street as we work our way up. no problems to report heading across the 14th street bridge. that's a check of the traffic. thank you, julie. the uva murder trial. in hours, the jurors will deliberate the fate of george huguely who's accused of killing yeardley love in may of 2010. he acknowledged kicking a hole in her door, invite cysts he only wanted to talk. the medical examiners gave several possible causes of her death. he faces up to life in prison. also, due in court, the man accused of trying to bomb the u.s. capitol. he was arrested friday on his way to the capitol. after undercover agents gave him a pack with fake explosives.

developing in afghanistan, more protests about the americans burning the muslim holy book. anti-american rallies are underway at the air base and at camp phoenix at the kabul province. we're getting word that two western journalists were killed in syria this morning. one is an american, she worked for a british newspaper and the other is a french photographer. both died when rockets hit the neighborhood they were in overnight. a hundred people were reported killed there just yesterday. it was some of the worst shellings since the uprising started last year. the u.s. is changing the position.

hillary clinton is going to discuss helping the rebels in a meeting with the group friends of syria. that's on friday. new this morning. an historic day on the national mall. ground breaking is starting today on the new african american museum of history and culture. >> reporter: good morning, you know, things will get started here in a few hours. you can feel the excitement in the air. people have stopped by to talk to us about it. you can see the tent where president obama and laura bush will be later on today. it's been more than ten years since the museum was approved by an act of congress. it will take $500 million to get this going. today, that's where we'll start and we'll kick off the first phase of construction. some of the artifacts are on

display at the american history museum. many of them are collected from donations from the public. the items will tell stories that haven't been told before of african american businesses and military honors. also, matt turner and harriet tubman will be honored. the museum will be showing a presence all its own. >> hopefully, the building will have its own presence and feel like it fits in. the lay outis within a stones throw of the site. >> reporter: the museum is scheduled to open in 2015. the website is up and going. they're having public meetings and out reach. they're also looking, what i like about this is they're going around the country talking about artifacts and why

those may be valuable. they still need 10,000 artifacts. this is going to be the 19th museum in the smithsonian institution. it's a good chance this is going to be the last museum on the national mall. we'll tell you later about the ceremony. >> something for local residents to think about. a lot of people may have artifacts. thank you, we appreciate it. checking this morning's other top stories. police in anne arundel county need help tracking down a man accused of sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl. the girl told the police that a man grabbed her when she was walking home from school and pulled her into the woods and sexually assaulted her. a fire started at this wal- mart started by 13-year-old

kids as a diversion to shoplift. they went next door to a target store. no one was injured, but the shoppers and employees had to evacuate for two hours. charges will be filed this morning. police are on the lookout in the wake of a new rash of robberies. they were six more between 6:00 and 8:00 last night and three more overnight in south west and northwest. one of the latest, a woman walking over a bridge in georgetown was forced to give over jewelry and her bag to a man who came up behind her and put something to her back. new details are out about the driver who died in a car crash in a kfc. the 29-year-old woman behind the wheel was going close to 100 miles per hour moments before the crash.

the police believe she hit the curve and cart wheeled before smashing into a red suv parked in front of the restaurant. the family's mourning the loss. smith's mother was stunned to hear the news. >> she was devastated. she couldn't believe it. i said, i'm positive this happened. it's a state of unbelief. >> she was kind hearted and sweet. whatever you asked, she would give it to you, no matter what. >> she was ticketed last month, she received five citations including citations for driving 91 miles per hour in a 55 miles per hour zone, driving on a suspended license and not having a current registration or tags. a new poll released overnight shows a surging

santorum is running even with mitt romney. none of the republicans in the race is fairing well against president obama. the poll shows the president holding an 8 to 10% lead. it also shows his support among independants is growing. these new numbers come eight months before the election. on the same day, they'll prepare for the final debate. we have more on tonight's big showdown. >> the debate is in arizona, and in michigan next week. overall, there are signs that the race is tightening. >> thank you, very much! god bless america! >> reporter: it's a santorum surge coming to an end. he's neck and neck with mitt romney heading into tonight's debate.

dangerous president in modern american history. joining us now are peter fanin and jimenasensi. we'll talk about the debate tonight. for a while, we felt like there was a debate every three nights. this one feels like it's getting important, down to the wire. four guys are left. what are the candidates needing to do tonight? >> well, it's team a and team b. romney versus santorum and paul and newt gingrich. everyone will be up on romney. ron paul's taking shots on santorum. it will be a good skrum. newt gingrich needs to rehabilitate himself. with him having no money, he

has to do well to convince the contributors. this may be the last debate we have for a while, this is probably his last gasp. also, ultimately, this is going to be a two person race. it will seal the deal. >> you were talking about last gasp for ron paul? >> well, yes, and for newt gingrich. >> we're not even sure there's going to be another debate. this is the 20th. frankly, if i'm mitt romney or santorum, there's no reason to have another one. you don't want a guy like newt gingrich to pop back up again. >> you were pointing out the importance of debates to the voters in the other states. they came out with a survey. 2/3 of voters in south carolina and florida thought they were very important.

right now, arizona is key. arizona said, okay, that's romney, it's done. it's heavily mormon. now, it's closed and this debate could play into who wins in arizona. the big surprise could be that santorum wins arizona and romney wins michigan. well, jim is right about this. the strange thing to me is the way that ron paul is going after santorum. not romney, he's really ripping in this with his ads in michigan. all i can think about is the collusion going on between the two goes. heaven knows why. >> there's a collusion and a story about it. they're friendly. they were buddies. >> in michigan, most of the polls have santorum either even with or highier now than romney. if romney can't pull out

michigan is that a fatal wound to his campaign? >> no, fatal wound, no. he's been trailing for a long time now. the converse is, if romney does win in michigan, given in some poll, he was 20 points behind. i think that's a big deal. one thing we've said, romney has the money. if you have the money, you need to spend it to win the delegates. that's how he closes the gap. he's doubled the spending of santorum in michelle obama and they're all negative ads. he's going to santorum what he did to newt gingrich in florida. this is the demolition derby now. we're sitting back here like the cat that ate the canary. this is unbelievable. the thing is, romney has enough money to buy the battered cars

and keeps putting them on the demolition, but he's demolished himself. >> there was a joke on "saturday night live" about the president's numbers being up and the four republicans campaigning. the president said, keep talking, it's helping him. i want to show this ad that's getting a lot of attention. it's called rombo. >> this time, romney's firing his mud at santorum. romney and his superpack spent $20 million attacking federal republicans. romney's trying to hide from -- >> it's a pretty funny ad and it's well done. is this effective? >> well, first of all, this is the ad you put up when you know

he'll be blasted as he knows he has been by romney. i would get this thing off of the air. i would start to go after romney. you made your point you're going to get slammed, but don't keep running the add. you don't have to see it more than once or twice to get it. >> i don't think it's on any more. it was a great preemptive ad. they knew it would happen and it's clever and creative. that's why people watch television. there and he looks just like romney. are we out of time? >> oh, okay, i have 30 seconds. obama, numbers are up, is this, i guess it's due to the economic numbers rebounding and the jobs numbers that are better in some sense.

working in public relations is not for the faint of heart. i love what i do, i enjoy the work, but it's a very hectic pace. strayer university met my needs in terms of my family, my work-life balance. the fact that leading companies are hiring strayer graduates is impressive, but it's not surprising. these companies want us so badly. i'm felicia blow, and i earned my mba from strayer university.
