it's pretty out there. currently, 35 degrees here in washington, 28 in baltimore. 27 degrees in virginia. ocean city, it's 27 degrees. here is a look at the satellite. things look good. there are some clouds on the horizon as you have seen. i do think we'll get only clouds in here late in the afternoon or during evening hours but for the bulk the day, forecast. when i say warm, no. but warmer, 51 degrees for your high in town. that's a good at the weather. now let's get an update on traffic with julie wright. >> drive down north bound on i- 95, working your way northbound heading up towards the capital beltway, that's where we have the accident activity tying up the right side of the highway.

north bound on 95 right at the decision point to go to tysons are right at the outer loop of the beltway or going to virginia, that's where you have the gridlock. we'll take you inside. as you continue to work your way northbound on i-95, it is at a crawl out of woodbridge. now, making your way all the way to the beltway and heading toward the wilson bridge, this is where we have some problem. accident activity on telegraph road he is blocking your lane. average speed at van dorn street, 35 miles per hour as you head towards the bridge. that's a look at your fox 5. a somber scene at virginia tech as students gathered to

remember the officer skilled. about 150 people came together to honor the fallen officer and comfort each other. another vigil is planned today within minutes of the officer being gunned down, the campus was put on lockdown. bob has the latest now. good morning, bob. >> good morning, allison and steve. >> we still don't know what was behind this shooting, this deadly shooting, whether the gunman and the officer maybe knew each other, whether it was completely random. the gunman's identity has not been released. we don't know the motive. however, police late last night did identify the police officer, derek crouse, an army veteran, married, the father of five chirp children and step -- five children and step children.

he was shot and within minutes, alerts went out. the bizarre thing, a half hour later, there was the report of another person shot dead which turned out to be the gunman. within hours, the campus was on lockdown. nobody knew what was going on. the report was that a gunman was on the loose, two people were dead, including a police officer, a very terrifying time here. late yesterday, unfortunate police officials described a little bit about what happened in terms of the shooting which came during a traffic stop and involved not the person who was stopped in the car but another person who came upon the scene. here is what they said. >> 12:30 p.m., virginia tech plays received a first call advising they had witnessed a subject approach the officer

and fire a weapon at the officer and then leave the scene. >> he just fell out towards the ground and i saw his face. >> a very traumatic experience for that young freshman. according to virginia state police who are heading up the investigation, there was a dashboard camera in the officer's car that captured an image of the gunman. he was dressed in a certain way that was put out in an alert. the reason, i believe, there was a four-hour delay between the time the second victim was found and the word came out at that that was, in fact, the gunman was the fact that he had changed his clothes. virginia police say they found a back pack on campus late in the afternoon with the clothes matching the one that wins had told police about and also seen on the dashboard camera. ballistic tests overnight do

bullet. he is listed in critical condition. today is sentencing day for a councilwoman for her role in a corruption scheme. >> reporter: leslie johnson is not here yet. the hearing is not scheduled until 10:30. she will find out how much she will get. the federal government is asking for 12 years. but her attorney is asking for probation. leslie johnson was got with her husband at that sentencing.

she was now famous with that infamous wire tap as she was stuffing $80,000 in her pa and stuffing the money in her toilet as the fbi closed in on her home. the process can take a few hours. again, that hearing is scheduled to start at 10:30 this morning. it would be expected that leslie johnson would likely show up an hour to 30 minutes ahead of that time and go into the courtroom. it's unclear if her husband, jack johnson, will be here with us. as i mentioned, she was not here when he was sentenced earlier this week. >> thank you, sherrie. police in prince george's county are asking for your help in finding this missing 12-year-

old boy. he was last seen at walking middle school. he might not have gone back home of a being disciplined at home. he is described as a black male, brown eyes, 4'9", 85 pounds an anne arundel county teacher is accused of having sexual contact with three of his students. 29-year-old jeffrey sears, jr. had sex with the girls between november of 2009 and this year. investigators say that the incident took place on and off the campus of glen burnie high school. he is charged with multiple counts including sexual abuse of a minor. school officials removed his-of- him from the classroom. more evidence that newt

