vehicles from the roadway. a big back up here. traffic is losing the three left lanes over. there goes the tow truck. now if we can get the state trooper out, we will have all lanes open. north on i-95 a lot of bailout traffic on route 1. eastbound on 66, it's slow out of centreville to 123 in vienna. accident off to the shoulder there. outer loop of the beltway, delays 95 college park to georgia avenue. u.s. the icc, it's still free between laurel and gaithersburg this morning. traveling northbound 301 the accident activity will slow you down there. follow the police direction in order to get by. 270 south, 109 to montrose, about a 24 minute commute. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. a third elderly man carjacked in montgomery county in less than a week. >> police believe the same man is behind the attacks.

sherri ly is live with the details. scary stuff. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, allison and steve. this suspect seems to follow the same mo. he strikes in the parking lot at wheaton plaza shopping mall in the same general very -- vicinity. the latest happened yesterday, a 77-year-old man was carjacked outside the target store. the suspect appears to be going after the elderly in the middle of the day and he uses a box cutter or a large knife. yesterday's carjacking comes after a similar case on saturday in the giant parking lot at the same plaza. police say a 60-year-old man was forced into his car at knifepoint, drove to an atm to withdraw cash. the suspect stole $380, then left the victim unharmed and walked to a metro station to escape. the first carjacking took place the day before thanksgiving also at the giant in wheat ton

plaza. in that case the suspect went after a 75-year-old man. police say the suspect armed with a knife made the victim take out money from atms. in that case the victim was not hurt either. the carjacker got dropped off at a metro administration in d.c. he escaped by bus or metro rail. investigators say the suspect description in all three cases appears similar and believe it is the same man. now, the big concern is that the suspect appears to be getting more violent. in yesterday's case the latest victim was found by someone passing by in hyattsville. the victim, the 77-year-old was in the passenger seat injured. police say that he was cut with that box cutter and beaten. that's the latest in wheaton, back to you. >> sherri ly, thank you. two women are in detroit call condition after -- critical condition after being pulled out of a burning house

in hyattsville. flames were reported around 3:45 yesterday morning. a third woman escaped but a 6- year-old boy died. the home did not have working smoke alarms. the cause is under investigation. firefighters will be out in the neighborhood to hand out and check smoke detectors. no arrests after a deadly fight outside of a dupont circle nightclub over the weekend. the fit started inside heritage indian restaurant and nightclub then out to connecticut avenue where three people were shot and three people were stabbed. one died at the hospital. police hope video from nearby security cameras will help track down the people involved. cathy lanier ordered the club closed until an investigation is wrapped up. the man accused of firing shots at the white house is due in court today. he was ordered to undergo a psycho 0 log -- psychological

evaluation. a georgetown university student is out of an egyptian jail and back home with his family this morning. >> so glad to see you. >> derek sweeney arrived in st. louis late saturday night after spending a week in an egyptian jail after throwing fire bombs at police. he describes his frightening experience. >> it was very, very frightening. that first evening was probably the most scary things in our lives, the most frightening thing in our life. and they said they were going to shoot us if we moved and we spent about six hours the first night in fetal positions. >> sweeney said the accusations against him are false. developing in egypt today, the first parliamentary

elections taking place since mubarak months ago. they stood in long lines well before they opened, a rare sign of interest in political activity. returning to u.s. politics now, a surge in the race for the republican presidential nomination. newt gingrich picked up a huge endorsement that may knock mitt romney down. the union leader is endorsing again grip. it comes six weeks before the state's first in the nation primary. in recent polls romney holds a lead over gingrich in new hampshire of more than 20 points. the trial of an aide to bob gur lock will begin today. robo calls are automated phone calls that deliver a prerecorded message. a consultant was charged in the

