carjackings that happened at the wheaten plaza shopping center over this past week. joining me with more information on this investigation is captain paul starks with montgomery county police. give us an idea, we had released surveillance video earlier in the week. first off, what information do you have today and did that help out in this arrest? >> it did. we do have a suspect in custody in prince george's county. he's being held there on the strength of a warrant we have charging him with multiple counts of robbery and carjacking, relling to the three events that occurred in the wheaten area over the thanksgiving weekend. the media coverage and community interest really helped us from the beginning of this week. >> reporter: any information we can release now about who this suspect is? >> he is being identified as henry levi sanders, age 50 of

landover. >> reporter: give us an idea, too, in that area, do you think folks were on heightened alert, did this help in getting this person into custody? >> again, the video that we released and the extensive coverage by the media, the community interest, i can't point to 1 thing now, i can't confirm that, but there was a lot of information coming in, and detectives were able to run with it. >> reporter: we had been talking about this was three elderly men these carjackings took place, it was at the shopping center. any more information we can gain, that you can tell us now about how this person was brought in, where things go from here? >> that's something i don't want to confirm now. even though we're only two hours away from a press conference, we're still confirming some details, and i want that to be released at the

conference. >> reporter: captain paul starks, thank you again for talking with us. suspect in custody in these carjackings. he is 50-year-old henry levi sanders of landover, maryland. a press conference is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. that's the latest in rockville, tony, allison, back to you. >> thank you very much. another big story we're following, authorities in connecticut extradited the suspected east coast rapist back to virginia. >> he faced a judge via a video hookup and our stacey cohan is live at the courthouse with the new details. good morning. >> reporter: this was a brief hearing that started at 8:30 at the courthouse in manassas. aaron thomas appeared by video. he was questioned by the judge. first the judge read him the list of charges, which include charges of rape, use of a

firearm in commission of a y, a charges. all these charges stemmed from an incident in 2009 on halloween, when he is accused of abducting little girls while they were trick or treating, and raping them. it is what has been described as a brutal and heinous crime. when asked if he understood the charges, aaron thomas looked down, mumbled and said, no. the judge asked what he didn't understand, asked repeatedly, and thomas finally simply asked for an attorney. at that point, judge bailey said, clearly you know enough to ask for an attorney, so he decided to proceed ahead. he assigned him a court appointed attorney and set a hearing for january 25th, that will be a probable cause hearing. we spoke briefly to the prosecutor, and he has been here a long time throughout the many, many years they've been searching for the east coast rapist. he says he thinks it's important this man get off the streets. he believes they have the correct person, and he could

face many life terms if convicted. we'll have more on this story as we continue to follow it. i'm stacey cohan, back to you. >> thank you. a federal judge will hear testimony today on whether the man who shot president reagan should be allowed additional visits to his mother's virginia home and be released to his family's care. john hinckley has been in a mental decision since 1982. his attorneys say he is no longer a threat. the hearing may last up to a week and a half. not clear whether hinckley will testify. gaithersburg man suspected in the disappearance of a woman in aruba is free and could be leaving aruba this morning. new video shows gary giordano leaving a jail last night after almost four months in detention. a judge in aruba said the prosecutors failed to present enough evidence to hold him. he claims robyn gardner was swept out to sea while they were snorkeling. prosecutors are still trying to build a case against him and

will appeal the release at a hearing later this morning. gary giordano has hired the same lawyer who defended casey anthony. dr. murray was intrigued by the prospect and he engaged in this money for medicine madness that is simply not going to be tolerated by me. >> the judge in the trial of michael jackson's doctor throwing the book at dr. murray, sentencing him to the max, four years in prison and slamming the doctor, saying he was motivated by money, fame and prestige and cared more about himself. despite the four-year sentence, murray is expected to get out two years early because of overcrowding in california jails. his lawyers say the judge was too critical and are planning an appeal. other stories making headlines, there are calls for

changes in the way after hours clubs do business in the district. three men were shot, three others stabbed during a brawl outside the club sunday morning. a man died. d.c. council member jack evans is considering a plan to force the nightclubs to pay d.c. police for patrols outside clubs. a fire that killed a 6-year- old boy over the weekend in prince george's county. his mom and aunt also passed away. there is only one survivor. she tried to wake up her daughter and sister, but they didn't make it. the fire chief says there was not a single working smoke detector in that house. turning to economic protests, first in los angeles, where police in riot gear surrounded city hall and arrested more than 200 occupy protestors, two days after the

mayor issued a deadline for them to get out. hundreds stayed inside tents, saying they are ready for the police raid. more of the same in philadelphia, where police also moved in to break up a protest early this morning. protestors were warned three times to leave before police started pulling down tents around 1:00 in the morning. more than a half dozen were arrested. in the race for the white house, republican presidential candidate herman cain makes a calendar change that has some questioning if he's getting ready to drop out of the race. cain has been under fire for high profile allegations of an affair and sexual harassment brought forward by several women. yesterday cain told aides he is reassessing his run. the move came one day after a georgia woman said she had a more than 13 year affair with cain. in a conference call, he said he'll only commit to campaign appearances over the next several days. in the district, marion

thank you so much. the judge has handed down the sentence, four years in prison. this prompter is not working. thank you. four years in prison for dr. conrad murray. he was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the death of michael jackson. how is the jackson name responding? good morning to you. we're allison and tucker. nice to see you. >> hey, what's happening? >> nice to see you, too. how are you doing? >> doing pretty good today. so, conrad murray gets the maximum sentence. might do half, because the jails are so crowded out there in california. what has the reaction been from the jacksons? >> well, katherine jackson went on right after the sentencing thing, basically that she was happy with the decision, that four years is not enough, but that was the maximum allotted. so she said, it's not going to bring her son back, but she's

happy the judge gave him the maximum sentence. the judge basically threw the book at dr. conrad murray, saying he saw no remorse, referencing his documentary, saying in the documentary, basically murray blames everyone but himself and shows no remorse for what he did. it's interesting that he referenced that documentary, because it's sort of like something that happened after the trial. it aired after the trial, and everybody talking about how murray shot himself in the book by doing this documentary, obviously now that we know the judge watched it and was influenced by it. interesting development in the story. >> is four years a surprise or pretty much expected by people informationing the trial? >> you know, it's interesting that you ask that. it's a great question, but a lot of people didn't think he was going to get the maximum four years. the judge could have given him two, three, or four years and decided to give him four years. one of the reasons he says he gave him the four years was

that famous recording of michael jackson, remember that whole slurry speech recording that conrad murray had? he said he thought that murray used that recording to, you know, to sort of use that as a weapon if things would go bad later on. he thought that was a clear indicator that his heart was not in the right place. a very interesting sort of insight into the judge's mind. >> all right, speaking of fascinating, charlie sheen is in columbia. what's he doing down there? >> you know, it's interesting, because we have our morning meeting every morning, and someone pitched that story and all they said was, charlie sheen is in colombia, because it sounds like the beginning of a joke. he tells us he's in colombia to do location scouting for his next movie. he's going to remake a movie
