region. raindrops as well on this monday morning. glad you're with us and hope your work week is off to a good start. good morning, i'm steve chenevey. >> i'm alison seymour. hello, friend. >> happy monday. >> to you as well. let's get the latest on the weather from tony perkins. good morning, sir. >> good morning to you and everybody. you saw the live shot, fog is the main culprit this morning causing problems as far as our weather goes. let's take a look at ppening. we can show you where we have the most dense fog. it is getting closer to the district. we have fog in the washington area, including reagan international airport. the most dense is to our north and north and west. cumberland, maryland, very dense fog there. more dense fog to the north near frederick, maryland, places like that. westminster and to our north and west in leesburg. problem spots there. we'll continue to deal with this through the early morning hours, as it will take a while

for all of this to burn off. let's look at the radar. we had rain showers overnight, but not now. it's pushed off to the east. i would not rule out another shower or two popping up here or there. i think for the most part we're done. main event will hold off until foam. cloudy skies today. morning fog. a shower or two here or there. highs in the mid-and upper 50s. 55 in frederick. 59 in fredericksburg. 58 in downtown d.c. that's a look at what's happening with the weather. now let's go to julie wright. good morning to you, sir. very much a busy commute. traveling north of town, accident activity with police on the scene. northbound on the bw parkway at powder mill road. southbound 95 coming out of laurel, 212, and the beltway

below speed headed towards 270, 28 minute commute. southbound 270, average speed out of german town is 27 miles per hour, working in towards rockdale. along 270, leaving clarksburg in all of that fog headed south. no incidents to report now if you are traveling northbound on i-95 from woodbridge. eastbound 66 approaching business 234 had reports of a stalled car blocking the center of the roadway. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. developing this morning, a terror plot thwarted in the big apple. police say this man planned to target soldiers and marines returning from war. investigators say pimentel planned to blow up police stations and post offices.

he's been under investigation for two years. he was not part of any terror cell. >> the suspect was a so-called lone wolf, motivated by his own resentment of the presence of american troops in iraq and afghanistan, as well as inspired by al-qaida propaganda. >> he was arraigned last night and denied bail. he faces life in prison if convicted. other big story this morning, the showdown over cutting the deficit. the debt super committee is about out of time. >> if there is no 11th hour deal, they may admit defeat today. let's get the latest from stacy cohen today. a hard pill to swallow. >> reporter: it is. after all the optimism, the hope would be they would be able to accomplish what congress was not able to accomplish. doesn't look like that's happening and we expect them to

call it quits today. the national debt doesn't rest for a second, climbing past $15 trillion past week. but the congressional subcommittee is about to call it quits. six republicans, six democrats who couldn't agree on either spending cuts or tax hikes that would do nothing more than slow down this clock slightly. >> little hard for us to negotiate with them when they're still negotiating with themselves. >> we didn't come here to do another tax cut to the wealthiest people while we're asking fixed income seniors to ante up more. >> reporter: congress set up the super committee to come up with about a trillion dollars in reductions over a decade. otherwise, automatic cuts kick in, half of them targeting the pentagon. any initial hopes have been dashed. by and large, republicans want spending cuts. democrats want tax hikes. for all the pandering on both sides over the automatic cuts,

there is still some question about whether any of them will come to pass. >> they will be presented in the lame duck session next december following the election. and we will not have the cuts that everyone talks about being so draconian to the pentagon or elsewhere. >> reporter: that may be. but the markets are the thing to watch today. investors are worried that congress can't stomach even a tiny slowdown in run-away overspending. the automatic cuts are set to take place in 2013. they would be spread equally through domestic spending and domestic programs and the pentagon. there is some political wrangling already if they can slow or stall the cuts, particularly those geared towards defense. president obama and leaders said over the summer if there was failure on part of the super committee those cuts

would remain in place. stacey cohan, back to you. investigators say frederick scott was one of three men who got into a night in a club back in march. one of the men was shot and killed. scott and another man were charged. november10th, scott posted a $75,000 property bond and was set free. until the error was discovered. >> seems to be a clerical error, possibly through the court system. appears to be no fault of the department of corrections. they were just following the paperwork that was sent over from the courts, allowing him to post the bond. >> police say it's rare that somebody charged with first degree murder is ever allowed bond. the state's attorney now investigating how this happened. detectives are on the lookout for a second robbery suspect accused of preying on college students.

