9:01 am
thank you very much new this morning metro is expected to admit liability in that deadly red line crash back in 2009. washington examiner is reporting metro and three exempt companies, settled 7 of the 9 death cases, and many injury cases they filed court documents this week saying they would stipulate to liability, to avoid significant riskcosts. now to our big story the payroll tax cut, lawmakers on capital hill are close to an agreement on extending it. >> if they do not renew the payroll tax cut anyone getting a pay check will see their taxes go up and soon too. stacey cohappen live on capital hill with the -- cohan live on capital hill with the latest. >> we are talking about that piece of money that comes out of everyone's pay check that goes to social security tax,
9:02 am
that is a tax we pay and we have been enjoying a cut in that tax actually 160 million americans have been enjoying that payroll tax cut. it amounts to $20 a week for the average worker and now appears congress has reached an agreement that will allow that little tax cut to extend through the end of the year now jobless benefits under this new agreement would also extend through the end of the year and doctors would be saved from a big cut in medicare payments this is obviously an ongoing debate for many many months republicans arguing how this is going to be paid for that apparently remains unresolved in the end the president wanted this done the republicans were not interested in being blamed for tax increases. the conference appears to be going nowhere and the difficulty we have had going back to december is getting our friends on the other side to cut any spending any where. >> it is pretty clear at least to me, that the payroll tax is
9:03 am
going to pass the question is whether it will have unemployment connected with it in some fashion, sgr some extenders were concerned about. it appears there is still concern about the fact there that is been no effort in the budget to find out how that will pay for this democrats you will remember have been pushing for a tax increase on the wealthiest americans appears that is on hold for now but at the moment we are expecting this payroll tax cut to be extended through the end of the year. back to you. >> all right thank you very much. this morning there is another black eye on the image of the dc council in the midst of its own ethics reform it comes after council members, marion barry and david catania engaged in a profanity laced argument during a retreat yesterday. a washington reporter said catania called barry a despicable human being along
9:04 am
with other explicatives after barry asked about the future of united medical center which catania takes credit for saving from bankruptcy. barry is calling on kwame brown to look into catania's behaviour he will join us live 9:30 a.m. this morning. prosecution is expected to rest today in george hughly's murder trial yesterday medical and forensic experts took the stand. paul wagner has been following the trial he joins us live from charlottesville with the latest good morning paul. good morning tony this jury sat and listened to evidence from 9:00 a.m. yesterday morning until 7:25 p.m. last night, highly unusual that a judge would force a jury to listen to testimony that long and some of it was highly technical medical evidence about what happened to yeardly love the day she died may 3rd,
9:05 am
2010 there were two mural pathologists took the stand and for hours, went through what they discovered when they examined her brain saying they found contusions to each side hemorrhaging to her brain stem they said it could only have come from blunt force trauma, there were also experts who took the stand on blood spatter analysis there was a dna expert, we also heard again from the medical examiner, who came back to the stand and finally gave his explanation of what he thinks killed yeardly love he said cardiac arrhythmia, brought on by blunt force trauma. this morning we expect testimony of friends from george hughly who saw him that night and early in the morning after he left yeardly love's apartment and we do expect the prosecution to rest tony. paul just one quick question, obviously there is all this testimony some of it technical a lot of it medical
