in the comfortable range, reagan national, 47 degrees. so, temperatures, noticeably warmer than 24 house ago. we should see the numbers jumping into the lower 70s by this afternoon. there's a look at the sat rad. we showed a few showers north and east. the light rain shower to the west, that's a weak cold front as it's falling apart and approaching. behind it, the air will be warmer. later on today, we're expecting these unseasonably warm temperatures. highs in washington, 68 degrees. fredericksburg, 71 degrees. it will be cooler up towards pennsylvania. hagerstown, your high is 63 degrees. we'll take a sneak peak at the weekend in -- a sneak peek at the weekend in a few minutes. making the trip around the capital beltway, the lanes are open.

traffic is slow going traveling in virginia heading north near the beltway. now, moving over to the shoulder. accident number two occurred near seminary road. traffic will slow as you travel towards north east washington the commute southbound, south of 50 heading towards pennsylvania avenue, about a nine minute drive. all of the lanes are open. that's a check of the fox5 on time traffic. all right, thank you. the big story, a guilty verdict in the george huguely murder trial. the jury is recommending 26 years for him. >> he could have gotten life behind bars. we're in the news room with more details on the verdict. >> well, allison, in returning a verdict, the jury found that yeardley love's death was

intentional, but not planned or premeditated. the judge could have agreed or lower the sentence. >> reporter: the jurors found george huguely guilty of second degree murder. >> we appreciate greatly, the work of the jurors in the case. >> reporter: the seven men and five women had to decide if george huguely beat yeardley love in a jealous out burst or if she died accidentally. she was found bloody and beaten in her apartment in may of 2010. >> there are no winners in the case. >> those in the courtroom saw his remorse. >> reporter: the jurors rejected the possible life sentence for huguely. they began deliberating the sentence after the second degree murder verdict recommending 25 years in prison. he was found guilty of grand

larceny. the jury recommended one year in prison for that. >> we're disappointed for this verdict. we look forward to some corrections in what happened here tonight. >> our hearts go out to the love family. >> reporter: huguely showed no emotions. all three rows reserved for the love family were full. >> and the family of yeardley love said, thyme hasn't made us miss her any less. it's devastating to wake up and realize she's no longer here. we'll keep her spirit alive by performing works of kindness in her name. we would like to thank the prosecutor for his tireless efforts on our behalf. this case had a lasting impact in virginia. last year, the law was passed

for people to easily obtain a protective restraining order. we've been following the trial since the beginning. paul is going to join us next hour for more hour on the case. we'll also get more legal analysis. the district police are investigating a double shooting in south east. this happened around 1:20 this morning in the 600 block of forestry street. a man was shot in the abdomen and one in the back. both are expected to survive. no word on a suspect or a motive. also, this morning, the police in montgomery county are searching for two missing people. first, this man, 21-year-old daryl brown. he was last seen at his house yesterday evening. it's possible he may not be wearing shoes.

authorities are concerned because he levels at -- he functions at the levels of a 10- year-old. also, a search is on for this 19-year-old. she doesn't speak, she suffers from several medical conditions and she walks with a limp. a series of attacks spread across 12 cities in iraq. the death toll is up to 50 people. most of the attacks targeted the police and security forces in what appears to be another strike out by al-qaeda bent on stabilizing iraq. the bombings and shootings were in baghdad at the height of rush hour. and some breaking news from afghanistan, afghan officials say that two u.s. soldiers have been killed after being shot by an afghan soldier.

the man was angry over the burning of korans. meanwhile, earlier today, the afghan police fired shots into the air to break up protests. several demonstrators have been killed by the police throughout this process. the members are out raged by the military mistakenly burning copies of the koran. a change of heart for been -- bob mcdonald. he rejected a bill that required women to have ultrasounds before having an abortion. he required only the external

imaging. the governor changed his mind after public uproar and protest. >> i just think we have too much government in our lives and the government should allow us to make our decisions privately and not force mandate. >> virginia's house delegates amended the bill and it passed. it will now go to the senate. a final vote for same sex marriage will be voted on tomorrow in maryland. opponents are pushing for the constitutionality on the amendments heading for a house version that narrowly passed last week. in last night's debate, the republican candidates attacked each other. it was the last debate before next week's primaries. we're live with more on the debates. >> well, it was not only the

30% are describing the country as in good condition. 18% say it's getting worse. one issue that may hurt the president is rising gas prices. he's going to florida to promote a new energy strategy. the white house says it will reduce the dependence on foreign oil. the government can do little to stop the rising gas prices. it's 48 degrees on thursday morning. still ahead, a key day in court for the army private accused of leaking documents. and protecting your privacy in cyber space. a new call for a crack down on how your every move online is being tracked. plus, a heads up if you drive in virginia, folks. v dot is looking to ease your commute in the long run, right now, you'll have to suffer through lane closures.

