7:00 am
about this. this is friday, february 17th, 2012. good morning, everybody. i'm tony perkins. >> and i'm sal son seymour. tucker barnes joining us. i had a little preview, tucker. i need more details. >> are you referring to the sunshine and temperatures in the 50s later today? good weather today. >> i'm talk about today. >> i'm talking about snow disaster on sunday. >> we're going to talk about that later. that's not going to be a disaster, allison, don't panic. we're going to talk about the advisory in effect here in the district and areas to the south and easement just be ready. the fog should burn off quickly. let's be concerned about today first, beautiful afternoon and bright sunshine. there is the sat rad. still leftover clouds from the rain yesterday. that will be getting out of here and we're going to talk about a much, much brighter day. winds out of the west.
7:01 am
41 in washington, 38 in baltimore. 43 in winchester. lot of sunshine, mild breezy, high temperature, 53 degrees. in a couple of minutes, we'll focus on that weekend forecast and the possibility of a winter storm. allison, we'll toss it back to you. >> thanks, tucker. now to a traffic alert. a deadly accident caused a a traffic alert. >> it's two left lanes getting by on the inner loop and right now they have temporarily stopped some traffic here at the scene. hardly anybody moving but, again, this delay is coming from 270, kind of like an afternoon rush hour drive is what you are expecting here on the inner loop as you head

towards silver spring. north of the highway, randolph road, good atative route for you. that could save you some time. the outer loop, the lanes are open, slow traffic coming around the curb much. aspen hill road at connecticut, accident moved it into a parking lot. accident activity squeezing the right lane. 395 is slow as is the h-o-v lane. 66 remain slows. expect delays from manassas heading towards the capital beltway. that's a check at the fox 5 ontime traffic. >> thank you, julie. new this morning a two-year- old girl is fighting for her life after being caught in a house fire. the fire broke out in the kitchen of the family's townhouse. it quickly spread. three adults and a nine-year-

old girl escaped but they were unable to get to the little girl. firefighters rescued her from a second floor window. she was taken to the hospital in critical condition. there have been even more street robberies and robbery attempts in downtown d.c the latest, a holdup that happened on 16th street and massachusetts avenue, northwest. then a gunman held up a store at l street just after midnight. these robberies come after a series of robberies in dupont circle and downtown. a casino on the potomac and our other big stories. sharon baker want to bring in high-end gambling. it will cost about a billion dollars to build and could bring a lot of economic activity. sherry li is live with more. >> tony and allison, if casinos are coming to prince george's
7:04 am
county, thinks where county executive rashon baker wants it. we are talking about a one billion dollars high-end las vegas style casino with what they envisioned as the black jack and roulette, live shows, hotel and dining as well. it is an about-face for the county executives. he calls national harbor the perfect location for such an upscale development over a place like rose croft, the race track which has also been mentioned as a location for slots. the billion dollars facility could create 5000 new jobs, boost tourism and provide revenue to the county of $29 million. now, the county executive says that the revenue would help schools and public safety. he would like to see a split on some of that revenue between nonprofit housing needs such as
7:05 am
foreclosure issues in the county as well as economic development. of course, thinks all part of a bill still pending in the general assembly. baker would like to see some amendments to that before it would pass but if there is casino style gaming, they want it to be here at national harbor. that's the latest here. >> thank you, sherry li. >> let's get more to the big casino proposal. prince george's county executive is here. if i could start by saying that our prayers go to the young girl and her family and we're going to do our best for her and her family. >> extraordinary work for the firefighters. let's go back to slots. when you were a delegate, you were opposed to slots.
7:06 am
what has made you change your mind? >> well, a lot has changed. when i was in the house, we didn't have the national harbor. we didn't have anything to attract people. but from across the -- it has changed my mind. it will bring in a the of revenues. we rest mate about $50 million could come no prince george's county. that will go help with our housing stabilization money, help with our nonprofit, help do some of the things that we want to see in prince george's county while providing expanding our tax base in the county. . >> can you clarify the numbers for me because i'm here 29 billion, i'm hearing 49 billion, close to 50, you say. are we talking about two different things? there two different pots of money that equal between 40 to $50 billion coming in. to build the casino, we want a
7:07 am
billion dollars facility there. when we say las vegas style, we say that because we are talking about bringing shows here that you normally can't get in this area or in prince george's county, having the shopping inside the hotels, having the type of restaurant. that right there makes it a destination point for people outside of maryland and, quite honestly, on the east coast. this right here is an economic development changer for prince george's county. it will change our area. >> what about concerns that, you know, prince george's county -- or people in prince george's county, the last thing they need is a place to gamble away their money. that's one of the reasons i went for the high-end casino and not the slot bars that i opposed in the past. that right there is when people come in on the last dime on the slot machine. this right here is more of an en tantamount where you see people with disposable income and not drawing from prince george's county. what we found in our study is that this is going to draw
7:08 am
people from virginia, d.c. and across the east coast. so it's not relying on people in the county. in fact, it helps us get the revenues that we deal with in the county. >> you have at rose croft, those guys want gambling there, more gambling there and there are plans for some gaming in anne arundel county. won't this kind of jeopardize those developments or perhaps negatively impact those is this. >> i said i would be in favor of one facility in prince george's county. the place it should be, i things is national harbor. nothing against rose croft but the amount of money that we would have to put in at rose croft for infra struck tiewrks the fact that it's around a residential area, for me, the best site is national harbor. it's away from the national harbor, up on the hill. the amount of money that we would have to spend is minimal.
7:09 am
>> there is a map there, a plateau area where you are proposing this. you are talking about revenue. what about jobs? >> we estimate it's going to create about 5000 permanent jobs, union jobs paying between 5000 to $55,000 a year. it will pay for about 1500 jobs in construction. we weighed all the options. this is the best option for us to go through. as we are looking for revenues over the next many years, this is a way of having continuous revenue come into the county. >> i know voters will have to get their say in all of this as well. we'll be hearing a lot more from this, thank you for coming in, county executive roeshern baker. the uva murder trial