case and had his trial postponed until february. this is shaping up to be a banner day on wall street thanks to black friday and the holiday shopping outlook. it may help investors recoup losses after a painful month. >> reporter: two big things are driving the things on wall street. consumer spending and european debt concerns. what makes it unusual, there is good news on both fronts. this may be music to retailers ears today. cyber monday for online sellers it's their version of black friday. the post thanksgiving combination of door buster bargains and bent up consumer demand that seems to have exceeded expectations this year. >> for the most part, people are in a better position than three or four years ago, they paid down debt. they are a little comfortable shopping. >> reporter: that translated into big sales through the

holiday weekend. a record number of shoppers spent an average of $400 apiece, up $35 over last year. this is what wall street wants to hear that consumer sentiment may be turning around. there is other good news driving overseas markets higher through the night including watered that the imf may rise to the rescue in italy helping trough prop upper -- to prop upper rope. >> u.s. economic data and most important would be the parole data released each friday. >> reporter: new unemployment numbers are out later this week and we will see if any new jobs are behind what appears to be a real shopping spree. and we will get fresh data on the u.s. housing market to see if there are any signs that housing prices are bottoming out. >> thank you. a long time syracuse

at&t in los angeles, occupy protestors are staying put despite an order to take down their camps and leave after midnight. a park near city hall is packed

with demonstrators. they expect to start making arrests at some point. in philadelphia, protestors were ordered to leave there but refused. they seem peaceful now with no arrests yet. syracuse university has fired men's basketball assistant coach bernie fine after a third man accused fine of molesting him nine years ago. two syracuse ball boys were the first to come forward. the head coach of the men's basketball team says he supports the university's decision and calls the new allegations disturbing and troubling. on friday the fbi searched fine fine maintains his innocence. well, it appears that there will be an nba season after all. over the weekend, league owners and players reached a tentative deal to ends the lockout. it would include a 66 game season ending about ten days later than usual. the regular season would start christmas day and run through april 26th. i don't think the play-offs

will run through august. that requires teams to play one set of back to back games. good news is, looks like they will be back. christmas has been a big day for the nba. >> we talked about this before. i saw a good comprehensive piece on how this affects everyone, the people that work at the big venues, they have been out of work. it's devastating for the people who can't afford it. >> not just the players but the vendors and outline that kind of thing. that's good. hopefully everybody will be back up and running. >> we have good news. you saw some of the live shots we have been taking out there. there is a lot of clouds but a nice start to the day. temperatures are mild. it will be a mild day today. not as pretty as over the weekend but not bad. let's take a look at our current temperatures around the region. we are still primarily in the 50s. in washington, we remain at 53 degrees. annapolis remains at 57

degrees. 50 manassas. baltimore at 47 degrees. there is 60s as well. leonardtown as 61. cambridge, maryland at 61 degrees. the bigger picture as far as the temperatures go, it's mild across the eastern united states. but out to the west, when you get to ohio, indiana, michigan, places like that, temperatures drop off into the 30s. that colder air makes its way into our region by the later part of this week. get ready for changes. meanwhile, satellite and radar, as i mentioned, plenty of clouds out there. there is precipitation in western portions of west virginia, ohio, kentucky, places like that. eventually it moves in here. that won't happen until late tonight. our winds are calm. it will be breezy gradually by tonight and into tomorrow. right now the winds are calm in washington. they are blowing about 7 miles per hour in annapolis. 5 at dulles. today the high about 6. mostly cloudy. there will be sun here and

for their kids. the associated press found that in eight states more than one in 20 public school kindergartener aren't getting all the vaccines for attendance. more parents are seeking exemptions. health officials are worried there could be outbreaks of diseases like measles and whooping cough. president obama's wear draw down is having a rippling effect for soldiers. 900 have been sent home early or plans to sends them to battle have been shelved or clanged. many soldiers that put their lives on hold getting ready for deployment are heading back home and unemployed. the pressure is on. congress is picking up the pieces for the super committee super failure. they need to decide whether to save a tax cut that could impact how much take you home in your paycheck. as we take you to break, a live look outside at 7:28. the latest weather and traffic from tony and julie up next.