are be a slutsly untrue. donna sandusky denied that she was home during one of the attacks and did not do anything to stop it. jerry sandusky has been charged with two more abuses and he is now under house arrest after posting bail new video of robert levinson who has vanished in iran. the video was sent to his family in florida. the u.s. government did not want it released saying it would jeopardize he was to bring him home. these efforts have stalled and his wife is releasing it along with an appeal to the kidnappers. a midnight deadline has come and gone for occupy boston protesters to leave their encampment but they stayed and so far, police have not moved in. throughout the night, they chanted "we are the 99%" and

a shot of the pentagon this weekend. don't be alarmed, it's just a drill. officials will test a new gunshot detection system. shots are fired anywhere near the pentagon. authorities say they will restrict public access around at yair. sunday between 6:00 a.m. and noon. turns out stress may have a lot to do with the odds of delivering a baby boy. scientists study pregnant women following the 2005 earthquake in chile. they checked birth certificates for all chilean babies for the two years after. the more stressed the woman was, the less likely she was likely to give birth to a baby boy. >> it's certainly stressing out at the white house and on capitol hill.

the federal payroll. coming here is richard cohen. welcome to the studio. great to be here. >> this payroll deadline is coming fast. >> it's real. >> congress said they are not going to leave town and even work through the holidays until this issue is resolved. in other word, that the payroll tax cut will expire by the end of this year or three weeks from now unless congress acts and if congress does not act, then we'll all have the pleasure of a tax increase starting january 1. not many people want to have a tax increase. there is a lot of pressure on congress to take care of this problem. the president himself has said that he is not going on his vacation to hawaii unless this

isresolved. >> a off lot of things have not been resolved. it's been a tough year. with the republicans running the house and the democrats running the senate, they have been struggling to do anything. when the republicans took control of the house, they said they wanted to cut spending and they wanted to attack the deficit and we also know, in the last few weeks, congress had the super committee. that failed. so the record is not good for this congress, this session. the public is very unhappy. yet, there is pressure, big pressure to get this done. no wawnts to have a tax increase. >> we said it earlier, this affects every single person with a job and a paycheck. >> that's right. >> for the average person, average family, it's as much as $1000 per worker for the year.

you probably didn't know you had that 1000-dollar pay cut this year. >> you will feel it later if you get. >> about the vacation, much has been said about the president's vacations. he just happened to be from hawaii, one of other most beautiful state, but is the perception also there that this is a bad time for president obama to go on an extended vacation? >> as you say, that's where he has spent the area where he grew up where he is taking his family to hawaii every year, every christmas holiday time. there is the assumption he has been planning to go this time. but after the white house announced a week or two ago that he would be going, the president subsequently said that he is not going unless and until this issue is resolved, even though, frankly, he is not

a big part of the discussion. he does have the veto pen because there are some steps that the republicans in the house are saying they would take some steps. the president said that would force him to veto the bill. we'll see. in any case, he has said he is not going to hawaii until this is finished. >> let's switch gears and talk about the latest poll coming out from fox news national poll showing that newt gingrich is 13 points ahead of mitt romney, head and shoulders above everybody else. what can you say about the staying power of newt gingrich? >> it's amazing. newt gingrich is the latest republican to emerge as the challenger to mitt romney. we have seen others who have come, whether it's governor perry of texas or herman cain

or michele bachmann. each have emerged to take on romney. gingrich in the final month before the iowa caucus which is january 3rd, gingrich appears to be in pretty good shape but who knows because it's become completely unpredictable. from a congressional washington perspective, it's interesting because he is a former speaker of the house. a lot of people that we called back in 1990s, he was a pretty controversial figure. so we'll see. >> we are out of town. i was going to ask you one question covering the hill. have you ever seen as crazy as what we are seeing right now? >> never seen it that keeps us on roll. >> yes. allegation of an attack on

headlines today, we begin overseas in india where a hospital fire has killed 70 patients, more than 70. a medical staff accused of abandoning them as the building burped. officials say that many victims died of smoke inhalation. police filed a case against the hospital for violating safety procedures and is now working to cancel its license. >> new surveillance video from