resumes today following a break after one of the defense attorneys got sick. the trial has been extended to next wednesday with an added session tomorrow. fox 5's paul wagner is live in charlotte ville following the trial until the very end. we have a preview of the today's testimony and you can check out his blog updates at myfoxdc.com with a link and the hot topic bar. spotsylvania county police are looking for a pair of gunmen. this happened yesterday morning. surveillance video shows the first gunman surprised the store manager from behind and the second gunman later appeared. the manager was tied up but not seriously hurt otherwise. the gunman got away with an undisclosed amount of cash. >> to the campaign trail now. president barack obama raising millions as republican

7:18 am
the weather guy, by the way. i know the segment. [ laughter ]. >> old fashioned showdown. >> i'll have a word with you later. >> okay. >> there is some cold air out there. let's focus on, first, today, as mentioned, sunshine after we get rid of this dense fog this morning and it will be breezy. take a jacket with you as you take out the door because even with temperatures in the 50s, it's going to feel cooler with the winds out of the northwest. see the showers breaking out. air of pressure will break down there. we have not done that at all this year. it's going to push into the deep south and off the carolina coast late sunday and sunday night and bring us a period of what looks to be-- here is the thinking. looks like we're going to start
7:19 am
with a period of rain, quickly transition to snow and that show will be with us sunday and sunday night the storm system will be moving relatively quickly but it is looking more and more likely like the storm will be able to drag in enough cold air, will manufacture cold air. what it does basically is it reaching up into canada and grab that cold air. looks like enough cold air will be in place so we will see a period of snow here. there will be moisture available so accumulating snow still not out of the question. still too long to call how much we're going to see. suffice it to say that we will have picked up more than two inches. it's not going to be snow ma -maggedon. >> and it's on sunday, the day
7:20 am
before a holiday. and that will have a minimal impact. that is good news. >> uh-huh. >> thank you, tucker. >> yes. let's go to julie. we had major problem. >> fatal crash that remains under investigation on the inner loop of the beltway as you work your way between connecticut avenue and georgia avenue. two left lanes are getting by. delays are stacking up as you work your way into 270 heading eastbound. northbound 395, crash as we mentioned earlier. big delay coming out. we had problems now as we travel northbound 28 after willard. overturned vehicle. nobody is going to be able to get by. 66, a lot of red right now. definitely slow going coming out of manassas headed towards fair oaks and into sorry jenna. fairfax county parkway down to 22 miles per hour. that's a look at the check 5 ontime traffic. >> thanks, julie.
7:21 am
in just over 24 hours, whitney houston will be laid to rest. we are learning more details about how she will be remembered. >> we are also hearing from her ex-husband, bobby brown who performed in our area last night. >> wisdom martin is back now with that and more on tomorrow. >> bobby brown, his group, new edition, they made a stop here in our area show place in upper marlboro. lots of fans were not sure if bobby brown would show up and much less perform. and he did. he even opened up with a tribute to whitney houston: >> i like to say thank you for your prayers. i like to say thank you. >> brown appeared to be in good spirits. he told fans that life is life and sometimes you have to move on. many who came to the concert
7:22 am
came with heavy hearts but was glad to see brown with new edition performing in a difficult time. brown will make his way to newark, new jersey, for his ex- wife's funeral. there were reports yesterday that houston's family did not want bobby brown there but houston's publicist confirmed that he did get a formal invitation from the family yesterday. people reports that he will attend and then head back on the road a few hours later for another performance with new edition. as for the singer's funeral, her final good-bye, it promises to be a very musical service, aretha franklin and stevie wonder are slated to sing. there will be stars like clive davies and her co-start on the body card, kevin costner. fans without invitation will be kept far away.
7:23 am
they plan to shut down all streets six blocks around the church. saturday, of course, marks one week since houston was found dead in the bathtub of her suite in beverly hills the night before the grammies. tony and allison, back to you. >> a lot more information than we had. >> yes, keeps coming out. >> thank you. time right now is 7:23. 39 degrees. still ahead, a recall that could potentially be dangerous to children and twitter is competing to become a major player in the world of online marketing. why you will see more advertising.

