passengers on an air canada flight experienced a four-hour delay yesterday, all thanks to a pet cat. the animal ran into the cockpit after escaping from his carrier during boarding. the airline staff chased after him, eventually finding the scared pet hiding in an inaccessible area of wiring. >> some people tried to catch him up front in first class, and then he took off into the cockpit and nestled down. >> he went underneath the captain's feet. >> you know she got some looks from the other passengers as they were getting off. passengers had to get off the plane while technicians took pieces apart to retrieve the cat. he is now safely back with his owner. >> you know she did. >> yeah. well, it's an uncomfortable subject to say the very least, but it impacts somewhere between 6 and 12 million american children each and every year. we're talking about head lice.

unconscious in a prince george's jail cell. he's charged with not calling an ambulance and lying. no word yet on a court date in maryland. the man who shot at the pentagon, u.s. marine corps museum and other military installation pleads guilty and now prosecutors have released this video showing one of the actual shootings. they say that 23-year-old jonathan maluku used a home video camera to record one of his assaults. as part of his plea deal, he will get 25 years in prison. we're finding out the details of the pentagon budget cuts, the military is chopping half a trillion dollars over the next decade. that means 100,000 troops will be lost, mostly in the army. the pentagon chief leon panetta admits there are risks but says the u.s. can still respond to any threat. and when we say loss, we mean the numbers will be reduced. 8:31 now. >> tucker barnes back with us. >> it's been a busy morning.
8:32 am
i'm excited about it until it arrives and then i can't keep up with it. we've got lots of thunderstorms. it's crazy, we talk about thunderstorms. >> whoa! did you hear that? that's crazy. i don't know if our viewers can hear it, but just as you said that, a huge rumble of thunder right here. >> amazing. >> you've got some kind of power. >> is tim tebow coming in this morning? >> i don't know. let's just get ready just in case. >> tim tebow. hey, there's a live shot. >> get ready. >> we've got showers and obviously thunderstorms -- >> 61 degrees, huh? >> i was going to mention the temperature, we've jumped six degrees in the past 45 minutes. >> oh, my goodness! this is crazy. >> the weather will be a little crazy here for the next few hours and, again, we've got the potential for more thunderstorms and along with that just a deluge of rain, very heavy rain, likely to see ponding on the roadways and winds gusting to maybe 50 miles an hour, already reports of that, particularly south and west of the city down towards culpepper. let's go to the radar and let me give you a live look here
8:33 am
and that thunder we just heard off to the north and west is likely that particular cell there just off to our north and west, and you can see here, we're starting to get some indications of flashing, that's thunder and lightning embed inside our storms. you see to the west of franconia and alexandria we're getting some shower and thunderstorm activity. this is going to come through the district in the next 45 minutes. be prepared for severe weather with winds gusting to 40, maybe 50 miles per hour and locally very heavy rainfall just for a short period of time here as this all pushes east. eventually we are going to quiet down. let's open up the hd radar just a little bit and show you what's going on off to our south and to our west, as we open that up, open that up, karen. all right, you're not going to do it for me. there you go, off to the south and west, most of the rain shower activity. here we go with the cooler and dryer air working in from the northwest a little later this morning. we'll see some sunshine this afternoon, so it will quiet down. once we get through these thunderstorms to the east of us, we will quiet down, but it's going to get windy around
8:34 am
here with winds gusting to 35 to 40 miles per hour today. fredricksburg 68 degrees, 61 in washington. hagerstown, you've jumped about 12 degrees in the past hour, 49 for you. warm front try to go bounce through the area, but a lot of cool and dry air off to the north and west. the battleground is right across the washington area as we speak. once we get it east of us, things will quiet down later today. again, blustery and cold tonight with temperatures falling into the 20s and lower 30s. there's your weekend forecast. going to be nice and quiet around here with temperatures, highs back where they should be about 42 by sunday and monday. that's the weather forecast. allison, tony, i'll give you guys updates as necessary. back to you. >> thank you very much. according to the centers for disease control and prevention, an estimated six to 12 million lice infestations happen each year in the united states among children 3 to 11 years old. now, since treating lice is not an easy task, one local mom has opened her own facility to battle this bug. and lauren saltzberg who calls
8:35 am
herself the potomac lice lady joins us to talk about lice, prevention and treatment. i am so happy to talk to you and to know that you are taking this on. good morning to you. >> good morning, allison. how are you? >> i'm doing well, thank you. we said it right there, you're a local mom, so let me just ask you, how did you decide to get into the lice business? >> well, i've always been the go-to mom. everyone has come to me to do their knit picking, and so i decided it's a gruesome job and somebody's gotta do it. >> just until this very moment i didn't realize that's probably where that phrase even came from, knit picking. nit you're talking about -- is it the egg or the actual little bug, what is a nit? >> that's a great question. actually, the nit is the actual egg and it is something that is so very hard to pick out. it is often confused with dandruf and that is why it often goes undetected and parents who have never seen
8:36 am
lice before have a very, very hard time detecting it. the nit is the egg, it is not the bug. >> lauren, i'm sitting here scratching because this is something that just gets under our skin and makes us very uncomfortable to even talk about. but, again, you are addressing this head on. let me ask you about -- before we talk about how to do this at home, let me ask you about your business because a lot of people just don't know how to do this. you're located now in potomac, but you're still busy, you're opening up another facility, is that right? >> well, i actually started off as a mobile facility. i was going from home to home treating and nit picking, as you say, but i became so busy that i decided to fill the niche that was so badly needed that i did open up this salon that i'm standing in right now. so families who are not comfortable treating it themselves come to me, and i spend that tedious task here in my facility, combing out their hair and treating it with the products that i've made myself. >> let's talk about those. you treat this with all-natural
8:37 am
products, you do not treat this with pesticides because a lot of the products on the market now, you can't even really pronounce half of the ingredients with them. that's correct. i found just with my experience that a lot of the over-the- counter products don't seem to work, the lice has become immune and resistent just like we've become immune and resistant to a lot of antibiotics. so i've created my own products that i've developed with some arom therapies in california. they're all natural, safe to use, and i found out that the lice don't like these products and the lice -- it makes it easier for the lice to just come out of the hair and it makes it easier to comb out and i use a very good nit comb. and, honestly, according to the national iculous association, there's nothing better and more effective to use than a good lice comb.