did he have any kind of prior connection to the officer who was shot dead here on campus yesterday afternoon? the man who was killed yesterday was 39-year-old derek crouse, veteran of the army, father of five, married. he was in a parking lot here, had pulled over a car when virginia state police who were heading up the investigation said that a man walked up and opened fire on officer crouse who was sitting in his car. the unfortunate put out the alert within six minutes tell faculty, staff and students that had been a shooting on campus. a half hour later, police found a man dead of a gunshot wound. for four hours, the thinking was that there was a gunman on the loose who had shot two

people. it was not until four hours later that the authority gave the all-clear, telling everyone that they believe that the second victim was actually the gunman. it has turned out that they did find a weapon that overnight was matched with the police officer. there was a stand down and a great deal of relief but also sadness because the officer was murdered. last night on campus, near the memorial to the 2007 massacre here at virginia tech, there was a vigil. many student, about 150 or so students. and the overall thinking was that the university got high marks for getting the alerts out every half hour, letting everybody know that there was a shooting incident and programs the gun man was on the loose for as long as four hours which turned out not to be true. high marks for university official, some of whom were actually in washington yesterday.

they were in the nation's capital appealing a $55,000 fine issued by the u.s. department of education for the unfortunate's initial response to the shooting in april of 2007. steve and allison, 32 people were shot death. that case was the shooter himself here. >> scary the way that things were playing out yesterday, bob. thank you very much. a virginia state trooper is recuperating from surgery this morning after being shot on the side of the road. now, this happened yesterday afternoon on i-95 south and caroline county. police say that the treerp stopped to pick up a pedestrian walking daunte interstate. there was a struggle and both he and the suspect fired shots. the officer is identified as m. h. hammer. the suspect was also shot. he is listed in critical condition. don't be alarmed if you hear gunshots at the pentagon this weekend.

the holidays and their friend and they wait a little too long to get in the doctor. >> does the cold weather play a role in this at all? >> that's another good point. cold weather does increase the work of the heart but interestingly, heart attacks occur in warm weather as well. but the picture of the man with a cigarette sticking out of his house, shoveling the snow, absolutely, those things predispose you to that. >> what do you do for your heart, body and miewnd? >> people do feel stress and it's not uncommon. fur feeling stress, take a timeout, maybe lay down for a few minute, get away from your family for an hour. if you feel your heart rate increase, get a

headache, slow down. and don't drink alcohol. there is a condition known as holiday heart syndrome where your heart goes into a faster rim simply because you are drinking too much alcohol. >> is that something that goes away or is that something that goes away after the season? >> if you do notice your heart is going fast on regular and having any dizziness, then you should seek medical attention right away. after a few minute, stop drinking but talk to your doctor about it. >> and that's what i want to ask you. a lot of type, we might feel some type of symptom, how do we know if there really is something dang rust for the heart or maybe it's just take a breather for a few minutes and relax and this will get better. that goes back to the regular morning symptoms of heart attacks and heart pain. if you are having heaviness, pressure, squeezing in the

chest, radiating to the neck, the arms, the jaw, break out in a cold sweat, feel short of breath with simple exhaustion, you need to seek medical attention right away. if you feel stressed, maybe overdid it, take something. one thing that i like to mention to allison, women have as much heart disease if not more than men. more women die of heart attacks than men. >> this is kind of amplified if you already have a condition perhaps with the holiday. the holiday heart syndrome where the heart becomes fast and irregular, that with be one of the symptoms an of of an underlying heart condition. heart attack is a siler end killer. that's why we say know your numbers. we are on a big downer here for the holidays but the point is that we want to make sure that

this is really the last opportunity for all the candidates to make an impression on statewide and nationwide tv, not just in iowa but, of course, across the nation. >> fox news just coming out with the national poll showing that newt gingrich is head and shoulders above the rest of the pack. what do you make of this, chris? >> i don't know what to make, honestly. it's clear that he got a lot of support from herman cain and what he has done, newt has done very well in the debates which stress how important they can be. the question is, we have seen some other peernlings bachmann, cain, rick perry, come and go. can newt sustain it? he is different because he has been a national figure for, what, 15 years or so. so, you know, he is much more known commodity but he has, like all these candidates, some strengths and weaknesses. it will be interesting to see whether he can stay on that front slot as the otheranti-
