movie and music and photos the i-cloud. according to the end urogroup, it's a big deal and the new service is much more than an up braided version of iphones. >> this opens up for music and media streaming. the out yeah you can get your -- the idea you can get your stuff anywhere you wantd it and it wouldn't have to be on the device itself. >> reporter: but some analysts say its jobs attempt to redefine the digital hub with another attempt to succeed in an area where apple has failed. but if the i-cloud is successful, apple may prove it can compete with similar offerings from amazon and google. and the i-cloud wasn't the only announcement today. the tech giant also unveiled the next version of the company's operating system for the iphone, ipad and ipod and it's 8th version of the mac operating system. we're watching your money at the fox business network, giving you the power to

germany which is where the outbreak is centered. the 2200 people sick with the bacteria are in europe but official there's are no closer to identifying the source more than one month after the outbreak. first they thought cucumbers from sprain and then bean sprouts from germany. neither were true. two wildfires continue to rage out of control in arizona. the wallow fire in the east is now growing to 365 square miles. dry and windy conditions are likely to make things even worse as it marched north. more evacuations were ordered in resort towns. this is the third largest wildfire in that state's history. investigators believe an abandoned campfire sparked the blaze. another wildfire burning to the south now covering 163 square miles. it is 7:27 right now. he has made serious allegations against vince gray and now former mayoral candidate sulaiman brown finally went before d.c. council and we'll

7:31 am
7:31 right now. don't be shocked if you see this on the highway. a cool sight. the plane that landed in the hudson river two years ago is about to land at its new home but it needs help via truck. the u.s. airways plane will continue it's traveled through maryland today and head into west virginia on the way to the carolina's aviation museum in charlotte, north carolina. the wings were shipped separately to the museum so the plane is on the back of a big flatbed truck. many people have been watching the journey. the entire plane is scheduled to arrive by saturday. how quickly we get off topic this time of morning. >> here is what i don't
7:32 am
understand, how is it navigating like ramps on to highways and stuff like that. >> well a -- a flatbed would do that any way. >> they said they did have to modify the route. >> maybe that's why it's going into west virginia. >> i think that's to avoid the interstates. but they did have to do that in philadelphia. >> they worked it out. if that plane can land safely on the hudson it can get across the country safely. don't worry about it. >> i know they've worked it out but i don't see how -- >> the hudson river is wider than our interstate. >> if it was on a river -- >> it will get there. it's the miracle plane. the fuselage will make it. >> the miracle. >> don't even worry about it. >> it's going to the miracle museum.
7:33 am
>> it's a museum full of miracles. >> don't ask me. let's look at temperatures throughout the region. >> who sang that song? >> chocolate something. >> that was the part that leads into tony perfectly. >> you guys are easily distracted. we keep on going right by it. hazy, hot and humid and 70 degrees right now. 70 in annapolis. 64 in baltimore. 63 in manassas. your satellite radar composite, we have a few clouds coming through. main thing that we are looking at, tucker barnes and i are keeping our eyes on this system up to the north. it is hanging together pretty well, coming down across pennsylvania and it is moving towards the mid-atlantic. why? because we have this big area of high pressure. it's working around that high pressure and it is heading towards us. so we're going to have to watch this. we have put in the chance of some thunderstorms in here for later on today. we'll have to see if we have to increase that chance as that
7:34 am
gets closer. it has shown a lot of lightning and thunderstorm activity while it was across the great lakes and canada. here is your forecast for today. code orange air quality alert in effect. a mix of sun and clouds. some isolated thunderstorms are possible during the late afternoon and evening hours. 91 degrees for your high. so a warm day. then for tonight, a warm night as well with your overnight low in the 70s in town. 60s outside of town. a few thunderstorms during the evening hours. five-day forecast, if you think today is hot, wait until tomorrow and thursday. tomorrow, upper 90s. thursday almost 100 degrees. chance of thunderstorms then. and that is how we finish the week. 86 on saturday. that's a look at the weather. now let's get more on the rush hour traffic from julie wright. >> so is it going to be hot enough for you? >> oh, please. >> i hear that so much. >> i was going to say, you don't you hear that. you keep talking about people
7:35 am
asking about spring. do you get that? >> yes, i get that a lot. >> and sterling at right lane, in the backup, another crash at stanton tieing up the left lane, so tieups into southeast washington. 295 slowing at the beltway. outer loop is no change. below speed from college park into silver spring. also checking for a crash at 29 at university boulevard in four corners. in virginia 395 leaving duke street toward seminary road. traffic slowing again at boundary channel drive over the 14th street bridge. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. well two scandals rocking the district right now. former mayoral candidate sulaiman brown is making some serious allegations against mayor vince gray and his administration. and now councilman harry thomas, jr., under investigation, accused of misusing d.c. funds. and mary cheh is here, thank
