9:02 am
are just in, and they show no change in the unemployment rate. it's still at 9.1%. employers added 103,000 jobs last month. half of those were from verizon striking employees returning. the economy needs more new jobs to keep up with the population growth. as doug luzader reports, now the white house is under enormous pressure. >> reporter: new unemployment numbers may add more fuel to the fire for wall street protestors, already angry over the job shortage. president obama delivered what may have been a preemptive strike yesterday at a lengthy white house press conference pushing his new jobs package. >> our economy really needs a jolt right now. this is not a game. this is not the time for the usual political gridlock. >> reporter: the president meets today with democratic leaders in congress to figure

her grandchild. the jury returned the verdict in about five hours. carmela dela rosa stood quietly as the verdict was read. she was convicted of throwing her 2-year-old granddaughter to her death. defense attorneys had argued she was mentally ill. prosecutors said she was vengeful, trying to get back at her son-in-law for getting her daughter pregnant before marriage. outside court, both sides talked about how the verdict will likely not bring peace to this family. >> i thought the case was difficult case from both sides, and so nothing really surprises me in the jury system. i'm disappointed. >> there are no winners in a case like this. there's no joy. i'm not happy. i'm sad. we've all lost a little piece of our hearts in this thing. it's just grueling, and i can't imagine what james and kat went through. >> prosecutors had asked for a

life sentence, but the jury recommended 35 years. the judge could lower that number, but cannot increase it. sentencing is set for january. defense attorneys say they will probably appeal. a couple of editorials in the "washington post" questioning why mayor gray appeared to be favoring one grass mowing company. a round table discussion will be held today to take a look at it. the mayor's office responded saying it was trying to promote local businesses. the contract submitted by the company was more expensive than the other. a world class view, just don't look down. >> the crews finished up their second pass of the monument this week. laura evans has more with one of the climbers. >> reporter: it's dizzying looking up to see the team dangling from ropes. eric stone, a member of that team, says it was an incredible

experience. >> we sit there and realize we're on the monument, and very few people get to do this. >> reporter: stone is an engineer, trained in seismic events, and he used mountain climbing equipment to examine the exterior for damage from the earthquake. >> once you're out there, it's like any other job. >> reporter: just like any other job, except they're 550 feet up in the sky. birds flying through their work space, and the dome looking more like a miniature replica. stone says he considers himself lucky to have had this opportunity, combining passion with work and preserving the national monument. >> we could tell whether it was an older crack or new crack, and we would document what we saw and talk with our team later about it. >> reporter: next up, dangling from the national cathedral, where stone says the top of the

towers are damaged from the earthquake. >> there's two west towers over the main entrance, looking to inspect those from ropes to get those cleared and get the entrance pushed back to people can get in there. >> fascinating. that was laura evans reporting. stone says they'll start their work on the cathedral october 17th. it's expected to take about one week. by the way, we asked him if he gets hazard pay for the job and he said no, just nice dinners. back now to our top story, the occupy wall street protests in new york continue to grow. >> versions of the movement are popping up across america, including here in the nation's capital. there are more demonstrations happening in d.c. today. we do now go to sherri ly, she is live at freedom plaza with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. occupy d.c. is just one of the groups protesting here today. now on freedom plaza, this group is calling itself the october 2011 movement. you can see we've got the
9:09 am
protestors out here getting organized once again this morning. they've got a stage set up. they've got their signs. we're hearing them chanting already. they are here to send the message they are not just fed up with wall street, but washington as well. protestors took to the streets in d.c. en masse yesterday, from freedom plaza to the white house to the chamber of commerce. their message is the same, whether it's occupy d.c. or this one on freedom plaza. they're angry over the economy, war and taxes and with washington for failing to fix the financial problem. where are the jobs they chanted. it's a movement that's bringing together people across the country. >> majority of americans are struggling now, and that's who the government should be supporting and helping to get out of this situation and we
9:10 am
shouldn't keep supporting corporations who refuse to hire. >> reporter: about an hour from now, the protests will head to the federal reserve. this is just day two of the protests. they're going to keep this going throughout the weekend until sunday. that's the latest here, back to you. >> thank you very much. 80-foot columns with metal taped stripes. is that right? >> tap es industries. >> okay. >> it's spelled off. >> that's the idea of a document dedicated to eisenhower. not everyone likes the design. details coming up next. >> it's been a rough morning, pardon us. the caps kick off the season tomorrow night. dave ross is getting the low down on this season from coach bruce boudreau. his live interview is coming up next. we're going to try to come right back. stay with us. ]
