out west and he is here to tell us what we can expect. >> let's get right to it show you that thunderstorm activity, produced out to the west, right now we have a resport of yet another tornado on -- report of yet another tornado on the ground central kentucky. let's start with hd radar, again as we get into the afternoon evening hours, this cold front will approach washington, lots of lightning, pushing east 50 miles per hour as tony mentioned earlier during the overnight hours, 12 separate tornadoes on the ground. this has a history of producing tornadoes and will likely do so for several hours to come. >> let's switch gears, rain moved in an hour ago as we go to viper and you will be able to see the rain showers spreading across the area, there you go, moderate rain for the late morning early afternoon and then, things will quiet down and rain will start

investigation. new this morning a traffic alert in prince georges county to pass along there is a massive sinkhole on 450, annapolis road westbound lanes remain blocked route 1, baltimore avenue, near keith's cross here is a look at video from earlier this morning, there was a water main break at the same location two weeks ago that flooded the area check out the sinkhole it appears to be the result of that. one of dcs guardian angels being credited with helping catch two alleged criminals in northeast. he was off duty last night when he saw two suspects steal an ipad from someone near the road island avenue stop. during the chase he was able to contact police, officers have ken lullly caught up with the -- eventually caught up with the suspects. king loves being able to fight crime >> i like what i do i have been doing it for 16 years

base mortuary since they came to light in 2009. some 9/11 remain that is went to dover may have been improperly handled as well the report says the unidentifiable fragmented remains of 9/11 victims were cremated, put into biomedical waste containers, they were disposed of in a virginia landfill this is one practice that lead to the investigation into the mishandling of remains of fallen soldiers from iraq andafghanistan at dover airforce bases mortuary. not strongly exercised by the army the chain of command and command oversight was not properly conducted. technical oversight was almost nonexistent rules regulations, et cetera, were not properly

understood. >> the report did say operations at dover have greatly improved, still, some members of congress say they want to know why the family members of the 9/11 victims were not notified allison. >> do we know for sure which 9/11 remains are involved. you know there is a big question surrounding that, i looked at the report and it really -- there is a memo in there detailing a memo from 25, july 02 that directs disposal of group s remains described as from the attack on the pentagon, the executive summary makes a one word mention throwing shanksville in there as well but the associated press talked to the coroner from shanksville pennsylvania and he says all remains of victims from flight 93 remained in pennsylvania he has no idea how they could or if they did make their way to dover airforce base as you can see questions like these are leading to these calls for a complete accounting of exactly what happened with those 9/11

identical problems and several systems for doing routine jobs such as conducting background checks on new job applicants more on the report, ed o'keefe federal eye reporter with washington post >> i read your story it is mind boggling i think we said earlier there is an outrage factor money is tight taxes are being raised on all of this and the government is wasting money is there a ballpark figure how much they are wasting? >> the only figure they would put on it is potentially 10s of billions of dollars because they look at this and say gosh it looks like there is duplication here, overlap there if it were to be further studied or justified by these agencies, then perhaps the figures would be different they have been criticized in the past for trying to put a specific dollar on it, but that is a huge chunk of change especially now days. gao found this, now will these individual agencies have to do some investigations and

try to straighten this out? >> it started happening on two tracts the beautiful thing about this report, not only find the problems but says here is what you can do to fix them a lot of these things have to be taken care of by congress the rest by administration they noted they put out a similar report last march, 172 different suggestions they had those done by administration, most of them done, congress lagging behind. >> surprise. >> exactly things like you know, merging agencies together eliminating administrative overhead and rethinking the way some of these programs are run. >> can you give us some of the more agregious examples. >> one is -- one i think people around here can appreciate is the fact it cost as billion dollars to do background checks on people applying for federal jobs at least seven agencies are building their own data base even though in most cases it is supposed to be done by

opm argument there is look at this do you need to be doing it can most be done by opm another example agency called federal protective service, basically be in charge of security for most federal security across the country. turns out the agencies either own urolase them are oles doing security -- own or lease theme are also doing security assessment. many federally run research dollars or programs are scatter shot you list nih, va, vod, other groups all conducting separate research some times on the same types of things. >> this is an example of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing in this case it is the idea va, vod, nia all hand out money for medical research in some cases gao said it could be the va is handing money to research the