8:38 am
>> that fine-toothed comb. if we're at home, here's the information for everybody. how do we treat and prevent our kids from getting lice? >> honestly, if you're at home and you suspect that your children have lice, the best thing for you to do is to treat sooner rather than later. you want to use a good comb, you know, like this comb and you want to comb, comb, comb, comb their hair, and i would recommend not using the over- the-counter products, but if you feel that is what you choose to do, then use the over- the-counter products, follow the directions correctly, but more importantly, buy a good lice comb and comb them. and if you're in doubt, you can see a professional like myself. but you just have to screen your kids, check them regularly and just comb, comb, comb because the most important thing is to get out all the nits and the eggs because if you don't get them out, they're going to keep coming back and the cycle will continue and continue. >> and they're sticky, it's really a mess.
8:39 am
all parents hate getting those letters coming home with the kids that there's been a case of lice in your school. we're going to link all this information to our website because, man, there's more to talk about, like how do you prevent it, don't share the hats, sleepovers, all these questions, so i'm going to have the viewers go to your website through our website, myfoxdc.com. lauren saltzberg is the founder of the potomac lice lady. >> yes. >> i'm glad you're around, lauren, let me just say this. i predict you will hire more people soon, but that's just my prediction. >> oh, absolutely. thank you. >> potomac lice lady, llc. >> you stole my line. it's great that she's doing that, and she's going to end up franchising. >> she must end up doing that. i read in her information that she's the daughter of a doctor and i'm sure that that helps, she's not squeamish about any of that stuff we don't want to do. it is 8:39. >> i'm still itchy. >> a rumble of thunder going on

the world's premier monster truck series is in town tonight until sunday. >> fox 5's annie yu getting a -- preview of the big event and joins us live from the verizon center. i love how it's transformed to this event, annie. reporter: it's really impressive to see all the dirt here on the arena floor, it's exref. the show is celebrating its 30th anniversary of the grave digger legend. that's a big deal. joining me now is the driver, rod schmidt. good morning, rod. >> thank you very much. reporter: rod, you've been driving this bad boy for 10 years. >> i've been with team graveyard for 15 years. it's been a great, great adventure. everyday is new for us, we tribute to the fans, this is the year for the fans where we're driving the truck for the fans this year. it's actually a big deal. 30 years is quite the milestone. reporter: talk a little bit
8:48 am
about the history of the car, like how did it all start? >> it started 30 years ago, dennis anderson had a dream and he named the truck grave digger, just a bunch of junkyard parts, you know, i'm going to bury you with this truck and the name just evolved from a joke, so it's been a good -- reporter: what an honor, you've been driving for 10 years and now it's the 30th anniversary. what does this all mean for you? personally. >> it's a milestone, for the 20th anniversary, it was great, 30 is going to be even better. the world finals is coming up, the double-down package, 30 years, it's phenomenal. reporter: and you've traveled all around the world and performed in front of dr osh competed in front of 4 million fans a year, i mean, how do you build up that adrenaline rush before a big show? do you have any ritual that you do? >> no. just going out looking at the faps, watching the fans. fortunately we get to go late ner the freestyle and stuff like that, so we get to watch what the other trucks are
8:49 am
doing, we have to top that. that's our forte. we have to drive crazy. reporter: you have to talk like this. i'm going to jump in this bad boy, right, or attempt to? >> right. reporter: because we're going to show you how easy to get up in here. what's the technique? >> put your left foot there, put your right foot here and keep climbing. i think she's going to take my job. reporter: i don't know about all that. whoa! okay. wow. so the good news is there is a seat belt in here, that's always good, safety first. so what do we have when we get in here? what are these for? this is a little scary here. >> we have an on-board fire extinguisher. this one is for, like, if the driver were to get out and we have another one on the inside that's in cab if something were to happen. i could pull a switch and it would extinguish flames inside the cab. that's very rare. the seats are form fitted to the driver. reporter: because i can't even reach the pedals. >> that seat is a lot bigger than it would be for you, but
8:50 am