are squaring off on their next budget. joining us and the latest from the campaign trail, david rear. good to see you. >> thanks for having me. >> last week the talk was on the failure of the super committee. hopefully now on a monday we can move forward. a lot of fallout coming from that especially as we talk taxes toward the new year. >> that's right. senate democrats want to have higher taxes to recoast the cuts in spending. house wants to -- the president vowed to vet to any change in the original deal. i think it will be a stalemate for a while. >> we looked at the impact of not just the failure of the super committee but we look at it philosophically that they couldn't get anything done. how damage is that? >> you saw the market fall

dramatically. the fact that america is in a malaise, it's damaging to the economy. there is $1.3 trillion in cash held by corporations in america. they are not investing because there is uncertainty coming from washington. >> taxes are front and center. this year, 11, but changes could come january first. we have to have an agreement. can we get things done here? >> i don't think. congress waits until the last minute to be the heros. i think the senate is so far off from the house, i think we will see more uncertainty as we go forward. >> what happens if nothing is done when it comes to the payroll tax. if that does lapse, what signal does that set going into 2012. >> that's unclear. we are not sure that the payroll tax reduction has created more jobs. just todayment cbo is coming out with a report that says the

stimulus package didn't do what everyone thought it would do. a lot of people thought it was bad for the economy. i think we are in a quagmire until we have bold action by the president or congress to get a hold of spending and say to the community we will get the house in order. >> one thing that republicans wanted in 2012 is new leadership. the g.o.p. candidates continue to battle it out. right now the flavor of the week goes to newt gingrich, another endorsement over the weekend. he is on top of the polls. >> he is running an unconventional campaign. no media yet, no mailings in iowa, the first caucus state in 36, 37 days. but i think you need to watch. he is bringing this bold frankness that a lot of republican voters are looking for. >> and i say flavor of the week because perry had a sharp speck up then back down, herman cain. >> michele bachmann. >> will it be the same with newt gingrich or can he hold

making headlines, police in ohio say a craigslist ad looking for a farmhand lured victims instead into a death trap. the shooting of one man, the deaths of three others are being linked to that listing. one break in the case came when a man from south carolina was shot in the arm after responding to the add called to a so-called interview. he was able to escape and

inform authorities. a 16-year-old student has been charged with attempted murder. this 52-year-old man, richard beasley is in jail on unrelated charges. prince william called into action in a frantic rescue mission off the northern coast of whales. the duke of cambridge copiloted a helicopter in an attempt to save the crew of eight on board a cargo ship with a cracked hull. the tricky thing here, gale force winds. they rescued two of the ships crew. one body was found at sea. no complaints about the weather this weekend. >> it was great. absolutely fantastic. we have a slow transition into cooler weather. it will take a couple of days. so, we can enjoy today, too. we will have mild temperatures, maybe not in the 70s but not too bad. let's take a look at yesterday's high temperatures. we set a record at dulles. reagan up to 72.

the traffic camera is turned. there is a delay here at connecticut and georgia. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. >> thank you very much. our top story, a third elderly man carjacked at a shopping center in wheaton, maryland. police believe it's the same suspect behind all the attacks that started last wednesday. sherri ly is there with all the details. sherri. >> good morning, steve. the suspect appears to be getting more violent in the carjackings. the latest victim a 77-year-old man was carjacked outside the target store here at the wheaton plaza shopping center. it's the third time in less than a week. this victim was cut with a box cutter and beaten. all three happened at the wheaton plaza. on saturday a 60-year-old was carjacked in the giant parking lot and forced to withdraw money from the atm. the suspect took the cash, about $380 then took off from a metro station in northwest d.c.

