warm front moving through bringing some shower activity in northern maryland, and a cold front out to the west. you can see some left overshower. the cold front will move through, bringing us another round of showers and some thunderstorm activity and then behind the front, we're going to get very, very windy around here. so potential for strong thunderstorms and then gusty winds. the entire area is either under a high wind warning or wind advisory starting between noon and 3:00 today, and the issue here is winds gusting from 50 to 60 miles per hour. counties in close, loundoun county, frederick county could be dealing with gusty winds that could become the biggest weather stories this afternoon. 75 the forecast high for washing tonight record high is 78. we're going to get very close. >> more details in that

with senate president mike miller. >> am i on the wrong side of history? there is no doubt about it. maryland is now about to become the 8th state to legalize gay macy's gay marriage. governor o'malley says he plans to sign the measure into law within days. >> suddenly, our gay and lesbian constituents have the same rights and benefits and responsibilities and duties if they decide to get married as everybody else. >> reporter: now, in order to get the bill passed, wording was added so that the bill would not take effect until after all legal challenges are exhausted. now, opponents have already set up a website to begin collecting signatures to force a referendum. they need to gather more than 55,000 signatures in order to get it before the ballot.

sherrie li outside prince george's county mall. people are still behind you? >> reporter: there are. a lot of people have left but there are still 100 to 150 people here stitt waiting, even though they have been told that no one will be getting that nike galaxy foam shoe here. foot locker anownlsd it would not sell that shoe today at several stores across the country, because of concerns about safety. here is that shoe that we are talking about. it is a glow in the dark limited edition basketball shoe and it has been released in such limited quantities and not even the nike shoe online is selling it. the cost is $290 but it is listed for thousands of dollars for people trying to sell it online.

people are crowding around the doors trying to get their hand on this shoe. nike called this a limited edition release through the house of hoops. foot locker stores, only nine of them in the northeast, the only one in the washington region is here. there are other shoes being released by nike at other areas part of their all-star lineup. so other crowd are at other stores as well. here, the shoe everybody was waiting for was that foam posit. there were some riots that broke out in a mall in orlando. people were crowding around that mall trying to get in. thousands of people. there are reports that police had to fire tear gas to disperse the crowds and some warning shots were fired into the air. now that foot locker has canceled the launch of that shoe at several stores, some excitement over this shoe has now turned to anger.

>> it's kind of frustrating but what can you do? it is frustrating when you stand out here and wait and wait and wait and come out here at a time when it's supposed to be released and it's not coming up. >> did they say when they're going to release the shoe? they have no idea. they say just keep calling the store. >> reporter: we asked people around here why they are still waiting. >> a lot of people are waiting that they are hoping that now that the crowds have gotten smaller, maybe they'll go ahead and sell this shoe. but according to foot locker, the launch of that shoe here has been canceled. they are not telling us when that shoe is going to be released here. they are simply saying that we should continue to call the stores and they'll let us know at some time in the future. a lot of confusion out here.

into a homicide. police say that the young man shot and killed in nikolishin began park was in his late teens or early 20s. they have not yet identified him. another local university is dealing with the potential of norovie outbreak. howard university is counseling people to wash their hands. susan aldridge has led the university of maryland university college since 2006. but on wednesday, the state university system announced her leave without any explanation. umuc is the largest public university in the united states with more than 90,000 students. more than half of them are military service members, veterans and their families. many live overseas and take classes online time right now is 7:10 on a

you this, not much snow in the area but it was not costly anyway. the maryland state highway administration says it spent more than 30 million of its $36 million for the snow removal budget for this winter. crews had been called out 14 times for this winter but only had to apply salt or plows for a few times. crews applied 7 feet of snow in western maryland there is a showdown looming in the virginia state senate. lawmakers failed to pass a revised state budget and will likely revise the spending plan. democrats say they won't support the next budget unless they get more committee seats and a spot on the powerful finance committee. where you live may influence how well you sleep. university of pennsylvania researchers created sleep maps using data provided by the centers for disease control. they found southerners report

that he will do anything significant will be very slim. i spoke with a former cia analyst earlier in the week who said assad has been at this for a while now, since last year. he has been emboldened over time. anything short of force is not likely to move him at all. >> okay. so the other part of this is allowing humanitarian aid who has been hard hit in all of this violence. if there is no cease-fire, is there no aid? >> there could be a possibility of some opportunities for humanitarian organizations to get in but i don't know that it a he going to be reliant upon the government deciding to offer a cease-fire because, remember, they have done something similar to that in the past to allow in u.n. observers, but that didn't go well. it didn't last as long as it should have, wasn't very productive. they may do something to allow

for some humanitarian aid but then there is the question about what are they going to do while the humanitarian organizations are on the ground because humanitarian workers have been killed. journalists, as you know, have been killed. and, of course, people who live in syria have been killed. that's just a very grim situation right now for those folks. >> let's talk briefly about the journalists near and dear to our hearts. this is a group, i would imagine, that, before, had a bubble around them, they were there to report, not basically targets. but, now, we see this basically two journalists killed and it seems like they were targeted. tell us about that. >> there have been eight that have been killed since the crackdown began. marie colvin and remi ulchek