7:36 am
you for coming in today. and let's talk about sulaiman brown first. you are the chair of the committee looking into the hiring practices. and when we watched it was hard not to just shake your head and say what is going on. so let me ask you, what is going on? >> well as the chairperson of the committee for government allegations there were allegations beyond sulaiman brown that there were improper and irregular hiring practices in the early day of the gray administration. that people were put into so- called accepted service positions that you don't have to go through a competitive process without proper vetting, that salary is too high, issues about possible nepotism, cronyism. and as head of the government operations committee i felt it was my obligation for the council to look into these things which started the hearing. they were sort of expanded by the more explosive charges of mr. brown. mr. brown has said that he was
7:37 am
paid money and promised a job. that's the connection to me. and he was given a job for $110,000 as a special assistant to a director of the offices -- i mean the agency of health care finance. so i've looked into this extensively and i wanted to have mr. brown there because he -- as i said, made the most dramatic charges. now, some have described this hearing yesterday with him, hi to get him there kicking and screaming. he initially said he would come voluntarily. i accepted that when we had a conversation. he did not show up. i had to get a subpoena. he evaded the subpoena which he denies but i had to serve him via mailing prose. and then he still wouldn't come. hi to go to court and get him an order to come. that was the consequence of yesterday coming under court order. >> he comes in and said he has a sun glass and he said that is his first amendment right to
7:38 am
wear the sunglasses. it is so off-putting that one council member refused to say anything to him. what was your take on that? was that a personal stand? he said his eyes looked tired for the cameras. >> well he has said so many things. one of the thing that's makes his testimony is problematic is he undermines his own credibility with his behavior and answers. he had selective memory and things he would remember that he said quite vividly happened this way and then two days later i would ask him questions about what happen and he had no recollection of it. the whole performance was one that leaves you, frankly, questioning his credibility. >> but yet he has the money orders, said that on one occasion then-candidate gray was at a location, he didn't hand him an envelope but one worker had something for him that had money orders in it. >> those kind of charges are very problematic because he's
7:39 am
saying what they said. and when you get into a he- said, she-said, that gets difficult. the committee looking at testimony of other people, i'm fairly convinced that for whatever reason mr. brown was promised a job by someone in the gray administration. perfect gray said it was only an interview. some people said it would be consideration for a job. he wasn't promised a specific job but i think the message to him was that he would get a job. the gray campaign people said he was such a pest that finally, to get him off of the mayor's back, they found a job for him, that's what the chief of staff said. the money part of it is unclear to me. there are these three money orders from somebody connected to a man called howard brooks who worked for the campaign. but they don't amount to the kind of money he's talking about. they don't come in circumstances that lend
7:40 am
themselves necessarily to being paid off. and then he didn't declare any other monies nor does he account for them in any way. so that part of the story has too many holes to be -- to have any certainty to it. >> so let me ask you then, what happens now? because surely the people of d.c., this isn't going to go away and nor will it with the council. so what happens now? >> this is a legislative hearing and my goal is to find out what made this possible and whether there is legislative fixes and i can tell you right now that this so-called accepted service where about 200 people in the government can be put in positions and given salaries, that's going to stop. there will be legislation. i'm going to look at personnel system and the whole business about the salary and the vetting, we created a situation or the situation was there that would allow this sort of mischief to occur. so in terms of what this has done, it opened a window into that possibility. and so there will be something that will come out of this
7:41 am
legislatively. >> i'm out of time. the council chair will look into allegations against harry thomas. would you like to know what your reaction to that is or what have you to say on that? >> i have looked at the complaint. it's very distressing. the allegations, if true, are very serious. and the thing what mr. brown and the hiring and now with mr. thomas, what most sadens me is it saps the spirit of the district of columbia. we're going in the right direction, we have so many good things going for us. we have so many things that we have to attend to. all of these things, they are more than just distractions, they are points of great disappointment. >> wish we had more time to talk. hope you'll come back as these things all work themselves out. this is council member mary cheh of ward 3 in the district. steve, over to you. phase 8 of the 14th street bridge project begins overnight and that means a change for
7:42 am
