7:00 am
of u.s. soldiers killed in action. you won't believe where some ended up and what the wounded warriors are doing to help service members cope with life after they return from overseas. fox 5 morning news starts right now. it is already light out there as we take a look at the horizon. the camera is shaking a little bit. it's going to be breezy throughout the day. it is 11/11/11. glad you are with us. >> i have to be completely honest. >> what's that? >> you have seen holly do the maternity segmental week. today, she is did he red door spot right here in northwest washington. but she thinks she is doing a segment about pampering. okay? >> she's going to get a
7:01 am
surprise on air shower. >> really? >> hopefully she's not listening to this. hopefully it's all worked out where she can't hear it. at 7:00 to, 7:20 and surprise her. >> here is where folks at home come n don't ruin it. >> it's our shower for her. no facebook, please, no traffic about, hey, make sure you watch at 7:20. no twitter. after that, blow it up. but before 7:20. >> i'm not going to be here. sarah is coming back. >> we adore holly. hopefully she'll be surprised. >> that's our little secret. we are not talking about it again until 7:20. >> right now, we're going to be talk about tony. no secret it's been a nice week. >> i just want to say it did help to keep the secret that you whispered. >> thank you. i just wanted to do it.
7:02 am
it made it seem more you are scent. that worked, on tv. >> it it veterans day, it is going to be a breezy and chilly veterans day to be sure. here is a look at the temperatures. 39 in dulles airport, 39 in baltimore. fredericksburg, 39. chilly one. satellite radar for the morning, here you go. i stepped outside. number 1, it's cold. number 2, it's windy. skies are beautiful. things look good taking a look at the forecast today. it is going to be quite chilly and going to be quite breezy. we are look for a high of about 52 degrees. that's a look at what's happening. >> i'm still doing the next thing. >> you love it.
7:03 am
>> i can't stop, you know. >> somebody hold her head in place. >> yes. >> and then the bottom half, that's a different story. all the roads this among, you're going to find inbound suitland highway, heavy accident in southeast. if you are coming in toward the douglas bridge. looking good in the hoff and then the main line no problem here at the american legion bridge between 95 and 270. that's a look at ontime traffic. now to the latest in the penn state child abuse scandal. the assistant coach, mike mcqueary will not be on the sideline after threats were made against him. he is the one who told joe
7:04 am
paterno about the alleged rape. pennsylvania governor tom corbett said he supported the firing of joe paterno. you know, everyone is upthat's joe pa is brought on this. he didn't deserve it. i urge the board to deal with this quickly and swiftly. coach paterno was on this year's list of presidential medal r. but the senator who placed him on that list withdrew him. i think what get lost, when this first came out, mike mcqueary was read too the graduate assistant. this is a kid who grew up in
7:05 am
state college, very reveered family, and was their starting quarterback at penn state before becoming an assistant coach. >> and moved up the ladder. >> to be one of joe paterno's top assistant. it's going to be real, surreal. the game is at noon. that place is going to be packed. it is going to be an interesting scene to. let's hope it all stays civil no matter what happens on the football field. this is so much more than football. this story transcended football. for the first time in four decades, they're going to have a new head coach. tom bradley has been on joe paterno's staff for 33 years. you saw at the press conference when he talked about take over for joe pa that he said it's wit mixed emotions. he still revered joe paterno but, yet, he has a job to do. this is not an easy situation
7:06 am
to step in. i know the nebraska kids coming in were a little uneasy. it's a good thing that the campus starts at non. >> who cares about winning or losing at this point. let's just have a civil football game if we can do that at this point for three hours. let's try to keep it about that >> tough situation for the kids who it actually played football. some of them were kids when this happened themselves. you hate to see them puppished. i think it is smart that they took away mcqueary from this ballgame because could you imagine if he were there? >> we were outraged when that was not initially done. penn state has taken a couple of stems forward and then a couple of stems back. that's the smart thing to do for everybody involved. when you talk about having 70, 80, 90,000 people.