welcome back. it's 7:30. a new exhibit at mount vernon shows how the first president had his meals. the exhibit is called hospitality, cooking with martha washington. the exhibit shows how george washington ate, with details and the role that slaves played in colonial. that living history and reenactment is great. >> love it. >> want to make thinking that they used to eat, like 240 years ago or whatever it was. >> right. right. just for history sake to kind of taste it. i think i would. >> not on a regular basis. i don't need ho cakes. programs i would make up a batch for everyone. >> we have our own version today. >> we do? >> don't you think so?
7:32 am
>> i don't know what you are talking about. >> it turned into something. >> let's talk about weather. >> i'm offering some cakes and you don't remember. >> i want to remind you of february of 1983. you guys remember? >> i do. >> we had a very, very mild february and out of nowhere, mother nature. >> but you said that we don't have the cold air really. >> we didn't have it in '83 either. see what happened? i'm not saying it's not going to happen but everything is possible in the month of february. we are not looking at blizzard or potential for blizzard. but i think there is a potential for accumulating snow. >> kids will love that. >> and most of them have the day off on monday. >> yes. >> so wax off the sleds. >> we still have dense fog across the area, dense fog
7:33 am
advisory continues until 8:00 this morning. once we mix that out in the atmosphere, sunshine should build in, should be a beautiful day four. high temperatures, as we mentioned, in the oohs, and a bit of a breeze here out of the north and west. here is the set of radar. we're going to get the cloud out of here. should be a nice afternoon as the pressure builds in. clouds will start to move in from the south and west during the course of our saturday. and the makings of our next storm system now taking shape down there in eastern texas and northern golf. looks like it's going to go across the south and then off the mid-atlantic coast. by late cup day and sunday night. should be a quick mover. anybody that watches washington weather, any time there is a deep edge, we have the risk of deepening winter weather here. there is the possibility that that will be the case. let me give you some headlines and changing in thinking here. we are getting more and more
7:34 am
confident that this storm will impact the washington area during the day on sunday and sunday night yesterday, we thought the storm would arrive late saturday early sunday. now, i don't think it gets in here until sunday. you have plans saturday nights go for it. should be just fine as we won't get any rain and/or snow around here until early sunday. looks like it will start as rain and then change to snow. we'll start to rain as then change over to snow. accumulations all depend on that track. as mentioned, it looks more and more likely that we will get some accumulation across the washington area here by sunday night and we only had two inches of snow here so it won't take a whole lot to make it the biggest storm of the year in washington. sunshine, mild, breezy. clear and chilly, 34 degrees and the weekend forecast, mentioning the storminess, we'll get out of here on president's day. temperature on monday, 39
7:35 am
degrees. that's weather. let's do traffic and julie wright has the latest. >> on the inner loop of the beltway, still dealing with accident activity from early in the morning. unfortunately a fatal crash remains under investigation, east of connecticut avenue but georgia avenue, two left lines are now getting by. on the other side of the town, thinks where we have some problems around north bound 28. northbound side of 28 remains closed at this time. eastbound 66 coming out of manassas, heading towards your exit in fair oaks. ever green mills road, reports back that could be closed there because of the crash. that's a look at the fox 5 ontime traffic. >> thank you, julie. according to the 2010 census, the latino community is now the second largest group, over 50 million strong which
7:36 am