same thing the naa asked another group to look at again the idea there is do we need two different groups looking at the same exact thing could we save a few million dollars and perhaps one data base where they can look and say who is doing breast cancer research and if they are don't hand out any more money. >> is this one thing reports issued, there was a report last year 172 recommendations reports issued congress will look at it i assume. >> congress always says they will look at it whether they vote on something that remains to be seen, increase leg as thee reports come out, -- increasingly as these reports come out, now that there is a list being drawn up almost every year think closer we are getting closer to the point where something will be done even if it is just a liver, you can save 2 billion. ed o'keefe good to see you. >> all righty. coming up new warnings for people who take statin drugs

about a new study on sleeping tablets and their adverse effect on mortality researchers found people who took as little as 18 doses per year had an increased risk of dying early. joining us a neurologist and sleep expert from the sleep lab at washington adventist hospital and clinical sleep advisor national institute of health thanks for being with us. this raised eyebrows what is your reaction to this sleep study i guess. >> it is an important finding a real finding research which ares who did this -- researchers who did this have been working on these problems for a number of years and raises more questions than it answers however. >> interesting we will talk about that in a second first we want to know what are we talking about, over-the- counter, prescription sleeping aids? >> these researchers looked at medical records for a large group of people, 4% had been

prescribed sleeping pills they couldn't verify the people took the medicine but looked at people who were prescribed them 2.5 years later there was a higher chance of dying from all causes those who were prescribed sleeping pills, generics, valiums, and anti histamines a wide variety of medicine prescribed seemed to put people at risk for dying faster. >> there are more natural remedies that a lot of people use, like melatonin or things you can go to whole foods the health food store and buy were those studied as well >> they were not this is specifically limited to prescription medications and people tempted to stop those medicines go out and buy something over-the-counter, it is not simple.

the melatonin helped only a few people to fall asleep it is good for controlling our clock but not good for helping people sleep most of the over-the- counter medicines are anti histamines that is a class of medicine in this study that specifically also elevated the risk of death. >> these have been prescribed this is nothing wrong with being prescribed a sleep aid, why if -- were they always dangerous? why have we now started to study this and look at this. >> if you look back 10, 20 years medical research establishment was studying more obvious dangers high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease we have more information, expanding into the field of sleep it is a newer field we know there are some dangers to having insomnia, one study also in central pennsylvania showed people who had insomnia, had a four times higher risk of dying it is not clear it is the pills that do the whole problem some has to do with having insomnia, the lesson from that is doctors

need to take insomnia, more seriously people who have trouble sleeping need to take it more seriously. >> okay so the question would be then, if there are some people who are going to say i will take my chances with insomnia, what would you say to those viewers versus taking a sleeping pill that might reduce my life span. >> we all take our chances but people who are not sleeping well have a higher risk of having a car crash. people who learn self-hypnosis, relaxation, guiding your mind to certain relaxing patterns people need to be willing to put in the psychological effort and time to do those exercises there are good books on the market to help people do that good psychological professionals who can teach that to people who have insomnia. >> you said at the top of this interview it raised a lot of questions now that need to be looked at what are you talking

about specifically? >> i am going to meet with my patients one by one and discuss this study with them and say how bad is your anal some mia one patient told me one -- insomnia, one patient told me i am so sleepy after one night, it hardly pays to take my foot off the accelerator and put on the brake. what is your message for those watching who said i am going to put all these medications down not going to deal with this. >> before you make any big changes talk with your doctors absolute risks of death in this study were relatively low so it is more when they were prescribed medicines than not but absolute risks are still low there is time to talk with your doctor or other health care professionals make a plan look over the dangers of not treating this problem. the sleep specialist at the sleep lab washington adventist

$200 per vehicle they are suggesting offering car makers the option to expand car mirrors instead. ray la hood says he needs more time for research and data analysis. 105 miles per hour how fast a prince georges county council woman was driving on the belt way and walked away with only a warning. council woman karen tolls was pulled over and ticketed for making an unsafe lane change driving a county issued vehicle at the time law enforcement say she was travelling 105 miles an hour in a 55-mile per hour zone but all she got was a written warning for excessive speed. >> dcs chief of police expected to testify on a host of issues with the police department one is sure to be the district not prosecuting drunk drivers. prosecutors are not taking dwi cases to court right now officers have been been able to use breathalyzer tests for more than a year and records show