bradley manning's arraignment is set at fort meade in maryland. he also will say whether he wants to be tried by a judge or a jury. a call for stronger privacy rules when it comes to tracking what you do online. the obama administration will out line the consumer privacy

bill of rights. the idea is for technology companies to jointly craft new protections. google is supporting a do not track button. it stops using data about your web browsing habits. tornado season doesn't officially start until march, but storm chasers are watching the south east today. a nasty storm could spin off a batch of tornadoes. due to the warm winter, we could be in for a tough tornado season. last year's was tough. >> yeah, it was a rough one. yeah, right. there were several deadly tornadoes, unfortunately. >> tucker, do we have a good forecast? >> perfect. upper 60s and low 70s. we'll deliver. >> i love it! >> we'll keep it partly sunny. let's see the temperatures now.

we're off to a mild start. as i mentioned a few mornings ago, we were in the teens and 20s. now, we're in the 40s and the 50s. we'll be on the mild side this afternoon. 45 in leonard town this morning. let's see, we have a 50 in martinsburg. colder to the north and west. detroit, 32 and so is chicago. 's colder air to the north and -- there's colder air to the north and west. we'll be more seasonal coming up. this warm weather cannot last for ever. we have another nice afternoon and we'll get a combination of a warm front and a cold front overnight into the commute tomorrow that will bring us showers and windy conditions behind the front during the early morning hours tomorrow and the colder air i showed you to the north and west will work in. the temperatures around here this weekend, they won't be cold, but seasonal.

you've talked about it before. the ramp from the outer lupe of the beltway to 66 west near tysons? >> that's where the crew is with sky fox now. we'll pull up their shot. this is a sore spot for folks. we saw delays from 270 to 66 for the afternoon drive. the problem is, this ongoing construction has narrowed the ramps from two lanes down to one. if you drive this, you know what a headache it can be. every day, we see the traffic heading back towards 66. follow me back inside. what they'll do tonight. we'll try to pull up this map. they're going to show you the outer lupe of the beltway. they'll narrow the roadway. we don't have a map here. as you continue to work your way around the beltway to continue outbound on 66, they'll take away the lanes in order to add another lane. for you travel outbound on 66,

they'll have two lanes available for you. all of the roadwork begins tonight at 9:00. if you're a third shift person, make note of this. they'll shut down the roadway at 9:00. they'll take away the lanes as needed in order to give you another lane to go westbound on 66. so, hopefully, that will alleviate the congestion we've been sitting through. the inner lupe, the lanes will be open. as you continue leaving the area because of the hot lane zone. to go west on 66, tomorrow morning, all things go. you should find two lanes viable. back to you, guys. 7:20, it's 48 degrees and the d.c. police chief plans to meet with the community tonight over a rash of recent street crimes. more on when and where the meeting will happen, that's

today marks six months since the earthquake rocked the d.c. area. while the monument received funds for repairs, the cathedral needs $18 million to restore it. that's not including $7 million they've already raised.

that's to fix the cracks in the flying buttresses. the ongoing robberies in the area are leaving people concerned. there's a community safety meeting for tonight. the police chief will be there to address the problem. she'll give the people a chance to hear what's being done. a d.c. police officer intends to file a whistle blower lawsuit against the district. this comes after the controversy of a police escort for charlie sheen. burrton was demoted after telling the d.c. council that those types of escorts were common. >> i think that because i had the integrity enough to stand up and say, no, the chief is not being accurate in what she's saying to the public and

temperatures. we mentioned the showers moving through east of us. we'll get one or two more developing throughout the last two hours. they're really falling apart along this cold front. this is going to waiver across the area and allow the temperatures to come in from the west and the south. one more warm day and later on tonight, we'll get another that will punch through. that will bring in the cooler air into tomorrow. the end of the road for the warm temperatures is later on this afternoon. upper 60s and lower 70s. that's unseasonably warm. winds gusting to 25 miles per hour. later on tonight, showers moving back in with a cold front. 50 is the overnight low. winds south east at 5 to 10. windy tomorrow as the cold front moves through. the 65 will be early in the day. most of the days, we'll be falling into the 50s. right now, the weekend looks great.