means that the latino community will have a major impact. we'll have more on the impact of this mega goating block. 50 million, now the nation's largest minority group. how important is it to go out the latino vote? >> very important. they are the fastest block, they have the potential to swing a lot of states, including swing states, florida, colorado. some of the ones that are on the fence right now. candidates know this -- sorry. go ahead, just doing a little microphone adjustment here >> the candidates know this. there is a reason you are seeing a lot of spanish language tv ads, a lot of facebook ads in spanish, a lot of uni vision interviews that they are doing in florida and things like that. a couple of numbers i will give you. 1988, latino voters made up
7:37 am
32.6%. in 2008, it was 7.4%. more than doubled in 20 years. this year it is supposed to be even bigger, more than 12 million latino voters are supposed to come out, more than 12% hop. they are energized, energizable and that's why everybody is going after that. >> we are seeing president barack obama with the video. this block aim out in favor of president obama in 2008. since then, how has his record been on issues of importance to the community? >> it's tricky for m because he campaigned so strongly, was such a pro reform candidate in 2008, comprehensive immigration report, dream act. none of them have been done. that's not quite his fault, he still has to pass congress but latinos are very weary of that. weary of his deportation record. he has been much stronger on
7:38 am
enforcement than george bush. 400,000 deportations alone last year. they are looking at the numbers and looking at nothing is passing in congress. they are saying, is this the guy that we thought we elected? he is in a tough position and what you see is now him pivoting back towards the left on this issue, just in the last couple of months. you have seen he has sued arizona over their tough immigration law. he has changed the deportation policy now so that they focus only on hardened criminals and those sorts of things, won't go after students and house wise and people less threatening to you and me. more recently, they have also named l.a. mayor antonio villarogosa. >> and mitt romney and rick santorum have called the dream
7:39 am
act amnesty. >> a typical floridian looks at this and what message is here and what message needs to be conveyed for them to get votes? >> like so many issues, they attack very far from the right. you mentioned amnesty. they are also against the dream act. romney said he would veto the dream act as president. that's a tough way to speak to latino voters who support that bill by a rate of 90%. they are not quite as far to the right as herman cain who wanted to electrify the border fence but wanted to secure the border fence even more. so they're going to have a tough time in the general, whoever wins it is going to have a tough time coming back to the left. you see that it has worked in the primary. they beat up on rick perry, governor of texas who has allowed illegal immigrants to get in-state tuition rate and that was in one of the first debates. they hammered him on that. he never quite recovered.
7:40 am
the message at least in the primaries, this is an issue that's a winner. they went after it but that's going to be tough to tack back to the center and attract the latino voters. >> earlier, we saw mitt romney pushing the fact that his father spent time in mexico. how does that come across, something like that, you know, governor ofs thats that, raised in michigan but my dad was in mexico as a missionary. how does that kind of thing play? >> depend on the voters. some might say, he does have a connection with us. he is not totally foreign. he has been there. he has a connection and others might say, it's like, you know, somebody saying, my best friend is a mexican. does not mean a thing. it's voter specific as well. la tip yos are also socially conservative. they tend to be catholic and so that bears well for republicans. but, again, on the more legislative is side legislative
7:41 am
side, they're going to have a harder time. >> thank you both very much. it is now 7:40 coming up. coming up on 7:41 this morning, mexico's president is sending a strong president to the other side of the border via a billboard. we're going to take a closer look next. and the colbert report is currently on repeat. we're going to explain why after the break. land o'lakes spreadable butter with canola oil

