special be approved by the fda in the next few toes -- few months or so.
9:26 am
we expect this to be available soon or now and for patients with less advanced disease. >> we are out of time. i know there are treatments in some type of lung cancers as well. thank you for taking the time to talk to us. we appreciate it. we'll put the information on our website at myfoxdc.com so people can get access to that. thank you, doctor. >> my pleasure. sarah palin being criticized for flubbing a big piece of american history but she is standing by her version of events. we'll hear that when we come back. and then the fox business network is calling this red ink week. the network will dedicate this week to uncovering how the government is spending taxpayer money. a preview when fox 5 morning news returns.

9:31 am
so this is our second go around. and late-week storms, we could use them and use some rain. and i have to be honest, our next best chance isn't until friday. so a dry week and hot out there into wednesday, thursday and friday. today nice start at 74 at reagan national. we're 70 in leonardtown. good morning, 72 in frederick. mountains were cool overnight. martinsberg is 73 at the moment. 73 in winchester. so a nice start to the day. we'll add 10 degrees to the temperatures. so low to mid-80s for afternoon highs. a lot of sunshine expected, winds out of the north and high pressure off to the north and west and that will dry out the atmosphere. a thunderstorm passing along the bay during the overnight hours and that's about it. look at how quiet it is. not a lot going on out to the west. and high pressure off to the north and west will keep us nice and dry for the next several days. there is a look at the forecast. and notice the area of high pressure moving overhead tonight and then off shore during the day tomorrow. and it's going to set itself up as the old bermuda high and
9:32 am
once that happens into the day tomorrow and tomorrow night winds shift out of the south and we get return flow and that means hot temperatures around here. so wednesday, thursday and friday, right back into the mid to upper 90s. i would expect we'll see heat advisories around here by the middle of the week. 84 and nice one today. a lot of sunshine and warm afternoon. it should be dry, you have softball or soccer practice, that kind of thing later tonight. no problems. that should go on without a hitch. winds out of the north and 5- 10. and then later tonight, mostly clear skies, mild overnight and 66. a relatively cool night and then here come the 70s with the 90s. here is your five-day forecast. 89, 90 tomorrow or close to it. and then mid to upper 90s on wednesday, thursday and friday. overnight lows in the mid-70s. yuck. that's a look at the weather forecast. tony and allison, back to you at the desk. former pennsylvania senator rick santorum announced he's seeking the gop nomination for president vowing that, quote, he's in it to win.
9:33 am
he is a favorite among his party social conservatives accused president obama of having a weak foreign policy. he's expected to be at next monday's debate in new hampshire. sarah palin is defending the history flub he made in boston. when asked about paul revere, she said the ride was to awarn the british and americans ahead of battles. but he alerted americans to impending british attack. here is what he said. >> he warned the american that's the british were coming and they are going to try to take our arms and we have to make sure we are protecting ourselves and shoring up all of our ammunitions and firearms so they couldn't take it. but remember that the british had already been there, many soldiers for 7 years in that area. and paul of paul revere's ride and it wasn't just one ride, he was a courier and a messenger,
9:34 am
part of his ride was to warn the british that were already there, that you're not going to succeed and take american arms or beat our own well-armed persons, individual private militia that we have. he did warn the british. >> palin said she's still on the fence about making a run for the white house. one very hot topic in the race for the white house is the state of our economy. the american government and the american taxpayers now drowning in red ink. how long and will we ever get out of this economic downturn that we are in? liz clayman with the fox business network joins us now from new york. good morning, liz. >> good morning, allison. what we decided to do here at fox business with red ink week was to figure out where all of your money is going. this is simple. there is so much red ink when it comes to spending at the u.s. government level and we
9:35 am
don't want to sound like what you've heard in the past, oh, there is pork. this is not pork, this is big picture. we have reporters dig in and all week long we're going to point out where $83 billion of your taxpayer dollars have gone in questionable irs payments to things like tax payments. it's free money for people and it's questionable because it's rife with fraud. and we're looking at gm which was floated by your taxpayers. they are going to have a shareholder meeting and that's tomorrow. we have a reporter there looking to make sure not so much that well they got our money. fine we saved a lot of jobs there. but what are you doing with the money? have you changed your bad management ways? we want to know our money isn't going to waste. uncle sam is swimming in red ink.
9:36 am
did you know that $2.2 trillion of tax money is coming in but 4.23 in spending is going out. that's a big discrepancy. we have to stop the spending and figure out where it comes and not the little stuff that we've heard people point out in the past, it's social security, medicare, medicaid, defense and nondefense. 6% of our entire budget is going to service the debt that we have just to pay the interest on it. isn't that frustrating. when you see in your own household on paying too much interest, i'm going to pay off the whole loan, that's what we should be doing. so clearly there is so much we are able to point out to viewers all week long starting every day on fox business. of course starting at the market hours and through the entire day so we encourage you because it is your money. >> we will be watching. thanks so much for telling us about it. >> your welcome. >> very good. do you know what a lappie is? it's one of the -- >> i don't.