this is surveillance video. police say they robbed three george washington university students and a university of maryland student last week. one has already been arrested and charged. dramatic video of a fire in sterling, virginia, hitting an apartment complex there. it broke out about 7:30 sun morning. two people were taken to a hospital nearby. more than two dozen residents were displaced. the fire was deemed an accident, caused about $2 million in damage. today d.c.'s mayor will announce another big shakeup in his staff. it's reported he'll bring on a new communicates director and new director of staff. being moved out of the mayor's office is linda horton hoy, who will work at the health

department. many of the candidates attended a thanksgiving family forum over the weekend. they were cheered, there were tears. here's newt gingrich talking about occupy wall street, cain kids talking about kids and rick perry joking with ron paul about his most famous moment. >> that is a pretty good symptom of how much the left has collapsed as a moral system in this country, and why you need to reassert something as simple as saying to them, go get a job right after you take a bath. [applause] >> i didn't believe that i was home enough when my kids were growing up. >> we don't need the department of education, we need those things taken care of at the state level. >> and the energy department, too. >> mitt romney did not attend because he was in new hampshire campaigning. romney opened a new headquarters, though, in des moines.

president obama back at the white house now, after nine days in the asian pacific. the president was at an economic conference negotiating trade agreements. on tap for today, the president plans to sign a bill into law that helps veterans find work. tonight he and the first lady will celebrate country music as part of their performance at the white house series. speaking of the first lady -- >> first lady of the united states, michelle obama and dr. jill biden as they deliver the most famous words -- >> the white house down playing reports there were lots of loud boos heard as the first lady and dr. biden took to the microphone. they say it was a chaotic crowd and there was all sorts of noise going on. mrs.obama and mrs. biden were there to honor military troops and their families. earlier the pair received a standing ovation at the predriver's race meeting. classes in syria reach new

syria, protests for and against the regime of president assad over the weekend, turning into a civil war. to egypt now, protestors clashing with riot police. they are not happy at the slow pace of reform, more than six months after they toppled mubarak. more than 20 demonstrators have been killed since saturday and a thousand hurt. military rulers vaguely said they will hold on to power until after presidential elections late next year or early 2013. closer to home, two campus police officers at the university of california davis on administrative leave. they were caught on tape pepper spraying peaceful protestors. today the chancellor of the school plans to meet with

7:26 now on fox 5 morning news. more disturbing findings about health care workers in maryland. the washington examiner reports state health officials revoked 157 nursing assistant certificates. that was taken after it was learned a state employee signed off on medical documents for people who didn't meet minimum standards. that employee has been fired. today in virginia, mothers against drunk driving will release a report that rates the nation and each state on initiatives to counter this issue. nearly 900 people were killed by drunk drivers nationally between thanksgiving and new year's day in 2009. official ribbon cutting ceremony is being held today. both sections of the icc will be free to ride until december 6th. the 18-mile highway will

manassas. earlier crash we reported east has been cleared. we have the problem in fairfax, westbound north street blocked off between old lee highway and university for trash cleanup. that's a check of your fox 5 on time traffic. unable and ununwilling to compromise, appears the bipartisan super committee will admit failure today. joining us is bob cusack, managing editor of the hill. good morning. >> good morning. >> let's understand exactly the deadline. it was wednesday, but things need to be in place by today to make that happen by wednesday. >> that's right. the deadline is wednesday. but the law says the congressional budget office must offer a score of the plan, but if there's no -- 48 hours before, that is today. if they don't have anything later today, that means they have no plan, no need for a score, it's all done. one possible end to this is

that the republicans and democrats offer competing plans and they vote and they would get voted down, 6-6. this is a very partisan super committee now. they were hand picked by the leaders. a lot of people saw the handwriting on the wall. this thing is going to fail, and probably drop congress' approval rating to lower than 9%. it's a real tough day, i think, for the members of the super committee. >> i mean, if this thing does fail, it seems like such a colossal failure. >> yeah. >> i'll just say, this group that was thought to be able to work together couldn't even come up with something. >> yeah. >> it's a microcosm of what we're seeing in congress, though. >> it is. remember all the members were picked by leaders of congress. so these are party loyalists. these aren't the gang of six centerrists.

