today. after a cold start expecting temperatures in the 50s. kick it on with your headline, 50s for today and the new year's weekend. well into the 50s both saturday and sunday and if you got plans new year's eve, conditions should be just fine with overnight lows in the upper 30s and low 40s. let's do temperatures right now at reagan national, 37, cold out there, bring along a jacket, 31 in baltimore and at dulles, 32 in fredericksburg. looking at your satellite radar, cloud cover, kind of a repeat performance of yesterday. we will be partly sunny today but should be dry and again with winds out of the south here we are going to warm things up into the low 50s for afternoon highs, so this forecast generally a good one. partial sunshine, warmer temperatures than yesterday when we hit 44, 52 today and even warmer saturday and sunday. i'll have details on that coming up in just a few minutes. tas it back to you. >> thanks. new this morning, a stabbing outside a d.c. nightclub. this happened outside of mood lounge in the 1300 block of 9th street northwest overnight.

police confirmed two men were stabbed, one in the stomach, the other stabbed in the back. there is no word this morning on their condition. d.c. mayor vince gray and police chief cathy lanier holding a news conference today to call attention to the city's homicide rate. currently 108 homicides in 2011. if that holds, it would be the lowest since the early 1960s. now, that's a major improvement over the 479 homicides recorded back in 1991 when the city was in the midst of a crack epidemic. mayor gray attributes the decline in part to community policing and strong neighborhood leadership. investigators are looking into whether speed played a factor in a deadly accident on the beltway. kevin hinnant, jr. of lower maryland was killed when he crashed his motorcycle on the outer loop near colesville road in silver spring. witnesses say hinnant lost control and hit a guardrail. blamed in that will be -- lanes in that area were shut down but since reopened. a grand jury indicted the

maryland man accused of murdering his wife and son. he's accused of stabbing jane mcqueen to death in her germantown apartment in october then taking her 11-year-old son william to a wooded area and beating him to death. lopez is set to be arraigned january 6th. there's a possible break in the case of a missing lineman from maryland. mitchell smith left union station december 16th headed to birmingham, alabama but never made it. his family says amtrak told them that smith took a train to newark, new jersey where he checked into a hospital on the 17th and checked out on the 18th. no word why he went to the hospital. as of now, smith is still missing. we are just days away from the first votes in the republican presidential race and there has been yet another lead change in iowa. >> this morning mitt romney has taken the lead over ron paul and the new numbers show a

surprising surge from another g.o.p. candidate. fox 5's sherri ly is live in the newsroom with the latest on this race to the white house. >> reporter: it's not a huge surprise to see lott edging -- mitt romney edging ahead in the polls but a few weeks ago rick santorum's name was hardly mentioned now among the top contenders. new polls show him climbing into third. his visits to all 91 iowa counties now appears to be paying off. it comes at the expense, though of newt gingrich who has fallen into fourth despite being about even in national polls with mitt romney. leading up to the iowa caucuses romney appears to be making his move, now the front runner. earlier in the week ron paul appeared to be the man to beat but has now slipped to second and in the ever changing iowa landscape, it's still anyone's race to win. >> i think people know me pretty well because i ran four years ago, and they want to make sure that whoever we nominate can actually beat barack obama. >> considering that i'm 20 points ahead in some of the

states it would be fairly foolish for me not to stay in the race. it is a long way from here to picking a nominee. >> i've always said that people of iowa are going to give me the spark and that's what i believe is happening right now. >> michele bachmann's campaign has imploded. she is pulling dead last and she has lost her iowa chairman to ron paul's campaign. meanwhile paul's brief spotlight as the front runner has made him a target. yesterday "occupy" protesters showed up at paul's iowa headquarters. four protesters arrested. so things are certainly heating up on the campaign trail there with days to go, who knows if that lead in iowa will change again. tony. >> thank you very much. meanwhile, a lawsuit has been filed to get newt gingrich's name on the ballot for the commonwealth's march primary. attorney and tea party activist jonathan mosely filed the suit yesterday. virginia requires 10,000 signatures from registered voters for a candidate's name to be placed on the ballot. gingrich believes some false signatures were submitted on

his behalf. the attorney is taking issue with how virginia's republican party determined gingrich did not have enough valid signatures. mitt romney and ron paul are the only names currently eligible for the virginia primary ballot. rick perry is continuing his legal battle to get his name included. and the virginia republican party is putting a loyalty oath into play. before voters can cast their ballots in the primary, they can be asked to sign a piece of paper saying they will vote for the republican nominee in november. that's allowed under a voting reform bill passed in 1999. republican delegate bob marshall of manassas is challenging the measure. under state law virginia voters do not have to register in support of a specific party. d.c. will have to shell out big bucks. the order stems from the historic handgun ban case. a judge ruled the city to pay more than $1 million in attorneys' fees and expenses to dick heller. he sued the district in 2003 over the ban on handgun

