let me zoom in a little bit we have a lot of heavy rainfall, all being effected by that but the good news, this is actually moving its way out, we are going to see improvement into the course of the afternoon and we will be with some sunshine let's go to the weather maps, show you right now, 51 degrees national airport, 49 baltimore, 50 dulles, to the south, 52 frederiksburg where they are seeing the majority of that rainfall into the course of the day we will see sunshine at least the showers light except the areas we just showed you where it is havier and moderate a high of 56 degrees, nowhere near the 70s we hit yesterday but it is a reality check still well above seasonal, sun and much cooler back to you. all right thank you. a federal wage freeze is this mornings big story lawmakers in the house vote to freeze the
9:01 am
wages of federal workers. >> they have not had a pay raise in two years, stacey cohan is live on capitol hill with more on the wage battle. >> good morning alison no wage increase in two years if things keep heading in this direction it will be another year before federal workers can consider getting a pay increase that is because in the house, republican leaders pushed through a plan that would indeed freeze their pay yet another year. included in that plan is a pay freeze for congress, they also would not get a raise their average, the rank and file would be $174,000 leadership would get slightly more than that. this is all part of a republican effort to find a way to fund payroll tax cuts that is the cut that was extended for two months back in december it amounts to the average pay cut for the average american. president obama wants this payroll tax cut extended, republicans say they must find
9:02 am
a way to pay for it they are urging for federal workers to contribute a greater amount to pensions president obama has gone on the record saying he would like the federal workers get a pay raise a modest one .5%, pay increase, now this bill heads over to the senate democratic controlled and may not have a lot of support it could be challenging for them to vote down a bill that involves something about freezing their own pay, certainly an election year and difficult economy go not want the be seen as giving themselves a raise while others are not getting one. well, it is the first thursday of february, and that means the president is speaking at the national prayer breakfast you are looking at live pictures, of with a is going on with the president at that breakfast an hour ago he and the first lady were joined by vice president joe biden and
9:03 am
other lawmakers at the hilton. we want to listen in for a second. >> opens our ideas our eyes to his ideas which are different from our own which have radical. now personally i would say the same about the unborn. >> that is not president obama he is one of the people there, that is another person of the cloth or clergy man speaking at this point but again it is the national prayer breakfast where the president and vice president are this morning. >> thank you alison breaking news this morning in the republican race for the white house it appears newt gingrich is set to play a trump card in the campaign as in donald trump. associated press says trump will endorse him in nevada today. the latest twist in the race comes as gingrich is challenging his loss in florida and as mitt romney is doing damage control about something
9:04 am
he said. there are a number of reports this morning donald trump will endorse newt gingrich for president, just one more bit of drama for this republican field. >> will it be newt, will it be mitt or will it be trump for president. the king of anticipated announcements is saying something today about the race for president, it could be an endorsement no one is sure. debt all your friends to turn out. signs may point to gingrich but he won't say. >> romney meantime is having troubles of his own he laughed off a glitter attack at a rally yesterday but an interview he did was harder to kiss miss. >> i am not -- kiss miss. >> i am not season coronerred is about the poor, -- dismissed. physical low republicans fear romney stepped in it, comments about the poor could be used against him by the
9:05 am
obama campaign in a general election it was a day that was supposed to be a victory lap for romney now newt gingrich is challenging those results saying florida shouldn't be allowed to have a winner take all delegation. the chairman of the republican party is bracing. >> there will be more than just one complaint filed i can promise you that. that is why there is a committee on contests, to hear allocation complaints. >> while ron paul for one won't be happy about the gingrich complaint he largely bypassed florida on the assumption it was a winner take all state. in washington, doug luzader, fox news. doug thank you the search is on for the man who walked into a dc school and inappropriately touched a student this happened at ketchum elementary, 15th street southeast, a dc public schools spokesperson said he entered without permission, none of the students was injured. dc police released a key

9:09 am
since the recession hit and at twice the rate of our good neighbors in the common wealth of virginia. o'malley also repeated his call for legislators to legalize gay marriage in maryland. coming up how one group is empowering women globally i will chat with the cofounder and president about some of her trip. first police dash cam catches a daring rescue, we will show it to you, and this sad scene overseas where dozens are feared dead, after a soccer game we are checking the mornings headlines next next how about a quick fact before we go to break it is african american history month of course before we go to break a quick fact on this day february 2nd, 1897, alfred l crawl received a patent for his invention of the ice cream scoop. i do love some ice cream thank you very much we will be right back