were targeted. according to the telegraph, colvin works for the sunday times. there were some conversations intercepted between syrian forces that indicated that they knew where they were, that they were going to target them and blame it on cross fire. i spoke to rob mahoney, deputy director of safety of journalists. he was upset about this not just because journalists were killed but because of the impact on people depending upon journalists to get their stories out. the assad regime has gotten some mobile communication tracking equipment and supposedly tracked these two journalists, electronic communications as well as others. and they knew exactly where they were. >> we could talk only about syria in this interview but i

want to get your opinion on what's going on in aftz with the burning of the koran. the president apologized. >> it was another one of those unfortunate situations where bad judgment was used, it appears. that was the case. that has been acknowledged by all sides, the military, the president, the afghans, folks watching and observing. it was one of those situations where supposedly, there were some detainees in the parwan facility at bag ram who had religious material and had been writing messages on some of the material which is considered dangerous, obviously. they are messages that might have included plans to attack or break out, et cetera. this material was removed from the detention facility and exactly how it ended up being burned is being investigated. i spoke with the spokesman

a university spokeswoman has given no details about the request. according to san dawes can i's lawyer, he learned of the subpoena from a local newspaper. a sex tape of john edward and his mistress, riyel hunter, is headed to the trash. hunter and a former aide named andrew young came up to an agreement. the mandate orders that the tape be destroyed within 30 days. hunter was living with the youngs while living with edwards' baby. edwards still face as list of criminal charges over the

southeast tennis and learning center in the district is celebrating black history month by rolling out their 6th annual blacks in wax. annie yu is learning more about the show. this is really bringing history to life, right, annie? >> reporter: yes, and in a really entertaining way. we are talking about really remarkable students who worked really hard in the last several months, learning the lines. they auditioned. it's quite a process right now. joining me now is cory berra and reggie van lee executive director of the blacks in wax. good morning to both of you.

entire situation was handled. hundreds of people here have already left but there are some, as you can see, who still remain. they are still hoping that the store will help the galaxy foam posit shoe that they came here to get. the galaxy foam posit is sold as the house of shoes. the shoo is sold for $200 but goes on for more on the internet. hundreds of people stood outside the mall. police stood guard for crowd control. this is one of nine. it didn't help that nike announced that due to its limited quantity, the online

store would not sell it it that led to more crowds here. and the managers announced that the shoe will be not sold because of safety concerns. hundreds of people showed up at the pentagon city. nike is launching several other high demand shoes as part of its all-star lineup, shoes from lebron james and kobe bryant to name a few but it is the galaxy foam posit that is the shoe to get. there is that the knicks' germ mi lin will be sporting that shoe during the nba all-star weekend. we are told that no one again here will be getting that much sought after shoe today. one person told us that the manager from foot locker who came out to inform the crowd said, quote, you all can go home. we are not selling no shoes today.

that's the latest here. back to you. >> all right. >> sherrie, thank you. meanwhile, some other top stories we are following. the search continues for the suspects in a home invasion in bowie, maryland. two armed men broke into a house. they tied up two adults and stole money and several items. they also took off in the homeowner's gold 1999 jaguar with maryland plates. the victims were not badly hurt another home invasion, this one in a fairfax county neighborhood. the victim, an 82-year-old woman. it happened on rust real road in fairfax. witnesses say that a masked man smashed through a back bedroom window startling the woman who was in bed at the time. the suspect grabbed the woman's keys and stole her car. >> what are you doing there? she said, take anything you want. don't hurt me. the man grabbed her by the neck and says, give me the phone.

question. why did you feel it necessary to gather police brass and residents. >> this is not the first one i had. if you have a crime spike occur and there is a lot of anxiety in the community, it's really important, i think, and needed that police get out in front of people to explain what they are doing, tell them how they can help and tell them how to protect themselves. so i thought it was a very good meeting. i thought there was some hopeful news from the chief. she indicated that from robberies across the district in the 400s in october when it really began, we are down to something in the 200s. they are working. they don't have it solved for sure, and they don't have the culprits who have been in tenley town but also dangled a bit of, i don't know, hope, in that she says there are some things that will come straight away that will be good news.

>> okay. >> the nature of these crimes, we have been reporting that people have been snatching electronics. tell us about the broader nature about this spike in crime. >> one of the featured items for the thieves are cell phones and ipads and other electronic equipment. these are sort of quick hit and run kind of robberies. sometimes, people are armed with guns, they come up behind you. we even had some people at last night's meeting who were themselves victims. it is troubling to hear their stories. they come behind you, sometimes knock you to the ground and sometimes hit you in the head and quickly grab your wallet or whatever they can get and your cell phone and then run off. sometimes, they have ski masks so it's very difficult to be able to identify them but police say they do have some leads. they are working them really hard. i had a sense of assurance after the meeting, though there were some issues that came up

that need to be looked at. a number of residents said there were a number of areas where they walk where the lighting is so poor, some of these folks lurk in bushes. the deputy mayor will take a look at that and see about that. >> also, we are talking about the crimes in upper northwest. crime exists in all quadrants of our city. some people came looking for answers in different areas. you represent the area where you had the meeting. >> when people are out and b do not carry the cell phone and electronic equipment. and call 911 if they see something suspicious. the police emphasize this over and over again. chief lanier says, when she gets suspicious peoples call, especially in areas being hit, she gives that a priority.