ownership. that was ultimately overturned by the u.s. supreme court in 2008. heller says he was surprised by the amount. he had been asking for over $3 million. more delays at ground zero. >> an underground 911 museum will not open as planned. marian rafferty has details. >> reporter: new york mayor michael bloomberg delivering the bad news, an underground 9/11 museum will not open as planned in 2012. the national september 11th memorial and museum foundation has been fighting with the port authority of new york and new jersey. at issue, who is responsible for paying millions of dollars in costs related to the project. >> i'm sure we are going to work out something with the port authority. they have got a difficult budget situation. i'm sympathetic to that. >> reporter: despite the setback, tourists from around the world and all 50 states have made the memorial a regular stop on their visits to the big apple. >> 1 million people, 1 million visitors from all around the world have come to this site

and the idea that 1 million people have come here, have set foot on this ground, a place that they have not been able to stand in 10 years makes all the work that's gone into building this very special place worth it. >> the site draws about 10,000 visitors a day. at this rate the memorial is on track to match or exceed the amount of people who visit the statue of liberty and empire state building each year. all visitors to the 9/11 memorial must reserve free tickets in advance and pass through a security screening. in new york, marian rafferty, fox news. federal prosecutors reportedly preparing to file the first criminal charges against bp in connection to that massive gulf oil spill. the "wall street journal" reports prosecutors are considering whether bp engineers lied to federal regulators about the risks of drilling at the well. a conviction could mean five years in prison. a couple things to watch out for come this new year, a heads up for drivers on the dulles toll road. starting sunday rates go up by 25 cents at the main toll plaza

to $1.50. rates will, however, remain the same on offramps at 75 cents also shopping bags in maryland going to cost you. stores in montgomery county will charge a 5 cents tax on both paper and plastic bags. a security upgrade for several bridges in maryland. the $11 million project will focus on five state owned toll bridges including the bay bridge. slated improvements include cameras, sensors to spot stopped vehicles and new lighting. the baltimore sun reports the project is part of a homeland security plan developed by governor martin o'malley's administration. aaa out with its list of best and worst in transportation for 2011. making the best list, emergency legislation that ended arrests in the district for expired tags. also new safety laws in maryland, a drop in distracted drivers on the beltway, the opening of the icc and progress on construction projects. making the worst list, record high gas prices, the highest number of hit-and-run crashes

shepard smith takes a look back. back. >> reporter: 2011 began like any other year, hope for a better year ahead and of course resolutions. but just days into 2011, chaos and unspeakable violence erupted at a grocery store parking lot in arizona. gun fire interrupted a political event near tucson, a gunman shot congresswoman gabrielle giffords in the head, he wounded eight others, six killed. amazingly giffords survived the assassination attempt and made a return to washington a few months later. a wave of unrest across the middle east in northern africa, citizens toppled long time leaders in tunisia and egypt but it was the dangerous moammar gadhafi who put up the biggest fight. his 40 year rein of terror came to a gruesome end when fighters killed him in his hometown in october. the arab spring as it became known stretched into summer and fall with deadly protests persisting in syria and yemen.

march 11th a massive earthquake shook japan. the magnitude 8.9 quake unleashed a devastating tsunami and triggered a meltdown at this power plant. a stormy spring in the u.s., meteorologists said there were more than 750 tornados in april alone, hundreds of people were killed. but the hardest hit city was joplin, missouri, a powerful ef5 tornado left 157 people dead, making the joplin twitter the deadliest in decades. a new era of british royalty began when prince william and his blushing bride kate swapped vows. may 1st, a dramatic late night announcement from the commander in chief, a team led by navy seals swooped into this compound in pakistan where they said they found osama bin laden, the seals reportedly shot him in the face and defense officials say the world's most wanted man was

alcohol regulators in virginia say the tv show moon shiners is misleading viewers. viewers have been contacting them about the commonwealth allowing illegal booze manufacturers. the discovery channel series depict people who brew their own moon shine. they say no liquor is being produced and the department would not have participated in filming had they known how it would have been portrayed. a streak of bad luck for a homeowner in tennessee, doug received a call on christmas eve that a vehicle smashed through his house. a neighbor told police he was working on his van's brakes when the car drifted away. but this isn't the first time doug's home has been hit. two years ago construction truck ran into the house while doug was home from iraq for his son's birth. the family spent months in a hotel and doug says he expects

tony has got them over in studio b. >> we are happy to have them here, local guys made good, lead singer is jordon and pressing strings will be releasing that new album january seventh right? >> yes. the whiskey in annapolis, we are having a cd release party. >> excellent. and this is your third album? >> yes. >> the music business has gone through so many changes. is it tough putting out your own music now and getting it out to people? >> extremely tough. and nowadays you got to use different mediums to get it out there like for instance we -- with this album we funded it through kick starter.com. if you go to kick starter.com and search our name pressing strings you'll see it's community based funding, people donating who like the music and people recognize it's a tough business to be in, especially nowadays with all the changes that it's gone through, but stuff like that that helps us out a lot. >> for those who have not seen you yet, how do you
