nightmare is over, she suffered for four years for a crime she did not commit. >> i think we are all a little numb and shocked, and ecstatic you know,. knox is now headed to london where she will board a connecting flight to her home seattle. today jury selection begins in the trial of the underwear bomber. >> it is being held at u.s. district court in detroit. stacy cohen is live with details. it is one of the most high profile terrorism cases in the u.s. since the attacks of september 11th, 2001 the so called underwear bomber will have his day in court. the 24-year-old nigerian is facing multiple charges in connection with the failed 2009 christmas day bomb plot. he hid chemicals under his clothing in hopes of blowing up northwest flight 253 coming from amsterdam, u.s. attorney's office is said to have a mountain of evidence including witness testimony and

her lawyers argued she was insane when she tossed the 2- year-old from the sixth floor walk way at tyson's corner last year. alison the hunt is still on for two men who held up a restaurant and customers in maryland. it happened just before 9:00 p.m. sunday night at friendlies in glen bernie the two masked men ordered everyone to the floor and robbed them they took money from the restaurant's register when one customer resisted he was stabbed. >> i have a 1-year-old we get ice cream all the time. >> they lucky i wasn't in there it would have been like iraq like some serious stuff going on to where so they wouldn't have took over nothing with me with no knife. okay. the customer stabbed is expected to survive detectives hope to talk to some witnesses who left the restaurant before officers arrived. a college student from gaithersburg charged with drunk driving and killing a classmate

in vermont. on -- vermont. on saturday night he was at a party with dozens of students from norwitch university he left the party with 18-year-old renee robins from michigan driving home, his car crashed into a tree, robins was killed. he left the crash scene but was later arrested. >> thieves are stealing copper from homes in prince william county. police are launching investigations to find them. there has been a spike in copper theft recently they are taking piping from bathrooms and laundry rooms in some cases, it caused water damage several houses were empty that making them a prime target. these recruits will be the newest members of the dc police force. they were welcomed to their first day at the police academy yesterday the training will last 28 weeks recruits are starting their work the same time the district has seen big results reducing murder by 15% over the last year.

this is our third year with dramatic reductions in homicides we have focused the whole department on very specific things we thought were driving homicides and it is working. police department aims to have 3900 officers by this time next year right now there are 3800 officers on the force. follow up to an ongoing investigation into possible cancer clusters at fort dietrich health authorities determined the number of cancer cases reported near there between 1992 and 2008 was not higher than the rest of the country but at least a 20% spike in lymphoma compared to the rest of the state. >> it is important to understand we did not see a difference even in lymphoma with the rest of frederick county what we did see was lymphoma in that area, and probably by extension, in the rest of the county as welcome

well, the circulator is expanding the local dc bus service added a new route that takes passengers across the river, it runs from the potomac avenue metro station to sky land and good hope marketplace shopping center. passengers with a smart trip card can travel from sky land to any where in dc, for $1. mayor grey says the new route will help connect residents in areas where unemployment is high to job opportunities. in time and on budget, that is the word on construction of metro extension to dulles airport. even if the project is behind the washington airport's authority says there is plenty of time to catch up. sherry lee reports. taking shame between the high-rises -- shape between the high-rises at tyson's corner the first phase of the dulles rail line it is more than half complete now warning signs of potentially costly delays, progress report by fairfax county's auditors show the

saying, these victories, and they are victories, the killing of osama bin laden and him are victories but don't mean al qaeda 's defeat is imminent why not? >> we have under estimated the resill gypsy of the network the point -- resill yenisei of the network when you lock at a network and what a loss of a critical leader does to it impact is not that great you have people waiting in the wings to replace them now he was particularly important to al qaeda, the yemen branch of the organization he was unique in the fact that he spoke english flew wently he had a unique appeal appearing in a dozen terror plots this doesn't mean the network will collapse there will be someone who steps in to fill his role. has al qaeda intentionally set themselves up in this way