tomorrow's commute. and we'll let you know what to be aware of coming up. and also going to check the roads with a view of the aforementioned 14th street bridge. and tony perkins coming up as well. stay with us. we're back after this. yefrouewti o?c,3@ñp aapú

7:45 am
7:44 right now. look who is back. it is tony. >> hello. >> looking dapper as always. >> why, thank you. i try my best. i have to compete with you two. >> i like the pinstripes. >> the bold look. >> much like the forecast. >> yes, it is bold. let's take a look. it is bold and it's hot. right now, not too bad. 70 degrees here at reagan national. dulles international, bwi marshall is 64 degrees at each of those locations. so not a bad start to the day really. let's take a look at future cast. here is what we think will happen later on today. i'm not sure the future-cast is holding the precipitation up to the north because it is not showing it. but it is showing the cloud
7:46 am
cover. showing the possibility of showers and thunderstorms popping up later on. we'll see. i do think there is a good chance of that happening and i think as we continue to watch, the actual radar images of the thunderstorm activity are occurring early this morning up to the north and west that increases the likelihood. high today about 91 degrees. some thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening. tomorrow very hot, 97 degrees for your high. thursday, 99 degrees, scorching with possible thunderstorms. friday a few thunderstorms late. saturday it will be cooler and 86 degrees. that's the latest on the weather. more coming up in just a little bit. >> stormy weather. >> yes. >> we listen to everything you say, tony. >> okay. >> the pictures say it all. >> you say that while you're looking at him. checking in with julie
7:47 am
wright. it's your turn now. >> huh? what? somebody talking to me? i am mesmerized by tony's pinstripes. i do like the outfit. it is very nice. >> thank you very much. on the roads, outer loop leaving new hampshire toward georgia avenue, all lanes are open. we do have some delays on the inner loop past university boulevard. it is all part of a long-term construction project. the road has been narrowed and the lanes are more narrow and you are finding delays on inner loop between university boulevard and new hampshire avenue other the northwest branch. on the other side of town, 66 congested. toll road congested through reston but the lanes are open. inbound new york avenue leaving bladensberg road headed for the third street tunnel, no accidents to report. suitland parkway still tied up at stanton and again at first sterling. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. 7:47 and a heads up for drivers who take 395 into the city. another phase of the 14th street bridge bridge project
7:48 am

him in the upcoming presidential election. if held today, the president and former massachusetts governor mitt romney who be in a dead heat. romney just announced his candidacy last week focusing on creating jobs and boosting the economy. the president does lead five other candidates. and yesterday former pennsylvania senator rick santorum wants to protect american freedoms under a threat from president obama. joining us with more on that campaign and what is happening with anthony wiener, steve from roll call joins us. and you said the news conference yesterday is shocking since he denied this for so long leading up to it. >> i'm still shaking my head. i think you rarely see a level of honesty in politic that's reaches that level. not only did he admit that he lied last week about sending one photo to one woman, he said it's been six women over three
8:22 am
years. so i mean, just shocking developments in a story that will clearly have some legs here. >> what will happen now? the way that you look at it i guess you could look at two things, one, like you said, the honesty that he admitted to doing this and part of what he admitted to is lying as wellch he said he doesn't want to step down. but now you have the question of this is somebody who did lie even though he came clean later. is that the kind of person that you want representing you? what will happen here? >> exactly. nancy pelosi yesterday called for an ethics investigation. other house democratic leaders say the same thing. i think that gives democrats some political cover going forward. once the investigation starts, no one can talk about it, it's secret. so that will buy them some time but i think nationally anthony wiener has done incredible damage to democrats who were just starting to get momentum. we saw special elections last month in upstate new york, democrats pulled off a shocking upset victory there. that message about republicans
8:23 am
going after medicare was resonating with voters. all of that now is kind of taking a backseat to this scandal involving a relatively high-profile house member. >> so democrats need to cover themselves here. republicans, do they need to say anything or do pictures speak for themselves in this case? >> i think the pictures do speak for themselves but we're already seeing some republicans start to put out statements. and right now they are questioning campaign donations. wiener is a big donor and very active and so any democrat who has taken money from anthony wiener will see a press release sent out to their home town papers this morning and will have tough questions to answer. so i do think whether or not he stays and ultimately resigned is still very much up in the air. >> he comes from a heavily democratic area in new york. so there would be a -- we could probably say there would be a good chance he would have support among his home base. but if he had bigger aspirations, this is a guy tabbed as a potential future mayor of new york city.
