according to the american foundation for suicide prevention, one in five people will lose a family member to suicide during their lifetime. it's a startling statistic, and an effort to reduce the number of suicides in our community, the organization is organizing a walk for this weekend. joining us now with more information, are peggy, president of the american foundation for suicide prevention, and board chair, steve. thank you for coming in. it is a tough subject, and that's one of the things you want to bring attention to, the fact that those who have known
9:16 am
someone who committed suicide, had a family member who committed suicide, it's sometimes tough to talk about it. i guess what the message is that you want to get out is that it needs to be talked about to some extent. that helps get people where they need to be to seeking treatment. can you talk a little bit about that? >> absolutely. there is still so much stigma that surrounds both suicide, suicidal feelings and mental health issues, that that's one of the reason we are in existence to work on that stigma and also allow people to feel free to get the help to prevent suicide. >> i know in some of your literature you liken it to in the 80s people didn't like to talk about aids, it was swept under the rug for a time. why is it like that when it comes to suicide and mental health issues? >> i think there's just a long standing sort of belief that somehow you're a weak person or you have some kind of
9:17 am
functional deficit or something if you end up with a mental illness, and that's not true. we now know most mental illnesses are brain disorders, and people really do suffer. other people also don't know how to handle it, so they may end up pulling away from it instead of trying to help the person. >> steve, talk to us, if you can, about what drew you to this organization. >> right. i'm happy to. about 12 years ago i suffered a major depression and at that time was suicidal. had constant thoughts about ending my life. it was a painful experience, but luckily i got treatment and help. i feel stronger today than ever. i take medication daily to help with my depression and manage that quite well. but sadly, about six years ago, i lost my nephew to suicide. a year after the day he lost his life, i joined about 2,000 people in san francisco on the overnight walk. with a really helped both my brother and i during that walk
9:18 am
was to realize this isn't an isolated issue. there were over 2,000 people walking that event. and all of them had lost somebody to suicide. it helped my brother start his recovery. then about a year later i noticed an ad in a local paper about a walk and i volunteered to help. we've done five walks now in fairfax county. our walk tomorrow in d.c. is the fifth annual walk. >> one of the reasons i wanted to get you in here to talk about this, it's an important issue, and i have experienced it firsthand. i lost, and something i don't talk about, it's difficult, but i lost my father to suicide, almost 20 years ago. it's painful to talk about. you're right, sometimes you don't know how others will react to that. the goal of the walk is to give people increased awareness
9:19 am
about the mental health aspect, but also to give some people who may be depressed hope as well, correct. >> absolutely. >> tell me about the event that's taking place in washington tomorrow. >> tomorrow the walk will start at the sylvan theater on the national mall. as of last night we had over 700 people signed up, which is about twice the number of last year. i think we're getting awareness in the community. about 30 minute opening ceremony. we have four speakers to talk about mental health, suicide prevention and some of the issues that come along with this problem. then we'll walk about 3.5 miles around the mall through some of the newest monuments, including the martin luther king monument. at the end, a short closing ceremony, where folks can kind of remember the loved ones they've lost. it's going to be a good day. >> it is a way to honor those who -- that we may have lost. >> absolutely. i think there's a little bit of a healing aspect that comes from participation. it's a positive thing people can do to help others. >> we thank you both for coming in. thank you for sharing your

story and hopefully it will make it easier for others, including myself, to deal with these types of issues. we do want to mention the walk takes place rain or shine. i know the forecast isn't great for tomorrow. hopefully it will clear up a little bit. there's the information. you can also go to myfoxdc.com. we'll link you to the information and to the out of the darkness web site as well. thank you very much. we appreciate it. allison, back to you. tony, thank you. a big story last week, the animals on the loose in ohio. now the wife of the man who set them free before committing suicide himself wants the surviving animals back. details on that. holly is getting ready for halloween this morning. she's doing it all herself. holly, good morning. >> reporter: that's right. i just made fox 5 caution tape. listen, with halloween being on monday, you have all weekend to come up with fun things to decorate your home. that's what we're doing this morning with the help of our expert, robin beam. do it yourself halloween treats for your house, live later on fox 5 morning news.
