9:16 am
early 90s late 80s my first skate board. >> you literally found it. >> yeah it was in a pile of furniture in the hood you know we see a lot of evictions from people being set up and i found my first one there. >> you picked it up this is -- that right there that move right there may not have been something a lot of kids did at 8 or 9 because it just wasn't something seen a lot. >> no, it wasn't too popular coming from the streets, just in the neighbourhood you know, we were more playing basketball, football, doing more -- i won't says the common because it is kind of stereo typing it just saying, we were skate boarding back then but not doing it as -- we just did it as a thrill. just having fun i used to get a lot of flak. >> you get a hard time for it. >> yeah, a lot of people say being hey, you should do football there ain't no black people. >> you learned how to conceal
9:17 am
your board right? >> yeah, because i used to get on the subway when i got older it was the peer pressure growing up in the hood i used to hear it a lot and it started to bother me so i would jump on the subway and break it down and put it in my backpack or trash bag and hide it. >> we talked about it in the intro i hate to harp on it but it gives your story so much power to know where your life may have been heading would it be fair to say this changed your life the path you were on. >> yes, this was a blessing truly a blessing this saved my life because i mean as one part of time in my life i was heading down the wrong road and you know when you grow up surrounded by so much negativity it is hard to avoid it, my father, he was in and out of jail, at times so just my mother holding things down so kind of hard when she is wearing both pants and trying to hold it down with other siblings that i had it was rough so, yeah, this is
9:18 am
definitely a blessing. >> blessing indeed let's talk about where you are now how did you get discovered, your story has all these different amazing points now okay so who discovered you what happened then? >> my first break out was travis foster. >> amazing. >> yeah i was -- i actually had a friend of mine he was an exskater, chris hall he seen my situation and he brought up the idea let's film a video and go to l.a. and pitch it maybe we can latch on to someone from big sponsor endorsement that would be down to make it happen with you after we made that video we jumped on the flight went to california went to our first trade show san diego, asr trade show and bumped into travis at a booth. >> unbelievable so from there you have been able to bring the sport back now not only into the neighbourhoods but all the
9:19 am
kids who have an interest in it how are you able to relate to kids maybe you need to pick up a skate board. >> what i pitch, this is me coming from that same situation most of the kids olive in the same situation i came from, so -- kids who live in the same situation i came from they want to live it through you and want to be like the way they envision me it is like he has been through the same situation i been through so it is easy for them to take a liking to me, but i just you know, skate and i just show them you can get some of these same things like i got jewellery and things like that i got it from skate boarding kind of just wave these things around in their face showing them that hey, there is positive ways you can get these things. >> the last thing we got to let you go but the brothers opened a skate park how big of an honor is that. >> a blessing, it was a blessing you know, what was crazy about that situation they reached out the me on twitter and they were coming to dc to

9:31 am
>> well, yes, but she is 16. >> usually anything shelby wants shelby gets but if i give him some turkey it might not be a good afternoon he is 16. okay. >> all right. let me get to the forecast beautiful i it will be very nice around here next couple days, nice end to the month of november shaping up across the region. >> 47 washington, 46 in annapolis leonard town nice warm up temperatures low 30s overnight 43 manassas, 34 out at dulles still a cool spot temperatures warming up, 48 in frederick. beautiful day sunshine expected lighter winds and not only today next several days as this weather pattern will be very slow to change but that is good news look how quiet it is all the counties here virginia, maryland, pennsylvania, a few clouds off to the north and west, here in washington area, we are expecting bright
9:32 am
sunshine winds have lightened up overnight storm from yesterday, area of low pressure pushing well off to the north and east, bottom line less wind than what we have had. high pressure building in that means a beauty of a holiday not only today but beauty of a holiday weekened as this area of high pressure really takes its time to stroll on through the mid-atlantic that will keep the jet stream, big ridge across the upper half of the country here that means temperatures well above normal, well into the 60s here starting tomorrow upper 50s then mid-60s around here starting tomorrow right through saturday and sunday lots of sunshine windy beautiful day get out enjoy it play football before the big turkey dinner, 59 degrees winds out of the north and west, later tonight, cold, upper 30s outside the belt way, 41 in town cold if you are out and about winds out of the west 5 miles per hour. 5 day forecast, mid-60s tomorrow mid-60s saturday, sunday, low to mid-60s showers
9:33 am
back in the forecast late sunday and during the day monday so happy thanksgiving sarah back to you guys. whether you are a seasoned chef or new to the kitchen thanksgiving can be a little intimidating. >> so that is why so many people call the turkey and food safety hotlines. i talked with a top government safety official what you should know before popping that bird in your oven. >> we cook this big bird maybe twice a year max lots of things can go wrong. >> that's right you are cooking for probably more people than you are used to probably a more complicated affair than you are used to having in your own home and it is easy to lose track of a few simple steps keep you and your family safe for the holidays. >> there is a psa put out kind of talking about what exactly, the time that you need to cook the bird, safe handling. >> right so food safe family campaign we are on tv, radio,
9:34 am
in print the four key steps are clean, separate, cook and chill. >> okay. >> so to clean it is obvious, clean utensils, wash your hands thoroughly, wash surfaces thoroughly and frequently while cooking and making food separate is important separating raw meat and poultry from fruits and vegetables not cooked and then, cooked to a proper temperature 165 is the number to remember at thanksgiving safe temperature for poultry and also safe temperature when reheating left overs as well and then chill is another big one, get left overs in the refrigerator within 2 hours of serving them. >> how long can we eat the left overs. really within 3 or 4 days if they are refrigerated you can freeze them and keep them longer but within 3 or 4 days is safest and you want to reheat them to 165 degrees. >> let me ask probably what will sound like a silly