time traffic. all right, julie, thank you very much. the republican candidates faced off last night in arizona. they all traded verbal punches about health care and the federal bail out. who's waking up with the momentum. joining us now is john stanton. >> it's a pleasure to be here. >> let's start with your overall impression. >> well, i think that probably the biggest thing was that romney didn't screw up this time. he was able to, you know, put santorum on the defensive. santorum did a poor job of handling some of the jabs he took from romney and others. he got into long winded arguments. that shall got him off of his game. i was surprised that newt

gingrich didn't do much of anything, really. he sort of sat back really inga debate. >> after watching last night, is it a two person race? >> you know, under normal circumstances, i would say, yes. this race has been so strange. i can see newt gingrich finding momentum someplace. during supertuesday, he could find states. if santorum does poorly in arizona and michigan, it could switch things up again. so, you know, it seems that way, it feels that way. this has been so unpredictable. >> one thing that's interesting about newt gingrich, he does say things that get the crowd going. you know, the crowd responded to him several times with

applause. is that enough to translate into votes? >> i don't think so. the sense i get is while he's good at giving a high school speech, most things aren't that realistic, like the 2-dollar a gallon gas. he gets people excited on the trail. right now, there's a sense amongst republican voters that they want to be excited and they want someone to punch president obama in the nose. if that translates in the end, that's not clear. >> for romney, you said he didn't mess things up. that was the best thing he did? can he take what he was able to do last night, i think you're right, putting santorum on the defensive, that's good for him. can he take him and shore up

his base in michigan and can this translate into success. >> i think so. the debates don't have much of an impact on the voters as we, the media would like to think. if he's able to take the momentum he got from the debate and translate that into a positive momentum, stories and coverage of him in the next 48 house, that could give him enough momentum to have enough effect in michigan. >> we've seen that president obama's numbers have been improving. at least somewhat with the good news we've gotten or relatively good news about the economy and the jobs. is it time for the candidates to shift the focus to president obama? do they really need to shift that message to the president?

>> it depends on who you talk to. there are a lot of leaders on the hill that feel they need to get this done with and get focused on barack obama. the longer he's hanging out and seeing the good economic numbers and job's numbers coming through, the harder it will be for whoever is nominated to climb back out and take him on. as you say, it's difficult for any of them. mitt romney tried to focus on barack obama. he had to take shots at his comet fors -- competitors. if not, he'll lose interest with the public. >> probably not a fair question, but was there a winner? >> i think that romney was the winner. he held his own and fought back when he needed to. he definitely put santorum in a bit of a box. he didn't have verbal missteps

a horrific crime from alabama, there a 9-year-old girl died after she was forced to run for three hours as punishment after lying about eating candy bars. she died of a seizure. she was dehydrated and her stepmother and grandmother are in jail. they both face murder charges. a shooting at an elementary school leaves an 8-year-old girl clinging to life. a gun brought to school by a 3rd grader discharged in the boy's back back. it hit the girl in the back. divers off the coast of italy found eight more bodies on one of the passenger decks. only four of the bodies were removed yesterday. the rest will be removed as

it creates steam and makes the biscuits light and flaky. we do baking camps and culinary camps. age ranges are broken up. they're on their own for two hours. they can do three day camps or five day camps. they can measure out ingredients and it's all hands on. >> how long is the camp and how many hours is it? >> from the older kids, 8:00 to 11:00. they're doing three our time -- hour time slots. >> reporter: you have everyone covered? >> yes, and the older kids even use knife skills and they get on the burners. we've had a few of the kids in camp with me before. lauren's been here. >> reporter: do you want to sign up for this camp?

of second degree murder asas opposed to first degree murder, what's the difference between those two so we understand whata was going on here? >> the virginia statute is interesting.re premeditation means he planned the murder.er. tease first degree murder under virginia law. second degree murder says anything but premeditation, andt there's not much of a deatfiniti there. so i think the jury believed both sides really, they believed that huguely committed the murder, or some bad act, but did more than contribute to herr death. he left her when she was alive, but clearly, he had a real serious hand in contributing toi the ngdeath, so i think the, boh sides did an effective job of convincing the jury of theirir side. the bottom line, they convictedd him of second degree murder.er. >> this trial, these kinds of trials can go on forever. this was a relatively shortshor period of deliberation, really,n they took about nine hours tos come to their verdict.

were you surprised by any of that? >> nothing surprises me in thee criminal justice system as far as speed goes in virginia. federal docket is called the rocket docket.et. and here, this judge seemed to keep really good control of thee trial. he gave the defense some latitude because they had onehe defense attorney that was y sick for a couple days, and so theyhy convened on saturday, so the two weeks was really, really quick. you look at some other murder trials we've had recently, theth lemon trial, that took over two weeks, almost a month.th. so i think the docket and thend trial itself moved very quickly for both sides.es >> my understanding now is that the jury has made theirt recommendation, 25 years for thr second degree murder, one for grand larceny, and the judge will rule on this in april. he doesn't have to abide by what they're saying, but he cannot increase the time? >> absolutely. a the vote by thbse jury, that's pretty unique, that the jury gets not only the vote..