8:24 am
does that go away now? >> yes. i think it's pretty tough -- it will be pretty tough for him to launch any sort of campaign inside new york city. now i haven't seen the cover of the new york post this morning but i can only imagine that it's devastating. and local voters read that and it won't be forgotten. his credibility is shot among the greater new york city area. he could probably be re-elected to his congressional seat because that area is dominated by democrats, but mayoral campaign is a completely different ballgame and i think that's out of the question at this point. >> and let's look bigger. and move on from wiener to presidential politics. we just talked about the presidential approving rating and the latest throw their hat into the ring is rick santorum. does he have a shot here and does he bring anything different to the table than any other folks at this point? >> tough to say. he has a real strong shot. but interestingly, we talked about mitt romney being overshadowed in new hampshire
8:25 am
when he announced last week by sarah palin. poor rick santorum -- it's a terrible day to announce that you're running for president with the wiener scandal going on. but that said, it does bring a different set of values. social issues are his sweet spot here. we don't have a candidate in the race. mike huckabee decided not to run. so there is not a candidate as passionate about those and as outspoken on those issues, gay marriage, abortion as rick santorum. that said, he's out of politics since 2006 and lost by 18 points in his home state and he admits he probably couldn't win pennsylvania again in a presidential -- in a contest, so it's hard to say that it's anything but a steep climb for him to get into the race. >> do you think that type of issue, that he is standing for and campaigning on right now, can hold a voter in 2012 or is this election going to be strictly economy-based? >> it all depends on the next 9 months, i think.
8:26 am
unemployment right now is at 9.1. if it gets down in the 8 range and there is a real strong sign of a recovery, i think the focus could shift a little bit. but right now it seems all about the economy. unfortunately for guys like rick santorum. >> steve peoples with roll call. thank you very much. 8:25 on this tuesday morning. and half of all marriages will end in divorce. the author of marriage confidential joins us to look at this problem and what couples can do to stay together. and later we are live at the afro-brazil fest that is now underway. stay with us. fox 5 morning news will be right back. man: we need a sofa. something i can stretch out on! woman: ooh... that will go with those lamps my mother gave us. or we could get some new lamps. or we could get no sofa.

been a year. but we're talking about long marriages and we've seen high profile people fall victim to this very same thing. we're going to talk about that -- talk about that in a minute. but i want to talk about the titles. it is called marriage confidential, the post romantic age of work housewives and rebel couples. what is the work housewife? >> the work housewife is the exhausted breadwinner to her husband. this is the difference than the stay at home dad by pulling his load and helping with the children. the woman feels very tired of her job but can't leave the job because the husband is pursuing his dream. usually it is a financially stressed dream. so he wants to be a novelist or a poet. >> a tom sawyer husband. >> exactly. he's convinced to paint the fence and do the hard work and bring in the paycheck. >> and we love our kids.
8:35 am
that is not what anybody is saying. i don't want to put words in your mouth. but you talk about the royal children syndrome. what is that and how do kids play a big role in these marriages? >> kids can really slide a marriage from happy into semi- happy, high functioning but semi-stable. when i was growing up kids had their world and parents had theirs. this morning there is the helicopter parents, the hyper parents and the parents who are pouring everything into parent hood. and that is good in a way. but it can also really stress a marriage and the marriage kind of ends up getting swallowed just by parenthood and then the children are the focal point of all family life. >> that is true. the kids table. we sat here and had our adult conversation and they had a good time at the end of the day. let me ask you, because our time is so fleeting, how do you take a marriage like this and push it back into the -- not
8:36 am
just married and doing well, but the happy stage? did you find some solution? >> i did. this is not an advice book, but i d. one thing is that forever is a long time. so if you want to have a really long-term committed relationship it does pay to be flexible. so that might mean revisiting your marriage vows. i interviewed a couple that did that and they re wrote their marriage vows to keep them fresh for real things happening in their lives. and that's a small and useful habit to keep it vital and not just high-functioning. >> i'll ask you to put your journalist cap on for a second. we're running the story today about the congressman who has made, as he would say, a big mistake in his marriage. talking about the online emotional cheating. and you see this in your research. you can talk about that and women also play in that. >> right, women are doing this as well. the infidelity gap is closing faster than the wage gap.

this is a new-fangled post romantic affair and i call it the avatar affair. it's never physical contact, it's all message based, text based, maybe a change of pictures. in britain last year one in five divorces mentioned facebook. so this is a new kind of infidelity that challenges our deaf is -- our ideas of infidelity as well. >> and it is called marriage confidential. the post romantic age of the work horse wife royal children, under sexed spouses and rebel couples. there is more. i love it. thanks for being here today. good luck with the book. >> thank you. >> steve, over to you. on this tuesday morning, good news out of montgomery county schools and we'll have that when we come back. and then next hour we'll take you behind the scenes of the new avatar exhibit that will soon be touring the country. stay tuned for that.
