new research about the narrowed scope of african american ancestry is opening eyes the findings show most american blacks can trace their roots to three major regions in africa. joining us this morning, dr. linda haywood director of african american studies and professor of history, boston american university and dr. thornton they authored the new research good morning to both of you. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> if you could, just tell us, the headlines here about the work that you have been doing and how it is making a difference. >> well, we've been working on trying to narrow down the ancestry of african americans through the regions, specific regions in africa from which
9:15 am
their ancestors originated and we also have done some work with dr. henry low gates in connection with trying to figure out what the dna research that has been done on a lot of african americans tell us about their ancestry as well. >> and professor thornton you found most blacks descend from some 46 different ethnic groups in three major areas on the continent of africa can you tell us about that. >> sure well, what we started with, was we took a look at shipping records and the shipping records basically tell you what ship called in what african ports and called on what american ports we looked then on what hinter lands on the african continent would share those reports we took a look at interviews, conducted with recently arrived africans in the 18th century and focused
9:16 am
on one man, a moravian missionary he asked the people for their ethnicity, and language samp and stories how they -- sample and stories how they were enslaved we compiled a map of africa in the 18th century, many of the ethnic names were not the same but by imposing the geographical information on to a modern day of african ethnicity we did a correlation and that group came up with the 46 groups we labeled. >> we should also note we could not have done this without, in fact, the new stay it'sics we have -- statistics we have from the atlantic slavery data base originally started, hat howard university it is now housed at emory i think, university. >> you know we are talking to
9:17 am
both of youphds, professors, we are talking about sleigh routes where africa -- slave routes where africans were taken from their home continent you are talking about it in numbers, and your research is so thorough but man the emotional part of this can you speak to that? how you came upon those feelings during the research. >> in my particular case i also did my own dna, you know, my mytochondria dna and found out, my markings matched people who today are called hulani it was just exciting i found i had an identity i found i could now be certain that i am descended from a person, a woman, because the mytochondria dna is only passed through females it was a closure in certain ways so i
9:18 am
think for each american, african american and euro american who had opportunity to find out more about the roots of their family this is just something human beings want to know, you want to know where you originated. >> dr. thornton let me ask you there have been agencies that do the dna, testing as we heard from dr. hayward there i have done it myself how accurate are these now that this research has been completed by the two of you, how would you match that up and people who have gone through those services how accurate do you thing that is? >> right well, the accuracy depends on a lot of circumstances, at the present level that we have, of participation from the african side in generating dna evidence, it is pretty low right now a lot of areas are under represented and then
9:19 am
because africa was the origin of humanity there is a great deal more diversity in africa than any other continent which means you can get quite a widespread of people related to you in some way or another but this is exactly where our documentary research complements the dna research the two really have to work together what we are able to do is sort of, there is one set of information that comes from genetics and another from document when you cross the two you get a little bit closer match so it is not 100% clear in many case, although in some cases and actually linda's case is a good example, the evidence looks really good to some body who knows african history it is not a simple procedure at all, the methods we use are the ones that if you saw african american live part one we were consultants for that, that is the method we used and explained it there on camera as well with specific cases it is
9:20 am
just a matter of matching up american locations shipping routes, likely movements of people within america, before they hit the gene logical record and doing calculations we have done. >> and also -- >> we are going to ask the audience to please look more closely at your research we are just completely out of times the fascinating, inciteful we appreciate you joining us today, dr. linda hayward and dr. thornton out of boston university. thank you very much. >> thank you very much. >> all right goodbye. >> fascinating stuff. >> right and it hasn't been done before, i look forward to reading the entire study. >> absolutely. the trial of dr. conrad murray continues today, a nurse practitioner, the request michael jackson made her that she denied him. holly is kicking it on the
