quantityco. temperatures will be off and running shortly. 46 in annapolis and 30 in frederick. here is the forecast for today. lots of sunshine. just plain warmth afternoon, 5 your daytime high. back to you, tony. tick, thank you very much. this morning's big story is also making national headlines. d c council member harris thomas, jr. has resigned. >> he is due in federal court late they are morning to face charges of stealing government money and filing false tax returns. we get more now from sherri ly from outside the federal court. >> reporter: the resignation came under mounting pressure he was charged with two felonies yesterday and in just about two hours, he will plead guilty. in a statement announcing his

resignation, he apologized. ize the feds say he stole $350,000 in grant money. yesterday, he was charged in what's called a criminal information signaling a plea: >> the information has been filed in lieu of an indictment and that means that harry thomas has waived his right to a grand jury indictment and has agreed to plead guilty to the counts that are in the information. this means that the deal is done. >> i would like to pass a message to harry thomas, jr.'s, his wife, his mom. >> thomas will likely face prison time and has reportedly told friends he expects to be sentenced to two three years. in the meantime, a special election will be held to fill

his council seat. that hearing is scheduled for 11:15 this morning. and the u.s. attorney will be holding a press conference at 2:00 to discuss this case. joining us now is matt auckland. what can we expect in court? >> reporter: that is when the plea agreement comes, as you were saying, last night. we heard that he will plead guilty to these two charges, one of them involving the money that apparently was taken from the district of columbia, $350,000 use for youth. the other has to do with false tax returns. the money that harry thomas made over the years, inchewedding some of the money that he's accused of taking was

not reported. that's a felony charge. >> reporter: and technically, he could stay in office until his conviction which would be confirmed at his sentencing. but he did finally quit under mounting pressure. what has been the reaction from the mayor, from the council? >> the reaction has change add pit. as you know, for quite a while, it was david cattania who first called for thomas to resigned. that came almost immediately after the settlement. thomas agreed to pay that $300,000 and a few other council members. yesterday, the mayor finally came forward and said that he believes that thomas should step down. kwame brown last night also announced that he expected thomas to resign and then got a letter. i also have been hearing that council member brown has not received an official letter from council member thomas which would signify his resignation from his council seat. >> real quick, that special

guilty of first degree murder in november. she is expected to get 35 years in prison. a five-year-old child left alone on a school bus in fred prick. the frederick post reports that the driver failed to check his pus after making the last drop on tuesday. the five-year-old fell asleep during the trip from her daycare center. when she woke up, she was not at the school. the bus was parked outside of the driver's home. the drive eventually took her to school. loundoun county officials are investigating the case of six middle stage students who were apparently drunk before the start of the school day. a student saw one of their classmates dripping on the bus and reported it to administrator. one of the students who had opinion drinking went to the school nurse. eventually, all the students

came forward. officials are not taking disciplinary action right away. >> a lot of people say zero tolerance and there is no zero tolerance. if you do a, we are not going to automatically do b. thinks the sheriff department's jurisdiction. is there a help? we have treatment? do you need counseling? >> we don't throw students away. this is a one-time mistake. if this is a one-time mistake, we want to correct it. the student were in various stages of intoxication but none of them needed serious medical attention. while the gop candidates gear up for back-to-back debates in new hampshire weekend, a vote counting controversy has erupted in the state they just left. the iowa gop is scrambling. fox's peter doocey has more on what this all means and what

this means on the campaign trail. >> reporter: it takes two weeks for the republican party to certify all the votes but some are reporting that the count might not have been right and that's something that rick santorum wants you to know about. >> they're going to shall reporting them -- they're going to be reporting them, they're going to be certifying them. there was a county where there was a 21-vote mistake in my favor and another county where there was a 20-vote reporting mistake in romney's favor. >> santorum says. >> there will be changes >> reporter: even though iowa is still on our minds, new hampshire is on our calendars for this tuesday and that's where jon huntsman has beat out mitt romney for the endorsement of the boston globe. the newspaper says his credentials match those of any- up in the field and he is the best prepared to be president. >> there is something happening

in this state, i'm telling you right now but you have a chance to make it happen. you have a chance to change the course of this nation's future. >> huntsman is currently fourth in new hampshire. his 7% support is trunked by romney's 41% in the latest suffolk 7 news tracking poll. this as romney has been splitting time between new hampshire and south carolina and focusing his fire on the president instead of the gop rival. >> this president believes in something that some call crony capitalism. romney will split his time between aisle where he trails former house speaker newt gingrich and new hampshire where he is the prohibitive favorite. the new jobs numbers from december are just in and a burst of hiring has pushed the unemployment rate down. the jobless rate fell from 8.6 to 8.5% this morning now at the lowest level in almost three years and giving a boost to the economy at the end of 2012.