9:15 am
worldwide, she has traveled to world trouble spots including i cannot even say this burkina faso where she lived on $1 a day. she joins us now to talk about the message her group is trying to get across the lawmakers and others to give women the tools they need to basically make a difference and empower themselves story for that nice to see you in studio with us. and first i guess let's talk about what is going on in really what the cradle of civilization, it is very sad to see what is happening now in the horn of africa can you give us some idea what people are going through. what people are going through is one of the worst droughts in a dozen years we did see it coming, some relief groups were able to stage supplies but the need has been incredibly overwhelming, so without the drought most people
9:16 am
in area grow their own food on their own small farms it leads to starvation without rain. >> why are we paying more attention to this? >> it is interesting there is a lot of needs on the plate of our country and some times when these places are far away, it is hard to get our heads around, the level of suffering that is happening there. they will tell you that, after the famine in ethiopia, the u.s. invested a lot of money in helping farmers grow more food what is interesting about this crisis those people have faired pretty well in getting through these hard times, but it is the people in somalia, who did not have that help, are the ones who are star offing now. >> we saw a picture if you wouldn't mind putting that back up again, you know, it is always amazing how people prevail the human spirit comes shining through, and it is because in that picture we saw children smiling in the face of
9:17 am
these terrible times, in your travels what have you found the spirit of the people to be. >> oh, the spirit of people is just incredible, i mean despite the odds and what they face, they still have so much hope, and tenacity, and the women that i talked to, are incredibly brilliant they have to come up with amazing solutions just to keep their families alive and to keep their children fed, so, you know their courage and their stamina, just is incredible. >> tell us about the work we see you doing here. >> in this picture, i am grinding some kind of a wheat like grain, to make a porridge drink given to the king and very special guests so i had the opportunity after making that to drink it myself it wasn't bad really. >> it is sus at that innocence
9:18 am
and considered a treat. >> absolutely. >> we said in the beginning you yourself basically experienced what it was like to live on the wages that some of these women make a day, can you tell us about that experience and how that came to be and. >> well, i had traveled every year to a developing country or more than one and one time in nicaragua i had the idea i want to feel what this is like so i tried to live for a day on $1 what i found was that it is pretty impossible, to do. i bought a bottle of water because i had to have clean water that wiped out half of my dollar there. i did it again in guatemala and burkina fhaso it is difficult to sustain on that amount of money i was trying to sustain myself. these women, in these developing countries have to sustain an entire family, on
9:19 am
just that amount of money. >> unbelievable, besides raising awareness in the seconds that we have left what is your hope that these women will i guess, what will their reality be? i think my hope is that you know our country and our government, will participate overseas, and we are facing tough times at home, we actually only give a half of 1% of the u.s. budget right now to help poor people around the world. 99.5% we spend at home, half of 1% we spend abroad. if we get these resources into the hands of women they will turn it around and really lift their familycommunities out of poverty. >> thrive indeed. thrive indeed just interesting to note that basically, women thrive worldwide is entirely funded by private donations, no government no corporate sponsorship so i am sure that,. >> we are now getting
9:20 am
corporatesponsorship very happy about that. >> other than that no government sponsorship go to the website we will link it, find ways to help thank you very much for coming here with us tony over to you. >> thank you very much. >> if you are thinking about buying into facebook buyer beware the scam police are warning coming up next. when you thing of valentines day candy likely comes to mind but, kids at one school are being told they can't have it. is it fair? we will let you be the judge. >> first let's check with annie yu. hey, tony, crispy crickets in the morning you got to love that. that is what we are cooking up right now and coming up, we will show you other delicacies and believe me people eat this stuff kids love it it is just one of many many interactive things here at the maryland science museum when harry's big adventure kicks off this saturday don't want to go any where. >> first today's trivia

weeks of winter is that right? >> sure, he saw his shadow earlier we have six more weeks of winter but, we didn't want pennsylvania to have all the fun we have our very first annual groundhog day here in washington dc i am being joined by aaron the organizer of the event down here in washington aaron thanks so much for inviting us down today tell me about what transpired earlier. >> thanks tucker, dupont festival organized today's events we brought potomac phil out and started with a rabbi giving us a blessing and then we carried into the national anthem, and then that quickly lead to the groundhog committee, top hats came over and talked to potomac phil and listened to what he had to say and it was basically, that we found out 6 more weeks of winter. >> did you feel like it was pretty successful for a first go around how long did it take you to organize. >> this event started about a month or so, some people say

weekend there is a slight chance we could see a little precipitation sunday, we will watch that closely so far it is looking good monday back to 48 degrees mostly cloudy skies temperatures continue to be above seasonal we are getting a good break we should only be into about the low 40s or so. so we are really still staying on the mild side if we have six more weeks of winter hopefully you will stay mild and sunny back to you alison and tony. >> thank you one of the questions a lot of us are asking of late where is the snow this winter the question is more relevant considering we have had down right balmy temperatures. yesterday was 72 degrees we tackled the issue in our ask the weather guy segment, we are joined in studio to talk ability the secrets of snow. we are finding, we probably lost our snow this year because we have a la nina over the
9:37 am
pacific, no wet air coming in and the arctic oscillation is positive, that cold air is staying up north. in 2010 you had wet air from an el nino year. wagner says the snowfall for our region is low but not unusually low, compared to other recent years like 2006. >> he produced a number of hits with his brothers. >> nick jonas is appearing on broadway sharing a role with other big named celebrities he joins us live to talk about the show after the break stay with us it is 9:37 a.m.