they have leadership aspirations and weren't able to get on the same page. republicans wouldn't break away from the tax -- >> these would kick in, if this does not pass, 2013. talking about across the board cuts? what are we looking at? >> it's really unclear exactly, because there are some members saying, we are going to head off the cuts for the defense department, or homeland security. and there are hundreds of billions of dollars that would get cut from defense or homeland security. that's going to be a fight, honestly, between the chairman of the armed services committee and the homeland security committee. now, there are cuts to medicare, but they're not structural cuts. they're across the board, 2%. mostly would affect providers and not beneficiaries. but you know, the lobbying industry is a winner here. they'll be lobbying all throughout 2012 to make sure

these cuts don't happen in 2013. and watch the credit rating agencies. they could down grade the u.s. once again and that would be disastrous for the markets. >> what does that mean for wall street? >> i think it will be a tough day on wall street. unpredictable. but the timing of when they said, hey, we don't reach a deal will be telling, because will they announce it while the markets are open? regardless, the markets are going to take a tumble. but there are these automatic cuts. that was built into the process. honestly, last week i was on capitol hill, it was a lack of urgency. usually when there's a big high profile show down, there's a lot of intensity. that was lacking. >> why do you think that's the case? when you talked about the fact it fails and people come in, pick up the pieces on what they want to see still funded, do you think that had anything to do with it, or we're cynical as a nation now and think, as i do, having heard you say that, that maybe that was the plan, let it fail and we'll clean up

making headlines, two men who ran in the philadelphia marathon over the weekend collapsed and died over apparent heart attacks. police say a 40-year-old man collapsed and a 21-year-old man collapsed at the finish. university officials at oklahoma state will examine the school's travel policy in the wake of a plane crash that killed the women's basketball coach and assistant coach and two others. the coaches were on their way to little rock to watch recruits play in a game. incredible video. a massive chunk of a los angeles street and the coastal bluff it sat on crumbled into the pacific ocean. week storms that dumped heavy rain caused the landslide. geologists had been watching the area since sections of the land began to shift, so the road was already closed. no one was hurt and no property

the studio bleu dance center in ashburn ranked third dance studio in the entire united states. >> what a huge honor. holly is there this morning to feature some of their talented dancers. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it's hard to feature them all. there's so much talent in this room. that's the challenge we're having this morning. we're having a lot of fun. talk about energy, they've got it here. to give you an idea of the magnitude of this operation, they have about 2100 students. they offer over 300 classes a week. the students range in age from 2 to adults. the person overseeing it all is kimberly, the owner and director. good morning. >> good morning. >> reporter: you all are serious about dance. >> we are. we like to work hard and play hard. >> reporter: good for you.

obviously you're being acknowledged for that. how did a studio in ashburn be ranked third in the nation and who is giving you that? >> the federation of dance competition oversees studios across the country who participate in competitions throughout the season and they monitor the competitions, dances, and there's points associated with that. we were not ranked at all previous year. >> reporter: went from nothing to three? >> we went from nothing to three. >> reporter: how were you notified? >> we were at a world dance championship in dallas, texas in august and they were calling out the top 10 and we were excited to hear some of our dance friends around the country and it got to number three, and they called studio bleu and my reaction was did they just call studio bleu? >> reporter: are they talking about us? >> i had no idea. to answer your question, i think i'm more proud of the kids' work ethic and how hard they work and how great they

washington heights and police cars in new york city. >> reporter: authorities arrested pimentel, who they say is an al-qaida sympathizer saturday inside his apartment. police say he was putting a bomb together at the time. >> the nypd intense division did outstanding work in tracking this individual and containing the threat he posed to the city. this is another case where our precautions paid off. >> reporter: an attorney for pimentel disagreed. >> there is nothing sleeper or hidden about this whatsoever. it would not have required a very difficult investigation. if this is what we're coming up with, then we're not where we have to be. >> reporter: neighbors are taken aback by the news of the arrest. >> it's pretty surreal, actually. >> it's pretty frightening, this close to home. >> now the charges against

pimentel include first degree criminal possession of a weapon intended for terrorism. he faces life in prison if convicted. back to you. >> thank you. today is the deadline for the debt super committee to present their plan. but they failed to agree on a deal. let's head to stacey cohan who is outside the capitol. >> reporter: good morning, and the failure of them to make a deal is a very big deal here in washington. capitol hill of course had been hopeful this was the solution to the debt crisis that overtook the hill during the summer when congress was not able to reach an agreement. finally the super committee was established and now they have thrown their hands up, or so we are told. there had been talks and folks that thought perhaps there would be a way for them to eke out an agreement, but it seems at this point reality has begun to overtake hope. >> talks have taking place over