7:07 am
you have to take stems. i hit it unfortunate is finally taking those steps. >> a stadium over well 100,000. >> tom bradley has been on the staff for 35 years. a lot of these coaches have been on the staff for years and years and years. tend of the season, are they all gone? >> i think so. they're going to have to clean house. that's going to be tom bradley as well because he has been with joe pa for 33 years. they have to get a clean slate. how can you go forward with some of the same people that made those decisions a decade ago. for everybody involved, they have to move on. wilson ramos situation? >> the good news is that he is still aly. the family is waiting to hear from the be abductors. everybody in d.c. is thinking about wilson ramos today. the nats were spossed to be there at fight night. they chose not to be there because everybody is holding
7:08 am
their breath. >> really tough situation when even the family says is, all we can do is wait to hear some kind of ransom request. >> nothing so far but the authority are waiting. >> they found the vehicle and they say he is alive. so fingers crossed that all that ends well. >> al? >> steve and day, thank you as president barack obama gets ready to honor the nation's heroes by laying a wreath, the administration is still dealing with fallouts after reports that remains were mishandled at dover air force base. >> reporter: that investigation began last year. it is eerily similar to the problems found here at arlington national cemetery. three whistle blowers reported the mishandled remains at dover and some of the unidentified remains were dumped in a virginia landfill. dover air force base is where
7:09 am
america's war dead come home, a scathing report now says that bad handling of remains have dishonored those who gave their lives. parts of bodies were unidentified improperly disposed off by air force morticians in landfill. three people were punished but no one was fired over what the report called gross mismanagement. secretary of defense leon panetta says that additional probes are under way aren't all americans, including myself, are justifiably disturbed. >> we are not going to stand for. this we are not going to allow this to exist. we have to do this better. it has to be corrected. >> the report found that body parts from troops killed in afghanistan were lost twice and that, in one case, arm bone of a dead marine was sawed off to fit into his uniform.
7:10 am
secretary panetta says that those families need to get an apology. sherry lee, thank you. it is veterans day, the official day that we all hon your our veterans. this morning, president obama is laying a wreath at arlington national. then he will head to california for the first ever carrier classic. it will be a basketball on a carrier. with texas governor rick perry still trying to explain a painful debate appearance this week, gop voters are still testing the waters and testing for the front runner. another republican could be on the rise. >> the question among republicans seems to be who's next. and rick perry is turning up just about everywhere. >> ladies and gentlemen, please
7:11 am
welcome texas governor rick perry. >> there he was last night on the david letterman show delivering his top 10 excuses. >> number 7? >> i thought the debate was tonight it >> i see. there you go. >> for perry, it capped off a day spent talking about just anyone, trying to limit the damage from a cringe-worthy debate. >> commerce and -- let's see. i can't. i can't. sorry. oops. >> it was a disaster. there is just no way to put any fine point on it. >> perry is the anti-romney, a candidate who is not conservative enough. there is an even larger opening for other candidates like newt gingrich. >> tell everybody, the model is the tortoise. every day, we get up and go a few stems in the right drenchts
7:12 am
newt gingrich has been rising in the polls despite very little money. >> gingrich is not without weakness. the long voting record and issues from his personal life could be real limitations. a candidacy that was once in deep trouble is now resurgent with herman cain battling his own problems, long-time front runner romney could soon have a new challenger on his hands. >> for now, mitt romney may try to take any advantage of any vacuum that may exist by now trying to take iowa that was seen as a long shot for him still ahead, a heads up for metro rail riders on this veteran day. >> plus a wedding rush is on. thousands of couples are expected to tight knot today. why? we'll explain why. >> may have to do with the
7:13 am
date. >> 11/11/11. >> traffic is light today. do you know why? >> it is veterans day. >> thank you to all our veterans there. federal government not in service today so traffic should be a little lighter there. we'll check in with jewely and tony has a pretty nice forecast coming up.