9:41 am
about his new adventure good morning how are you? >> good morning. are you protecting the throat now? you feeling okay? >> yeah, i am feeling good you know it is important performing every night singing as much as i am to protect my voice that is why i have the scarf on but feeling good enjoying the show i am a week and a half into it now, getting more and more comfortable and you know, learning so much about the role each night i play in this show. >> and, you know, a play, you know a lot of people probably thing, it is a play it is going to be the same every night but it really isn't, right? >> no, i mean it is the same, show every night, same material but it is so different, you know, beautiful thing about live theatre, it is always going to be different keeps you on your toes. it has a lot of opportunities, the characters i play finch has a lot of opportunities to make
9:42 am
it your own. >> you step into the role, the guy from glee, karen chris was doing it most recently before that daniel rad cliff, harry potter does that put any pressure when you step into a role other actors have been in. >> definitely but it is good pressure the kind that pushes me to give the best performance i can every night. daniel radcliff was amazing in this role i saw him before i signed on and darren was fantastic as well it is an honor to be among so many great actors who have played the role in the revival and mathew broad rick in 1995 and before that robbie morris for the original was amazing so i would say that you know finch is one of those roles that you know, is a leading role for a young man, which is kind of a dream come true for me and broadway is where i started as a performer so it is fun to be back and now
9:43 am
be a leading man. is broadway your first love? is this what you really like to do? >> i love all elements of performing, all the different places i have been able to perform but there is a special place in my heart for broadway one of the only platforms in the world i feel you can dance, act and sing all at the same time in front of a crowd that loves the material of the show this show is such a classic and this score by frank lester is one i love singing and the choreography, by our director, rob ashford is amazing and definitely makes me break sweat but all in good fun and i am enjoying doing it every night. >> last question before i let you go you are doing this joe released a solo album, kevin is married now, are the jonas brothers done? >> no, we are talked about coming back together, writing again. it has been a year and a half
9:44 am
since we worked together and it will be an interesting process to get back, and then you know see what we can create. we want to take our time with this one and make it great >> nick jonas glad you joined us good luck in the play how to succeed in business without really trying on broadway now thanks nick see you soon. >> thank you very much. >> he is a natural for that. >> he is. >> coming up, just a little bit, it is a bug's world, well, at least at the science center in baltimore,. >> annie shows us, this new creepy crawly exhibit. is she going to eat bugs again? >> i bet she will. it is time for garden grow, derek thomas standing by to answer questions that you sent in we will be right back right now 9:44 a.m. . i'm in a tricky situation here. i'm bidding on a 1979 dukes of hazzard lunchbox,

9:51 am
>> these taste like famous amoscock cookies i now have my protein for the day. >> exactly. >> i encourage all of you to come out here, -- cookies have my protein for the day. >> exactly. kids 3 and under are free come out here and have a lot of fun and meet jamie the bug chef. thank you thanks jamie. punxsutawney phil is not the only one concerned with seasons and weather, a lot of viewers have questions about plant behaviour derek thomas with thomas landscapes is here with answers as he always is good morning. >> good morning alison. >> you run across a lot of bugs have you ever warranted to fry them up and eat them. >> -- wanted to fry them up and
9:52 am
eat them. >> no. >> don't make me laugh derek please >> my box woods are turning yellowish brown this winter are they dying? >> it is an interesting thing happening this winter because we are having a non-winter so there is a lot of insect infestation, this box wood here which is yellow, and you can see there are swollen points on the leaves that i have taken off, that is a worm that has gotten into the box wood. >> ew. >> if you have that you need to thing about doing a dormant oil for spring what most box woods go through in winter is more a yellowing of the leaves like this this is a green as the box wood leaf should be, and this is a yellowing when it is lacking in fertilizer. >> but not necessarily dying. >> that one is not dying that one is not infected you want to make sure you don't see the sign of insect infestation. as long as there is no insect
9:53 am
infestation, take pelleted lime, it is going to sweeten up the soil, apply it around the box woods now, and you will be good to go. >> wow okay. my gardenias didn't grow last year i want to prune them back. >> hardy gardenias have become very very popular. >> really. >> and you know it is a wonderful smell in the garden in late spring but the problem with gardenias is if your plant gets out of control because they can become 5 to 6-foot tall shrubs. >> what? >> yeah. >> if they get out of control you don't want to prune them now because if we can get a tight shop here, that little bud, come late may, is going to be your flower. if you cut that off now,. >> right there? >> yeah, if you cut that off now by pruning you have effectively gotten rid of the
9:54 am
springs blooms. >> okay. last question my husband says to plant lilies in spring but i believe i saw them at the garden center in fall what is the right answer. >> lilies are an interesting bulb, usually tulips, daffodil, crow curse are in fall and then -- crocuses are in fall and then you thing of other things like talias in spring, lilies are available in the fall and spring, lilies happen to be in the onion family and if you look at it the bulb has little you know, it has layers like onion would. what you want to make sure when you get the lilly bulbs you can get them in the fall to answer gail's question you can get them in the fall and the spring do not buy them if they show signs of growth because a lilly truly never goes dormant less amount of time that it has been harvested, and then you get it from the shop and put it in your garden the more success you are going to have.