the weekend. they'll continue to take place. but the reality is, we need to come to an agreement. we have to get it drafted. it has it be estimated by the office by the end of monday. >> i think we're deep into the fourth quarter. but there's still time on the clock. i don't think any of us wants to let the time run out without trying everything possible to get there. >> reporter: the penalty for missing this is huge. automatic debt reduction kicks in to the tune of $1 trillion in cuts. those cuts will begin in 2013 and be spread between domestic programs and defense. there is last minute wrangle, thinking maybe they can forstall the cuts at the pentagon, but president obama and congressional leaders have said previously that isn't going to happen. stacey cohan, back to you. >> thank you very much. the death toll from violence clashes in egypt continues to rise. police are clashing with thousands of protestors for a third day in a row now. at least 35 people have been

killed. more than 1700 injured since saturday. demonstrators want military rulers to step down immediately, and transfer power to a civilian government. the military meantime said it may hand over power in a year or more. first round of elections begins next week. syria now, this morning no end to the violence there. the government staged more rallies over the weekend. protestors also rallied, calling for the president to go and now. syria has rejected the latest offer by the arab league to send in observers. the league is holding an emergency session later this week, as the country spirals into civil war. california university placed two officers on administrative leave for pepper spraying occupy protestors. here's amateur video showing one officer dousing demonstrators sitting on the ground. this is on the grounds of uc

it is 11 after the hour now. let's look at some of the stories making headlines. a suspected murderer being asked to turn himself in. frederick scott was mistakenly set free on bond because of a clerical mistake by the court. scott is charged with first degree murder for the shooting death of a man at a club in edmondson maryland in march. investigators say the robberies of three george washington university students and of a university of maryland student are linked. this is video of a suspect, one

morning. thanks for coming in. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> you volunteered, actually lobbied to direct this film, didn't you? why did you want to be a big part of this? >> well, it was, when i saw this as a kid on television, i loved it, even though i really didn't understand everything. but there was something mysterious and magnetic about it. and then in my early 20s, i read the books, so i was already a fan. >> when gary was cast, what was your reaction? >> well, it was a long struggle to find the right george smiley, took nearly six months. so it was a very relieving feeling. >> gary, let me ask you about george smiley. what's it like playing that character? >> it's a great opportunity. i mean, i've joked and said i've waited 30 years to play a part like this. absolute dream.

it makes a change to be the smartest man in the room. some of the characters i've played have not been very bright. >> you have had an interesting run of characters. talk about that a little bit. because you really, when people think about the characters you play and the roles you've played, villan, antagonist. these words seem to come to play. do you enjoy that? do you think it's a type cast role, or is this something you get into that type of character? >> there's an element of type casting to it, because you are somewhat at the mercy of the imagination of the people that are casting you. but i mean, i've played my share of those big physical characters, so it was nice to play -- it was nice to play george, because he's the -- the emotions are all inside. it's very contained and reined in. it's a sitting down part.

>> we love here in washington a good spy story. tell us a little bit about this, how this unfolds and what folks would expect to see if they come see this. >> well, i think you explained it very well. george, when we first meet george, he has been forced into retirement, and they discover there's a double working -- he's one of five at the very top of the secret service. so they recruit, they get me back into investigate and find the mole. >> let me ask you, thomas, about the process here, when you put this together and when you think about having to recreate this time period, what kind of challenges did you face there? because you filmed this in several locations across

europe. >> it's filmed in london and in budapest and instanbul. but 80% i would say is shot in london. we did this in old military barracks in northern london, which gave us a lot. because most of it was from the actual time. so that was a very important part of it. but it's fun to recreate a certain, a very specified era. >> sure. you did a lot of research, obviously, into spies and the list of spies. what was that like and what did you find when you dug a little bit deeper into real life situations? >> well, this thing with research can be so many things. i think a lot of people sort of hide behind research and say, oh, i read all these books about, you know, the cold war and the politics behind it and stuff. research can also be how do you

look when you're lying to someone, like these people have to do. and those things really interested me. >> gary, how do you prepare for a role like this, where are you aware, as you said, it's an intelligent role, but where your subtleties as an actor make a huge difference. >> to begin with, you have this fantastic source material. when you dig a bit deeper, what do you find? my homework, or my research, if you will, was this fabulous book. and we also had access to the man himself if we needed it. he was available to us. so i didn't really have to work very much outside the book and of course, i met and spoke with

john. so everything you kind of need to know about the clues to playing smiley are in that book. >> when we watch this film and see some of the intensity, we can know behind the scenes you were having a good time doing this? >> yeah, we did. >> yeah, we had some laughs. i mean, you get -- i mean, john hurt, who plays control, is a great -- not only a wonderful actor, but he's a great -- he has fantastic stories. and i'm sitting across mr. firth, oscar winner mr. firth. he's got a naughty twinkle in his eye. so you know, it is dark and austere, but we did -- he's a fun -- he's a funny guy. >> i could tell. i could tell already.

