7:30 am

upper 40s. a few showers wednesday and thursday. >> weather, on time traffic and there she is julie wright has the latest i am about to tweet. >> my goodness breaking news tucker is going to tweet. i am going to tweet. >> that is breaking news folks. here is what i know downtown police activity closes off a portion of taylor street, northeast washington between 12th and michigan. taylor shut down until further notice now the crew in sky fox, over the scene of a house fire so if you are travelling northbound, route 3, north of 424, davidsonville road that is where we have the activity see the fire truck still on the scene the left side of the road able to get by northbound 3, limited to one lane a lot of fire and rescue units on the scene of this house fire traffic is starting to stack up. northbound 3 stay to the left as you work your way north of 424. back inside we will update the ride inbound canal road our bus remains in place still waiting for a crane to come and remove
7:33 am
this vehicle big delays, inbound, canal road and head out towards the whitehorse freeway. as you work your way past lockers drive. in just under 24 hours, voters in florida head to the polls to decide which republican they want to see in the white house this morning it appears mitt romney has the edge after a new poll shows him with a double digit lead overnight gingrich. joining us with the latest, staff writer with roll call good morning thanks for being here. >> good morning. >> we alluded to it there what is the headline heading into florida tomorrow. >> mitt romney by most polls is double digits ahead of newt gingrich most people expect him to take the primary tomorrow already a half million, absentee ballots have been put in. it is a good indicator where this primary is going a lot of
7:34 am
people are looking beyond florida the question is can newt gingrich stay in the game what happened with rick santorum it is possible if santorum, drops out, and endorses gingrich it will allow him a surge to catch up with romney. it really seemed newt gingrich was gaining a lot of pop lairly at least when we saw it in south carolina what happened in what seemed like days between this primary and caucuses these different contests what happens that the front runner then become it is one behind the front runner all of a sudden. >> it is a very interesting primary season for that reason. i think you should remember each state is very very different voters this south carolina i think because gingrich is from georgia, they have a lot of affinity or kind of affiliation with him, in a way florida voters don't, it is a very different state, huge
7:35 am
hispanic population different beast if you will. >> so interesting let's talk about the latino voting block there. florida is an interesting state though like it would be a different story in miami versus you know, jacksonville, it is sort of an interesting big old state, what do these candidates need to do, to let the hispanic population feel comfortable even within the hispanic population not everyone agrees within that voting block. >> florida has a huge cuban population, which tends to lean a little bit more right of the larger hispanic population they have very different views on immigration than voters in nevada going to the polls pretty soon so i think what both romney and gingrich have tried to do is align themselves with cuban american leaders in florida, try to get some of the members of congress
7:36 am
representing that delegation to get them to support them romney has been really good about that. they both have spanish language ads out they are trying to reach out and say hey, i rep rest. your views ultimately re-- represent your views, ultimately regardless who you are, you are worried about jobs, foreclosures and they are looking for the candidate to solve those issues. on immigration, we have heard mitt romney say his father was born in mexico does that come across as disingenious he was there as a missionary in a missionary camp. i think it is clever of romney the mexican connection, i think it was out in the news a few weeks ago romney was ignoring it not really discussing it, it is smart of him when he is in florida to pull on those roots and say hey, i have this connection as well. you know i don't think it hurts him like i said the polls are showing he is doing really well
7:37 am
aligned himself with the right people even had senator rubio, who is very popular, both with the cuban population and tea parties in florida, show some sort of support for romney i think he is in a good position. >> we will see, just basically, 24 hours away now. staff writer with roll call thanks for being here. >> thank you. >> tony over to you. it is a day of service here at fox 5 on this mentoring monday, give us a call right now to learn more about how you can make a difference in the life of a young person in your community joining us life this morning, prince georges county executive, baker, to tell us about a mentoring initiative in prince georges county, that is represented here good morning. >> yes, we have two groups here, concerned black men, but also, the court appointed special advocacy here today getting calls we want all the men especially to call in. it also kicks off for us,
7:38 am
mentoring month, we start off be a king to a kid that is part of the mentoring we want to see done in prince georges county and throughout maryland. >> this is in need all across our area, in prince georges county you feel it is a particular need as well correct? >> we do we look at the number of kids leaving our schools early not graduating look at the number of kids who need help and that is why we started that initiative, be a king to a kid, mentoring that martin luther king did to so many people that went on to greatness we want churches, businesses, delegates, politicians, everybody to get involved especially the men we need more men to call into these phones today. >> tell us about cbm cares in prince georges county. >> they are working with some of our kids in our high schools it is a group we think is expanding and we thing they will do a great job and they are really doing a fine job mentoring our young people we need more of that done. >> you mention the folks who have been here before court
7:39 am
appointed special advocate of prince georges county tell us about that. >> they are the special advocacy the courts appoint to help out our young people when i was in annapolis they did a great job they need help and funding you know we want people to call in and help out the same way these groups are. >> one of the things we stress every time we do mentoring monday is, you know, there are different programs, different requirements but the one thing that they all are similar in, is that you know you don't have to have any particular, special skills, some times the commitment can be maybe as little as four hours a month of course it can be more than that depending on the organization and person it is a relatively easy thing to do. >> it is. i did something earlier this year where i had be the county executive for a day and just shadow me around i had a young person who was 13 spend the day with me. those are things you can do as a mentor it doesn't take a lot of money, doesn't take anything but just the time that you invest in a young person's life
7:40 am
will make all the difference. >> this is what we are doing all this morning, of course, we want you to call in (202)895- 3307 you will be connected with any of these folks here including the folks at concerned black men cares and prince georges county and here, court appointed special advocate. thanks for joining us. >> thank you for having me. >> alison back to you. 7:40 a.m. on a monday morning still ahead a new clue in the certificate p for a miss -- clue for a missing toddler in maine. they didn't make it to the big game but some of the nfls best player dot one last shot on the field a recap of last night's pro bowl coming up next brad and jill in accounting? crazy! coffee and chocolate. mocha. ooh! who's mocha? for the perfect blend of coffee and chocolate, try a mocha coffee or latte today.
