work ray wilson it is very good to have you here. >> pleasure to be here. >> i must says the very nice to see you after so many years. >> absolutely. >> but i want to talk a little bit before we get to the pictures i want to talk about this award tonight we talked about it on air a little yesterday what does it mean to you to be recognized for your work. >> it means a great deal being that i am a native washingtonian and have been affiliated with the greater washington urban league, just i retired from the military in so many respects and not knowing that something this magnitude would transpire i started off in the veterans program my background was in the personnel office i was aiding those less fortunate than myself to get honourable discharge or something of that nature and they needed assistance for disability et cetera and urban league had a program, in the

early 80s relating to that, so and then photography came into my life >> it came to your life relatively late, and by that i only mean some people you know they are 20 years old and decide i am going to be a photographer and go out there and do it it came to you later in life. >> very much later my wife and my son, my only son they took all the photographs i had a young man by the name of girly when i went to use my gi bill he was the chief photographer there i used to go other to his lab and was totally fascinated as to how he conducted himself and he moved about, so it gravitated me to his stock room and his office because the fact that he was the man and i had just watched him and i got a hold of a camera down on u

street for $25 that was the beginning of my life. i want to show some of these photos we will indicate what we are seeing so you can talk about them but one of the interesting things to me you got access to so many people and things at the time, the four mayors of washington dc, all african american mayors walter washington marion barry, sharon dixon anthony armstrong do you recall the circumstances anthony williams did i say armstrong? >> flexibility. that the past and present were paying honor to him, and an opportunity presented because i was the only one back there in that room. >> that is the amazing thing you didn't necessarily have press credentials or anything like that but you managed to cover a lot of great things. >> well, unknown to folks tony, people don't realize i had a background in the military i was in the personnel office and i did in fact have a top secret clearance and i had been places others didn't realize because i didn't talk about it so when the time arrived and things of that nature came to be i was able to get what i needed very easily without going through a long drawn out conversation. >> we are talking [ laughter ] >> i got you. >> let's show some of these other photos, this is me with

the business and i wasn't aware this would be transpired not realizing the original york boone would be there. >> surely chisolm, coretta scott king you lost your sight several years ago after taking photographs for so many years how have you dealt with the loss of sight? >> it is my joy that i have a dynamic wife, and fantastic children, which are all graduates of the dc public school system thank god, and they are doing well but the wife has been the rock of gibraltar she has been the commanding officer, as we were saying the chief of naval operations she kept everything in order so i had to follow the basic guidelines losing my sight it has been therapy for

me to the degree that i remember it in my mind that hey, i lost my sight and not my mind this has played a very unique role and i love photography so a whole lot i turn the machine on in my head and i can reflect back on everything over the years don't ask me how it is just there. >> just there. >> you have had a remarkable life's work, congratulations on the honor tonight it is well deserved i know for a long time phoaround your house i am glad they are getting organized. you got to do a book. >> well, it is in the making the thing is i want it to be with young men young ladies, know that they can be successful any endeavor in which they encounter these photographs should give them -- i am willing to go to the school to talk about things so

forget it. and obviously you guys are both accomplished trained actors, kind of put in perspective for me the show of spamalot where does that fall in your resume? >> well, ironically enough a lot of the work i did here in dc was share syrian and strangely enough a lot -- shakespeare january and rangely enough a lot of that translates, the director told me, if king arthur ever realizes he is in a comedy the whole thing would fall apart so i end up preparing for the role the same as i did other shakespeare stuff. >> your time at the renaissance festival probably helped. >> yes. >> as silly as this show is and as much fun as we have every night it is a challenge and privilege to come out and try to get 2000 people to try to pee themselves basically. >> all right i think we can say that on morning television >> i think so.