9:35 am
question when cleaning surfaces i love like bleach cleaner for everything is that too strong? will that lead to other problems? >> it is not necessary a lot of people don't have those things in their kitchens we recommend you use hot or warm soapy water if you want to take an extra step you can sanitize your cutting board putting a table spoon overbleach in a gallon of water using that to add that additional layer. >> what about the stuffing issue before it seemed like the stuffing was cooked in the bird then later was no, no, we get contamination. >> you are right alison we don't recommend stuffing the bird only because it is a raw bird when you start you put these eggs and other ingredients inside if you are going to stuff the birds use a meat thermometer a couple places at 165, it will take you 30 minutes longer to cook a stuffed bird than unstuffed, the safest thing to do is put
9:36 am
it in a casserole dish. dr. hagan says i can cook that bird. we will see we do thank you for being here. the under secretary for food safety with usda happy thanksgiving. >> all right well, experts do not recommend deep frying a turkey at home the national fire protection agency says fires are responsible for 5 deaths, 60 injuries more than $15 million in property damage a year. one option head to bgr burger joint in bethesda, bring your thawed out turkey they will fry it for you for free isn't that cool. >> what is the catch. >> nothing just first come first served 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. today. >> very generous bgr. >> maybe all of them i wonder if it is we should find out. just bethesda? >> okay. all right well, moving on nba says it is hoping for an end to the lock out by christmas. >> that is not soon enough for
9:37 am
9:40 am
some nba season ticket holders are tired of waiting for the lookout to end in new york dozens of fans gathered outside madson square garden, the crowd included local lawmakers and leaders and claim the city lost more than $1 million because of game cancellation they want a million signatures from fans to force an end to it the group is demanding a full refund from the team immediately. >> also to football, red skins may play inland over maryland, mayor grey says he would like to see them return to dc in some capacity. skins currently train in virginia, but mayor grey recently took a trip to tampa florida to examine the
9:41 am
buccaneers training facility, grey says he has had discussions with dan schneider about bringing training into the district so far no deal is in place. well, there is plenty of football today, fox 5 is kicking it off, pregame starts 11:30 a.m. this morning then see the detroit lions host the packers at 12:30 stay tuned for nfl post game here on fox 5. >> gets you ready for it just part of thanksgiving. >> he talked one on one with some of the biggest names in movies, so what celebrity interview is kevin mccarthy most thankful for. we will hear from him up next. >> time to start planning out those holiday gifts we have a creative idea for you and derek thomas shows us how to arrange a gift garden for your friends and loved ones coming up ouououu paying more and more for cable and enjoying it less and less? stop paying for second best. upgrade to verizon fios and get tv, internet and phone

you can be creative with garden gifts this holiday season. derek thomas shows how to put together arrangements for special people in your life take a look. >> you thing we don't have to spend a lot of money to create a gift that looks like a lot of money. >> you don't these gift baskets, these gift containers, are like $80 investments if you have someone you want to give a hoe teases gift to why not put together one yourself -- hostess gift why not put one together yourself. >> the most expensive plant was $6 what you want to do is use 3 to 5 plants in the arrangement, you want to try to pick plants with different textures like this one here, i think would be great i want you to do one i will do one i am going to actually use the little palm tree, now the root ball on this
9:46 am
is a little large but what you can do is and i will go ahead and take care of that, just to refresh this, if you will, you can cut about a third of the root ball away, safely, so that way, that fits into there, if it has a hole there you want to put a film there, just to prevent this from going out. i want you to pick out two additional plants. >> i love it. >> then the ivy one. >> variegated or green. >> this one. >> what you want to do is break up the root mass just pull it apart a little bit and put that into your container and go ahead and do the same with the ivy i will start with the palm, we will have the palm set up there, i think i will use the variegated ivy in mine, we will put that there and i actually want to adjust a bit of pop to mine so i am going to use this
9:47 am
lime green philodendron. >> what am i adding to mine? >> we will take the soil now, add that to the top just a little bit, and then, there we go, perfect. put that around there. >> not the cleanest. >> if you want to you can add shredded hard wood mulch all this is available at the garden center add that, and now what i want to do is add decorative stones, here we go. >> thank you derek. >> you are welcome >> as i rip my plant apart. i will add some too. the mulch to mine and then pop that out, by adding some of the stone, right there,. >> is it tacky to say and i made this for you. >> you know what, you can -- i would say yeah, tell them, let them know you put it together
9:48 am
let them know you spent some time creating a wonderful gift for them you put some thought in it you know you've got the girls alison you could get them involved. >> this is great for them. >> then straiten that up a little bit top that out i will help you right on this side pop this out and see what we've got there is two really nice gift containers that we have spent the time to put together, and they work. now, what about if you are in a pinch. really quickly,. >> yes. >> get a plant, get a nice container, plop it in, take some of this -- this is a great moss it is dyed this is going to add that you know contrast that i am saying we need, and there. voila. >> voila. >> s will than 2 seconds we created a -- in less than 2 seconds we created a gift container. >> these are fantastic you know for my ideas like this i am