the president of mexico has a message for the united states. no more weapons. president felipe calderon put up a huge three-ton billboard near the u.s. border. it says, no more weapons. he says that the u.s. must stop the flow of weapons into mexico. the message was put up with weapons seized. the colbert show has been suspended as of wednesday.
7:45 am
several reports suggest it is due to a family emergency possibly involving his 91-year- old grandmother who is reportedly seriously ill. the show is expected to resume production soon, possibly as early as next week. on a lighter note, your candy bar -- although this might be serious to some people. candy bars are going to get smaller. mars will stop making the giant size of candy bars. the larimer bars are expected to disappear by the end of the year. good for me. >> now that i see what they are doing, that's okay. >> who needed the king size? who really needed it? >> i bet the price will be larger, smaller. >> regular size. like a pock of m & m, 200 calories >> they are delicious, by the way. >> anyway, what's up? >> forecast is going to be
7:46 am
absolutely beautiful. sunshine will break out after the fog. you will have no sense that we might have any issues this weekend if you get outside today if you get outside. 42 fredericksburg and 41 in haggerstown. no issues today, a little morning fog will burn off. winds out of the north and west. bring how the jacket. i put it into motion here and now we are into saturday about 6:00. clouds will be increasing and then our focus will turn to that area of low pressure down in the northern gulf of mexico and that will be lifting towards the washington area. notice i forwarded that at 7:00 a.m. look at what's creeping into the washington area by early on sunday. looks like we will see a period of rain transitioning to snow. it is a quick mover so it will be out of here by late sunday night but thinks going to be the bigger storm of the year. not saying much but potential
7:47 am
out there for enough coastal air, we could have some accumulation. >> how much at reagan national? >> don't say it. >> just do it. >> no, no, no. >> you do >> it's we don't have a lot of time but let me tell you something. here is what always happens because i have come through this. how much people say? i don't want to say how much. >> allison, i have a good sense of how much because too much can happen. >> there is a milky way on the line. i say less than two inches. >> i say at least two inches. >> better be king size. >> julie it here. >> making the trip along 95. this is where the trashing was shut down. now they are making some

7:53 am
last year, 14,000 people came to this one-day event. that is a lot of people and the goal is to get kids all jazzed about engineering and that is really cool. the woman behind it all, joe crane selig joins us --joanne selig joins us now. thinks fun to make kids involved. >> it's a fun event. kids of all ages come. we want them to see engineering, come out and discover the mist behind it. we have over 28 hands on activity from lego robot to a tsunami wave tank. >> a tsunami wave tank. that's been getting a lot of buzz. i posted it on facebook and people are thinking that's fun. >> it's learning about structural activities. kids make little lego brace.

kids put it in a tank and learn about what keeps buildings standing. what is the range specifically? you still need maybe four or five years old, right? >> the majority of activity are ages 5 to 13 but for the little ones, curious george and cat in the hat will be here. >> there are things for the little ones? >> right. >> reporter: talk about some otherring a it the that they can get their hands on. >> sure. we have an activity called the science of popcorn which teaches about aero dynamic. we have a wind tunnel. you can make slime and a giant dance pad which we will be doing in the eight hour. thank you very much, joanne. >> thank you, annie. >> my second guest asked me if i had a pack of gum. i said why? he says there is a neat experiment. and chris joins me now from

triple usa. earlier, i gave you a gum pack. what's that about? >> this helps children learn what conduct electricity and which don't. this paper, you don't think, would conduct electricity but if we put it here to get the gap, it has aluminium in it. now we take this dvd and you can see it's got that metallic look to it and we'll see if it does work. the buzzer does not work because it is -- although it's metallic, it's really plastic. >> kids think that's very need. >> especially little children. >> here, we have a lighting display and this is important because these traditional incan