employers added 2,200,000 jobs last months. the unemployment rate has now dropped for four straight months. pope benedict xvi is naming 22 new cardinal it is, including an archbishop from maryland. edwin f. o'brien who was paul more's archbishop was named to the college of card nawstles today. owe brian is 72 years old and will serve as an advisor to the pope. he will be eligible to vote in papal elections until he is 80 years old. the vatican will hold a new meeting with the pope next months when the pope will elevate o'brien and others to this new level. coming up, how to address your kids' needs and how to still have time for your significant other. >> that ace very good one, very important. and a dog believed to be killed in an avalanche is reiew neated with his family. we have a lot of these good

concerned, but joining us now this morning to talk about an obstacle that a whole lots of us encounters ace carrie majorca for an organize called the paraphernalia encouragement program. thank you for coming in today. >> talk about it a little bit. it's an incredible resource that we are lucky and unique to have in this area because it's not common around the country to have a center like this. it's been around for 30 years . it's nonprofit and the mission is to develop stronger, encouraging families and they do that through a series of classes and they have a noted series author talk and they give community talk at schools and local programs. they have a variety of ways to support the community. >> often, it is said, when you leave the hospital, nobody gives you a manual that gives you what to do after this little baby is walking and talking about. >> first dealing with the kids and the different stages and also keeping her marriage fresh

and exciting. you know, as exciting as marriage is as a certain point. let's talk first about the kids. how do they focus on each phase? three months is such a baby. >> she did bring in her husband in the heart of the question. one of the first things that we always have parents do when we come to the program is talk about how to come on one page. that's going to be owe effective for them. to the extend that they can read a book, have a plan for how they're going to move forward, that's going to give the kids a very consistent mess am. >> this viewer is doing everything right, so far. she just needs to know how to find a time, probably. >> that's a big part of it, too. another thing that they can do, once they are on one page is that they can become a real support for each other. they can even have kind of like code signals to say, i'm out of patience here.

i need you to step in because they're going to be on one page so that's going to be really helpful, too. in terps different developmental stages that her children at at at this point, she talks here about having one child in extreme independence. there is another term for that and we call this power struggle, very common issue for young kids and even colder kids, quite frankly teens. we talk about that one of the best ways -- there are so many tools. but one of the best tools that i can off here quickly is that she can get the three mondesi old all the way to the four- year-old involved in family task, family work. keeping them busy with stuff around the house is a lot better than having them struggle with their parent. her three mopped old is going to have to learn how to have a good 10 to 30 minutes of time doesn't tampa bay themselves whereas the one-year-old can help put away groceries and toys. the two-year-old can tart to

help to set table, learn how to bring the plates back. you have the four-year-old hemming you sort the laundry, making the bed when you have kids involved, they are so eager at this age to do that. they feel confident. they are cooperative. i think that's going to go a long way: how about the marriage? >> yeah, that's a good tierchlts i don't know how these parents have any time in the day to look at each other. they want to maintain a healthy relationship. any quick tip? >> find a way to get in a date night once a week. if they have friends, family, babysitters that can help them get out, that would be wonderful. in the event they can't do that, one advantage of having young kids is they go to bed early. you can have carpet picnic, have some time make sure they are taking that time to nurse the friendship, that relationship so they can fill their tanks and start back the

jrntlez welcome back. nasa is questioning the right of the commander of apollo xiii to sell his checklist. it includes handwritten calculations by the commander that were crucial in guiding apollo xiii back to earth after it had problems. commander james lavelle put it up for auction and got $388,000 for it. nasa has stopped the sale. robert lavelle may not have the right to sell it. nasa says only the space agency itself can authorize the sales of these types of artifacts. >> i'm not spliced. >> i'm not but it's fascinating because if he has had this in his possession all these years and decides i'm going to sell it. >> perhaps they thought he shredded it. i feel like it is government property. >> it is government property. >> i'm just asking. >> like when a satellite -- yeah, what a satellite falls apart and falls to earth, you