where they are come part mentallized and diffused so when one of these people is struck down it has some impact but protects them to some extent. >> absolutely yes there is -- this great thesis that was written at the school of advanced military studies that looks at this issue and it describes them, its terminology as being clan december stein those are big -- clandestine, those are big syllable words but you have different nodes not connected to each other if one is destroyed it will not mean other nodes other parts of the network also get destroyed. you can get information that leads you to another people part of the network we certainly got that from the raid that killed osama bin laden but they have structured their organization in such a way it can survive and be under ground even if a top leader ends up killed. are our intelligence forces

i assume they are aware of this we have heard talk of this so they are aware but are they developing strategies to combat al qaeda, since its shaped in this way? >> they are aware of it and i think we have gotten better over the past decade but when you look at the top proclamation coming out of cia and others, about how this is a network on the verge of defeat this makes me thing they are under estimating its resill yenisei this is what happened back in 2001 to 2004 or 2005 after the safe haven in afghanistan, al qaeda previously enjoyed was destroyed a number of top leaders were captured and killed prompting the same proclamations of what we are hearing today. it could be we are have gotten a lot better at understanding the network but i think we have not fully gotten around our heads to how a network adapts to when it is structured in this way

>> it seems to me we originally -- the war on terror, that is a hard thing any way because it is not a war against a particular state or country, it is a group and individuals who want to commit terrorism particularly against the u.s. and western allies but when you add in the fact that a group like al qaeda has put itself together or developed in such a way, there have to be fundamental shifts it would seem to me in the way you thing about combating a group like that or organization like that. >> also fun mental shifts in the way we thing about victory victory in this case will not be disruption of every single person sympathetic to that ideology or every single person who would wish to under take terror attacks you cannot reach a point where there is zero risk of terrorism but looking at how to eliminate it as a strategic threat an

everywhere right now any where from 5, i should say 3 to 8 miles per hour sustained winds that will change into the course of the afternoon a ridge of high pressure building in departing low pressure system one that gave us the rain and clouds yesterday and course of the weekend between the two of them we have a tight pressure reading that means it will cause the winds to pick up a little bit we could see gusty winds into the course of the afternoon hours just be prepared, here is what is happening jet stream dipping a little bit to the north and that is keeping cooler air over new england we on the other hand have a jet stream to the north of us we will benefit from more warmer air filtering in. that ridge of high pressure will be responsible forgiving us sunshine the good news it will stick around by midday, 63 degrees, partly sunny skies, course of the afternoon by 5:00 p.m. we are talking 66 degrees and here is that 5 day forecast, look at the sunshine straight across the board wednesday through to saturday.

p.m. in the afternoon if i am hungry i will do a quick salad, lots of veggies on it and some times add in fruit to the salad. very very good. >> a lot of talk about fat i see you have nuts you have to be careful which ones you eat and how much. >> you do. normally like this is a nice blend i got this from safeway not to give them a plug but they have a great variety of nuts but the cranberries this has walnuts, almonds normally i try to keep a packet of almonds in the car in my purse you will have those moments you are hungry you pop them in your mouth you are good to go. >> we don't want to leave out the other half working out. >> it is so important one other thing i wanted to mention to you. >> okay 2 minutes. >> talking about proteins do your protein shakes i do this the soy i don't do well with that but absolutely try the different protein shakes do

health exhibit is opening tomorrow. >> holly morris is getting a first look hey holly. >> stick with me kid i will get you in early. right everywhere we go this exhibit does open tomorrow we are here first getting a look today you know it is always a special time when they open the exhibit here at national library of medicine they only do it every two years and every exhibit they open is always educational, eye opening and unique and such is the case with native voices native people's concept of health and illness. it is with great employee the director of the national library -- great joy the director of the national library joins me. tell me why this exhibit and why now. >> well, i think why is because there is a lot to learn from native peoples and their concepts of health and

wellness. one idea is that they think you are responsible for your own health another idea they think healthy people come from healthy communities. so those are not bad ideas to work with for all of us. >> almost like simple concepts but they are so big in their meaning. >> they are there is no secrets that is just the way they are. i think another thing, visitors, we kind of charmed to see these are both the indians, native americans, native hawaiians, native alaskans these are not imaginary people out of movies these are real populations wonderful people with artistic creativity and so forth and they don't want to live in a fairy tale they don't want to live in an old movie they live in the modern world, they rediscovered a lot of things, to be proud of in their own traditions you see the canoe totem pole, these kind of
