7:36 am
hurting economically. does it carry any weight? >> if he have just a successful businessman, it probably would but he does have that element of carnival barker. the whole thing in las vegas had the vague feel of a side show right. >> and what's with the flip flop? was he ever going to really come out on newt's team or was this just -- what was that? was that just fleeter. >> if you look at donald trump, one thing that he does really well is hijack news cycles and he managed to hijack the entire news cycle part of it because of the head thing, newt, rom me. he kept everybody writing about that. >> would you agree with that assessment? >> i would aye with that. i think the donald likes to see himself in headlines. >> and we keep putting him up there. >> let's get your take as strategies, both of you about the political rhetoric. it's gotten nasty. it seemed to have toned down maybe a little bit now but that's just my per accepting.
7:37 am
i'll ask you, christie, is this helpful or hurtful as far as the viewers go? >> it's ultimately hurtful. there is precedent for a protracted contest like we are seeing between gingrich and romney to be helpful, you know, in terp terms of the conversation side. obama is not getting his message out as much. it could be hurtful like we had with obama and hillary clinton in 2008 but the fact that it's is so negative, that might end hurting the party negative ads are fine but the thing that makes this sort of corrosive is that it's not about issues but not about legitimate disagreements about issues but about personalities, about some, you know, fairly archaic records, about fragments.
7:38 am
that's where it's corrosive. >> voters see through that? >> yes, they do. >> as a republican strategies, mike, say newt gingrich is your client, what does he need to do to stay in this race? polls have mitt romney 20 points ahead in this state. >> the important thing out of florida is that romney didn't crest 50% which tells me that he still has not sealed the deal. if you are newt gingrich, get back and start preaching the old-time rehim onand draw that distinction with governor romney and it is there and still a vacuum. >> do you think that gingrich still do well in the southern states. >> i think he will. i think he'll do pretty well, yes. >> christie, here is your hard question. you kind of alluded to it. president obama, what does he need to do now? this is his race to lose in your opinion as a strategies?
7:39 am
is mitt romney ace real contender to the white house? >> the white house had a real reason to be concerned coming into this election because it's going to focus on the economy. there are still a great number of people who do not believe that the economy is doing well or getting better. one thing to look out, of course, is the unemployment number. the un'em prompt rate was about 8.5% which is about what it is right now. it's going to hinge whether people feel things that are getting better or not. good thing for thernlings of course, is that the conversation that we are having about the economy is one of income inequality and that's where it tends to make mitt romney look very bad and seen as the 1%, you know, and make president obama look as though he is on the side of the middle class. >> let me ask you then mike, was it a misspeak, was it taken out of context as mitt romney says it was when he said he didn't -- and i'm paraphrasing he is not concerned with the very poor. >> you know, let's say that he is right and it was tank out of context, right, but the underlying problem is that it shows that in a lot of ways,
7:40 am
governor romney is sort of a traditional establishment candidates. the answer to the problem of poor people is throw more money at them, right? and the answer among conservative republicans has been for 30 years, we want to get poor people jobs, homes, property, we want to make them wind up being middle class citizens who vote republican. when he was asked about that, the fact that he said, you know, i don't care about that tells you a lot about the divide between the establishment and sort of the conservative gop. >> he went on to explain there are safety nets for them but hearing, that i thought, uh-oh, you know, is the very right going to take issue with that and the thing that you hit on that, too. they don't want the safety nets necessarily john stuart referenced it. fur in a net of any kind, you are in trouble. you know, nobody wants people in nets you want them to be prosperous.
7:41 am
>> chris jones, i'll give you the last word on how damaging was what mitt romney says he said or didn't mean to say he said, what have you. >> i hit it was very damaging because that continued to portray him as someone who isey lettist, does not care about the 46 million people, record high number of people who are it actually living in for. that will continue to damage him throughout the race. >> this is christie -- why am i doing that? thinks christie setzer, with new heights communication manager. and mike mckenna and he is president of mwr strategies. thank you, mike. see you next time. >> thank you very much 7:41 now. roll out the yoga mat. next, how one airport is henning its travelers relax. and a young girl in maine ace finally enjoying some time at home after having six of her organs replaced. we'll tell you about that. first, a look at today's