turkey is a thanksgiving day tradition. but it's also a bird that most of us don't cook on a regular basis. so that is good reason to be extra careful about handling, baking and storing turkey safely. joining us now with tips, dr. elizabeth hagan, undersecretary at the usda. thank you for being here. it's true, we cook this bird maybe twice a year, max. and lots of things can go wrong, right? >> that's right. you're cooking for probably more people than you're used to. probably a more complicated affair than you're used to having in your home. it's easy to lose track of a couple of simple steps that can help keep your family safe. >> you put up -- there's a psa that's been put out talking about what exactly, the time that you need to cook the bird,

safely handling? >> we're on tv and radio and in print. the four key steps we talk about are clean, separate, cook, and chill. to clean, it's obvious, you want to have clean utensils, wash your hands and surfaces thoroughly and frequently. separating is important. it's separating raw meat and poultry from fruits and vegetables that won't be cooked. cook to a proper temperature. 165 the number to remember at thanksgiving. it's the safe temperature for poultry and also when reheating leftovers as well. chill is important. get leftovers in the refrigerator within two hours of serving them. >> how long can we eat the leftovers after thanksgiving? how many days? >> if refrigerated, three or

four days and reheat to 165 degrees. >> when we're cleaning our surfaces, i love bleach cleaner for everything. is that too strong? >> it's not necessary. a lot of people don't have those things in their kitchens and we recommend you use warm or hot soapy water and wash thoroughly. you can sanitize your cutting boards by putting a tablespoon of bleach in a gallon of water and use that to add that additional layer of safety. >> the question was, if we're buying fresh turkeys, not frozen, buy it now and how do we store it? and the second one, if we buy the frozen? >> the fresh, 48 hours before serving and no more than that. the frozen, you have to remember to start thawing it.

the safest is in your register. if you have a big bird, you need to start now. >> what about the stuffing issue? this is a big one. before it seemed like the stuffing was cooked in the bird, then later wisdom said, no, no, because we get contamination. what's the advice? >> you're right. we don't recommend stuffing the bird, only because it's a raw bird when you start and you're putting the food containing eggs and other raw ingredients inside. it's hard to get it to a safe temperature. if you are going to stuff the bird, use a meat thermometer and measure the temperature of the stuffing as well, a couple of places at 165. will take about 30 minutes longer to cook a stuffed bird. safest thing to do is bake it outside your bird. >> we were talking earlier and i said, my mother does ay there it easy. >> there's so much good information. the first thing you can do is

hour. this hour, as you can hear, we have moved on to tap dancing. they are so good in part because of the two gentlemen next to me. this is mark osbourne and justice inlewis. good morning to both of you. >> good morning. how are you? >> reporter: i'm doing very well. tell me about the tap program here. >> i started here about four years ago. and mark started here this year. we started taking it from the ground up, started building more kids, more programs. the kids have come in. they were very skeptical about tap at first, until we started introducing the different styles and techniques of tap. we started instituting more rhythm. musical theater tap as well. we have rhythm tap, musical theater and other styles as well. we've really built it up. >> reporter: you have several different levels, from amateur to a preprofessional company? >> we do.

we have rhythm and blue, which is our preprofessional company, and we have multiple levels for all ages. one great thing that separates this studio from i think a lot of others across the country, is the opportunity for outside choreographers and teachers to come in on a consistent basis. >> reporter: that's an amazing opportunity. it's one thing to talk to the teachers, which you guys are fabulous and wonderful dancers, which we've seen, but i want to see if i can get a couple tappers to come forward. quickly, this is what i want you to do, tell me your name, your age, and what dance means to you. >> kim ber, i'm 15, and i love to dance. >> zack, i'm 13, and pretty much it's my life. >> reporter: that wraps it up. >> i'm sarah, i'm 12 and i love expressing myself. >> reporter: it's a great way to express yourself, isn't it? don't i know you? >> i'm lou, 8 years old and it's fun. >> reporter: we've seen luke