the victim was not hurt. that came after another carjacking just a day before thanksgiving. the suspects forced the victim into his car at knifepoint from the same parking lot at wheaton plaza. police say he made the 75-year- old drive to various atms to take out money. again, the carjacker took the cash and got away at a metro station in d.c. that victim was not hurt either. in the most recent case yesterday, the suspect forced a victim to take him to hyattsville and made his escape. someone spotted the injured victim in the passenger seat and called police. now, police only have a general description of this suspect but say in all of the cases, that description is very similar and they do believe that the same person is responsible for all of these crimes. i can tell you from looking at the shopping mall there are cameras everywhere. police aren't saying if they

university's assistant basketball coach of molesting him as a young boy. this allegedly happened nine years ago. bernie fine was fired. in a statement, syracuse said at the direction of the chancellor, bernie fine's employment with syracuse has been permanent effective immediately. two former ball boys were the first to accuse fine. bobby davis gave an audiotape that he made with fine's wife. on the tape, lori fine reportedly said she knew everything that went on. she went ton saber knee has issues, maybe that he is not aware of but he has issues and you trusted somebody you shouldn't have trusted. >> the head coach stood behind bernie fine. he has been out publicly saying he is my guy. i have known him and we have done a full thorough report. now syracuse fires him. it will be interesting to see what happens to bay home as this goes on. >> he calls it disturbing and

troubling saying i am personally very shocked because i never witnessed any of the activities that have been alleged. i believe the university took the appropriate steps. he goes on to say he deeply regrets any statements that he made that might have been insensitive to victims of abuse. on friday, federal authorities carried out a nine hour search at fine's home. officers carted away three file cabinets and a computer for further examination. now, fine had been on administrative leave before he was fired. he says the allegations are false. allison, back to you. >> thank you so much. now to the latest at the scandal at penn state. police say they received a letter from a person that says he was possibly assaulted by jerry sandusky. this comes from a man incarcerated in oklahoma. he is charged with sexually abusing eight boys over a 15 year period. two more possible accusers's

done before they send the plants out to home depot. they are giving us tips. good morning once again. >> good morning, holly. last hour we talked about poinsettias. but you said last hour that poinsettias are not outside plants. >> correct. >> a lot of people do want to put things outside. so, where do we begin with those. >> a lot of great options. what i enjoy are plants that you can leave in containers or plant as a landscape plant. >> this is a good investment. you buy it and it's great for the holidays. you can keep it. >> if i want to keep it in the container, what is the best way to preserve it. >> with the temperatures we have been having being unseasonally warm, water it once or twice a week. going into some of these bigger containers, they don't need quite as much water.

>> you can leave it outside. >> absolutely. >> you don't have to cover it and bring it in when it gets cold. >> we don't plant them until spring. >> if it stays in the 70s which we hope we have some cold for christmas, you want to wait for spring. the maritime line is a great time to plant them in the yard. >> poinsettias, we touched on the different varieties and what is out there. let's talk about size differential. >> a couple of sizes, the 6 1/2 inch, that's the starter size. those are great for table tops, great gift items, your standard poinsettias, you can put five or six around the tree. this is a 10-inch here. those are great for the floor. i got three or four around a big display we do at the house and they just make a big great presence there and they are good for a single if you have a long dining cable instead of a big expansive centerpiece, a

large poinsettia looks great. >> when you put them on the floor, there is talk that they are poisonous. >> they will make you sick. >> don't eat them. >> don't eat them. >> what if you have pets. >> be careful with the pets. it will make them sick. not going to kill them but you want to make sure that you are careful around the pets. >> how do you get them to rebloom. never been able to do it myself. >> that's always tricky. the key is to keep them dark. about the 10th of october, if you are trying to get them rebloomed, go about 14 days of total dark. we have to be careful here where we block out car headlights. >> you are talking dark dark. >> yes. >> then they come back. >> yes. you want to talk about the special containers. >> some of the different stuff you have, we have some of the decorative finish containers. this is the old is new again. 20 years ago, these were all