for somebody that's bigger than me like my crew guy, he has a tough time getting in there. reporter: is that why the steering wheel is hanging up. >> we take the steering wheel on and off to get into the truck. reporter: how fast will this go? >> las vegas we have an open stretch, about 70 miles an hour. reporter: and what is it really like when you're driving through? i mean, i can't even see over the dashboard. you obviously can, but what is it like for you when you're behind the wheel here? >> it's pure adrenaline, we have 60-second freestyle here so it will be 60 seconds of pure adrenaline, when we get out of the truck, the crowd just drives it. reporter: a lot of people on their feet and screaming. >> absolutely. you reporter: you can come out and be a part of the crowd here at the verizon center. the first show is tonight at 7:30. log onto our website, myfoxdc.com, we have a link to the verizon center here so you can get your tickets. back to you in the studio. >> thanks so much, annie. actress elizabeth banks
8:51 am
gained big screen recognition for her roles in "sea biscuit" and "spiderman." and on tv "scrubs" and "30 rock." >> she told kevin mccarthy when she's playing in a serious role like "man on a ledge," she likes to sneak in humor where she can. reporter: i think you are one of these great actresses where you have a great balance where you can be funny and very serious. you get both of those in this movie. you have that good balance. is that freeing as an actress? and which element is harder for you to be funny or to be serious? >> i'm addicted to making people laugh, very addictive. very fun. this was written as a pretty dramatic role and i'm just always looking for ways to inject a little humor into situations, i know audiences really appreciate it. for me it keeps it interesting everyday and it's hard to spend 50 days playing somebody with their heart wrapped in darkness, so i really enjoy sort of trying to find light
8:52 am
moments in everything. you know, i play an nypd negotiator in this movie and i spoke with a lot of negotiators before i started. they all kind of keep it light. they have to. they take it very personally, it's a very serious job, it's life or death, but because the stakes are so high, it almost requires that they joke around with each other. reporter: your character has this perception, everybody has this perception about her that she did lose that one person, they only focus on that one negative aspect of her career as opposed to looking at the good things. as an actress, when you first came to hollywood did you feel like people perceived you in some way, did you have to, like, prove you had the skills to do this? >> i do feel the similarity frankly is you're always judged by the very last thing you did. , so it's really hard especially nowadays to bring up history. it's like what just happened. reporter: let's say you are shooting a scene when you are in an emotional element. when that camera shuts off, are you able to turn back into yourself or do you have down time? >> it totally depends on the role.
8:53 am
every role is different. this character i was very -- i had a lot of fun with and ed burns plays my partner in this film and he is essentially a new york cop, his entire family is a new york cop. so he's so authentic and we did a lot of hanging out, and, you know, he's, like, yeah, i go to stakeouts, we hang out. we drink coffee, hang out in our uniforms, had our guns in our belts. it was about like we were cops, you know. >> and you can watch kevin's review of "man on a ledge" and the other movies in theaters this weekend coming up at 9:00. the actor best known as epstein on "welcome back kotter" has died. robert hedges played a jewish puerto rican student in the 1970s hit show. it was about a teacher that returns to an inner city school in new york. does anybody not know "welcome back kotter." hedges died at a hospital in new jersey thursday after undergoing cardiac arrest.
8:54 am
in addition to playing that sweat hog which is what the characters were, including john travolta, maybe you know that. he also starred in shows like "cagney and lacey" and "the drew carey show." hedges was 60 years old. that's sad. >> very sad. the king of pop is immortalized in a traditional hollywood way. michael jackson's family including his three children joined at the theater, the kids took turns using their dad's sequined gloves to leave impressions in the cement outside the theater. two of jackson's brothers along with his mother and smokey robinson and justin beiber. we want to say good morning to our facebook fan of the day, kira. look at this photos, it's a photo of kira's great grandmother who turned 100 years old yesterday. congratulations on that milestone birthday. if you would like to be monday's fan of the day, do that by searching fox5 morning

why they believe it could be connect today a missing pe case. and workplace bullying. we talk a lot about bullying on the playground, but this also happens in the workplace. unfortunately a lot of people experiencing it now. so what's the best way to handle it? i'll talk with an expert in today's "ask allison" segment, really important segment, i believe. first we want to turn to tucker barnes who's in the weather center. tucker, i'm looking at the radar right up here. this is a significant weather that is coming through. tell us about it. >> you got it right, tony. a deluge occurring right through the district as we speak. heavy rain, even some thunderstorm activity which continues here. good news it should generally be out of here shortly, but certainly going to be on ponding on the roadway as the rain is very heavy. there's max hd radar. notice the reds and yellows, that indicates rainfall approaching an impleg an hour in some spots. these storms are racing off to the east and northeast about 50 miles per hour.
