8:22 am
especially there is concern or questions about that younger age group the preschoolers from 4 to 5 it is important i think for parents to understand we are not talking about your typically ram bung house 4-year- old or 5-year-old but -- ram bun house 4-year-old or 5-year- old. >> at 4 i have kids they are running around all over the place hard to get their attention but you said there are specific markers or differences in kids with adhd can you tell us about those. >> sure, these are kids that really fall outside the scope of typical childhood activity and behaviour, one mother whose child was diagnosed at this young age said her child would often have a temper tantrum but it went on not just for a little bit but hours and hours, it is really with the help of a
8:23 am
pediatrician and trained professional parents they hope to understand whether or not their child's behaviour especially for a new parent, which may be a challenge, to know whether or not this is typical, normal, or whether it really falls outside the scope of what would be considered normal developmental behaviour. >> if you have a question ask your pediatrician. >> most definitely this is what guidelines hope to do help guide pediatricians and clinicians and parents and caregivers. >> what does it do for upper range of people, we talked about not just going below age 6 but then also above the age that we might think normalcy i hate to use that word even but what does it tell us about older people. >> are you talking about older teens. >> mm-hmm. >> well, these guidelines one of the good things about them they do address what they call special circumstances of both younger and older and they differentiate the treatments
8:24 am
more appropriate for those different age groups younger age they for example specify behavioral intervention should be the first line of treatment for the 4 and 5-year-olds and medication merely only considered after that. when you get into upper teens, there are other issues to consider, issues like being evaluated for substance abuse, is there any history there, would there be a problem, in giving medication like stimulants that may lend themselves to being diverted some how, older kids, have difficult -- they are going to be driving soon so there is a higher incidents of accidents and emergency room visits and those sorts of things really important especially if kids are untreated for hyper active diand im-- activity and impulsive behaviour. >> it allows national resource center on adhd to get the word

anybody who has a car knows to keep it on the road can be costly it pays to do research when it comes to getting that vehicle fixed. according to numbers from check book magazine, that indeed is the case founder and president and good friend of fox 5 joins us with advice how to get repairs done without a dent in the wallet. you know it is a good story when it is the cover story of your magazine which it is this time around good to see you. let's talk about this it effects all of us who drive a
8:38 am
vehicle if you don't drive a vehicle you are fortunate you don't have to deal with this but for those who do when it comes to repairs, i don't think anything pains you more than taking it to the shop and having to write that check or credit card or whatever how do we find out the best deal. >> the hassle of going to the shop is something you don't want to do but then you go there and have to go aagain it is really bad and then a third time, people have that experience paying a large amount of money we found, among -- we value waited almost 600 -- we value waited almost 600 shops, there were about 100 of those shops that got that kind of favorable ratings from only half or fewer of their customers those are the shops where people are not having
8:39 am
satisfactory experiences you want to avoid them of course as you know the price differences are pretty -- >> vary quite a bit. >> we found for instance, very simple repair, front brake pads and row tores on a 2005 chevy malibu prices ranging from $315 up to more than $650 on exactly the same -- >> depending where you go. >> here we can see other comparisons look for yourself when you go through that axle work $400 to $1,200. pays to shop around but how do we do that if we don't know much. >> it is a problem to do that kind of shopping but if you know -- if you go to one shop and get an estimate, staggering amount of money you might want to shop with that very specific estimate in hand, but what we
8:40 am
do is do comparative price shopping, under cover price shopping for a whole lot of repairs, a large market basket of repairs they don't know what we are doing we do it over a period of time, 6 months or more we come up with a price index score that shows how this shop's prices compared to the average of all other shops in the area. you can see some shops on average are 30, 40% more expensive than other shops some shops are 30, 40% less expensive that is a big difference that is the way to short handed, doesn't mean for your particular repair but on average their prices are good. >> some of the shops that ranked best for price and quality in dc and out lying counties as well. in blanket terminology here, we talked about this before, going to the dealer versus independent shop what is your thought and opinion what does research show you there.
8:41 am
>> well, at check book.org we have some very concrete information showing how they compare, so dealers on average, were rated superior by more than 80% of their surveyed customers independent shops on average were rated superior by about 55% of their surveyed customers, 55% versus 80% means you are a lot more -- >> other way around. >> opposite sorry. >> dealers, sorry, the dealers it is only 55% of these had a very good rating as opposed to 80% interdependent shops independent shops rate better and dealerships were more expensive than independent shops, substantial difference in price and customer satisfaction we know that is true dealers say because we are doing more complicated repairs
8:42 am
we compared repair work we had specific reinspections of work done at dealerships versus independent and find independents do better on comparable jobs. >> the key is to find one and stick with it the process is research and finding that one. >> i will tell you what i have more than 600 listed in here. robert always good to see you thanks, appreciate it good luck to you. hope it stays well tuned alison back to you. 8:42 a.m. on this tuesday morning, one of dcs most popular events, 3 days away holly is live with more on what we can expect the 13th annual, boo at the zoo good morning. >> you are right alison good morning to you, you want to get your tickets now if you are planning on coming out to this event we are getting a wonderful preview live in the invertebrate house where you could says the a feeding frenzy
